Still not over the fact that I was lucky enough to see him play live not so long ago, was an amazing concert! He has such a precise, pristine, sweet tone.
Lovely strong performance by Galway early in his career. I wish I had had the brains to have appreciated this great flutist, musician and TEACHER back then. I was too interested back then in smoking, drinking, speaking French and never thinking of tomorrow. When the pupil is ready, the teacher will come.
James Galways played this live in Sydney in 1988, in a concert for world peace. I recorded it from the radio and listened to it over and over again. I have just found this tape, and am making a digital copy of it while I search youtube for more instances of this magnificent performance. Thank you for posting this.
Just so we're clear, James Galway hates the term "flautist" (a sentiment that many of us flute players share). "I am a flute player not a flautist. I don't have a flaut and I've never flauted."-James Galway I myself prefer the term flutist & so do many of my fellow flutists. :)
I have read most of the comments and have to laugh when I read comparisons between Galway and others like Pahud. When you get to their level it is simply a matter of interpretation and style. I actually enjoy listening to both Pahud and Galway, and many many others. Galway has earned the right to bring his own voice to the composers work.
At 5:48 his fingers get a bit confused 😊 Great RESPECT to James, it is wonderful because it proves that it happens and you move on 👍 Technique is just a blow!! But it’s hard to listen to this and be relaxed and really enjoy. Seems a bit Iike he’s racing against himself...
When your band directors tell you to listen to professional musicians who play your instrument, that's because you learn a lot from them & pick up on their tone quality, technique, and musicality, etc. When you've been playing for many years & have been around musicians for most of your life, you'll reach the point where, just by listening to someone play their instrument, you can immediately tell who they studied with. :)
The musicality, the pure beauty of his playing surpasses anyone out there. He is a unique and singularly talented musician. Others can have exemplary tone and technique. But Sir James Galway OWNS 20th century musicianship on any instrument . Sure there are super fast parts - bit isn't that what a piece with the description BRILLIANTE should have and yet he sings that melody through even those amazing runs. Full Name carmen fantasy Brilliante
I come from Northern Ireland and saw him in concert when I was younger. Ahh, I really didn’t appreciate it enough!! I’m older and a flautist now so I understand how amazing he is 😂
I absolutely LOVE Sir Galway and have seen him several times met and attended masterclasses with him. But as BRILLIANT as he is, this just sounds too fast for my ear. I don't think I've ever heard anyone play it at quite this tempo. Great performance though.
Carmen, la opera de Bizet, ha sido Fuentes de inspiración para virtuosos del piano, violin y esta versión en flauta me agrado su fantasía musical, como resumen d la gran obra.
I listened to this man's CD's endlessly when I was in middle & high school & still listen to them often. I made it my goal from the beginning to be THAT good some day. I'm not THAT good yet, but I hope to even scratch the surface of his awesomeness eventually. Haha! :) I will say that listening to him & to other professional flutists really helped me to get to where I am today. I'm still going strong & I'm now a semi-professional flutist. :)
I'm not just saying this stuff for the sake of saying it. I really have studied with some incredible teachers/professors (one of whom is a graduate of Eastman School of Music). I really cannot emphasize enough just how important it is to listen to other musicians who play your instrument. I truly believe that you cannot get better if you don't take the time to listen to those peoples' recordings/live performances. You really do learn by example.
Totally agree… Listen, breath, watch, understand what it takes to be able to play like that, not just in your home but to realistically play at your best on a stage publicly, dressed in uncomfortable cloths and with microphones and camera’s pointing at you. I ended with a full-time flute playing gig for 34yrs and consider James Galway and Jean Pierre Rampal pivotal to my practice method way back in the late 70’s - never met them.
i have been listen to this amazing piece of music sens years in the radio (in orchestra)at the classical channel and i never knew until just now that its composed by Bizet i thought it composed by my friend Schubert all the time , the funny things that in 2007 i attend it opera in Europe and more funny that the opera in franch and we know that Schubert composed in German language so huhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhu iam very cultured person ,lucky me :))))
@Railey0Gail I beg to differ, he's for sure sweating... that being said, who wouldn't? I cannot believe that this is more or less ten minutes of unbroken technique, and it sounds so perfect and virtuosic.
Nobody shapes music like Sir James Galway...Love Pahud also but sorry he still has a bot of catching up to accomplish what this living legend has achieved. Bravo!!!
There is no way to compare james galway with pahud I tried to enjoy the sound of pahud but I can not, james galway is yes no doubt the live personality in the flute, because it has no sound it has sound digital
On the contrary, maybe sylvieschel recognizes exactly the questionable elements of his playing. He seems to ignore the requests of the composer on things like rests, tempi, volume, and what octave was written.
ofc, he is more than great!! but my opinion (you may not agree) is that he stresses it too much - the point should not ALways be to play as fast as humanly possible - i think some of the music disappears then. how about tasting the tunes sometimes?
He is a very good flute player, no doubt about that. His tone is beautiful and very strong but I'm bothered by the fact that he seems to only care about playing as loud and fast as he can. He doesn't even bother to follow the dynamics in the piece. I prefer Pahud's performance over this one.
I agree. While he is a very talented guy, I become nauseous with that cloyingly sweet sound. He also takes some odd liberties contrary to what the composer requests.
it keeps changing keys, and there are also some parts where the key isn't specific; it's antonality in some places. The different sections of the pieces all have different key signatures!
hate to be picky cuz this guy is seriously good (in terms of technique and tone, the posture almost bothers me too) but is anyone else bothered by the really, really sharp c at 3:07? Somehow, it really really bothers me... :O

