I just wanted to tell you thank you again for this video. I’ve watched it several times over the last couple years and I really love the pilot parallel calligraphy pens. They are inexpensive and a real joy to use. I always find it funny that I love pens, ink, paper, and calligraphy yet I have the worst handwriting. I’m not really sure why I’m drawn to it but I am. Thank you again Steven.
I was a bit late joining the Pilot Parallel party, but I'm so glad I did! After watching your excellent and thorough review I bought one, didn't go for the monster 6mm thought I would start off small with the 1.5. Love this pen, I know it's cheap, .but my calligraphy has never looked better. Thanks for the review, I'm a bit hooked on your vids and now have an ever growing list of fountain pens that need to be in my possession!!!
What's not to like ? Relatively inexpensive, funky design - brilliant mechanism (capillary); good range of widths with colour-coded caps & designation; complete strip down & rebuild - it's genius. I love mine for their versatility, lightweight handling, & eyedropper-friendly, too... soooopah !! Excellent re-review, Stephen :D
This is by far the best video I have seen about parallel pens, thank you. I am a beginner and a lefty so have my work cut out! I have discovered that paper quality is a huge issue.
+Tim Clayton I'm a lefty parallel user also! If you haven't, get yourself a blank Rhodia notebook. You will have so much fun. Also, if you are using the included "booklet" for calligraphic fonts, try and do all of the strokes backwards, so that you can pull instead of push and make it a lot less choppy. This is just what I have learned from my writing with them.
What with the pound me too movement yeah, but let's be honest, that movement is for women who want attention and to ruin somebody's life unfortunately in the sickest form of social justice.
Domino52o I say that it’s fair to say that we should investigate and take seriously any claims of sexual assault, but the #metoo movement doesn’t seem to be about seeking impartial justice for victims but instead conducting a hearsay based Salem witch trial.
@@SaranshV Imagine virtue signalling about people who aren't even around to observe the signal. In response to your question: No anger. Just disdain and pity for those who are lying. How do judge which ones those are by the way?
Thank you for showing how to use the converter! I had been awkwardly trying to squeeze it with my fingers on those soft little windows before I watched you do it with your fingers on the metal bits. Much better! :P Thanks!
I have only just found out about these pens and they really are quite wonderful. I have so much going on right now, I can't wait to have some spare time to buy some and give them a go.
The cartridges that come with the parallel pens is the Pilot Mixable ink. If you buy the set of 3 pens you get all 12 colour cartridges. The 'gradation' effect is acheived by holding one nib 90 degrees against the other to transfer some of the other colour; it's an old calligraphy trick that works well with the parallel pens (not invented for or specific to them).
Agreed, that got me laughing for quite a while. =) The rubber converter is actually quite interesting, with a great amount of ink capacity. The rubber itself is not that durable; I`ve heard that some inks can melt the rubber bladder. They make good toys, but not reliable everyday converters.
Nice demonstration of what the pen can do. My question is about the ink to be used. The precautions in the instructions note the following: ""IMPORTANT Use only PILOT MIXABLE COLOR IC-P3 (exclusive cartridge for PILOT Parallel Pen". This is particularly confusing, given that the pen comes with the converter that you show. It seems to me that any Pilot cartridge would work, as well as any ink. BTW, the clipless cap with the protrusion is designed, I think, to prevent the pen from rolling on a level surface.
Wow, I think I fell in love in this type of writing. 6mm nib is too much for me. I think I'm going to order Lamy Joy with some finer nib. Just for some fancy and beautiful things in letters. Thank you so much. Great video :)
this looks like it would make for a great "highlighter" fountain pen because of the flatness of the nib. any ideas what inks to use if I want to use this as a highligher for text books?
I love these pens! I have all 4 sizes and they are a treat to use. Can't wait until I'm comfortable enough to talk and write calligraphy at the same time, lol
