Never liked New Wave. Some decent one-hit-wonders but the overall vibe was too disaffected and brittle. Not much talent was required to either write or play it either. (Rush/Yes geek)
This is my 14 y.o.+ period. The perception of Billy Joel among the plebes (us) when he first started catching on was that he landed somewhere between true rock and mainstream rock.
He eventually drifted all the way to mainstream and has been thought of as that since.

This was Billy’s tribute to 50’s rock n roll. He references many things that were hip & happening then especially the fashions sidewinders tab collars & sharkskin jackets. Many bands in the 70’s admitted to influences from fifties. Now many singers are borrowing from the eighties. What goes around comes back around. Peace brother!

@@lucie4185 I recall something written or spoken at the time to the effect that it was an "in your face" response to his critics. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but it made sense to me that he would, given some of his music's harsh criticism. It's a shame, cause he was a hell of a writer. I can easily see his agent responding that way. Good call.

I honestly love Billy Joel he did so many different songs that are just great. I won an album of "Glass Houses" when I was younger and my brother got his album 52nd street. I didn't get a whole collection of him until just this past few years on cd's. Even my young 21 year old son likes his music. I never had the pleasure to see him perform live but I like his music.

For the Longest Time is interesting because he mixed together his own voice singing all the harmonies. Plus it's like an homage to The Four Seasons.

Billy's got a zillion hits. If you want rock, Big Shot or You May Be Right. A huge pop single -- Only The Good Die Young. Goodnight Saigon is about soldiers in Vietnam - will leave a lump in your throat. Relationship songs - She's Always A Woman, Honestly or She's Got A Way. To see his piano skills, New York State of Mind (Old Grey Whistle Test show live) and Prelude/Angry Young Man (live from Long Island, the same show as Scenes From An Italian Restaurant you reacted to).

A couple years ago Billy was on a late night tv show where he listed *his* choices for his top five favorite songs.
    1. Scenes from an Italian Restaurant.
    2. She's Right on Time.
    3. You May Be Right.
    4. And So It Goes.
    5. Vienna.
I'd love to see you react to any or all of those. I'm partial to 1, 4, and 5.

I saw Billy Joel live in 1978. He had a split-level stage with 2 grand pianos. He had so much energy, half way through the show he split his pants. And had to go change. Topnotch entertainer, songwriter, singer and musician.

Maller...my wife and I saw Billy Joel and Elton John back around 1999. They toured together, it was called The Piano Man Tour. Saw them once at the Palace of Auburn Hills ( where the Pistons play) and I think the other time was at the Silver Dome. They played for nearly 5 hrs, INCREDIBLE CONCERTS!
Cheers Mate, keep the music alive brother!

The one and only concert I attended was Elton John and Billy Joel, back in 1994, Atlanta. What a great experience! Everyone was nice, crowd was polite and well-behaved. At the mid point of the concert Elton started doing Billy's songs and Billy did Elton's songs. Worth every penny for the nose-bleed seats, too.

You said that there are so many good songs that it takes a long time to get to them all, but Billy Joel alone has so many good songs that it will take a long time just to get through all of his. So there are many good choices for what to do next from him, but I'm gonna recommend "New York State of Mind".

This record came out in 1980. There was Disco and Punk and New Wave and Metal all on the radio. Billy basically said it was all Rock and Roll.
