These are tough to watch because my dad would take us kids to sf for a day trip on his days off from work. He was a longshoreman in Stockton CA for 36 years and worked many of the Ports in CA with his buddies. He'd show us the Port of SF and then we'd drive around town and see the sights - De Young museums and Park was one of them - and then we would go eat! The years were the late 1960's when we ventured out. I miss you daddy. 😿

San Francisco: before Vietnam, before the hippies, before Milk was murdered, before Jim Jones, before Dirty Harry. Looks so nice back then. This is obviously the early 60's, judging by the clothes and the cars; it even has more of a 1950's vibe. I was there as a little boy in '66 and '67, oblivious of much that was going on then (we lived in Sunnyvale and would take the train in). Then my daughter attended SFSU (what a sad place that is) beginning in 2001. Was just there with the wife on a cruise last year for a day. Love the city, the most beautiful city in California, but it was certainly a nicer place to live back when this video was made.

Another great vintage footage source of SF is, speaking of movies, Bullitt, not even counting the iconic car chase scene.

@@barath4545 lol This car chase scene was so realistic that I flew off my end seat at the theater when McQueen made a hard left on one of the streets of SF. I think I was a little bit engrossed in the movie. Friends sitting next to me laughed so hard and years later never let me forget that embarrassing moment! 😂😂

This is probably 1963 or so. I was born in San Francisco and was 13 that year, in 8th grade at A.P. Giannini Junior High School. We lived on 44th Avenue. It was a good time, though far from perfect. There were indeed homeless people, then called winos, and the streets were not perfectly clean. Those old cars made big oil slicks when parked on the street. My parents got divorced a few years later, after a lot of conflict and severe money problems. And so on. I loved the hippy era, though I was never one myself. That's when things got interesting for me.

Live in Brisbane Australia, people say Brisbane reminds them of San Fran. We have a lot of hills also. The hills in the city cbd are not quite as steep as these streets but some steep ones and in the surrounding suburbs for sure. Some of my, now gone to heaven rellies, lived in houses, where you had a very small footpath, with the front door of the home on the footpath, the rest of the house block fell away, never usable and the back of the home was held up on 30ft poles. Great views though!

This is like San Francisco in a alternate universe. Everyone is dressed well, no homeless on the streets, everything seems to be clean. Having visited San Francisco for work this summer certainly not like that any longer. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. Obviously what they are doing in San Francisco today is not working, maybe they should try something else....

THIS is the San Francisco I remember. When I was growing up we would go there at least once a month from where we lived in Santa Clara. Fisherman's Wharf, The Playland, Market St.,The Japanese Gardens, The Zoo. There were no streets filled with the homeless. Women dressed with furs and dressed with style and class. Not like today. Once in a while, you'd see the Hari Krishna. The streets almost everywhere were cleaner. I can't believe how awful the city has become. It's really sad for such a city to decay the way it had.

Our cities appear increasingly run-down every decade or so and SF is not an exception. Just compare footage from the 1950s to today. Back then, everything was clean, vibrant, and well-organized. By the 1960s, signs of decline were already evident. Fast forward to the 1970s, and the deterioration is palpable. Poor urban planning only exacerbated the issue, leading to the creation of dead zones, especially downtown. Even in cities like San Francisco, while there are pockets of beauty, the majority of housing stock is aging and dilapidated, yet demanding exorbitant prices. Essentially, the overall quality of life has declined since the 1950s, with the exception of advancements in healthcare.

If you keep to the main tourist spots & avoid the Tenderloin district you'll be fine. The Ferry Building & all the eateries look to be busy & doing REALLY well. The BART trains ridership numbers are coming back after Covid & the new fare gates will stop the fare evaders. But this is a work in progress with only a few stations having the new gates.

I understand that there will be no video of Tartaria, European and Asian Russia, because these states existed before 1850. But at least the Russian empire, in theory, could be seen.... But there are few such videos, if any at all.... Strange.