Hey Stephen. I own the others Pilot Parallel pens (1.5, 2.4, 3.5) and of course the 6.0 too, and they are great pens for calligraphy. But the 1.5 mm skips even using Parker Quink!
What you said about having to dip and re dip every time cannot be any more true. Speaking as a former dip pen calligrapher who was really challenged by that notion when I was learning. I gave in and practiced with some random highlighter I filled with dark violent stamp ink for a while after that. I don't know why not using the 'proper materials' could be so frowned upon. At the end of the day the best part is to have fun writing and making art imo no? (Though I can understand it a bit, metal nibs are a bit more durable than felt and, for the most part, more affordable than a fountain pen. And can last you ages when you maintain your nibs well.) But although I learned through alternate ways, when I came back to dip pens with more knowledge and practice through felt, I think I was able to enjoy them better and have lots more fun. They're quite mystical to write with, and the sounds they make with each stroke are quite intoxicating. I hope it is the same for you with this parallel and your lovely italics. Beautiful Calligraphy Sir Brown!
i have a problem with this parallel pen. Whenever i try to do very thin edge (in gothic, at the end of the move), it comes out really thick... might be a problem in a paper?
They are beginning to appear more frequently in Europe. A few months ago i saw them only in the Internet but last week i found this pen in a regular store in Warsaw. And the price was really good (about 12€).
Hi there, got this pen and have some issues finding opaque enough ing to get those rich black tones as with the original cartridge - would you recommend me some? I tried Pelikan brilliant black and pilot black (ordinary one) and I am still not quite satisfied with those. thank you.
Hello Mr. Brown! I loved your video on the pilot parallel pen (I just purchased the set) and will be converting them to eyedropper pens soon. I do have a question for you but it is unrelated to the actual pens but rather that plastic sheet. Do you perhaps have slightly sweaty hands (enough where it begins to make waves on paper) like I do? Or do you just use it due to preference? Also, this might sound odd, but where would I get one? I don't really know where I would get sheets of plastic like that...I'd assume a craft store of some kind?
Just for your knowledge and recent finders of this video. I recently purchased these 4 pens and they no longer come with the con-20 to clean the pen. It comes with a blue cleaning apparatus (can't really describe it) that will not fit in the pen body as a cartridge.
Thank you! I've really enjoyed watching many of your videos, and I love your cursive! Just one thing...I can't stop thinking of that guy from the Inbetweeners when I hear you speak... Subbed btw ;)
This may be a silly question, but I was just wondering where I could find a full alphabet of the lettering you demonstrated with at first. I think it is a beautiful lettering and would like to learn it.
Ooh finally I found what that pen you keep using in reviews is. I've been looking for this to use as a highligther pen. Do you or anyone else know if the feed and nib can be put in other pens? I wouldn't mind being able to put it in a more conventional looking fountain pen, maybe a Konrad or another pilot like the 78G or metro.
Hey, great video. Never heard of this Pilot Parallel pens before. I like this pen. Will consider buying one. Useful video. I have one different kind of question. What is the chant from intro? I love Gregorians :)
Eric and I decided at the Ohio Pen Show that Pilot Parallels are toys and don't count as fountain pens when counting how many pens you have in your collection. Otherwise Eric is way over his self-imposed limit of 12 pens. (Wisely, I have not imposed a limit on my collection addition at this time.)
Limits are bad things in this case :-). It's a tough call to classify the Parallel: they have ink reservoirs and feeds, but the nib is not traditional, although they do use capillary action to write... ;-).
Those are great pens... but in Europe it is no easy to get those Pilot and it is the same for the Namiki pens, for example (resin Falcon) Anyway great and very fun pens...
Whats with all the Samurai equipment? I thought the pen was mightier than the sword.
"A minor difference in width" that made me laugh so hard.
LOL same here

