I hope this video goes viral in the canning community because this is SUCH an important topic that I honestly can not recall anyone ever touching on.... and I have been canning for 10 years now! I am so glad you made this video, Sis! Who knows how many others this information will help! xoxox
You are so right, Heather! I've been canning for 60 years, watched about half the TH-cam ladies canning their own, seen videos on things I never thought to can, seen videos I prayed they wouldn't kill their whole family with those jars, seen people 4x more careful than me, and hoped they'd stop being so fearful, but I think THIS video is the most important one I ever saw on canning. I don't even know if MY stove is still 100% level! water in a pot, and grease in a skillet seems even enough. Things cook evenly. Cakes aren't high on one side, but 100% level?? I'm going to find out before I make Cowboy Candy on Tuesday.
I love my gas stove with it's big heavy crates , but have had the exact same issue with the feet not fitting perfectly in the grooves , as well as the burner cover not being completely on the burner , which means it won't ignite Thank goodness the unlevel part , hasn't happened when I was canning , but now this happened to you , I will be even more on the alert . THANK YOU , I am so sorry this happened to you .
As a long time nurse, I can't tell you how important it is to trust your gut. It's often been, for me, a literal life saving thing. Yes really, lives have been saved by calling a doctor in the middle of the night. Use your gut for everything! This just proves that it's there to keep you safe. Thanks for sharing, Constance. It could save a life
Bummer, thank you for sharing all the valuable info!! My father always said "don't listen to your gut, obey it!" Have a peaceful Shabbat! Shalom from Wisconsin ❤❤❤
Thank you for posting this. It doesn't matter how long a person has canned; for whatever reason, we miscalculate, we get distracted, the power goes out, something happens that we didn't expect.
Oh gosh, thats exactly what Happened to me yesterday canning in my AllAmerican 930. It was taking so much time to come up to pressure. I figured my entire bottom layer of meat sauce was going to be scorched badly. What happened is the bottom layer ALL 7 JARS SIPHONED. The top 7 were fine, and all of the jars sealed properly. It was the weirdest experience I've ever had! Thanks for sharing. Now im going to check out my burners before putting that big load on there.❤
Hey! Glad you posted this. Once I followed another YT with canning beans… but I changed to black beans… the Amt did differ…thus they buckled the lids. It’s a learning lesson. I did not check the NATIONAL CENTER FOR FOOD PRESERVATION like I should have. Sometimes we learn the hard way. Thankfully no one was harmed. The Book is on my counter ALL the time now.
You had a day where everything was in question. At least it was done day of all of this at once for you, and not something this day and something the next day and then the next. I'm glad your canner didn't run dry.
We really prefer the texture of presoaked beans when canning. So sorry about the canning failure...thanks for sharing. It's so important to learn that bloopers and failures can happen to everyone.
This is So important. An uneven gas stove can over time build up dirt and wear up in your jets. Dirty jets can cause a sudden burst of highly dangerous flames. I'm talking like a flame thrower. I know because i rented and it was in an old house, old stove and it almost set me on fire! Level the stove and clean the jets! It will save your life! No joke! Thanks for posting this Constance❣️
I hate it that all of this happened to you, but I am so glad that you shared it with us. It could happen to any of us. It makes us more diligent to th process. Thank you, Ms. Constance, for sharing that we need to be patient and pay attention.
Wow! I am so glad to see this. Nothing in my home is level. Especially not in my kitchen. I have had issues with my small pressure cooker burning or quickly running dry. Now i know what’s going on. I didn’t know beinf level was important. Thank you!
Thankyou Constance, for caring enough about others, to make this video. There would be makers out there who would have covered this over, and kept a false front...but you had the guts to face up, and teach us all. You didn't have to, but you chose to. The best kind of teachers do that!... Your first priority is us out here. And we will remember the lesson because of that, and because you took us through the process, told us the story (what you thought and felt, As Well As what you did), and so now we can learn from your experience, and not have to "reinvent the wheel". Thankyou for not breaking trust with us, Constance. Much, much appreciated. [And my stove is Not Level!! 😕 ] 🙂👍❤🫂
Oh wow! I am canning beef today and have grates just like that on mine. I will now always double check that before starting. Thank you so much for sharing.
