A PROBLEM Behind the KCS Safety Unit

- Norfolk Southern train number 187, led by the Kansas City Southern "Safety Starts Here" locomotive, was on its way through Atlanta, Georgia when one of its cars had an issue. After discovering the problem, the train crew brought a cut of cars to South Yard, giving us a good look at the unique locomotive in the lead.

Quite a grade change on that yard.
Most likely what's called a "hump yard" which was used for switching cars but I thought all had been closed down or the hump was removed
Yeah I used to stand at that crossing after school before I go home and watch a few train go by

I have to admit, I kind of hated myself for missing this. At least I got to see bnsf 5872 earlier that day on a northbound coal train.

I've seen this unit multiple times through Houston. KCS passes here every hourm

The brownie line has significantly increased kCS and bnsf activity as UP kinda has drawn back. Bloomington yard you can catch a ton of action

In the back ground of one of the first shots you can see a welded rail train it was out in Douglas and villa rica for about 3 weeks doing work perhaps the orange maintenance vehicles were just back after finishing up out there

@@railfanmaximstill7279 KCS announced they was going to build a yard near where I live in Jerseyville Illinois about 5 years ago but it was contingent on the completion of the highway 255 extension which all but done. I’m wondering if the CP purchase is going to change the plans or not.

While KCS was bought by CP, I believe CP and KCS are currently operating as separate companies. There are issues the STB still has to review before an official merger.

When CP bought Central Maine & Quebec Railway (CMQ), they left the engines in their original paint scheme.
They're repainting them now.

I have seen the KCS 4859 in México....
I remember working on 6901 at serm before they moved
I saw a grain hopper train being lead by 2 KCS GE-8 and GE-9 units
I can't even get footage of a normal KCS unit since in Dallas TX, things like foreign power are somewhat uncommon, but I've seen an NS & a CSX in Dallas once.

With our MoW equipment none of them have knuckles. They are all loaded on flat cars, usually only if its over 100 miles though or they will travel them

Strangely, it's not. Not sure why it has such a severe grade.
@@v12productions Must make switching harder. Cars can't be kicked up that grade, they would have to be pushed all the way. Glad I'm not the man on the ground lol 🤣

I found mine used on Amazon.
So I'm not sure it would be a broken knuckle. Those are repairable by the crew 99% of the time. Maybe it was a planned set out or there was some other issue.

Don’t be afraid to get closer, most railroad workers don’t mind rail fans.
I disagree. A Rail fan is known as a foamer. Also we have an extraordinary amount of rules and protocols to follow so unless your in a safe area. Just stay away and watch. I personally have no problem shooting the shit with someone about it, but safety above all.
