Hello to Merthyr! My 4x- great grand father left Merthyr back in the 1840's and lived in Malad, Idaho, United States until his death. I've always wanted to see where he was from. Thanks for the videos! Bless you!
that was filled with mountains of rubble from the old houses in Penydarren, used to watch the lorries come in spill their load then we used to look for pop arley bottles and old tools from the demolished houses/coal houses
I’m sure the site is a natural spring, that’s why it’s allways been boggy, the recent earth works could be pipe Laying for drainage, to dry the site out shril
One thing that puzzles me is "the boathouse." My friends and I spent many hours fishing in the Goitre Pond but there was no trace of a boathouse or the remains of one and we knew every foot of the area around the pond. The only building of note was a Taff Fechan water pumping station located about 100 yards from the bottom of First Avenue and adjacent to the pond bank, which was quite high at that point. Every Sunday in fine weather it was usual to see half a dozen or so fishermen sitting on the bank with rods, sandwiches and cigarettes or pipes. Fishing? Perhaps, but it was their way of escaping from the house and wife for a few hours peace. One Sunday afternoon circa 1953-4 we were amazed to see those men leap to their feet and start running towards First Avenue. A Mr Leonard had parked his circa 1930 car at the top of the road and the hand brake had failed. The fear was a child might be in it. Fortunately it was empty but at the bottom it knocked down Powell's garden wall in No. 2 and it took the council three months to rebuild it. Happy days!
brill story mate, mi guessing it must have been demolished years before you was born, do u remember any merthyr express article about man finding roman coins near the pond when it was drained?
We lived about 50 yards from the Goitre Pond from 1942 and together with my friends explored about every inch of the banks and surrounding with no sign of anything, It was farm fields on three sides and the newly built Galon Uchaf estate on the fourth. By the time the Goitre Pond was drained I'd emigrated so I'd have heard nothing. My parents used to send me the Merthyr Express for years but I don't remember reading anything about that. We used to sail home-made toy boats on the pond and in the very hard winter of 1947 it froze to the extent that people were able to skate on it for weeks!@@merthyrtydfil-thepast1689
We've lost so much over the years I sometimes wonder what is hidden underground that has been buried under some of the huge slag tips on our hillsides on both sides of the valley are the any old maps that predate these slag tips I cant find anything older than the 1900 os map that shows any features
When i was a kid (1950s) rumour had it that a scuba diver went down and when he came up again his hair had turned white with fright! Of course he never did tell what he saw - ha!
Another site that interests me is called ffynon lazarus / lazarus well which is just over the top of heolgerrig mountain about 500 yards down from the mast on the top there lazarus was the guy who jesus resurrected from the dead in the bible so ffynon lazarus/Lazarus well is a curious name for an ancient well here this place is on the old 1900 os map and only a few hundred yards from Twyn Gwersyll, the area of its location is very overgrown with trees and vegetation etc but with a name like lazarus well youd think there would be some history or at least something to read up on it but I cant find anything online other than that its marked on the 1900 os map it's in a very isolated spot and my guess is that it's an ancient holy well similar to tydfils well worth looking at in my opinion due to it's close proximity to Twyn Gwersyll would love to see the area around the well cleared and investigated with metal detectors and excavation etc
The way all the water is sitting there is Natures way of saying This should be a pond leave the fuck alone, shame Town obliterate so much local History. Thanks for posting.
There were two small streams running into the Goitre Pond, one from the North, past Dan y Castell Farm and one from the East from the Brynniau direction. I've wondered what happened to them since in winter they carried a great deal of water---to the point where the water level in the pond crested, despite the outlet just below First Avenue.
Interesting video mate love my history 👍 also what happened to the paedophile hunter site ? Remember that 3ft bloke in Treharris offering you lot out 🤣
Gotta appreciate you pall. 97% of people living in Merthyr would never know all these hidden secrets you upload. Great stuff 💪🏻

Was there another lake right at the top of cyfaryhfa Park back in the day ?
Yes, it was there as late as the late 1950's when it too was drained.
