I became a fan of Herbie Mann in the early 1970s, when I was in college. I recently learned his birth name was actually Herbert Jay Solomon, and he was born in NYC. RIP Herbie Mann.

Thanks. I didn't know that. But, that reminds me... Herb Alpert, who you probably remember for his Mexican influenced pop recordings with the Tijuana Brass was born and raised in the Boyle Heights section of Eastside Los Angeles. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Radomyshl (in present-day Ukraine) and Romania.[

May he Rest In Peace , he has given us so much listening pleasure. Just compare his skills with what is passed on as music these days!

Funny - he says it is the 98-version of the song - as usual: Ten years ahead!

Funny that Herbie says that this was in 1998!

He didn't say it was 98, he said this was the 98 version - evidently written the previous year.

Where's the crown off of Herbie's headjoint? Makes it sound great even without it.

My guess is that he replaced it with a pick up that he could plug right into. I had a Barcus Berry version in the '70's. I remember reading that he used a Frap pick up. This was just before clip mic's began becoming the standard for wind instruments.

Nowhere near as good as The village Gate version.

True - it's hard to top a classic.

oh, I dunno, I think the Village Gate version is a classic, but I like this more funky modern version as well, I think they both stand on their own.

Sorry, and with all respect to the late Herbie Mann, but I prefer the original version. Don't try to improve what we already know and love.
