I used to be a huge fan of the Grapevine, so I am honestly having a hard time with the new platform because it feels like Black woman erasure imo. I'm with Jimmy and the others who say we do not need POC solidarity. POC have their own stuff. Everything that used to belong to Black ppl, we now have to share: Hip Hop, Black identity (when it's beneficial), natural hair community, etc., so if the women put in front don't look like me, I do not usually support to protect my sanity.
This was a great conversation! I hope that the other communities come forward to really have an open discussion. Staying away just shows how much power & fear are still operating. It's time to be courageous & face these things even with fear. We'll all be better for it.

My close friend is dark skinned and only opened up to me recently about the depths of her experiences and how much different her 'blackness' is to mine, my mum's also dark skinned and honestly it's just not the same thing. It really all needs to be spoken about for proper healing to take place - squishing people into groups is so ignorant ❤

And it's healthy to acknowledge that because those that are shades darker - mocha/ebony shades - do have a different experience. I think this was a great discussion, its upsetting but not surprising to hear all the nonBlack people individually invited to participate eventually each pulled themselves out of this discussion. I hope that changes for you guys in the future. The topics especially on anti-Blackness as an institution in South America, and anti-Blackness as a fight over dynamics of power in Asian communities are important because its always overlooked and purposefully left out and ignored. It feels like often people either conveniently forget or don't know about South America's history with slavery and how we got into this "Mixed Mess" in the first place (rape as one of many vehicles deployed during colonization). It's also super important to hear the Black Latine experience centered over the nonBlack Latine experience in conversations abt anti-Blackness outside of the US. Many times conversations about anti-Blackness especially outside of the US conveniently excludes Black voices. This collaborative effort to combat that by bringing in a range of different Black cultural identities and experiences does a great job in doing so.

This was such a powerful conversation. Absolutely enjoy every minute (wished it was longer). Also, Donovan's last point hit home. People want to be just enough Black (race) to get invited to the cookout, but not too Black to cause discomfortable and disapproval from massa. To lend grace, it might be a trauma response. The colonizers mercilessly beat the African out of our ancestors. They tortured them until death in many cases. That pain lives in us today.
We know who to blame for colorism, so why do we take it out on each other? I think it's stupid. I'm a dark skinned black man, and I've had to come to terms with the fact that my lighter hue brothers are not responsible for my plight. Willie Lynch is alive and well, and we're the ones waiting on him hand and foot.
Yes! As a lightskin woman it’s not my problem to fight or even acknowledge what some darker woman endures, especially when she’s more focused on assimilating with white women. I’ve experienced this time and again in school. Darker women be hellbent on integrating white spaces but what often happens is white women befriended me and my best friend. We were invited to the intimate dinners, museum tours, brunches, etc. The darker girls picked fights with us because they were angry and jealous. What happens is they never confront the white girls. So l moved away from BW spaces. My life is very peaceful now. My friends are all lightskin like me whether black, mixed or biracial. We’re not jealous of each other and we’re content to just be friends with each other. I like darker women but just tired of their crap. Every lightskin woman is not a civil rights worker!

Second, that’s your anecdotal experience, personally I’ve always dealt with hateful jealous light skinned girls. My boyfriend is white and I’m a dark skinned black girl, never dated within my race. And I’ve been targeted by light skinned/mixed women about that constantly especially when I’ve been chosen over them because they feel they’re entitled to be put on a pedestal above me. And the same way you don’t care abt us, we don’t give af abt the fact that you’ve been bullied and treated like 💩 by other dark skinned girls, it’s not our job to sympathize with you.

Really enjoyed this conversation. My only critique is that it could have done with a more practical solutions-based conversation towards the end. When it comes to anti-blackness within and outside our communities, the conversations are great but they seem repetitive. I was just left wanting more answers and practical solutions otherwise we just end up having lots of conversations and little impact on the ground. Anyway, love the work that you and your team are doing Donovan - keep up the wonderful work.

For me when they say Latino community is anti black , I don't see it. If Latin America is so anti black , you wouldn't have a large mixed race population. Cuba , Brazil, do Dominican republic. Majority of the population is mixed race and have African ancestry.

You can be a non black Latin American, have children with a black person and still be anti-black. You may not see it, but it doesn’t mean it’s not there.

Also….as a child I remember fighting with my parents about my actually skin color. I’m a black person but skin is the color brown. Why do we hold on to an identity of a color that majority of us are not? Like we can be dark skin but not necessarily literally black.

