"Reggie-Ray, you only have three... two, more concussions left." Also, "It's a banana split" is still something stuck in my head everytime i see Captain America.
I think my favourite Nielson line was from the 2nd Naked Gun movie: "The truth hurts doesn't it, Hapsburg? oh sure, not as much as jumping on bicycle with the seat missing, but it hurts!"
My favorite line from Airplane! is from Lloyd Bridges' character. In this one scene, he's giving orders left and right, and then his wife calls, and he gives -- totally deadpan -- this rapid-fire order. "I want the kids in bed by 9, I want the dog fed, yard watered, gated locked, and get a note to the milkman -- 'No more cheese'!"
No mention for the greatest dialogue in movie history: "We need to get these people to a hospital" "a hospital, what is it?" "it's a big building where sick people go, but that's not important right now"
Don't forget the series Due South. Where dignified RCMP officer Frobicer (Neilson ), in Chicago , is going to valiently chase after a criminal on horseback. But he falls off. Then he tries a motorbike! Falls off again. Then he just calls a taxi. End scene. Oh I loved that!!
One of my favourite visual gags of all time is in Scary Movie 3, near the end when they're talking about how to kill the aliens by hitting them in the head real hard with a shovel, and then a character cocks his shovel like a shotgun and a shell comes out.
The bit where Clippy pops up and says "It looks like you're trying to take over the world, do you need help?" is basically all I can remember of that movie, also Drake Bell's seemingly first and last silver screen appearance
It’s sad that the people behind the Movie Movies has the potential to be funny but got so obsessed with just being crass, rude and violent whilst making random references and offending people that the humour died. Like they had a great chance to parody the whole thing if Uncle Ben being Peter’s father figure by having him actually be his father or something but instead they just had Leslie making dirty sex jokes
Don't get me wrong, I love "Spaceballs", and "Robinhood Men In Tights". But the problem with these Mel Brooks parodies, in comparison to "Airplane!", is that the whole time in Mel Brooks movies, everyone is winking at the camera as if to say "that was a joke. Did you get it? Did you get it!?". All the pauses after the jokes like there is supposed to be a laugh track inserted like it's a sitcom or something. It throws the timing off and turns what would be a funny joke into a cringe moment WAY too often.
I was 23 before I realised 'Flying High' was called 'Airplane' in every other country and had no idea what people were referring to before then. From Aus
"Leslie Nielsen's casting was an intentional decision as was the casting of every other actor in the film" As opposed to all the films where every cast member was accidentally featured in the film?
I mean, yeah. It's rare that the cast is chosen before auditions, and parts are specifically written for their style. You can see it sometimes in films where the writers really wanted another actor but they couldn't do it for whatever reason. You watch it and think, "Oooh yeah, that line is really not for this actor, it's much more for the original choice."
@Numinous123 what? Top secret is I think the best ZAZ comedy movie not my favorite because of my taste i prefer police squad but Top Secret is their best film and too be honest Spy Hard is bad not as bad as the other non ZAZ Leslie Nielsen movie but he is so goofy, just play it straight
Favorite cheesy parody (other than Airplane!) has to be National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1, so many great lines and the straight-man delivery from actors such as William Shatner and Samuel Jackson. "What are you doing?" "What does it look like I'm doing, I'm taking a shit." And the random Bruce Willis as John McClane cameo.
My favorite is a sight gag. Striker, in the cockpit asks for a tool, specifically a screwdriver. He is handed a drink made with vodka and fruit juice. A screwdriver. Which he immediately pours over his head, because he has a, "drinking problem."
The best "joke" is in the first Scary Movie. During the garage scene death (parodying the death of Rose McGowan in Scream 1) the girl screams "Please! I'm just a day player!". Which is basically film jargon for an Extra with speaking lines. It's subtle and you would only get it if you knew about film.
Zero Hour! itself is a remake of a CBC teleplay _Flight Into Danger_ written by Arthur Hailey (Airport) which had starred James Doohan (Scotty!) as Ted Stryker. It was also remade as a made for TV movie in 1970s staring Doug McClure.
Sorry to say, one of my favorite joke of all time is in I believe 3. They come across the aliens, the black guy grabs a shovel, and then he shotgun cocks the shovel. No one ever acknowledges it, not even the bright red shotgun shell that jumped out with the movement, and its the most hilarious thing I can imagine.
I'm with you on not another teen movie... my favorite quote that I still use to this day is "God dammit, Reggie Ray!" The poor guy gets blamed for everything around my house😆
I love how I just watched this movie for the first time a few hours ago, and just now I see this video. This movie is amazing and the humor is so pure and subtle, I couldn’t stop loving it.
