It's terrific to have this album available for people who weren't around to by it in '72, as I was. People should note here the stereo version of "Redemption Song" without the over-active horns added in England to make the song more accessible to non-Jamaican tastes. Without the horns you have a tougher, uncompromised Jamaican sound. "It Was Written Down" harkens back to the Beverley's Records period when the Maytals recorded "Monkey Man," "Pressure Drop," and their other greatest releases. The band was in a transition period when "Slatyam Stoot" was recorded, and IMHO their later material was too compromised for the sake of the foreign markets. "Coolie Baby" is a great, rare Maytals side. I wish I could get a "version" of it, dub or straight. It's listed here, understandably, as "Collie Baby," but the title does not refer to ganja. In Jamaican parlance, if I am not mistaken, a "Coolie" is a Jamaican of East Indian ethnicity. Toots is complaining about his relationship with an Asian-Jamaican girl. Would anybody care to correct me? "Coolie" is considered, by many, to be a racially insensitive term. Maybe that's why this song can seemingly only be found on this one album.
I'm so glad I got to see this legend perform live! He was incredible! There is no other like him that walked the face of this planet. I'm saddened to learn that he passed on Friday. Brother Toots, your legacy & music lives forever in our hearts! Rest in power!
His live performance was at the true image of his music, very generousband warm. I saw him once, he and the band played 2 hours and half. Yes! he could get the title to be a legend. Thank you very much toots
