Brilliant! He actually makes non-dialogue lines sound natural, and expresses the changes of thought with great flow. This whole bit is contemplation and imagination. Romeo might be a young dude, but his character is super deep feeling, which is why so many of the other characters tease him for it. He's not supposed to be the average teenage dude that so many actors portray him to be. Thanks to this actor for giving this speech such a poetic gravitas!
Its a bit disheartening seeing other aspiring actors comment such negative things about his portrayal of Romeo I like the simplistic soft nature to it (also first time I've seen a non caucasin Romeo) I thought he done a good job
I love when Shakespeare is captured well on film, he’s incredible at using volume and nuanced glances to make this scene between Romeo and audience an even more private moment. I love his mixture of meter and earnestness, it’s far better than seeing it projected at you from a stage; much more intimate ^.^
This is good. It actually sounds like he is talking to himself and not performing for an audience like some people. I don't think I need to mention any names but I think some of us know exactly what I mean.
After a few years, I have checked this thread under another account and WOW!!!! Years later Romeo & Juliet is so relevant because at the end of the day, after almost 500 years, it is the story of a couple just wanting to be together despite class and perception (depending on the era that could be social standing, race, or origin of birth), or sexuality (can you imagine if Romeo & Juliet had been Romeo and Julio???). And yet, at the end of the day, this guy is above race, gender, sociality, or sexuality. He is in love and that is all that matters!!!
Oh Romeo, Romeo! Wherefore art thou Romeo! Deny thy father and refuse thy name. Or if thou wilt not. Be but sworn my love and I'll no longer be a Capulet! Tis thy name that is thine enemy. Thou art thyself though not a Montague. What is Montague? Tis it no hand, nor arm nor face, nor any other part belonging to a man! Oh be some other name! What's in a name? That which we call a rose, by any other name would smell as sweet. For Romeo would, would he not Romeo called, retain that dear perfection which he owns without that! Oh Romeo doth thy name, and for that name do thee take all myself!
I did a bastardised version of the monologue to my class that was mostly improvised even though I knew the full monologue. I claimed it was "avant-garde" and my teacher was all good. It was amazing and terrible.
It's kind of sad that in real life someone probably would have called the cops on him by now (because he's a hooded guy watching a house at night, not because of his skin colour you racists :P). Being a romantic isn't as easy as it looks
Toshley I’ve dated guys before and they are not as romantic as this guy, if any guy black or white dose something like this I’ll get a boyfriend in two seconds, but it’s all in my head
But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief That thou, her maid, art far more fair than she. It is my lady. O, it is my love! O, that she knew she were! She speaks, yet she says nothing. What of that? Her eye discourses; I will answer it. I am too bold. ’Tis not to me she speaks. Two of the fairest stars in all the heaven, Having some business, do entreat her eyes To twinkle in their spheres till they return. What if her eyes were there, they in her head? The brightness of her cheek would shame those stars As daylight doth a lamp; her eye in heaven Would through the airy region stream so bright That birds would sing and think it were not night. See how she leans her cheek upon her hand. O, that I were a glove upon that hand, That I might touch that cheek!

Zaki Clarke exactly!
It's four years on and all the comments at the top of the section are extremely positive. Truth wins in the end.
I really liked this, is it not from a real version of the movie? That's disappointing
We all have Romeo in us, but Romeo is not the exact same within everyone!
Where are the credits? Who is this fine actor?
Masterpiece, writing, acting, wardrobe, camera, and lighting. Even the location is perfect. Well done.
It feels so honest. Thank you.😊
As an actor, I appreciate good acting. This was outstanding. I thought it was very convincing and believable.
thought it was bad
More than excellent!
The best version I've heard of this speech in a long time! Nice to see Ashley Walters in a somewhat different role too, and he plays it SO well!

