Anxiety Cells Found in the Brain - How They Did It

  • Researchers have found the origin of anxiety in the hippocampus of mice. This has far-reaching effects on how we look at and treat anxiety in humans. Neuroscientists at Columbia University Medical Center and University of California San Francisco collaborated on a study and discovered certain brain cells in the hippocampus of mice that fires when the mouse becomes anxious and triggers certain anxiety behaviors. In this video I discuss the details of their findings and discuss the implications this has for future anxiety treatment.

Interesting. Hippocampus is where memory comes from. The ancient Hawaiian practice of Ho'oponopono says that our disorders and illness comes from memories and negative "data" replaying over and over. And ho'oponopono is a way to clean out the data and allow the self to heal. Amazing how these truths were apparent way back then, in various spiritual practices around the workd and are now starting to have more scientific data to support them.

I have a semi related question but want to prevent writing a mini-novel. Long story short, i was very caught off guard when I became addicted to opiates. I’d been given them throughout my life and never had an issue. The one big difference was that my depression and anxiety were through the roof when the addiction started. No meds worked. No therapy. Nothing. Until I suffered a legitimate injury which led to me being put on opiates.
I’ve tried explaining this to other doctors and until recently would only be told that a link was just in my head. I couldn’t get doctors to understand that when the addiction developed it had nothing to do with a buzz or being high or intoxicated! It was the fact the depression and anxiety would stop. At first I thought I was losing my mind so I kept paying attention and it continued to happen. When I would be given opiates, it was like it paused by mental illness.
Another odd aspect is that I rarely if ever have normal sensations of being hungry or full. I just have varying levels of nausea. After a great deal of digging and learning I realized the sensation most people feel from their vagus nerve being triggered once you’ve had a meal or other general calming act... that sensation never happens spontaneously anymore.
I’ve been clean and sober since 2006 and I’ve been asking these questions since then. So far the people I ask have no clue what would cause this and the others think I’m crazy. Does this make sense to you?

Hi, Dr Tracy. I was wondering if you could do a video on slow processing disorder because it seems I am more likely to have this than ADD and it seems, based on a conversation I had with a neuropsychologist, that a lot of people are misdiagnosed. It is so confusing to be misdiagnosed!! I wish I could help them! Slow processing symptoms stress me out everyday, but I do not want stimulants if I have other solutions... Tbd. Judging by some other peoples' accounts of this, they think they are stupid or lazy, but they are not. It is very disheartening, I feel. I try to just stay fit and healthy, but I suffer so much still, I feel. If I could die the worst death ever in exchange for a guarantee of nobody else having this issue, I actually think I would. It seems silly, but it is so confusing and I have no support or role models really either. It probably is not uncommon to have both of these setbacks, and I just have to say, if anybody else has one or both of these struggles, my gosh so sorry it is confusing, and always keep trying to push through. I figure technical writing, self paced classes, etc or some kind of work where people can chew on the information without an audience is a solid move. It has been hard to understand what I have the capacity to do and if it is even ethical for me to try to have friends or a spouse. Dr Tracy, thank you for the videos and for reading this, if you do read it. Sorry I'm a drama queen about this, but it gets me really down sometimes.

    Hi Doctor,
    Great video!
My cousin has ADHD. (I have seen your videos about ADHD) I suspect he might be suffering from Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria (RSD). He has gone from bad to worse with his depression, suicidal thoughts, insane mood swings, every lil' thing triggers him.
He is going to a low budget clinic. His therapist is a social worker, because he cannot afford to see a psychiatrist. The social worker has never heard of RSD. I really do not understand how a social worker can help him. The American health care is complicated to understand. I live in Europe: universal health care.
    I have the following questions:
    1. Could you please make a video about about RSD and the treatment? Is RSD new?
    2. What is your opinion regarding my cousin going to a therapist who is not a psychiatrist but a social worker?
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
    Cheers,
    Jennifer

Jennifer, he MUST exercise a lot.

    • @DrTraceyMarks
      @DrTraceyMarks  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Jen. RSD is a psychological construct and not a separate diagnosis. That doesn't make it any less important, it just mean someone has given a name to this phenomenon. As a psychiatrist, I tend to focus more on diagnoses and less on terms that are developed. So I don't know enough about the construct to know if it's new or not. As for going to a social worker, many masters level therapist have enough experience to do well with therapy. So it's not necessarily a bad thing. the therapist can't prescribe medication though he would still need to see a psychiatrist or family doctor for that. If he's suicidal, he may have a higher need for treatment than therapy with social worker. Hopefully his therapist will recognize when he needs more help.