I agree with you, but I think the perfect sound and interpretation would be the mid point between Galway and Pahud. Personally I don't like the exagerated vibrato from Galway, but I like his brilliant sound. So... I think both are perfect for themselves, and when someone's trying to play for people's fun, you have to like yourself first, they do.
Many of the people mentioned here have build on a popularity for the flute hugely created and promoted by Jimmy..I don't think any other European player did as much to promote the instrument in those days..I remember hearing him in his Ber Phil days in Dublin...few or none had heard of him then....a man from the shipyards to be celebrated !

When you're James Galway, you can have whatever posture you want.
Still not over the fact that I was lucky enough to see him play live not so long ago, was an amazing concert! He has such a precise, pristine, sweet tone.
He plays like a great opera singer! The best tone ever, best technique, best interpretation. This guy is amazing. He must be a very hard worker!
He is amazing.
Such wonderful sound on every note at any tempo.
Great playing!

and such a wonderful showman!!
Powerful and beautiful as always.
please people, this is great. don't embarrass yourselves by saying otherwise.
Don't embarrass yourself with the knowledge about how and why should sound...

GENIUS at his BEST !!!
Nobody and never will be able to match this level of MUSICIANSHIP !!!!
Bravissimo forever!!!!!

Absolutely amazing!
I'm actually playing this and I'm in my sophomore year in high school... Bravo James, you're simply amazing
My goal is to be able to play this perfectly by the end of my senior year in high school.
Caroline Kirsch you there yet?
I absolutely LOVE Sir Galway and have seen him several times met and attended masterclasses with him. But as BRILLIANT as he is, this just sounds too fast for my ear. I don't think I've ever heard anyone play it at quite this tempo. Great performance though.
Not really fast, simply rushing in the wrong places
Fascinante 👏👏👏
just amazing! a life of dedication and study is what it's sounding.
An old music teacher of mine told me she drove James Galway around during a visit to Canberra to score pot and roll and smoke joints. 👍👍
Carmen, la opera de Bizet, ha sido Fuentes de inspiración para virtuosos del piano, violin y esta versión en flauta me agrado su fantasía musical, como resumen d la gran obra.
The biggest difference between Jimmy and Pahud is that Pahud is a flutist anda Jimmy is an opera singer who plays the flute.
How precisely!
This is so TRUE! And exactly what makes Sir Galway staying above many other flutists
A nice analogy, well said.
Well said
marceloflauta gold 😘
True
So fast. So clean! Fantastic
An inspiration so light and heavenly amazng😅
thank you suncheep!!!galway is simply AMAZING....
I love his version!