I wish there was a full production of this! He's a wonderful Romeo!
I came to the comments to find out where I could watch "this movie" so now I'm sad too 😢
It's great seeing modern takes on Shakespeare, it really shows how Shakespeare's plays transcend time.
The propeller group do a really good stage version of Henry V it did I'm not sure if they still do. But check them out anyhu.
Wow, he delivers that last line so soulfully, so powerfully. I've never heard it said quite that way before.
Ashley Walters from the show Top Boy... I love him! Great Actor
This is so amazing!!! He has a lot of emotion in his voice that really adds something. Great job to the actors❤️
Im watching this for online school and there are people here watching it for fun loool 😭😭😭😭😭
Same!
yessir online school nearly done tho :)
Me too pff
That's me aswell

My favorite gateway to showing students Shakespeare in common visuals today, and they match him so quickly. An amazing performance.
Wow! He was wonderful! Young, soft spoken, handsome. I would watch this all the way through. I thought it very refreshing 😌
I loved his perfomance! He is just amazing!
Definitely the best version I’ve ever seen of this! Best acting!
I admire actors that remember Skakespeare's lines so well . This was a modern version and that is fine as the Bard would have recognised it .
This was a beautiful portrayal . I felt every word
I was not loving the beginning of this but I really enjoyed this performance from "Be not her maid" onward, so understated and organic.
This is sensual and introspective and beautifully lit. I loved it!
They should have made this a movie
i had to do a monologue recently and this video helped lots so thank you

Excellent performance, natural, pure and an incredible versatile actor Ashley is indeed! I’m currently learning these lines myself 🤦♀️ #challenging
I’ve been searching TH-cam for this scene. This is the best I’ve seen. Thanks for posting.
Outstanding! Wishing you continued opportunities!

Yeah, film allows for a much more intimate performance and it's nice to see an actor take full advantage of the opportunity.
Powerful performance!
Truly a great Romeo
:D
Extremely disappointed to learn this is not part of a full-length adaptation, Walters is fantastic!
Wow he's amazing
What a splendid performance
Ageless universal Romeo s love brought to life
Forget Leonard Whiting... forget DiCaprio.... THIS dude right here is my absolute most all-time favorite Romeo EVER!!!!!!
I agree! This performance makes me weak in the knees!
Omg if he were ever to say that to me, I do believe I would die, my heart would stop, and I would die.
NallaDiana Jacobs lol
ChuChu353 Yes Ashley Walters I love his acting skills.

Amazing. Simply amazing.
Best portrayal of Romeo Iv seen

I watched this about 4 times in a row. I love his accent.
...........................speechless
I absolutely love this!!!
Wow just amazing!! Much luck with the new TV drama Ashley.
The best version I've ever seen! Is this a movie?
Sadly, no, just this scene. Honestly, I'd go see a R&J with Walters as the lead TWICE.
😭Its so beautiful!!!
I need to act and memorize this. Saved my grade.
Awesome!
I have to learn this shit for school
i love your performance. absolutely beautiful. your voice is filled with emotion and i love your facial expressions. amazing.
WOW!!! WHERE'S THE REST?!
Wonderful.
I wish there was more
Amazing acting 😍
AWESOME..................................................................................
Great example of a monologue - Act II, Scene ii.
I love this.
"I've got 21 seconds to woo" 😂
He is brilliant - love this performance 💎
Nailed it.
he wants to clap those cheeks 2:24
Same bro
AMAZING !!!
This wouldn't read on stage though. Screen acting and acting for stage are very different. But I agree, this is great.
Yes, it is really great. No need to compare it to (or even consider for a second) a stage environment.
Love!!!
Bravo!
Loved it
Brilliant!
Juliet where is my food bruv?
where can I get this entire version?
There's no full version with him, he just did this scene as a part of a challenge.
I’m just watching Top Boy and knew I recognised my mans!!! Wah Gwaan g
Beautiful!
NO!!! I want more!!!!
Who else was here from there english teacher Mrs Dough Glass or from a English teacher?
Personally, I think this is a brilliant take.
One of the best performances I've seen, even though it is obviously a soliloquy.
i think i just fell in love.
i agree hes very handsome!

DiCaprio couldn't deliver Shakespeare if he had a silver platter. This dude is the real deal!!!
Who’s here in lockdown 2020
I think this is a modernized version of the story.
Top boy
He is fine as hell 🔥
What light through yonder window breaks meaning
@rompzor I see what you mean, but it might be because she is still a dream to him? He doesn't really see their relationship as a reality yet?
It’s Dushaeen😮.
*BBC*... they knew what they were doing
Then ask what light through yonder pose breaks ?
He looks like Tyrese XD
nope, he looks like Will Smith or Lebron
But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the East, and Juliet is the sun.
