Those who spend lacs of rupees in buying abstract paintings, which hardly anyone is able to understand, not even the buyers, perhaps, should, in fact, buy these works, instead. Do they not look beautiful in their colours, details, and also tell great stories of our scriptures, as against the chaos of an abstract painting? Have been thrice to this village, when actually, the trips were for Puri where some guests had to be taken.First time, Late Shri Jagannath Mahapatro (elder brother of Kelucharan Mohapatra, the famous Odyssi Guru), who is considered to be a doyen of the Pattachitra art-work, and finds mention in an old German book, with his photograph also being there alongside, could be met with then, when he was teaching the village-children in the art. Naturally, all the villagers, most of whom were taught the work by him, were seen to have greatest reverence for him. Sculpting also was being done in the village and it was told that for any necessary repairs required to be done, due to ravages of time, in the Konarak Temple, which is situated nearby, these sculptors would be called up! In the third visit it was realised that the Pattachitra artists were facing great difficulty in making a sale of their creations, for though, to eliminate exploitation by the middle-men, the Central Government had, indeed, started show-casing their work at Pragati Maidan in Delhi every year at a certain time, in their presence, to the foreigners and other visitors, who could offer better prices to them, not all could afford to go to Delhi, and, therefore, their lot was not improving. So, there is fear of the work gradually dwindling (- actually, this situation had appeared a few years back; the present position is not known). The Odisa and the Central Governments, or any well-meaning N.G.O. may be in a position to make the art survive.
@@sunitak3505 Art prices are negotiable. A lot of fine arts are sold for less than the asking price. Bargaining is expected at these places. Don't take a holier-than-thou attitude to hide your ignorance.
