Just about a month before he passed away. He was to young to leave us. But thankfully we have some of the greatest music ever recorded.

Miles told Joe that this was his favourite part of the concert. Two or three months later he was gone.

@@jazzpopular819 My pleasure ; the comment is from Erdzeit -probably one of the best documentaries on Joe Zawinul.
Miles, Joe and Wayne set the bar; each in their own way. In your clip I love how Richard is so "on", all of them carried by the inimitable Al Foster.

Miles Davis - “In A Silent Way”
    by BRIAN ZIMMERMAN
When Miles Davis released the album In a Silent Way in the summer of 1969, it represented a tectonic shift in the trumpeter’s artistry, aligning him with the growing legion of disrupters in the fusion movement and ushering in an era of funk-rock experimentation that critics would later dub his “Electric Period.”

It's interesting how everyone in the band, probably Herbie Hancock more than anyone become absolute success in fussion and funk only for Miles to experience one of this most depressive and junkie periods

The reason Miles "found" Joe was due to another musician, I can't think of his name, stop taking band members to meet Miles as Miles would "poach" them and brought Joe Zawinul.
And from that came, beside this beautiful collaboration, Weather Report

Miles met Joe Zawinul when another musician, I can't remember his name, stopped bringing musicians to meet Miles, as Miles would "poach" the players.
So he brought Joe Zawinul rather than his keyboard player.
Then came "In a Silent Way" and later Weather Report with Wayne Shorter.

It is in a silent way and Joe played on with Miles numerous times sometimes at the displeasure of Cannonball who had him on his band and Miles kept taking him away. Joe and Wayne Shorter were critical to Miles move to fusion and electric and the seminal bitches brew

I am a 70s funk guy and Joe Zawinul Herbie Hancock etc took a huge inspiration particularly from this album to give the world what was funk and jazz fussion
