    Summary-
    Changes in the sperm-
    1. Capacitation- alteration in glycoprotein and seminal proteins that coat the spermatozoal head.
    Occurs in the uterus
    Increases motility
    2. Acrosomal reaction- The sperm has specific protein that bind to the zona pellucida receptors ,ZP3. Upon binding, acrosomal head opens releasing acrosin and proteases. This creates a hole in zona pellucida.
    3. Fast block to polysperny- As the sperm touches the cell membrane, Na+ influx occurs .
    4. Slow block to polyspermy- Smooth ER releases Ca2+ ions which activates lysosome to fuse with the cell membrane of occytes. Hydrolytic enzymes are secreted causing degradation of Zp3 proteins and hardeining of cell membrane.

This is the first time I am commenting here. Zach, more power to your elbow. And I read that there's no fast-block to polyspermy in mammals. To the contrary it is found in marine invertebrates like sea urchins to ensure that sperms from other species in the water do not fertilize the wrong egg. But hey, I trust you and hope you will respond. I will be over excited to get your response.

Great video! Quick question, is the sperm that binds to the ZP3 receptor the same one that binds onto the oocyte's cell membrane? Or is it another sperm that kind of takes advantage of the fact that the zona pellucida is now degraded and binds to the secondary oocyte?

I've read, and my lecturers also told this, that in humans practically the whole sperm cell enters the oocyte. Plasma membrane gets left behind but everything else goes in. I think paternal mitochondria get destroyed so only maternal ones are left, and the centrioles of the sperm cell are inherited by the zygote.
There are so many misconceptions and alternative explanations going on about what parts of the sperm cell actually enter the oocyte, and right now I'm too busy panic-studying for my exams to really look into this. Just thought I'd give y'all something to think about and maybe do your own research if you're interested. I'm gonna go with the explanation my professors gave, and hopefully pass my exams :'D