Did you know over in Australia and New Zealand, Airplane! is alternatively titled “Flying High!”? Alternative titles to movies is actually quite common in other countries.
Fun fact: Robert Hays, the actor who plays Ted Striker, appeared in the movie Sharknado 2 as an Airline Pilot. He *was* going to have the fish, but changed his mind and got the chicken.
Best part of the second one for me was when they had William Shatner look through the periscope, see the USS Enterprise from Star Trek go by and give that WTF look...
Idk why but my favorite joke of all the parody movies is so small and simple but for some reason it cracks me up every time. It’s Scary Movie 3 towards the end when they go to confront the aliens with shovels, and Anthony Anderson one hand racks the shove like a shotgun and a shell pops out. Idk why but it’s genius
My favorite spoof is the 2008 Superhero Movie staring Drake Bell(main character), Leslie Nielsen(uncle), and Kevin Hart(best friend). If you want to see why just search “superhero movie nail gun scene”.
"Men with Brooms" may be the greatest melding of Neilson's dramatic and comedy acting abilities. Heart felt scenes talking about his wife who has passed and also growing shrooms for personal use. Though it is fairly intensely Canadian in so many ways.
My favourite background joke is from a TV show - _The New Adventures of Beans Baxter,_ I think. During a car chase past a bunch of loading docks, one car crashes through a huge pile of boxes stacked outside. From the way they scatter, there is clearly nothing in them. Each box bears, stenciled on the side, the name *M. T. BAUX CO.*
Zuckerburg uses the "heads up" line in Baseketball too when Doug throws a ball to a blind kid from the dream's come true foundation and it clocks him right in the face.
I can't remember which one of those movies it was but the running joke with the guy trying to start a slow clap and failing three times before someone else does it successfully at the end and he beats the shit out of them for it. Gets me every time.
my favorite scene is also from police squad. nielsen walks into a room and the guy asks him "who are you? how did you get in here?" nielsen says "i'm a locksmith, and i'm a locksmith"
The prop sound was another example of where they recreated the original exactly. The plane in Zero Hour! is an old prop driven plane, so the prop sound is always there. Love this movie.
I caught Zero Hour one late night by accident (not knowing it was the movie Airplane was based off of) and its hard not to laugh having seen Airplane first. ,...and Leslie Neilson was great in one of my favorite old sci-fi movies, Forbidden Planet.
Nice shot of Leslie Nielsen in Forbidden Planet. I have Zero Hour! It's amazing how many lines in Airplane! are straight out of Zero Hour! There are so many little things in Airplane! Captain Oveur giving the little boy a model aeroplane, straight out of Zero Hour! I thought Peter Graves also did an excellent job of playing it straight. Also, have a look at the bookcase behind the Dr at the mayo clinic. Full of jars of mayonnaise!
Just watched my first Leslie Nelson movie last night! (The naked gun) and that nice beaver line is so shocking until the beaver comes outta nowhere and some how its less shocking
You forgot a little detail, while the title "Airplane!" used the exclamation point to just blatantly copy the title for "Zero Hour!", it is more important to note that the Being 707 shown in the film produces propeler sound effects from the turbo jet engines because the film from the 50's had piston/radial engines.
Recently finished graveyard shift at my dead-end job, I'm 8 beers in and eating white rice smothered in ground beef and brown gravy watching old episodes of Fact Fiend. Is there a better way to spend my Friday morning? Probably. Would I rather be anywhere else? No, not really. It's not my best life, but it's a good one. Stay awesome my friends!
One of my favorite little details that they didn't have to do but did because it was funny, is when they go to pick up Robert Stack's character Captain Rex Kramer. You see him walk up to a mirror and start putting on his uniform, and the camera pans so that only the mirror with his reflection is visible, Kramer himself is out of shot. There's a quick cut to a shot of a guy being mauled by a dog, then back to the same shot of Kramer in the mirror. Then he finishes putting on his uniform, and his reflection steps out of the mirror and walks away. Beautiful practical effect. I didn't even notice it when I first saw it, but it tripped me out when I finally did.
OK I got the best one- Rex Kramer --" I'll need three men up in the tower - you, Nuebuer. You, macias... " Johnny- "Me,John. Big tree!" I remember I was 15, had smoked a joint and watched this with my best friend and this line KILLED me!!
