  • They decided to come home!
Jackie and Shadow were both seen the evening of July 4 before sundown…then the fireworks show on Big Bear Lake happened…
It took 3 days, but Jackie and Shadow finally came back yesterday evening. For that time, we do not know where they went, but they were not seen on either camera nor around the lake by people who know where they usually hang out nor were any vocalizations heard from them. (Even though 3 days was hard to take, it was better than last year when they left for nearly 6 full days!)
Shadow showed up first in the early evening yesterday, hanging out on the roost tree. He was there for almost 2 hours, checking out the neighborhood, upsetting a raven or two by his presence, doing a little stretch yoga, and climbing up to his favorite sleeping spot to make sure everything was still in order. Jackie made herself known with a nearby chortle, like only Jackie can do…but she stayed well-hidden until later.
Shortly before sundown, Jackie finally showed herself as she and Shadow joined each other on their favorite perch tree, the Stick Depot Snag. They each moved, branch by branch, closer to each other on the tree until they were beak-to-beak. Apparently, they needed to have a little private conservation time. And after this sweet late-evening togetherness, they both took their place, side-by-side, on the sleeping branch of their favorite roost tree for the night.
Early this morning found Jackie and Shadow still together on their roost tree branch as they sang a beautiful chortling duet to welcome the morning and announce that they were glad to be home.
Yes, we, like many of you are very concerned about the impact that fireworks, especially in the middle of a National Forest, have on the surrounding wildlife and environment. Yes, we felt the worry when Jackie and Shadow chose to be away from their home territory for an extended period. And yes, we are very, very happy to see that they decided to return home!
For any of you who might be interested, we are gathering information on the intense and detrimental impact that fireworks have on wildlife, on the lake, on the environment in general and even on domestic animals and humans. If any of you have references to studies about any of this, please share them with us at fobbvinfo@gmail.com. Thank you!
And for today, let’s all celebrate that Jackie and Shadow are back home!

I love watching Jackie & Shadow over 4years now from Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 Such a pleasure to see them & hear the calls.❤
~ I know your Independence Day is important; but can't understand why fireworks would even be allowed near this special forest & area of natural beauty.
Some years they disappear for longer, so this is not part of their natural vacation cycle > it's people being selfish, creating so much racket & fright that these Eagles ( your Natonal bird) must leave their home in shock.
Glad they home & happy to see them anytime. Thanks FOBBV 🙂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Oh my gosh, we always hear about how much fireworks affect our pets but I have never really thought about animals in the wild. Where would they go since it seems that the fireworks are everywhere? Poor things. I’m glad they’re back home safe.

I live in the Bay Area. None of these morons can fly an American Flag on July 4th, but they ALL can stay up until 3am firing off those big size fireworks. I see that in Lake Tahoe they left tons of trash on the lake and shore.

I am in agreement with both comments here cause I don’t think too that there is any need to celebrate with things that can and have harmed people who carelessly have used fireworks in the wrong way or by being drunk doing them too. God bless the both of you. There are many ways to celebrate our Country’s freedom in many different ways. Sue M. Florida❤️🥰🫶🏻🙏👏🏻👏🏻🦅🦅🎉🥳😎❌⭕️❌⭕️

I often think there may be better ways to celebrate the 4th (and other notable events) without fireworks. Each year starting on the 4th my neighborhood is devoid of wildlife for 4 or 5 days. As an avid bird watcher and wildlife lover it always saddens me. For birds and other wildlife the noise and exploding fire must seem like war zone for them. So glad Jackie and Shadow are back home and safe.

Glad to see them back! 🦅🦅I love following Jackie and Shadow and have a special attachment to this area, as I was married in Big Bear 31 years ago. ♥It's such a beautiful area, but my question is why have fireworks? Is it a draw for tourists and visitors? So, as usual, it comes down to money. I'm now living in rural Colorado, and there's no containing the mayhem. My neighbors buy commercial grade fireworks and seem in competition as to who can be the loudest. My town sounds like a war zone on the 4th, but we still have people popping stuff off at all hours of the night. City Council doesn't seem interested in doing anything. My animals suffer, as do so many I know, but I can't imagine how the wildlife fare. I wish they were banned. There's got to be a better way to celebrate than blowing stuff up with total disrespect for other living beings.

Shocked that fireworks are permitted in any national park. In addition to the sounds and flashes disrupting the animals' habitat, the risk of fire makes the activity Insane. Even SeaWorld stopped their fireworks off the ocean due to sonar disturbances to the surrounding marine life.

They need to stop fireworks in Big Bear, period. We are witnessing in real time the negative impact that humans have on wildlife and the environment, this should sound the alarm that our priorities should be on preservation of this area instead of entertainment at the expense of destroying natural habitats. We can correct this.

I agree with others, Big Bear Lake hardly seems like a place for fireworks. They should consider drone shows instead... I happened to see a drone show in person, was wonderful, included images/messages relating to the event, the area, intermixed with artsy "fireworky" patterns.

What an awesome sight to have J&S back home once again.🥰🎉❤️🦅🦅. I just missed this pair so much and I was having withdrawal from no sticks from Shadow😁❤️🦅. I really do hope that they are back to stay from their vacation away.❤️🙏🦅🦅. It was sad looking at an empty nest with even no short visits. I have been worrying about all Eagles and birds and even the wild animals too out in our whole country with the fireworks cause they do stay far away from the nest or even the area they are comfortable in. We have an Eagles nest here in Clearwater, Florida at a baseball field where there has been an Eagles nest up on a cell phone tower and the young are either not ready to fly or are already flying and the fireworks were to be cancelled for the 4th but just last night they did fireworks and it worried me about the Eaglets.🙏❤️🦅🦅 But, all I could do was pray for them. Of course there is no updates since the fireworks and that concerns me. Anyway, God bless J&S and hope they are home for good now. Thanks for the awesome video. It makes me smile. Hugs love and blessings always. Sue M. Clearwater, Florida ❤️🥰👏🏻👏🏻🙏🦅🦅🫶🏻😘🥳🎉😎❌⭕️❌⭕️

They do stay in Big Bear year round! In the summer they are seen around the lake (as reported by locals who are always on the look-out), but we don't see them often at the nest or in their favorite snag trees. Since Cam 2 was upgraded last fall, we are able to see more of their habitat and favorite snags that we didn't get to see in the past.

I used to enjoy fireworks on the fourth, but in recent years it dawned on me the impact they must have on wildlife (birds in particular). Reading your description confirmed my suspicions, and saddened me. In Maine, fireworks are legal. We hear ghem throughout the summer. I wish in life that people would consider how their behaviors impact this planet. We are a part of a much greater system. Hugs to Jackie and Shadow, and apologies to them for our poor decisions.

Agree, and some people don't care. It's sad how people are messing up nature these days with pollution, trash, noise...Just very sad. I was looking at a Facebook post that showed hundreds of birds dead because of fireworks. I believe they got so scared and stressed they started bumping into things trying to get away. But some people in the comments were saying "Well I can sleep through fireworks just fine. Why should anyone care about this?" So sad some people think like that. Nature is worth protecting. Just because they can sleep through fireworks doesn't mean it's the same for all these poor birds and animals so stressed out. I wish people would think about how it's affecting nature. I used to love fireworks and get excited over it, but now that I know the horrible affects it has on animals, I don't get excited like I used to over these shows knowing so many animals and birds are stressed out, struggling, dying. 💔