Dear Dr. Marks, I've recently been attending a group class for people with anxiety and depression. In it, the hosts have presented the viewpoint that anxiety generally isn't bad for your physiology. But what about the intensity of it, such as duration and its effects on sleep and rest? No mention of that. And so are they right in what they're saying? Or are they denying that being in an anxious state most of the time everyday isn't adverse on the state of the hyppocampus, your heart, the rate at which you age quicker? I heard Jordan Peterson mention that the state of being anxious all of the time is bad for your nervous system because it's like having your pedal to the metal whilst operating the brakes full on, and that you're body is in emergency preparation mode all of the time. Is this arguably true? I mean, isn't stress a killer? Is it?

    • @DrTraceyMarks
      @DrTraceyMarks  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes I agree with Jordan Peterson. Some people will fear that anxiety can make them have a heart attack. That doesn't usually happen unless you already have heart disease. Stress and anxiety can decrease your sleep and chronic sleep deprivation causes medical problems. Chronically high cortisol levels can elevate your blood pressure over time.

Yes there is research supporting the idea that the health of Europe that affects your brain and affects depression. But I don't think we seen yet that changing your gut bacteria works as strongly to treat depression as medication. Also it's not that easy to know how much to change your gut and what you can consume that will be effectively change it enough.

Dr Marks, fantastic video as always. As you know I suffer with generalized anxiety disorder but are used to suffer with panic attacks especially in 2008 prior to my diagnosis of bipolar disorder . Anxiety was Awful before I was medicated remember sitting there in panic mode day after day night after night my adrenal glands must’ve been like dude what are you doing to me hey what was that all over a girl of course that one off to college of course I had trust issues and my instincts were correct she ended up cheating on me stupid b@#$& my first love ❤️. Well I finally met a good psychiatrist which I just lost about 6 months ago because he moved to Tallahassee Florida I’ve had him since 2008 I was finally given this miracle drug called diazepam and I’ve been on 20 mg since 08 I know it was supposed to be for short term but I’ve been at it since then I’m now on 15 MG because of my new psychiatrist is trying to get me off of it so 15 MG of diazepam a.k.a. Valium and then I’m loaded up with Busbar . Anyone deals with anxiety if you don’t mind being on A narcotic drug and you have a valid drivers license and you don’t have a history of drug abuse you can get a diazepam regimen seems like everybody wants me off of it that’s what I’m hearing because when my old psychiatrist left the new ones like oh you’re coming off of it i’m like no I’m not see you later I’ll find somebody else in the new agencies like oh you’re coming off of it I’m like no I’m not navigate this garbage BuSpar I don’t like it they can’t just leave anything alone anyways I’m rambling had better get off of here .
    Thanks for listening

But after being on it for 11 years, and you really want to go super slow. There are other anxiety medications other than antidepressants like Neurontin and Lyrica. They have other side effects like everything else by at least you don't get the dependency with them.

Hi I'm having physical symptoms of anxiety
    Chest pain
Tingling sensations in feet and hands
My Dr advised me to get a vit test and I'm deficient in vit d ... Since I am taking the vit supplements my tingling has vanished and my chest pain has reduced drastically..... I was so happy
But since few days I'm shortness of breath and lump in the throat sensation....
Luckily my chest pain and tingling is reducing everyday...
Should I take meds? Will there be a relapse of the symptoms, especially physical symptoms if I stop the meds after feeling better? These two fears are scaring me and preventing me to go to the psychatrist and take meds...
Also I take counselling since 2 years as I had problems at school and at home... I recovered nicely but idk what has happened to me since 2 months

Hi dr i have a few question hope you are able to answear really important for me. First ive been having anxiety for the past 4 years never experienced anxiety before that and it started with panic attacks constantly and stop two months from when it started an i just stay anxious. 2) about 7 months ago i try zoloft ( sertraline) 50mg only for 2 days because i felt my anxiety a little higher an i wanted to finally do something about it but could only take it for 2 days an stop cold turkey, it provoke me to have severe depression suicidal ideation ( but never hurt myself just scary to have those touths) and really hard to sleep. Before zoloft i would get depressive episode because i would get depressed thinking i cant over my anxiety but it would go away with minutes and never had that. Now am on lexapro 5mg 6 months after zoloft an i feel the depression but not all the time. Just wondering if i have bipolar or just regular depression when i was younger like when i got of high school 18, 19 and even 20 i remeber like once a year or not even in the year i would start to cry for no reason but it would just go away. Am 25 now

If these anxiety cells can be identified and turned on and off so easily in mice and done without drugs; why not in people? Thanks Robin I'm glad you found me. I think they had to put a probe into the mouse's head to use the light to stimulate the cells. As much as people hate medications. I don't think they'll like head probes any better. 🙂 Treatments, even non-medication ones, have a long process for approval and widespread use because all the stones have to be overturned to make sure they were safe and without long-term negative effects.