I can't believe the way they answered the question of the use of term BIPOC. They answered as if the term is used in place of Black or any other of the disignations we use. It speaks to our relationship with other people in terms of being victimized by Whiteness. It doesn't speak to our singular identity. What does indigenous mean in the context of BIPOC anyway? 'Indigenous people' is almost always used in relationship to white colonization. I'm sorry but it seems younger generation make things unnecessarily complicated. This speaks to another of the divides that exist among us Black people - the generational divide. Granted as Baby Boommers my generation dropped the baton, but subsequent generations have to learn from our mistakes and be more responsible than we were and be able to think more critically. More critical thinking is needed where as most people only seem to be thinking in terms of critical race theory. Is there really much practical use in the practice of academic theoretical thinking on the part of the average person?
I find it interesting when talking about Black Latin Caribbean countries, Haiti is the only country mentioned. Technically many of our French speaking Carib nations are technically Latin American as their languages derive from Latin. St. Lucia, St. Martin, Martinique are two that come to mind. I think the term Latino/a has been hijacked to only mean Hispanics or those with a Spanish cultural influence. We literally have different titles for these groups - Hispanic or Latin but due mostly to colorism Black countries get left out of the Latin conversation. Brazil doesn't have an issue with being identified as Latin yet Haiti does...their difference is Black people represent Haiti globally while Brazil is represented by mixed/white individuals.
We haven't acheived unity among ourselves, after over half a century of a call for it. In fact we are growing further apart. KRS-One has said Hip-Hop should be an ethnicity within itself. As if Hip-Hop has any real power to construct anything of substantive concrete value. In this its 50 year anniversary it is being promoted as having changed the world, when it didn't even change the communitiews it came out of nor the people who live in them. The few areas we have unity in are superficial. We follow fads lock in step and use the same slang terms and rhectoric. Can Black people for once be honest with themselves as a group would be a constructive question to ask, if we were to aks and take it seriously in terms of actually trying to solve a problem rather than just repeatedly discuss it with the same rhectoric.

I am creole from both parent’s. I do identify as black. I’ve confused many people with my name, hair texture and skin color. But I’m a very proud black woman. I’m 51 years old and still have to tell people that I’m black. I’ve never felt that I was better than darker blacks. I’ve always wanted to look black. I have 3 kids, 2 are boys, and 1 daughter. My daughter and youngest son look black. I’m very proud about that yet scared. My youngest, which is a boy, is very big for being 12. My husband and I continually Give the talk. He reminds me of Tamir Rice. Why should we have to be scared because of his appearance. I was in the 6th grade when I found out that I was a mixture. There is a bit of Filipino, hence the last name. I had always known I was black until we moved from south central Los Angeles to all white people in the Central Valley. There’s not much lack pride here. I’ve been told by many people, especially whites, that I should just pass. Never have and never will. I do see that I have the privilege of ambiguity. But I’ve seen my husband constantly being harassed by the cops. I’m glad I found this channel. I used to be angry when people asked what ethnicity I am and told I wasn’t black enough. Seeing this channel has made me stop feeling sorry for myself.
These days is just a seems like people are having conversations to see who's the biggest victim! The damage that's being done is spiraling out of control.
Here's a challenge for 2023. For any one who truly feels this way about the world, they should go out a make friends with anyone they have ill assumptions about regarding race, gender, orientation, religion, eye color, whatever. See how it goes and if it challenges their assumptions or reinforces it. If they accept this challenge I wonder what the discussion would look like after going those experiences, and if the rhetoric stays the same.

There's unity if you WANT unity. I don't think a lot of y'all want it like you think you do. I have unity, camaraderie, and acceptance among many people I come across because I seek it. Yes there are assholes, but they are few and far between and have nothing to do with race, religion, or any other BS dividers. So yeah if you WANT unity go SEEK unity!
People are hurting. Some don't know how to let it go, and others don't want to. Those people need to recognize their trauma, and seek that healing before they can seek unity.

What's crazy is I'm the lightest skinned in my family. Now between me and all my siblings, two of which are dark skinned; I have by far gone through the most racism. That's not just my thoughts, my siblings have actually told me this. The crazy part about racism when it comes to lightskinned people is that there are some White people who treat me different because of my skin; but MOST Black people treat me differently too. It kinda feels like you're being rejected by both sides!

POC accountability? Many POC have faced worse discrimination than any American. I find that jealousy and resentment play a huge role in this. People have had their countries blown up or are purposely being starved and come here and face discrimination from people who should be compassionate and allies.
Many POC also come here and think they are better than Americans and other black people. They even felt that way in their own countries before they had to flee. I think both groups could do better

All the complaining, whining and victimisation, because people of other ethnicities and cultures, showed you solidarity, encouragement, support for Black liberation. Not only you're implying that your allies are not being honest, that we're crisis actors and deceivers, you're demanding that we do more. False symbols of solidarity to basically get black people to shut up then go back home to your parents calling them mayates and khalis etc. Indians, Arabs and Hispacis (whether it's a race or not) can be very anti-black and saying you come in peace without proving it does nothing. There was just a black girl crying because she applied for a job asking for a fluent English speaker and then chose a Hispanic girl and then told her she needed to speak Spanish. They just wanted to hire a non-black hispanic but tried to make it seem it was because of Spanish.

Also….as a child I remember fighting with my parents about my actually skin color. I’m a black person but skin is the color brown. Why do we hold on to an identity of a color that majority of us are not? Like we can be dark skin but not necessarily literally black.

