YES. I don’t understand why they praise the movie while it is disgusting on so many levels. The acting - great, the costumes - wonderful, the camera - awesome. But the plot?! Sick fantasy. Not to mention ridiculous way she discovered pleasure, if I can say so. Pure male gaze.

I definitely see this viewpoint as the themes of sexuality and men using bella in the film DO border on pedophilic. However, in my perception this was intentional. I think the discomfort of the way people viewed her and her sex was meant to draw attention to the sexualization of little girls and the gross ways that patriarchal society views women. We start the film seeing Bella as “the perfect woman” according to male standards which IS disgusting and makes us rightly uncomfortable as the things they like about her are her naïveté and childish traits (along with her young woman’s body). However, by the end of the film she has reclaimed this abuse she endured in her “childhood” through being a sex worker in her (what I assume to be late teens early twenties mental development-wise) by the end her mind has caught up with her body and she is studying to be a doctor. I don’t see the empowerment being purely sexual, her growth includes that yes, but at the end of the day she becomes INTELLECTUALLY empowered through her love of and eventual inheritance of her ‘father’s’ surgery.

Whether or not these themes were intended by lanthimos and the other people who worked on this film I don’t know. However, this is how the film landed with me and I certainly related to the film near the end while ALSO acknowledging that the premise is disturbing and pedophilic.

Hugely disagree. This will be a long comment, but I do want to talk about this movie. Now, yes, the main character does have the brain of a kid. That is something that is irrefutable. However, the fact that the child character has sex with adults is never portrayed as a good thing in the film. The characters that take advantage of her are seen as pathetic, restrictive, and vile. Hell, while Bella enjoys sex in the film, she doesn’t want to do it 24/7. In the first bit of the film, sure, but that’s only when she discovers sex. Bella has a very simple mind and she loves discovering new things. When she discovers things she likes, she wants to learn more about that thing. First it’s the world itself and then she learns about sex. Duncan, who is a massive part of the film that this video kind of ignores a little, is the main character who takes advantage of Bella in the film. He only wants to use her for sex and sees her only as a child who knows nothing about the world. He uses Bella’s naive nature for his own personal pleasure. It’s only when Bella starts to go against his own image of the world that he starts to get frustrated with her. She starts going off on her own, she denies him sex, she learns literature, gives money to the poor, everything Duncan doesn’t want. Duncan, the male character wants to keep Bella, the girl child, as a simple sex object with no real view or perspective of the world itself. I think the idea that Poor Things is just “a child having sex” ignores everything else about the movie. This isn’t a movie for everyone and I accept that. There are more flavors than vanilla for a reason, so if you don’t enjoy it, cool. I just like it a lot and I hope you can at least understand my perspective. Thanks for reading!

This is why I love making content like this cause it allows me to see things from other peoples point of views I like the points your making and I agree Duncan the so called womanizer promises Bella a sense of freedom but really he’s the most controlling and I can see why these deeper themes connect with so many people but for me when it came to the points of interest the movie deviated from any points of meaning but I very much enjoyed reading your comment allows me to see the other side of the coin so thank you

this movie was one of the most unpleasant movies i've seen in A WHILE. while watching, i felt like i was crazy for not liking it, so i'm glad someone shares my opinion. the sex scenes made me wildly uncomfortable, especially the first few ones. the fans of this movie were insufferable, making fun of people who were uncomfy with seeing what's basically a 7 year old have sex. also the whole thing with her discovering masturbation - why was that like one of the FIRST things she discovers??? in a completely forced way too??? you have this amazing premise, (i found the idea of implanting an infant's brain in a grown person's body so interesting, you could do so many things with it) and this is what you choose to explore?? it's sad that the director thinks that girls discover themselves and the world through their pussy.

OHMYGODYES... I was cringing the whole time at the cinema. This thing is hideous. It's a hideous movie with wonderful performances and great cinematography, but a hideous storyline and hideous altogether. Wouldn't watch it a second time. Also, I can't believe it won the Oscar for Best Costume Design, it was terrible and so on the nose. Hated it.