Mine isn't level😳. I've only done the pressure canner for bone broth and maybe corn. I have used the water bath mostly. So glad to see this because I really wanted to pressure can this weekend. Something told me no last weekend. Time is scarce. Wondering, maybe that was why I didn't get the jiggle I expected. I just assumed it was because of a glass top.
Oh my goodness! I've never heard of that happening but it makes so much sense. There's so much truth to statements about how much you learn from experience and that you never stop learning. Thanks for sharing so we can learn from your experience and I'm so glad it hadn't boiled dry on you. It still sucks to spend all that time canning (my AA takes quite a while) and have it wrecked.
Glad you shared this video. I ordered mine during covid and it was $359. It took 6 months or so to get it. They had gone up like $50 after that, I have the one that you can do 14 qts.
Thank you for sharing this with us all. I believe it is important that we see the good, the bad and the ugly of canning. It makes us better canners. I am sure that there are youtubers out there that would feel too embarrassed to share their mistakes. There is only one perfect out there. And that is our God. Thank you Constance. Have a blessed day.
I had that same problem about 15 years ago when I purchased a new stove. I learned the hard way that the feet on the stove were unlevel but only about an 1/4 inch. Lost 20 pints of chicken. Thanks for sharing because this is something I have never mentioned in canning videos. I will next time I do a video.
Yes it happened too me . I thank you for reminding me and others this can happen . Canning takes a lot of time but also a complete attention and respect. 56 years canning here and I still have too remember what can mess up your canning.
Thanks for this video. Sometimes when I am canning I get in a hurry. Nothing has ever happened, but this reminds me that with something like canning I need to stop and follow each step to make sure that everything is the way it is supposed to be. I have had jars fail and every time it has been operator error. I am glad that you did not have to end up getting a new canner.
It's so easily done Constance. We get caught up in our tasks and moving forward getting them done ignoring our gut to take a moment and ask the why. Thank goodness you worked it out and shared a valuable teachable moment for many canners to learn from. ❤
Everything happens for a reason. The reason may have been to get you to think about the outside canning stove. Thanks for the info! Much Love and Blessings
I am not a canner yet but hope to start within the next few years and this was absolutely informative! These are the types of videos I need to watch so that I can be successful in the future. Thank you for sharing because this is definitely something that everyone should be aware of. Canning is not always 100% perfect every time.
Hi Constance! Thanks for all the Prayers! Please keep them coming. When we have our Health we have everything! You’re so Honest & that’s why we Love everything you do … other content maker’s would not have showed this bean mistake! Love your dress you look beautiful!🙏🙏Blessing’s
🙋🏼♀️Thank you Constance! As I was watching you so earnestly explain in detail your canning circumstances; I had a sense that You averted a very major accident for someone watching. Bless you for sharing this experience with your subscribers.🌹
What life’s accomplishment! You’re hitting your stride and stronger than ever - keep it up sister for you are doing His work and blessing so many lives by sharing yours
Thank you for being so honest and informative. I am fairly new to canning, and I'm still nervous . Anytime I can I'm so afraid I night screw things uo. It's s good to hear that no matter your experience, you're still going to make mistakes and learn new lessons. Thank you for sharing.
I think it’s good to share it all. Someone will learn from it. I did just the opposite when measuring dry beans. I didn’t check the chart and overfilled. Of course the beans swelled more than I expected and every jar siphoned. A Lot! We ate them but they were some dried out beans even with adding liquid when heating. Oh well.
I've never done anything but pinto, cranberry, and kidneys. I never would have known about navy beans. Thank you for this video. I'm sure glad your canner is ok that would have really hurt.
Constance, I have the same type of stove and had the same thing happen with my grate not getting back right. Thankfully, it wasn't during canning or anything, but it wasn't immediately noticeable.
Wow, thanks for sharing your experience. It is sure to really help others understand what absolutely can happen no matter how long one has been canning.
Thank you so much for this info. My stove was installed by the company I bought my stove from. We put the level on it and found it is way off and not level at all. I never would have thought about this. I do not even remember seeing them level the stove when it was installed. Live and learn, thank you again for the tip
Thank you so much for sharing this! We just had a gas line run to our kitchen so that I can purchase a gas stove and a pressure canner. This is great information since I have never cooked on a gas stove. Also, I am glad that you didn't ruin your beautiful All American Canner!
