Nothing better than a wet market! Fresh, fresh, fresh! Rice, yum... You must touch, smell, color, size, and know how you're going to use it. When I'm at my farm in NC, I'll pick starting at 4am! Best time for the freshness and it last longer. Customer satisfaction! I get the best in China so, I sell similar quality in America... :-) Buy from a local farmer to get your veggies stateside!
I came to Nanning to attend a university from other area of Guangxi province in 2001, have been living in this city for almost 19 years. The first thing I would do after clicking Gweilo60’ videos is that scrolling down to find your comments. I can relate to some of your experience in Nanning in the past 10-20 years. I was planning to go to NC to study for my doctorate in the fall. However, I have to defer my admission to spring because of Covid and the travel restrictions. Nanning is a great city to live and life here is beginning to return to normal, as you can see from Gweilo60’ videos.

It's great to walk around, get exercise and check everything out and price shop rather than only clicking online for the best deals (that's good too). Something about getting back to our roots is satisfying. The farmers market in St Jacobs, Ontario is great to visit for that feel back home also.

I use extra precaution going to the fish market and the meat section in the Southeast asian countries because paper money and coins are held by lots of people. Some sellers hand me the change that got wet with meat blood. Sometimes paper money and coins smell funny because they are contaminated by fishy smell. It should be understood that in a wet market, you cannot expect people to have their hands clean all the time. With the introduction of cashless payments, it helps break transmission of potential pathogens.

I love fresh markets in China, spoiled with choices. I remember in the late 60's the meat and fish was rationed. Each person got coupons for a definite amount of each per month. When you went to the market there was little to choose from, just got whatever you were given, basically. Again, life in China has made a big leap forward.
When I was in Vancouver, C$20 would not buy much food, even in Canadian Superstore. Great story! May need to change "wet market" to "farmers' market" though.
What the market lady called "squash" is bitter melon. If you cook it right, you can get the tangy flavor without most of the bitterness. We can buy it here in the South Asian markets.
I miss this place, the wet market is where we go when we are in Nanning. it is just below my mother in law's home. A quick 2 minutes from our apartment. YOu are right I love the fresh markets there, the fruit is great. there are a few places were we get our fresh bread/buns in the morning.
i'm from california and i go to china in winter, yes, the meat prices are comparable to na but better value because the quality is better, fresher AND zero processing, no chemicals. the wet markets are much better than the super markets for sure.
This is a total shock to me. In US West Coast we have 99 Ranch, and on the East Coast we have Hong Kong Market. They are setup about the same way. But an apple or orange cost about $1 USD.

Prices in ontario are quite affordable to be honest though due to the pandemic grocery has got a bit more expensive. The meat is cheaper than that in china. However I am pretty sure china has real free range meat products.
I like farmers markets in America. They are basically like Chinese wet markets but no raw meat. They also have lots of prepared items like jams, honeys, etc. The touching raw meat is the only thing I find off-putting about Chinese wet markets.
@@winterwolf1 Actually I worked as a butcher for a bit. We used a special band-saw to slice cuts with bone, a couple of grinders for mincing meat, and a deli slicer. Everything else was done with knives. Sadly no robots yet :(

Hi Kirk. How about doing a piece on cost of living. Cost to have a phone, running service plan, cost to pay for internet, cost of rent, property tax if owning house or condo. Vehicle cost insurance, parking cost and if any additional monies needed. Can might do a cost of being a TH-camr (?), camera and additional equipment and if you would need a broadband service and cost of VPN.

Yeah I love the big wet markets in HK you can lose yourself for hours in utter fascination and yes many things you have no idea what they are - especially the sea food. I always love to tell people, in my best Baldrick style "I have eaten things, that have no name.... in our language...."
They don't use cash. Money is all in their wallets. They only bother with handling merchandise. They are very advanced in being cashless with other things else pretty much the same as in Thai wet markets.
For China to get rid of wet market is fine. it is just a matter of changing the way of life. However getting rid of wet market in south east asia is essentially impossible. It is not just as simple as building a supermaket. You will need to establish a modern logistic system, supply chain, sophisticated standard food processing factories. To do this, you will need to put massive investment in infrastructure, high way, truck industry. You don't want your food to be stinky when they arrive in the local supermarket. It is a total revolution.

The price of pork is still not so good now, and it has influenced the production of Luosifen, which is my favorite rice noodle dish! And because of that, Luosifen were out of stock for a while in Australia! Lol

Can u still buy Real Tangerines cause the last time i eaten some was 2008 in Shenzhen last couple of times i went to China in Shenyang it was non only some bloody clementines n satsumas, went to the market in 2008 n once I just smelled them I knew this Is the real thing, told Wen to buy some she got half a Kilo I thought what buy more woman she got a Kilo by the time we walked home it was about 2 left she couldn't believe it even after I told her i used to clime on a tree n eat at least half kilo a time they where the Best I had since the 50s even when we moved to town in about 53 when every tme father gave me a penny to buy ice cream i used to buy from the Bazaar it was mainly Turkish people selling fruit n veg there I used to buy 1 OKA its about a kilo n a quarter for a penny of TOP quality tomatoes in China the Best fruit I had was Tangerines the worse grapes n the best veg was Real woodland mushrooms, n of course their fruit juices are the Best by a long way stay safe n say happy mate China is a good country

Can u still buy Real Tangerines cause the last time i eaten some was 2008 in Shenzhen last couple of times i went to China in Shenyang it was non only some bloody clementines n satsumas, went to the market in 2008 n once I just smelled them I knew this Is the real thing, told Wen to buy some she got half a Kilo I thought what buy more woman she got a Kilo by the time we walked home it was about 2 left she couldn't believe it even after I told her i used to clime on a tree n eat at least half kilo a time they where the Best I had since the 50s even when we moved to town in about 53 when every tme father gave me a penny to buy ice cream i used to buy from the Bazaar it was mainly Turkish people selling fruit n veg there I used to buy 1 OKA its about a kilo n a quarter for a penny of TOP quality tomatoes in China the Best fruit I had was Tangerines the worse grapes n the best veg was Real woodland mushrooms, n of course their fruit juices are the Best by a long way stay safe n say happy mate China is a good country
