  • 29-year-old Kevin B. is a Bundeswehr sergeant stationed in the Gao region of Mali, in west Africa. Gao is the most dangerous part of the country. UN peacekeeping troops and Malian government forces are frequently attacked by insurgents.
    It's a dangerous mission for the UN soldiers. On January 18, suicide bombers blew up a vehicle at a government military facility, killing dozens of people. The attack was near the camp where German troops are based.

      as a german, i respect my soldiers soo fucking much, i want to become a soldier, KSK fighter, GSG 9 or SEK fighter to help my own country to fight terrorism and so on. But I'm not sure if i am able to become such a fighter because I have a "Rot-Grün-Schwäche", Red-Green-Weakness, that is not so good but we'll see!

      @@lars_ger0716 Germany produces some of the best small arms in the world, and the best main battle tanks and diesel-electric submarines in the world. However thats unrelated to the state the German armed forces are currently in. The consecutive rounds of budget cuts each year have really done a number on Germany's armed forces, to the point that only a fraction of its heavy equipment (helicopters, airplanes, armored vehicles, etc.) are in working condition, the rest of them have all been scavenged for spare parts, with no money to buy replacement spare parts and return those scavenged vehicles to working condition.
      Don't get me wrong, the militaries of many of Germany's neighbouring countries are in just as bad shape. But that just says a lot about what a sad state Western-Europe's armed forces are in, especially if you consider what they were like up untill only a couple decades ago, when they were still in the prime of their life.

    • @alberich3099
      @alberich3099 5 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      @Steven Rodriguez agreed, but there is more to it.
      1. Those Soldiers are not a fighting force in Mali, but a suport detachment for training Mali security forces.
      2. With 1 in mind, we have to acknowlage that standarts set to personal and uniform is higher than it normaly would.
      3. There is a standart in the German army which stated "weapon, kit then soldier" meaning even with a soldier looking like shit, his kit and rifle ought to be emaculate.
      4. Having served alongside US forces, general standart on kit was seemingly always higher on us than the US soliders. This is not(!) to look down on US soldiers it was just a different mindset.
      5. What we see here is not a FOB but a garison. Which is handeld quite different. I was detached to German Paras (with me beeing mearly an EOR-engineer) and our FOB was just some tents and our armoured vehicles inside a little combound. Quite similar to what the brits had in Musa Qala.
      I think the big mistake you make is to compare the German troops in Mali (solely a supportive role) to US combat troops in Iraq or Afghanistan
      But then as dudel and Freedomnine already said the amount of fighting Germans encountered during their deployment compared to the US' or UK's forces is miniscual, but the incidances German paras fought, their surrounding and themself looked quite similar to what the US and UK troops looked like.
      Different only in their basic philosophies and how they set up their FOB.

      As an American Veteran, I agree. No matter what, efforts by outside forces, even from the most powerful military in the world, cannot be near as effective as the local population policing their own. The local population can stop radicalization long before the potential radical ever picks up a weapon by combating the ideology within their own religion with words. The local population can avoid breaking local taboos far better than young foreigners as locals have intimate knowledge of their own traditions and customs. There are hundreds of other reasons why locals are much better able to combat radicals. The only thing foreign powers should do is provide the tools for the good locals to defeat the bad ones, in whatever form that takes (often things as simple as food as often the reason people join the militias is because the warlords have the food).

The German soldier has always been known for his courage, professionalism, resourcefulness, and combat ability second to none. Nothing would make me happier than to see a son of Fredrick the Great beat the shit out of some jihadi. Glad ya'll are on our side.

      Muslims make up 5-6% of the German population(Uk also 5%, US at 2% i believe) . Most of them are 3rd Generation Turks and are extremly nice. Why i dont understand their Religion what so ever I do think that they dont believe the BS that Terrorist groups preach weather its in the Quran or not is debatable(Islam in itsself is so split into different groups, despite all of them claiming to be muslims they believe quite different things) . I have multiple Muslim working colleagues and they are extremly nice people and pleasant to work with. I have visited a Mosque just to see what they do in there and it was quite nice actually i liked the design much more pleasant then the average Church tbh. Im not perticulary Religious and i prefer to judge people by their actions and sofar my impression is quite positive.
