Scenario: Two hikers want to go to a place they visited in the winter time at 8,000 feet altitude. When you scheduled them last week, the temperature was 20 degrees forecasting 25 degrees for today. The actual temperature at 1,000 (29.92) this morning is 28 degrees, however the afternoon is forecast to be 35 degrees. How do you calculate your trip? Will you be able to take your customers to their destination safely? How do you advise your customers on their risks for picking them up? I LOVE your videos!!!

I'm currently learning in Colorado, so we are getting 8000ft+ density altitude quite often...
We got 38 C last week and I had to call a no-go, as it pushed the DA over 9000....
But I'm loving flying and learning in a difficult environment, as it forces me to really utilize good techniques, like going carefully and methodically from ETL into ground effect.
I love watching these videos to supplement my learning and further drill in the knowledge, and I really hope I can make it up there to fly someday, especially with the incredible scenery and all that power to spare!
    Keep up the great work!

@M- What model Heli are you training in? Just curious, I'm in Vegas and with the temps routinely getting over 40C this time of year everyone is getting up a bit earlier than we'd like just to get in some flying before it gets too hot.

@@autom7134 we've got 3 R22's, one of which struggles for power... DA yesterday was 9179 which meant hovering at all would be tough.
Certainly, beating the heat helps a lot!

Just wondering, what's the deal with the perforations in the tail rotor blades? A manufacturing artefact perhaps.

Something you have to worry about here in Melbourne Australia (winter at the moment here). We sit in summer mid to high 20s average but can have spikes into the 40s.
First solo in a helicopter next week by the looks here for me.

I buddy hope you are well. It sounds like you will be better off flying at night when it cools down a bit. What's the temperature like at 8PM could you do a bit of flying before dark or up to midnight. Take care and happy flying buddy. You might be better off moving back to the UK so I can see you again and if you have the time you could teach me. Take care and keep safe happy flying buddy phil.

Turbo Normalized Helos? Have no effect on blade compression in warm air. But doesn't lose horsepower. I am glad the Gyroplane guys developed the teeter system to allow the helicopter to be born. Great Helis like the UH-1 Huey. My Uncle graded and went to Hiller to work on designing helis. But put on the only Airplane Hiller ever made. He went on Lockheed disappointed he never got to design a helicopter.

Engine or blades? Density wise…. Blades do better on cold air because there’s more of it(air)? You can’t see air but if you could, I take from this that on a colder day blades rise itself from air. Please correct me if I’m wrong I don’t fly but through your channel I pretend I can.

Question I think it would be different if it was a Jet Turbine ,it operates different than a Piston Engine regards Trevor.W.Bacelli. Biloela Qld Australia.

    • @stansmith4054
      @stansmith4054 3 ปีที่แล้ว

No not really. External temps have little to do with performance. Warmer air is less dense, takes more energy to maintain lift than in cooler air. Most engines are designed to work fine in normal temps (0-110 degrees Fahrenheit).

Sun itself does NOT effect performance. Temperature and density altitude does.
I don't get the title of this video.
The answer is that it doesn't.
    It's sunny in the Arctic.
