Takes me back to my youth, when Tyne & Wear PTE began to phase out their magnificent Scania Metropolitan 111 fleet, in favour of a fleet of brand new 'C' reg Leyland Olympians, in late 1985. The Olympians were more refined but felt slow to ride on, againt the hugely torquey, 2 speed auto (not a typo - only 2 gears!!) Scania 111s! The Olympians ran alongside the ancient but indestructable Leyland Atlanteans, for a number of years, up to and well past deregulation in 1986, when the buses transferred to Busways Ltd. A few Olympians (no Atlanteans) even survived right up until the start of the Stagecoach era.
The TWPTE Olympians were very sluggish and dull compared to the roaring Atlanteans and lurching Scanias, maybe because they had Voith gearboxes and Gardner engines. The Cummins engined Northumbria coach-seated batch were a totally different beast.
I travelled on B736 GCN along with other buses in the Johnson's/Redfern fleet. This was a VR running day organised by someone from the IOW. They are not a Nottingham local company but are based in Mansfield, Notts.
Ex Northern General/Go North East with a Cummins L10 and 4 speed Voith and are excellent for cruising. I know the area well where they was driving around.
@@hillbilly5483 the Cummins L10 engine is turbocharged, the Gardner isn’t. L10 is a lovely whirry smooth sounding engine. This L10 is hooked up to a Voith which has its own whirring sounds in addition to the L10
I did some casual driving for an operator in rushden Northamptonshire called diamond coaches. They had olympians mainly volvos of ex stagecoach origins however they did get one leyland olympian I forget where she was from she was a sort of red / maroon colour with if memory serves white striping. We used her on a contract taking students from bedford University to a night club and back the University shuttle was definitely an eye-opener for myself and the olympian. Wonder if she's still around.
I’m from Northern Ireland my husband owns Allen’s tours he usually owned a few ex Lothian leyland Olympians my favourite to drive was A159 FPG sadly they had to get sold on then my second favourite A145 DPE had went to a graveyard sadly after it’s new company sent it off for scrap really miss them still can see them
Blue one was new to northern general transport in April 1985, i dare say on the expresslink service to Newcastle, ive probably been on that back in the day. Looks in good order
That's 3736 ran out of Winlaton depot, travelled on it most of my teenage years, always loved the toasty warmth of the back bench and the sound of that L10, not forgetting the slight diff whine at very high speeds, oops I mean at the speed limit haha
The olympian, last of the proper double deckers, like the Nationals for single deck. The olympians used round us were Gardner + semi-auto, our National 2s having TL11 +semi. Changing gears also became a dying art after these. Easier in traffic nowadays for the driver but much less fun, although I'm not sure I would like to go all the way back to crash boxes. Give me syncromesh or semi auto every time.
There's a lot on their fleet that were local to me new in East Kent.. I'm tempted to apply for job with them to get to drive some of the old motors (I have Cat D and CPC)
Northumbria had those with a Cummins L10 and ZF gearbox, they could easily top 70 mph, unfortunately to be used on private hire they had to be fitted with a speed limiter or seat belts, not required on stage carriage work, we went the speed limiter option, as seat belts were a pain and constantly vandalised.

For a fleet of vehicles of that age, they are immaculate. Big credit to Johnsons/Redferns for the effort that goes into the upkeep of their fleet
They ran Bristol VR's all the way til the late 2000's and most got sold on for preservation or abroad. Their maintenance is second to none.
I used to work at a low cost depot years ago, I'd always dig one of these out for service, excellent buses!

Me too. Windy fields 😉
If Im correct, Northern General's B-GCN batch were the first Olympians to feature Cummins L10 engines.
All of those and the C-LJR variety
thats Cummins L10 w/ Voith, rare combination in UK
Love the deep bass whirry roar of a LT10
These never had a turbo, naturally aspirated, but if they did have a turbo, my word🚎💨

I think the Express links were registered C-LJR higher in the 36-- fleet numbers this was older by a year but higher fleet numbers 3736

Engine sounds totally different from what i remember
those were the buses not those modern where everything is computerized
I never did understand why the staircase was around the other way to most buses, it always seemed counter intuitive.
There's a lot on their fleet that were local to me new in East Kent.. I'm tempted to apply for job with them to get to drive some of the old motors (I have Cat D and CPC)
Hurry up because they haven't got many Leyland Olympians left now as they're being replaced by second hand Scania Omnidekka's
Company I used to work for had an Olympian it was an E reg E153OMD to be precise but it had a 180 Gardner engine in her instead of a Cummings

Would there be any way you could get a test drive of the new Oxford tube panoramas?
Is it me or older buses better than modern ones
Bus looks in fabulous condition. Just the right amount of rattles😂
Are these 10,000cc or 9600cc?
10,000cc
1 to 12a of the west notts college buses withdrawn 30 june 2023
Local Nottingham company
Its got a different engine.
It's got the Cummins L10 240bhp that it's always had, I will never forget that sound, I grew up around those engines, my favourite of that era