Sorry, but "minor difference in width" just killed me.
It is as the saying, "Never mind the quality...feel the width.... " Understatement on Dr. Brown's behalf, methinks ;D

Thank you and thank you for quick response. Love your videos and whenever I see something new, I go to your videos. Thanks!😊
Thank you for this! I just got my Pilot parallel pen set, so this video was very helpful to me.
Fantastic Video S.B. Keep up the great work. Nick.
so satisfying when u started drawing calligraphy
I think you are a fantastic reviewer. Thank you again. (I browse your vids and I'm NEVER disappointed).
Thank you, that's very kind of you
It's as you've said, v convenient and easy to use. That's my experience with the orange cap 2.4mm nib.
Thanks for the great review! Just discovered these pens and wanted to know more... You answered all my questions!
Thank you for showing how to use the converter! I had been awkwardly trying to squeeze it with my fingers on those soft little windows before I watched you do it with your fingers on the metal bits. Much better! :P Thanks!

1.5mm, 2.4mm, 3.8mm and 6mm are the standard sizes.

I love these pens! I have all 4 sizes and they are a treat to use. Can't wait until I'm comfortable enough to talk and write calligraphy at the same time, lol
Very useful, thanks Stephen. More convenient than Automatic Pens for sure, so long as you're happy to stick with fountain pen ink.
Question: What is that glass thing under his hand that he uses when he writes? What does it do? at 10:13. Thanks
It's just to keep grease from my skin from soiling the paper. Greasy paper will disrupt the ink flow of a fountain pen.
sbrebrown Ok Thanks!
Omg omg omg. You did this for me. You actually did it. Thank you so much
Quick question that is kind of related. Anyone any suggestions for a flexi fountain pen for Copperplate?
Hey Stephen. I own the others Pilot Parallel pens (1.5, 2.4, 3.5) and of course the 6.0 too, and they are great pens for calligraphy. But the 1.5 mm skips even using Parker Quink!

I love my Pilot Parallels, too. Another great feature is the cost; they are very inexpensive :-)
Another great video, thanks.

Will this spatter on an up-stroke?
I've not experienced that.
Would Speedball India ink be safe to place in these pens?
If it doesn't explicitly say "fountain pen ink" on the bottle, it's not safe to put in fountain pens.
sbrebrown okay, thanks!
Hello Stephen, thanks for share! Where did you got this Pilot parallel pens ?
Hi there, got this pen and have some issues finding opaque enough ing to get those rich black tones as with the original cartridge - would you recommend me some? I tried Pelikan brilliant black and pilot black (ordinary one) and I am still not quite satisfied with those. thank you.
You could try Aurora black or Noodler's X-Feather, two very black blacks.
Noodler's Black is the blackest of the blacks and is called bullet proof. It's also archival quality.
Brilliant. Off to the shops I go to get one!
Hello Mr. Brown! I loved your video on the pilot parallel pen (I just purchased the set) and will be converting them to eyedropper pens soon.

I just use it to stop oils from my skin from rubbing off on the paper. It's just a sheet of plastic, anything will do.
If you want to get 2 pens to do varying color, would you get same two or a 1.5 and a 2.4?
Susan Holton I'd get two sizes, that way you have more options when using them.

Good video ! I am just starting out calligraphy - which nib size do you recommend for beginners? Thank you.
I think the broader the better because that makes it easier to create the character shapes.
Thanks sbrebrown. As I'm just starting out I'm using Artline Calligraphy pen 3.0. Not bad for a beginner

Super. Gracias por tu explicación
Hey buddy! Do these pens themselves last a very long time? As in durable, last a year with same performance? Granted you refill the ink obviously.
Oh yes, I've been using these for years now and they still work as new!
what was the ink in the far right line in the line sample thanks for the video mr brown
I'm sorry, I don't recally after all this time.
ah not to worry thanks for the video
I am confused at how you are able to create such a clean line and every time I use the 2.0 pen I find it bleeds like crazy
Then you have to use higher quality paper.

BUT Stephen the sheets of metal touch that is not parallel :p
Is that 2.4mm
No, 6.0!
It has a blue tip so it s 6.0
2.4 has a yellow tip
This is the... ehhh ... the, Japanese Fine.
That's interesting lol. The M nib of pilot(of mine) is finer than the F of waterman.
whats wrong with the intro music!!!???