This is one of my favourite films, you notice something new every time you play it. Some of the best stuff is hidden in plain sight. Like Elaine, the hopeless romantic; "Remember when I used to sit on your face and wiggle?" Or Striker who had a problem drinking. They could never make a movie like that in this day and age. My favourite scene is where they're lining up to calm that hysterical woman (It's a handy meme). When Nelson is called away he gets in one last cheeky blow (I'm sure that was off script). If that makes me a bad person, my second favourite is the child fighting for her life during the sing song.😉 The character delivery is excellent, it's as if they don't realise what they're saying. There's so many excellent one liners in that film that it's hard to keep track of them all. Fun fact: The first scene is a cameo for the directors, they just wanted to blow some money and have fun.🤘
Every scene from Airplane! is pure gold, but I always loved the car journey scene. It starts like any other obviously rear-orojected scene; but then they hit that cyclist, and then it gets faster and faster, and then they're being chased by Native Americans on horseback along a bumpy track. It's just comedy genius. Other highlights include Otto the autopilot, the mirror scene, the Mayo clinic where every shelf is full of jars of mayonnaise, the way that everyone who listens to Ted Striker's story ends up killing themselves, and of course every scene with Johnny 🤣
Charlie Sheen talking to the police officer at the scene of his wife’s car accident in Scary Movie 3 has the best lowbrow joke I’ve ever witnessed. They parody a similar scene from Signs. She tries to explain to him that his wife was pinned against a tree and cut in half and this will be the last time he will ever speak to her. He keeps misunderstandings and they both keep randomly pulling food out of thin air to use as props while she tries to explain. Towards the end he holds up a doughnut and says, “let’s say this is the bottom half. What are the odds I can get some time alone with that?” The cop says, “I don’t understand.” He holds up a hotdog in the other hand and says, “here. Let me explain.” He is abruptly interrupted as he starts moving the food items towards each other. The tone and timing of that scene, the grimness of the situation, the absurdity of the request, and the randomness of the food props make that one of my favorite gags of all time.
Scary movie three. When Charlie sheen is talking to female cop and she is getting into her car her hat gets bigger three times. Slowly as they talk it gets bigger and bigger till it’s almost to big to fit into the car.
That was a similar thing to Tommy Lee Jones being in Men in Black. He went to one of the directors or producers and said he wasn't a comedy actor. They told him they don't want him to be a comedian, they want him to be serious.

Then he finishes putting on his uniform, and his reflection steps out of the mirror and walks away. Beautiful practical effect. I didn't even notice it when I first saw it, but it tripped me out when I finally did.
I use to like Meet the Spartans when I was a teen even though it might be the worst parody movie
My favorite parody has to be Mafia! (1998). It has so many jokes in the background it makes you laugh even after you re-watch it several times.
OK I got the best one-
Rex Kramer --" I'll need three men up in the tower - you, Nuebuer. You, macias... "
Johnny- "Me,John. Big tree!"
I remember I was 15, had smoked a joint and watched this with my best friend and this line KILLED me!!
wow i cant believe they intentionally chose the cast
This is one of my favourite films, you notice something new every time you play it. Some of the best stuff is hidden in plain sight. Like Elaine, the hopeless romantic; "Remember when I used to sit on your face and wiggle?" Or Striker who had a problem drinking. They could never make a movie like that in this day and age.
My favourite scene is where they're lining up to calm that hysterical woman (It's a handy meme). When Nelson is called away he gets in one last cheeky blow (I'm sure that was off script). If that makes me a bad person, my second favourite is the child fighting for her life during the sing song.😉
The character delivery is excellent, it's as if they don't realise what they're saying. There's so many excellent one liners in that film that it's hard to keep track of them all.
Fun fact: The first scene is a cameo for the directors, they just wanted to blow some money and have fun.🤘
Every time I think parody movie, that kid getting launched through the window in Scary Movie 3 always pops into my head. Its so bizarre and funny.
I just want to tell you both, goodluck, we're all counting on you.
One, two. Okay, I'm done here.
*turns around, opens door*
*sigh..*
*pulls abacus out*
Every scene from Airplane! is pure gold, but I always loved the car journey scene.
What are the odds I can get some time alone with that?”
The cop says, “I don’t understand.”
He holds up a hotdog in the other hand and says, “here.
Slowly as they talk it gets bigger and bigger till it’s almost to big to fit into the car.
the prop plane sound is pulled right out of Zero Hour!
That was a similar thing to Tommy Lee Jones being in Men in Black. He went to one of the directors or producers and said he wasn't a comedy actor. They told him they don't want him to be a comedian, they want him to be serious.