I can't believe the way they answered the question of the use of term BIPOC. They answered as if the term is used in place of Black or any other of the disignations we use. It speaks to our relationship with other people in terms of being victimized by Whiteness. It doesn't speak to our singular identity. What does indigenous mean in the context of BIPOC anyway? 'Indigenous people' is almost always used in relationship to white colonization. I'm sorry but it seems younger generation make things unnecessarily complicated. This speaks to another of the divides that exist among us Black people - the generational divide. Granted as Baby Boommers my generation dropped the baton, but subsequent generations have to learn from our mistakes and be more responsible than we were and be able to think more critically. More critical thinking is needed where as most people only seem to be thinking in terms of critical race theory. Is there really much practical use in the practice of academic theoretical thinking on the part of the average person?

I find it interesting when talking about Black Latin Caribbean countries, Haiti is the only country mentioned. Technically many of our French speaking Carib nations are technically Latin American as their languages derive from Latin. St. Lucia, St. Martin, Martinique are two that come to mind. I think the term Latino/a has been hijacked to only mean Hispanics or those with a Spanish cultural influence. We literally have different titles for these groups - Hispanic or Latin but due mostly to colorism Black countries get left out of the Latin conversation. Brazil doesn't have an issue with being identified as Latin yet Haiti does...their difference is Black people represent Haiti globally while Brazil is represented by mixed/white individuals.

We haven't acheived unity among ourselves, after over half a century of a call for it. In fact we are growing further apart. KRS-One has said Hip-Hop should be an ethnicity within itself. As if Hip-Hop has any real power to construct anything of substantive concrete value. In this its 50 year anniversary it is being promoted as having changed the world, when it didn't even change the communitiews it came out of nor the people who live in them. The few areas we have unity in are superficial. We follow fads lock in step and use the same slang terms and rhectoric. Can Black people for once be honest with themselves as a group would be a constructive question to ask, if we were to aks and take it seriously in terms of actually trying to solve a problem rather than just repeatedly discuss it with the same rhectoric.

I am creole from both parent’s. I do identify as black. I’ve confused many people with my name, hair texture and skin color. But I’m a very proud black woman. I’m 51 years old and still have to tell people that I’m black. I’ve never felt that I was better than darker blacks. I’ve always wanted to look black. I have 3 kids, 2 are boys, and 1 daughter. My daughter and youngest son look black. I’m very proud about that yet scared. My youngest, which is a boy, is very big for being 12. My husband and I continually Give the talk. He reminds me of Tamir Rice. Why should we have to be scared because of his appearance. I was in the 6th grade when I found out that I was a mixture. There is a bit of Filipino, hence the last name. I had always known I was black until we moved from south central Los Angeles to all white people in the Central Valley. There’s not much lack pride here. I’ve been told by many people, especially whites, that I should just pass. Never have and never will. I do see that I have the privilege of ambiguity. But I’ve seen my husband constantly being harassed by the cops. I’m glad I found this channel. I used to be angry when people asked what ethnicity I am and told I wasn’t black enough. Seeing this channel has made me stop feeling sorry for myself.
These days is just a seems like people are having conversations to see who's the biggest victim! The damage that's being done is spiraling out of control.
Here's a challenge for 2023. For any one who truly feels this way about the world, they should go out a make friends with anyone they have ill assumptions about regarding race, gender, orientation, religion, eye color, whatever. See how it goes and if it challenges their assumptions or reinforces it. If they accept this challenge I wonder what the discussion would look like after going those experiences, and if the rhetoric stays the same.

There's unity if you WANT unity. I don't think a lot of y'all want it like you think you do. I have unity, camaraderie, and acceptance among many people I come across because I seek it. Yes there are assholes, but they are few and far between and have nothing to do with race, religion, or any other BS dividers.

People are hurting. Some don't know how to let it go, and others don't want to. Those people need to recognize their trauma, and seek that healing before they can seek unity.

What's crazy is I'm the lightest skinned in my family. Now between me and all my siblings, two of which are dark skinned; I have by far gone through the most racism. That's not just my thoughts, my siblings have actually told me this. The crazy part about racism when it comes to lightskinned people is that there are some White people who treat me different because of my skin; but MOST Black people treat me differently too. It kinda feels like you're being rejected by both sides!
I think this side of the experience isn't discussed enough.

This convo was okay but i think it speaks volumes there were no south or east asians in the convo when they are the other half of POC.
POC accountability? Many POC have faced worse discrimination than any American. I find that jealousy and resentment play a huge role in this. People have had their countries blown up or are purposely being starved and come here and face discrimination from people who should be compassionate and allies.
Then go home a fix your country don't come here being arrogant and finger pointing we got our own shit going on
Many POC also come here and think they are better than Americans and other black people. They even felt that way in their own countries before they had to flee. I think both groups could do better

There was just a black girl crying because she applied for a job asking for a fluent English speaker and then chose a Hispanic girl and then told her she needed to speak Spanish. They just wanted to hire a non-black hispanic but tried to make it seem it was because of Spanish.