@@DrTraceyMarks Thank you doctor for replying. I know there is so much to these things, there doesn't seem to be any straight forward answers. I often wonder though if there are healthier known treatments than putting people on drugs that can help but are also harmful. It's easy to prescribe meds and then not continues to help anxiety sufferers any other way. I believe meds are often very necessary, but not the entire answer by a long shot. I'm always looking for more information about anxiety. Some people are just more prone to it. Mice also need to have that anxiety about open spaces to survive. Learning how to use anxiety in a healthy way is what all those suffering long to do. Thank you so much for having these videos that are helpful and also easy to understand and digest.

A few months ago I smoked weed and had a panic attack because I got to high,I was walking around for hours and ended up in a hospital. I had a similar experience again a month later when I smoked again. This is when I was tingling and numb for 8 days. Now I have stopped smoking completely. But a few weeks ago I woke up and felt the sensation again. Now the feeling has been coming for 7-8 days and then goes away for a few days. Well the anxiety cells are in our heads 🙂 I don't think anxiety is all perception. This study shows that. Perception matters, but it's not the whole story. Also, I don't think it's a coincidence that these anxiety cells are in the hippocampus. The hippocampus is where we store memories. So anxiety is a memory/automatic response of sorts.

Hi General repair. the Answer to this is a little complicated because it depends on what is being treated. Bipolar disorder with mixed symptoms is different from acute mania or bipolar depression. here is a resource that is meant for doctors thought might be a little technical, but it has a list of the antipsychotic medications that are used as mood stabilizers and bipolar disorder and it categorizes them by types of bipolar disorder. It's something that you can take to your doctor since it is meant for doctors to interpret.
It's free and you don't need a membership to download the guide.
      cme.psychopharmacologyinstitute.com/document/use-second-generation-antipsychotics-bipolar-disorder-practical-guide/
Lamotrigine will be on that list in is a good anticonvulsant type of mood stabilizer but it works better for bipolar depression and maintenance phase of bipolar disorder so it won't stop an episode in its tracks.

Knowing where anxiety is located in the brain does not help the anxiety sufferer! It is interesting information but thats about it! Learn how to detect anxiety manifesting in your body meditatevly. Look at all the aspects of it - where exactly is it appearing, is it moving, its texture, shape. Be precise and observe it moment by moment. See whether it activates thought, images. Are there reactions to it? Where are they? Become a master of your own anxiety and you will never need anxiety medications that only treat the symptoms and leave you depended and maybe even crippled, just because profit of the pharmaceutical industry is more important than the wellbeing of people!

It shouldn't be looked as something that needs to be eliminated from our lives. We must learn how to live with it When it gets out of control and becomes an anxiety disorder, the source of the problem is usually very complex, it isnt just chemicals in our brains. It usually means that the situation has become overwhelming. There is something in our relationships that's not right. Part of it is dictated even by the economic relations. Dr. Tracey Marks No I mean weaponize as in use this information for the purpose INCREASING anxiety...it can work both ways. Let’s not pretend that there aren’t forms biological weapons have been used in the past, present and future. Don’t believe me go to the national library of medicine website and military patent websites and search for “biological warfare”...example Psychological implications of chemical and biological weapons at www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1121425/
      Also here
      Quote
‘’However, the combination of technological advances now available to terrorists and the very real concerns over the psychological effects resulting from chemical or biological weapon exposure pose a moderate to severe threat to civilian populations and emergency planners.
As such, the implementation of strategies for emergency planners to address the psychological considerations of chemical and biological weapons among civilians and first responders is critical.
Fear is contagious. While it is said that terrorism may kill individuals, it intimidates thousands. Though panic may be the immediate result of a chemical or biological attack, prolonged anxiety among individuals and society as a whole can be crippling.
THE ANATOMY OF CHEMICAL AND BIOLOGICAL WARFARE
Chemical weapons are predominantly man-made and can generate effects in victims within hours or days. They are said to be good for use as terrorist weapons because many of the symptoms created by chemical exposure (e.g. hyperventilation, heart palpitation) can be misdiagnosed as “anxiety and fear” by medical providers.
