As an actor myself, I must say Judi was one I admired right from an early age in Drama School. If there was any occasion where I thought I was getting too big for my boots as a 19 year old student, I’d just think “what would Judi do?” I love how grounded and humble she is. #JudiDench
Judi Dench is one of the greatest actors in the language. It's a joy to be able to hear her talk about the art and craft of acting. However, I would have thought that greater effort would have been made to capture all of the voices better without so much distortion. A lost opportunity.
Been in love with her greatness since I sat glued to our black and white TV when I was nine.I was only allowed to watch h in the kitchen glued to the chair by the wood stove. I was fine with that best chair in the house.
Love how the interviewer poured the water for Judi and she just swigged out of the bottle! Wow, didn't she drink a lot? Must have been nerves. I love this woman, thanks for posting.
graceygrumble, Judi mentioned her failing eyesight at 39:20. The interviewer must have presumed her to drink from the glass, but Judi didn't notice. Instead, she went to what she placed after fidgeting with the bothersome bottle at first. Logical actually. Judi was focused on the audience, per the usual. 😀👍
@@AidaJof Even though we see her as the epitome of poise, that does not mean she has no nerves. Yes, she is 'dench' - excellent; impressive; awesome! She gave her surname to youth speak, within the UK. Well dench! Hugh Jackman has a funny story about JD on the verge of a panic attack in the wings, before a Royal Variety performance. Look it up.
I absolutely love Dame Judy Dench she’s such a good actor of all times. she knows so much about Shakespeare and say lines from various Shakespeare plays. I would like to say that the person asking questions to her as a journalist could have done slightly better whether she was starstruck, but she was a bit fidgety and had quite got it right, but like I said she was having to interview, such a amazing woman..
Questions I would have asked: Do you find it easy to learn lines? What technique do you employ? Does the technique vary between film, TV & theatre. Having played Shakespeare many time, do you carry the scripts in your head afterwards. Lovely lady. Should have had Michael Parkinson as interviewer. The girl doing it didn't have much of a clue.
When Cambridge U was founded, the technical requirements of TV weren't contemplated in designing the auditorium where this interview took place. Maybe its shortcomings in that regard will be remedied someday, but probably not.
Dame Judy is a true treasure to the entire world. I would like to suggest to the interviewer to join a local Toastmaster's group on public speaking. Her introduction was not natural. She literally read it. The chairs were not a good choice for this situation. Clearly made both the guest and interviewer sit a bit contorted. Always a good idea to not wear a short tight dress when doing a sit down interview. I would ask the young lady interviewing to look to Princess Kate for appropriate attire. Watch how she sits and even gets out of a car for acceptability. She even flipped her hair to the other side. Just clumsy all together. She is young and can learn to be more polished and do her guests more honor with a bit of time and action put behind learning. Dame was smooth/classy/with a lovely sense of humor.
I do think that the presenter could have looked a little less bored, and indeed modified the sloppy way in which she sat in her chair and stared blankly at Dame Judi. Dame Judi herself was so animated and true...a fascinating rencontre
The poor girl is a bit gangly in a most becoming way, and the chairs were designed to envelop their occupants. Judi was able to overcome this, but the girl was not. A firm pillow in each chair would have helped a good deal. Also, the audience needed a microphone so everyone could hear their remarks.
the presenter's attention was centred the whole time on attempting to preserve her modesty. The whole time Dame Judy was in danger of being upstaged by the unprepared 'uncomfortable' presenter.Oh dear.
Does anyone know the name of the splendid Speakers Officer who introduced her and moderated the Q&A session? Very attractive young lady but her confidence and voice are exceptionally authoritative and clear. Her demeanor is also very professional with a wonderful bright and cheerful tone. She has likely gone on to a wonderful career in media and I'd like to follow up on her career choices since the Dame Judi visit.🏆
8-1-13 -- Dame Judi Dench, The Cambridge Union Society -- THIS WAS VERY ENJOYABLE TO LISTEN TO WHAT SHE HAD TO SAY :O I WATCH HER ON - "AS TIME GOES BYE" --
As Time Goes By has been shown continuously for the past 30 years on PBS here in North America and I watch it every Saturday night ... I have watched those episodes over & over again many a times but I do not get tired of them😍
and her posture. oooph. if the springs are shot in the chair, best just to sit on the edge of it. If she doesn't know how to manage the length of her skirt, well, time for a do-over, eh?
Good lord, what an awful interviewer. Shows how breathtakingly glorious Judi is that she carried that entire interview next to that interviewer sucking all energy out of the room. Bloody hell, that's the best person Cambridge had to offer?!
The audience is pretty clueless too. Dench has done the classics, David Hare plays, Sondheim, Kander & Ebb... played Elizabeth & Victoria on film... worked with an amazing array of actors and directors... and all they can ask her about is flipping Bond films.
That interviewer was more there for her own self promotion that to show any real interest in Dame Judy, the legs and everything where designed to say "look at me".She has great legs but there is a time and place for everything.
the interviewer should learn to wear appropriate attire as her short dress and open legs tend to be an unnecessary distraction, also listen to your guest when she is talking instead of looking at your notes. judi dench as everyone knows is a treasure. i think i will put a post it note over the interviewer so i cant see her and that will allow me to enjoy watching