How u doing now dude? I been a huge galway fan since 7th grade, which was 8 yrs ago

Sehr gut !
Maestoso!!!
my god this is... superior
2 words. Dear God
I love it!!! I want to play this song, but after I've to study hard!! This flute sound perfect:) Amazing :D
So,very Good
Such a great performance, but it's amusing how he sways back and forth so much.
‘e’s playing the flute like picking cherries from a tree, beautiful : -D
@Railey0Gail I beg to differ, he's for sure sweating... that being said, who wouldn't? I cannot believe that this is more or less ten minutes of unbroken technique, and it sounds so perfect and virtuosic.
Astounding ! :D
Thanks :) I now have the music, and am doing pretty well with it!

i played this piece, i could get up to his speed. but keeping the constant beautiful sound is the hardest thing to do.
Circular breathing -- he knows how to circular breathe.
Agree lol

Is he in a hurry to somewhere after this concert?
Probably to his next concert, because he is so successful. I understand that you're not in a rush to anywhere, aren't you?
@@shoni1998 hahahaha awesome
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
He's not my favorite flutist but I love how he interprets Carmen
Wow! Sounds like Paganini on the flute :-) Always thought that this sort of pyrotechnics were reserved for the violin.
How in the world can he play so fast when he's got his left pinky hanging below the key?????
он гениален
This is Galway's own arrangement of Fantasie Brillante. I'm playing it for Solo Festival on March 1st!
He's unbelievably amazing.
This is F. Borne's arrangement called "Fantaisie Brilliante Sur Carmen"
יא גבר
galway the vibrato king. this is not offensive, but no matter the piece or the style, he always uses vibrato!!!
He has a very strong tone in this piece. Brillant technique, but the intensity of the tone is maybe a bit too strong
On the contrary, maybe sylvieschel recognizes exactly the questionable elements of his playing. He seems to ignore the requests of the composer on things like rests, tempi, volume, and what octave was written.
Do listen to the version of some cute blonde girl, goes by the channel name artskatalog. It is splendid as well.
ofc, he is more than great!! but my opinion (you may not agree) is that he stresses it too much - the point should not ALways be to play as fast as humanly possible - i think some of the music disappears then. how about tasting the tunes sometimes?
@moondust99999 Awesome! :)

Pahud has not such a beautiful tone to compare the tone has Galway! I don`t think that Pahud is close and near Galway
Honestly I rather Pahud's as well because he might not have as great of tone as Galway but he does make it sound more lyrical
"As loudly and as fast as he does" ? I think that speaks of incredible talent. He is, however not my favorite flutist.
Jim Millen yeahhh j valway is a boss
You must be joking.
There is no depth in galways tone....
No body...
Due to the fact that he turns the flute way to much in
An upgraded piper, nothing more.
James ! Can you be a dear and pass me that gun?? I need to put it in my mouth now ; / ..... In all seriousness, amazing !
Can someone with the music tell me which key(s) this piece is in please? :)
It's in K# minor at first, then modulates to Qb major towards the end.
@@lucpraslan thanks :)))
cause u maybe dont recognize some elements of his playing....

I agree. While he is a very talented guy, I become nauseous with that cloyingly sweet sound. He also takes some odd liberties contrary to what the composer requests.
Yeah! Who needs oxygen?!
BTW He knows how to do circular breathing.
Breathe big and often 👏
Galway looks like Bizet lol. Just google Bizet and see it.
random asian guy in the corner
it keeps changing keys, and there are also some parts where the key isn't specific; it's antonality in some places. The different sections of the pieces all have different key signatures!
his fingers are ridiculous!!!
Definitely faster and louder than Pahud... but not more beautiful.
I prefer Flutist myself. I play a flute not a flaut
hate to be picky cuz this guy is seriously good (in terms of technique and tone, the posture almost bothers me too) but is anyone else bothered by the really, really sharp c at 3:07?
Somehow, it really really bothers me... :O
Veola Sun yep extremely noticeable
Well he is human, notes get sharp sometimes, I still think this is a brilliant performance! :)
even though i am really impressed by the way he plays this piece (tecnique omg!) i am really bothered by his posture...
Galway is VERY good but not VERY GOOD or even very very good. ;)
