Herb Alpert, who you probably remember for his Mexican influenced pop recordings with the Tijuana Brass was born and raised in the Boyle Heights section of Eastside Los Angeles. His parents were Jewish immigrants from Radomyshl (in present-day Ukraine) and Romania.[
My guess is that he replaced it with a pick up that he could plug right into. I had a Barcus Berry version in the '70's. I remember reading that he used a Frap pick up. This was just before clip mic's began becoming the standard for wind instruments.

He didn't say it was 98, he said this was the 98 version - evidently written the previous year.

oh, I dunno, I think the Village Gate version is a classic, but I like this more funky modern version as well, I think they both stand on their own.
Sorry, and with all respect to the late Herbie Mann, but I prefer the original version. Don't try to improve what we already know and love.
