In benzene anion negative charge resides on sp2 hybrid orbital and it is perpendicular to p orbital and does not involve in resonance thats why it is aromatic.

Electrons are not donated by pi bonds because in that case, the structure will be antiaromatic and hence unstable. So we first change it to aromatic form by putting negative charges on 2 of the ligands, hence it becomes stable. And then we see the formal charge that will come to be -2

Excellent lecture but phenyl cation or phenyl anion is not correctly explained mam. Both are aromatic since charge is residing at sp2 hybrid orbital which is orthogonal to pure p orbitals resulting localisation of the charge.