Thank you for sharing this info. It's vital since there are so many beginner canners out there these days. I didn't realize how important a level stove is either! It also speaks to the importance of following the tested recipes for canning beans. I just realized that's why they say to soak overnight and parboil 30 minutes prior to canning; by then, most of the swelling has taken place and you can know exactly how full to fill your jars.
Thanks Constance for sharing this. I too, would have never thought of this. I look forward to seeing you do some canning outside and seeing your set up. Have a blessed day!
I’m so glad this wasn’t a bigger disaster. I never would have guessed your issue would have caused so much trouble either. Thank you for sharing this experience.
Thanks so much for sharing! Trusting our gut is a real thing! Sorry you went to all that trouble and very thankful it wasn’t worse than that. It wasn’t for nothing, you have shared this and that is important! Thanks!
@12:25 she says what was wrong and why everything when haywire. Nobody and nothing was hurt, but could have been a very expensive mistake. Thanks so much for this information. I have very little experience with canning would have never known!
What an important video to share! There are so many little tiny things that make a WORLD of difference. Thank you so very much for taking the time to make such an important video and sharing!
I have nearly 50 years of canning experience. I have a lot of memories as a child helping can outside in a washtub on an open fire. Even with years of canning experience I'm still learning. I have had my share of mistakes however I always try to find the positive in the negative. What can I learn from my mistakes? A mistake can be very disappointing but a mistake is only truly a failure if we fail to learn from our mistakes. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for posting this because that is a very valid issue that we didn't even think of. It's very scary. I'm grateful it wasn't worse than it was. ❤ I'm sharing across all my social media sites.
I am so sorry that you had this Experience, but I am glad that you are taking the time to let us know, to explain in great detail what happened, and how to avoid this...But also you expressed the need to or remind us that when we can our full attention needs to be on the entire process. We are so lucky for you showing and explaining this and I am glad that nothing really bad happened and that you were not hurt.
I use an electric pressure canner but have been thinking of getting a pressure canner and this is invaluable information! You may have saved me from a very expensive mistake. And I am grateful that you are sharing this lesson with those of us who are new to canning. Thank you!
I have only been pressure canning for 2 yrs with a 921 All American. I found it really frustrating to get the lid on level. So, I measured the gap in the between the seated lid and the canner. I made spacers to keep the lid level until tighten the toggles. I also use my camp stove to do my canning. Thanks for the video.
Hi Constance, :) Thank you for a really honest video that I know will be helpful to more than one person out there at least. As Kneady Homesteader said, It's a very important topic and I hope people are watching and that the ones watching do some sharing and passing along the info. Those canners are very expensive ( I can't afford one of those right now) And people need to know what to look for and what can happen. This isn't something in the instruction book. This comes with user knowledge, and we appreciate that we could learn from you instead of the hard way with a very expensive mistake. Thanks much :)
Wow, never knew I could level my stove!! Defiantly going to check it tomorrow. When I cook, the butter, oil,etc seems to run to the left! Now, I know possibly why. Thank you!
Thank you for a great teaching video. My canning is done outside on a gas camp stove. My husband always helps me set up. He makes sure my stove is level and adds boards and shims to make it level. Say a prayer for me in a couple of weeks I'll be doing a demo of black beans. A dear coworker asked me to do this. I am nervous and excited.
I had a similar experience with my All American canner, also canning navy beans, except my mistake was a lid that wasn’t on straight. Steam started coming out from under the lid, the canner got to the proper pressure on the dial but the jiggler didn’t jiggle. After letting the canner cool down, reseating the lid, and reprocessing the beans, I ended up with all jars failing to seal so into the freezer they went. I cleaned the canner well and also replaced a few parts (my canner is 30 years old). No more problems. Thanks for your informative videos! God bless!
I came over from Heather's channel. So glad you made this video and to find you through her! I hope to start canning this summer, and though I won't start out pressure canning, if I ever do I'll be so glad to know this! Thank you for sharing this info!!!
Thank you for this video. I have the same issue when I clean my stove . Sometime the grate don’t are “align”’and when I go back to put my pans on the stove the pans are not level. I don’t can too often but I do appreciate this video. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I am glad your canner is ok.