Her voice is magical. I could listen to her all day. What a treasure she is! ❤️
Dame Judy Dench is such an inspiration, looking forward to her next film.
thank you so much , I could listen to and watch Judi Dench 24/7 and never tire of her.
You wouldn't find a nicer, more human and down to earth actor!

Very insightful and amazing answers. She kept the energy the same throughout.

Judi shared some great advice in this interview. I really enjoyed it. Thanks for uploading!
This was really informative and inspiring to listen to and watch here. Thanks for uploading this.

No, it wouldn't be nerves with her but the lights of stage and constantly talking she has to hydrate the vocal chords.

A great, and honest, lesson for students by a very accomplished lady.

Dame Judy managed to do this whole interview without telling that pretty moderator to "Sit up properly, Dear!' xx SF
"aren't you cold dear?"
I have expected that 😄
Dame Maggie Smith would, but not Dame Judi ... she is too nice to do so😍
It would be helpful if there was a mic for the folks in the audience...It's so hard to hear their questions.
She does a little Singing too, Which I must say I really enjoyed.
You can have footlights but not microphones on the audience. Is there no one who can hang some microphones from the rafters in Cambridge.
So I went through the interview and I've noticed there is Judi Dench sitting with the interviewer! I s*** you not!

@@zimnaya I think she’s self conscious. She’s in front of a large crowd and talking to an acting legend which would make anyone nervous.

Very interesting... and the moderator is fine!
DAME Judi is a fine actress 🎭🎬

Poor little interviewer almost has no clue. A British truck driver may know more about Dench.

very interesting interview if it had not been for my being distracted by the very young and lovely journalist.
Trouble is she thinks so too and that she should should be the centre of attention not the guest.

Audio is horrible. I can't even finish.
Why the dickens doesn't CUS have a roving mic for the audience? It's agony hearing the miscommunications, and disrespectful to Dame Judi.
thank you! I am going to take a break from the video. at 23.00. I want to return. can you rereel in sections of 5- 10 min.?
+Susan Leskowite Pull back the time bar actually at around 23 minutes she starts to relax.
I wonder if theatre is in a bad way due to waaay too much television and actors choosing the small screen over stage for the sake of money.
shocking interviewer however
The Rose Theatre in Kingston still exists. Not sure of its financial situation though
Moderator is one fine lady!! 🔥

I did?

Judy is wonderful as ever. Sullen girl slouching on right in black dress very ungracious and unfit for whatever ºurºpsose shes supposed to serve
Cambridge has certainly benefitted intellectually from diversity. I only wish I'd seen the snoo. 😨
not one useful brain cell between them. at least there was a decent actress present.
