fixing "SEIZED” porter cable impact wrench (manufacture defect)

  • I was surprised when I opened up the torque wrench and found out what the problem actually was. I’ve had problems with other electric impact wrenches, but this was a manufacture defect. The two plastic pieces that spin very close to each other had no lubrication. They actually plastic welded themselves together. Silicone grease is safe for plastic so I cleaned everything up and lubricated between the two plastic plates. It works now, but the engineers really need to take a look at this problem.

My PC Impact wrench went out about 5 years ago. It was used a couple times and failed on me. Its been sitting in the garage for years. I found your video today and it was easy to follow. My wrench is working again! Darn thing looks new.😂 Thanks for this video!

This corded impact wrench is the Porter Cable PCE211. I recently decided to buy it because I wanted something with a little more torque than my my 30 year old Harbor Freight one. This video is the best on TH-cam on how to disassemble and reassemble the unit .
Here are a few fine points to make the task go smoother:
    - Be proactive and lube the disc before you have it jam up on you. I used a tube of Super Lube synthetic silicone grease. The reason why the plastic disc contacts the fan assembly is because of the pressure placed on the center shaft when pushing the impact wrench onto the nut / bolt.
    - This is also the perfect time to add extra grease to the gears and mechanical parts. The grease looks to be compatible.
-The ideal hex wrench to remove the four main housing screws for me was a long number 3 metric.
    - Insert the long finishing nails on the brush clips BEFORE removing the motor shaft.
    - Be careful when adding grease to the black disc. It should be placed away from the center hole to prevent grease from getting to the motor windings. Look at the video showing the wear marks on the black disc as a guide.
    - Upon reassembly, be sure to install the grip handle BEFORE putting the motor shaft back into the housing.
    - It would be ideal to install the same screws in the same holes they came from. I didn't do this and had a hard time reinstalling a few. Don't over tighten the screws since they are going into plastic.
    - Some people suggest removing this disc altogether but this modification may void your warranty.

Mine seized today and it is fairly new with very little use. Very disappointed that an almost new tool seized just removing lug nuts. Lost some faith in Porte Cable after today. I have many other PC tools that have never failed hope this is not a trend for PC tools.
Thank you for your video it is just what I needed.

Just tried this out and it works great! Sure enough, the black plastic ring had melded to the white wheel. Thank you for this video!

This is a great DYI video... THANK YOU! I thought I was going to have to toss this impact wrench out! I am fixing it this time, but probably will avoid P&C from now on though... my P&C faming saw died 6 months ago.

I still ordered this impact, because it is the most powerful corded impact on the market.

Just had the same issue with my Porter Cable. I was ready to contact the warranty people but went on line first to see what I could dig up. Discovered this video and resolved the problem. Thanks for posting.

Awesome video! Thank you! To prevent the brushes from falling in, I first took off the back cover and secured the brushes using nails (like in your video) and then removed the motor.

Thanks for the fix video. I ordered one of these yesterday, and glad to know I can fix it in the future.
UPDATE: I got my new Porter today and took it completely apart like you did in your video. I put grease on the "dry" plastic layer you said. Best idea and thanks for your video. I like taking new tool completely apart the day I get them? But in this case - It was worth it. Thank you again.

    Same issue with mine.
Thanks for posting - your video was right on.
I looked at Amazon reviews and there were many, many pages of ONE Star reviews with this exact issue. NOT even one response from Porter Cable.
    SHAME on them!

I was just thinking about buying one of these and looking for reviews I found this video. I think your video is awesome but I also think someone has to sue Porter cable and make them to perform an upgrade or recall on these devices. It's not fair for costumers to have to deal with design flaws.

I just bought one of these last night. I proactively greased it. Probably voided the warranty, too. If you don't have silicone grease, white lithium grease is safe for plastics as well. We use it all the time in model railroading.

Bought one. After seeing this video I decided to do pre-maintenance and take it apart to grease the plastic parts as shown in this video. I used Super Lube synthetic grease with PTFE, -45F-450F degree, dielectric and safe for plastics and much cheaper than the silicon grease. I purchased the synthetic grease, 3oz, at Harbor Freight for $7,99. Simple fix: number 2 phillips, a metric number 4 Allen wrench and two 2 1/2" nails to go across the brush spings. Put back together, been using it ever since to do lug nuts. Running strong, no issues thus far. Thanks for the video

I received my Porter Cable impact wrench 2 weeks ago. The first thing I did was apply di-electric grease to the motor fan like they have the tendency for the plastic to weld itself to. I have used it to remove the pinion nut on my mustangs rear diff, driveshaft bolts, axle nuts and lawn mower blades on our riding lawn mower. I am very impressed with this $85 impact on ebay!

That piece is a "fan shroud", it is used to concentrate the air flow through the motor. I see that you are having a problem with this coming into contact with the fan but unfortunately if you put grease on it you are only going to create a new problem. As dust is drawn through the tools it will mix with the grease and create a thick sticky mess that will slow the motor down. Unless there is some way to modify the fan shroud to create more clearance I personally don't see permanent solution to this. Good luck

I removed the whole that black thing. Pros: torque was improved, problem solved. Cons: Ventilation should be slightly reduced.

I was actually really surprised, when I saw a porter cable but there’s two plastic pieces so close together without any lubrication. I don’t know if the private label this, or if they actually engineered it. Besides this issue it’s been working as good as the harbor freight one that I had for six years before I got this one. After seeing this I kind of wish I went with the Harbor freight one again. With the discount on the porter cable both were about the same price. I figured the Porter cable should be better. Hopefully they’ll fix this problem in the future

@@livefree6878 it looks like it pretty well made but u probably could get one as good for less at harbor freight. I shop lawn shops . Got a porter cable impact driver for 20 bucks yesterday.

OK. I guess I won't buy one then. Putting grease is not a good solution, you're just asking for trouble getting grease on the motor, or collecting dirt. Just remove the black ring thing, the fan shroud.
