#5. there is a technique we use in musky fishing that i think will be helpful for cat anglers. when the head of the fish goes in the net, hit the line release on the reel and they fall into the bag. especially effective when you are netting your own fish.
I wish we had large catfish here in central Texas.. If we do well I don’t know where they’re at haha.. We have tried every type of bait.. The down side is we don’t have access to a boat rarely… Maybe that’s the problem haha
On #3, you put “lose” instead of “loose” 😊. And I think drag usage has to be the number 1 issue people have. I hear about so many people that lock their drags down and never play a fish out. That’s how line breaks and hooks pop loose. You can fight a fish so hard that you tear the hook through the fish’s mouth.
Very good tips! I almost lost a big blue cat and a rod off my kayak last week. He decided to start rolling when i got him on the deck. Got my heart pumping 😂
Love the content brother, keep it up. Been watching for years now, by far my favorite channel to watch. Just told the girlfriend I gotta find you to go fishing haha. Good job man keep it going and FISH ON!!!
Prolonged exposure to sunlight (UV rays) will also reduce line strength drastically. My gear comes out of the truck when I get home, or out of the boat if it is parked outside. Also destructive to fishing rods over time.
Idk if it's my rod or my reel but something somewhere is fraying my line pretty bad and causing it to snap. I switched over to my other rod that has a missing eye protector thing and it works just fine. I haven't noticed any line damage on that one. The area I've been fishing just has a bunch of weeds, I have to kinda guide the fish into a small opening where I can get em up onto the bank.
As always great tips for anglers brother 👍 we all hate losing a fish 😅 but happens 🤷 . I quit using braided line because them flatheads pull me into rocks . So many don't moisten their lines . Which can cause frays on the knots 🪢 and bam hook breaks off . I barely use my net . Always there but barely use it I just grab them by hand mostly . Good video brother 👍
If you start out ultra lite fishing and use 2lb line and learn to bring big fish in on 2lb line with drastically help you in the future with keeping big fish on big tackle.
My dad lost a giant today this morning. I told him to loosen his drag that way, it doesn't snap the line, but he didn't loosen it, and it snapped off. But he learned that when I tell him to loosen his drag, he now knows!
From experience - don’t use a fishing leader with a snap swivel for attaching the hook - the snap swivel can/will break with a big fish. It’s best to attach the hook directly to the line/leader and avoid the snap swivel altogether.
I've heard broke 50 pounds test till I could scream that's what everyone says up here where I'm from in n.c. there's big flatheads here but nothing that can do that on a regular basis. I've yet to have my line broke pulled hooks to many to count even on small fish
Well thanks for the info but it would've been useful a couple days ago when I had a massive pike on my line. But I guess it's not all that bad because yesterday I caught a 5 pound 10 ounce largemouth bass. It broke my new pole lol.
I use mono line 100 percent of the time. Its just my preference. I like berkley trilene big game in at least 20lb test because it's abrasion resistant strong and cheap. For what you get I like high visible line like orange or the solar collector color. Now for my leader line i use 50 lb test zebco omni flex because its real cheap and it's strong and makes great leader material. My 2 favorite knots to tie on my line the Palomar or snell knot. Because thry are strong and easy to tie .one of the rods I use is the Berkeley trilene big game rods because they are strong and cheap. And if I'm by myself and it's a big fish I would use a lip grip or my bare hands to land it but my pb is only 10 lbs and since I use punch bait mostly that's probably why. And that's my 2 cents
I have broke line even broken hooks it happens its had knots come undone it and my grandpa and dad said if you aren't willing to lose some gear you aren't ready to fish
Lost a monster just a couple of weeks ago to a poorly tied not. That seldom happens to me. It only takes a couple of times and you get very serious about testing your knots. Guess I didn't test that one well. I was just about to quit for the morning, still had a hand sized blue gill in my bucket I was gonna use for cut bait, but since I had several lines in the water I just decided to hook him whole and live. Had my pole in a PVC rod holder on the bank that I always pound so deeply in the sand it can't be uprooted. The rod was on one of my rigs I use for big bull redfish and shark. Forgot to set my clicker and I thought that pole was going to snap it was bent over so far when he grabbed it. Anyway, I had to horse it in a little since I was fishing near a fallen tree and didn't wanna lose it in a tree. Nothing more disgusting than losing a fish and see that your knot failed!
This is how I found dieter melhorn and many other channels. Lost a massive fish literally 2 feet from the bank due to a poorly tied knot. Now I've really stepped up my skills and approach and I can proudly say (so far, knock on wood lol) that I haven't lost a big fish due to bad knots since, and that was over 2 years ago. Great video dieter!!!!
@@Flathead-fb5tk I salt water fish a lot. It's been years and countless 40 plus pound fish since I had a knot fail. Still sucked as badly as I remember it. 🤣
@@cryptofan6255 lol I bet it does lol. But all we can do is keep grinding and putting baits out. I don't salt water fish up here in KY but I sure love fishing for big catfish
@@Flathead-fb5tk Yeah, I'm 30 minutes from salt water fishing in Texas, and I take a few Florida trips a year. But, still love getting in on those big cats. It's so hot here that the spawn has been over for probably almost twp months now, but the spawn bite was crazy this year. I river fish for cats and it was almost ridiculous to put out two poles. Almost constant double hook ups!
I have big wisker seeker net but love to just grab my fish with my hand not a better filling when I git my hand ahold of his mouth love the fill of the sharp teeth cut my hand cat fish love

Man I don’t know how you aren’t one of the top TH-cam channels, no drama just straight to the fishing thanks for the tips
Some people like drama. I don’t think those people make good guide trip clients, or loyal fans of the channel, so I’m glad I don’t have that crowd.
That improved clinch knot is the best knot you'll ever learn in life
For me the Palomar Knot is my favorite.
Mr. Dieter you have the best tips ever. I watch you faithfully just because you teach the tips an tricks

Finally someone makes a video on this!! Glad its you sir! Thank you for what you do!!!!

Great info as always Dieter! Very entertaining while informative, like a pro! Fish on brother!
Thank you sir!
Great tips Dieter and great video.
"Work on perfecting your skill as an angler" Might be the best piece of device you have ever given

Yes, thats what makes rods shift color
So does florescent lights if you store them in a garage, or shop, place them in a area away from direct exposure to the lights
.

Guilty of a few, but a bad knot? NEVER that lol not even when I first started 😏
I just wanna point out that I was a scout and took my knots VERY serious, so when I started fishing it was second nature 😎
