  • Sideshow participants sent different fireworks 30 feet into the sky on the Bay Bridge. Passengers can be seen hanging out of car windows, as their cars revved their engines and spun dangerously close to onlookers.
Many of them appeared unfazed and were recording the chaos for social media. There are no immediate reports of injuries or arrests.

Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 3 into law, which permits the suspension of driver's licenses for up to six months for those caught participating in these events. This law will take effect in *July 2025* and aims to curb the dangerous activities often associated with sideshows, such as blocking traffic and performing stunts like burnouts and donuts. Key provisions of AB 3 include:
License Suspension: The law allows for the suspension of driver's licenses for up to six months for individuals caught participating in sideshows or street racing. This measure aims to deter potential offenders by threatening a substantial and impactful penalty
Expanded Enforcement Areas: The bill also broadens the scope of prohibited locations for sideshows, including parking lots and other off-street locations, to prevent these events from taking place in areas that could pose significant risks to public safety
California Assembly Bill 3 (AB 3) was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom on October 8, 2021. There are a few potential reasons for this delayed implementation:
Administrative Preparation: The delay allows time for the necessary administrative and logistical preparations. This includes updating law enforcement protocols, training officers, and ensuring that the legal and administrative systems are ready to handle the new penalties and enforcement measures.
Public Awareness and Compliance: A longer lead time provides an opportunity to increase public awareness about the new law. This can help ensure that drivers are well-informed about the consequences of participating in sideshows and street racing, potentially reducing the incidence of these activities before the law takes effect.
Infrastructure Adjustments: Implementing such laws may require changes to existing infrastructure, such as updating traffic control systems and public spaces where sideshows commonly occur. This period allows for the planning and execution of such adjustments.
Legislative and Judicial Review: The extended timeline provides a buffer for addressing any potential legal challenges or further legislative refinements that may arise. It ensures that the law is robust and can withstand any constitutional or procedural scrutiny.
Phased Implementation: Gradual implementation can help in phasing in the law’s various components, allowing different agencies and stakeholders to adapt progressively rather than abruptly.
By setting the effective date for 2025, lawmakers aim to ensure a smooth transition and effective enforcement once the law is in place.

elipalacios5003, the bridge is a major artery. I know San Jose well. Side shows don't block major arteries in your area. When major roadways such as the bridge in SF get blocked, it stops importanpt responders such as medical responders from getting to areas they need to within the city. When major roadways get blocked from side shows, all participants should be charged with unintentional homicide when someone dies. In your area of San Jose when medical response is need, they can always get around the sideshows and get to the call.

This type of sideshow has been going on for going on 30 years. I used to go to sideshows starting in the late 90's, and back then, it was really just an Oakland affair. People would come from all over the Bay area to come to Foothill blvd in Oakland to race, whip donuts, and generally behave stupidly in cars. By the time I was 21 years old, I had already grown so sick of going to sideshows that I would just fall asleep in my friend's car while a sideshow was going on right outside the car window.
It seems now that it has spread out of control, and people in every Bay area city want to have sideshows.
    For anyone reading this, let me tell you what I got out of going to sideshows;
Thousands of dollars in car repairs - I spent money I didn't really have repairing damage to my own car which I claimed to "care about" - in the end, I turned my cars into rolling scrap heaps, and decades later I know damn well I have nothing to show for it except for financial loss.
Thousands of dollars in tickets to Alameda county.
    Multiple 'exhibition of speed' charges.
Thousands of dollars in impound fees to Alameda county car impound lots.
Multiple driving on suspended license charges until I finally got my license revoked, and couldn't get it back for years.
Thousands of dollars to get my license back after revocation.
None of this was fucking worth it. All those people cheering for you to whip your shit - are they gonna pay your bail? Are they gonna pay to repair your car when you wrap it (and you will wrap it, even the best drivers who claim to "have dummy handles" still crash their shit)? Are they going to pay all your tickets, or somehow get your license back for you once it gets revoked?
Nah, they ain't gonna do ANY of that shit.
Wake up man, this shit is stupid a/f. I had to bang my head against the wall to realize it 20+ years ago, maybe I can help someone else realize it now before they have to go through what I did.

@@CertifiedSt Yes. Most people know that this happens in various places in Bay Area communities. So, the answer to why this is news is because it happened on the friggin' *Bay Bridge* -- a major infrastructure linking two land masses of the Bay Area. This didn't occur on some side street or intersection where people could avoid it and drive around it. Commuters were effectively trapped and temporarily imprisoned on the Bridge.
After 9-11 we were all made aware of the vulnerability and sensitivity of bridges as potential terrorist targets; and yet local terrorists are allowed to take over a major transit thoroughfare. The only way this kind of behavior will garner enough official attention to be stopped is if the perpetrators and spectators are wearing keffiyehs or hijabs.
