  • Some woodburning machines have a large variety of tips and it can be a daunting task to choose just a few to begin with. This is Part 1 of a 5 part video by Sue Walters; describing the various types of wire pyrography tips for decorative burning. The video explains the types of handles, breaks down the tip groups and shows how each tip variety should be used. It simplifies tip selection for decorative burning; saving money by preventing unnecessary spending.

Excellent video - clear, concise and I've learned more in 4:55 than in all the other pyrography videos I've watched today.

What type of wood burner are you recommending for starting out ? .. Would like to start to add pyrograpy to my woodturnings, and I am not sure what kind of machine to start with. I want to avoid the cheapest stuff because cheap tools are almost always bad tools ... :) any recomendations are welcome

I had a cheap one and it sucked. It was so horrible that I gave up woodburning . I thought that, I just wasn't good enough for it.
I finally got the burnmaster that come with the one pen. Now I love woodburning and it's such a fun hobby. Definitely don't go cheap or you will be discouraged.

Thank you so much for all the videos you share. I just bought a book of yours too. I learn a lot. I am just a beginner but determined to learn and practice a lot. I completely understand the different nibs now because of uour explanation. I have a beginners question. How do you know how high to set the tempature of your pyrography machine? I have bought poplar wood to burn. Greetings from the netherlands, marianne

Sue... Love your videos.... I do a lot of woodburning and love it... all my work is done on raw wood.... was asked to burn a design into a cabinet door that is finished with laquer... Is there a way to do that with out melting the lacquer? I have tried diferent heats and tips and each one seems to melt the laquer... any suggestions.?

Hi:) I'm glad you like the vids. Re the lacquer; it doesn't really matter what tips you use, it will still melt the finish. The only option would be to remove as much of the finish as possible....getting down to the raw wood. A word of warning...inhaling the smoke and fumes from burning through the lacquer won't be good for you. I hope this helps. Regards,Sue.