This is an important video. Some one once said to me, "hurry up and slow down." At the time, I had no idea what she was saying to me, but I learned. I'm glad you didn't ruin your canner. I have an All American canner as well, and they are expensive! One thing I never thought about was the emergency pressure plug. Apparently, it needs to be checked yearly regardless of how much canning is actually done. I always checked it, but I never took into account how the plug could become dry and crack. Then I heard from a fellow canner how her emergency pressure plug broke and she had hot steam all over her kitchen. It is only by G-d's grace that she wasn't standing over the canner when the gasket/plug blew. Now I replace this plug yearly regardless. Apparently this is true of all canners, not just the All American. Be well!
Thank you for sharing this. I also have a gas stove and the thought never crossed my mind to check the placement of the grates before I started my canner.
I hope this video goes viral in the canning community because this is SUCH an important topic that I honestly can not recall anyone ever touching on.... and I have been canning for 10 years now! I am so glad you made this video, Sis! Who knows how many others this information will help! xoxox
This is The Most Important video you will ever make!
Thank you so much! I definitely hope that it helps someone else, and prevents others from having a very bad day.

That’s what makes you such a good teacher. You teach the positive and the negative of what can easily happen to anyone!
Thank you 😊

We really prefer the texture of presoaked beans when canning. So sorry about the canning failure...thanks for sharing. It's so important to learn that bloopers and failures can happen to everyone.
Such a great reminder to take your time, and pay attention to details. When we have canned a lot, sometimes we become complacent. Thank you ❤
Thank you for explaining your mistakes and offering this warning to your fellow canners.
Everyone please be safe! Double check everything.
So smart and even smarter to share this lesson. In fact , the manufacturers should be adding this info to their user manuals.
Thank you! I will add that check to my list of things to check before canning. I use a 1946 all American canner…. No safety valve.
This is So important. An uneven gas stove can over time build up dirt and wear up in your jets. Dirty jets can cause a sudden burst of highly dangerous flames. I'm talking like a flame thrower. Great video. Thanks so much for your work. I have canned for over 50 years and know nothing is too small to teach when it comes to this craft.
I hate it that all of this happened to you, but I am so glad that you shared it with us. It could happen to any of us. It makes us more diligent to th process. Thank you, Ms. Constance, for sharing that we need to be patient and pay attention.
Absolutely!
THANK you* so much. I will def. Check the level on my stove when I get back to Michigan👍

I would have never guessed that level was so Important so glad I found your channel!!
Thank you! 😊
I never knew I needed to level my stovetop. This explains so much of what I've had happening. THANK YOU!
Absolutely!

I am so glad you found this and it did not ruin your canner!
Me too!!!
Thank you Sister for this lesson, I did the too low amount of beans also couple years ago. At least you're OK and didn't lose a canner
Glad you shared this video. I ordered mine during covid and it was $359. It took 6 months or so to get it. They had gone up like $50 after that, I have the one that you can do 14 qts.

A mistake can be very disappointing but a mistake is only truly a failure if we fail to learn from our mistakes. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you. You are a blessing. I’m so sorry you went through this.
Thank you for posting this because that is a very valid issue that we didn't even think of. It's very scary. I'm grateful it wasn't worse than it was.
❤
I'm sharing across all my social media sites.
Thank you so much, me too!
Thanks for the info. Im going to have Hubby make dure our stove is level asap.
I’m glad you are ok.
Thank you for posting this! Even though we try hard to put the grates back properly after cleaning, I will now double check before canning.
Thank you! I have 5 lb of navy beans from Azure right now waiting to be canned up. I’ll be sure to watch my measurements when filling my jars.
Thank you!
Same here
Thank you, Constance.
You can do it!!!
God bless!
A very valuable video!!! Thanks for keeping it real & letting us all learn from your mistakes. So glad it wasn't worse for you.
I came over from Heather's channel. So glad you made this video and to find you through her! I hope to start canning this summer, and though I won't start out pressure canning, if I ever do I'll be so glad to know this! Thank you for sharing this info!!!
Thank you so so much for this video. I know i learned from it. And from now on i will always remember this.
Be well!
I never would have thought of that. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for sharing this. I also have a gas stove and the thought never crossed my mind to check the placement of the grates before I started my canner.
