    I guess my main gripe with this game is that its release is the final nail in the coffin for 2nd ed, and now I won't be able to get any of the remaining sets I was unable to get before. That, and I liked being the overlord player.

    I prefer my board games to be 100% analog with just physical components. I have nothing against the app integration if the Publisher can support it forever. Also, I spend 10+ hours a day working in front of a computer, so when I play board games I want to disconnect.

      My group had a break from Gloomheaven for a couple of months because some people were away, then when we returned to it no one could remember the rules properly, and It took us long to learn it even the first time, and even then we could not agree on some rules ... so we just shelved it in frustration and never played it again.... and sadly never finished it ... so I welcome the app ...

  • @B0rghalRantipole

    Seeing how much of the game is handled by a machine - story elements, resource gathering, crafting, combat resolution, levelling up, proper rules reference - I think it's fair to ask the question when does a boardgame stop being a boardgame and become a videogame with a physical map... ? I don't think the review answered that with any points other than a flat "No", which is disappointing.
    If the app rolled dice and tracked enemy movement, would any physical stuff be still needed?
    To stretch it a bit further, would abandoning the bit where you move a piece of plastic over soem cardboard and instead giving each player a controller not lead to even more gameplay possibilities? Especially given that the cost of this is triple of something like Divinity Original SIn 2, which is an excellent 2-player dungeon crawler.

    • @blackdeath099
      @blackdeath099 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Really disappointed they don't address the price. For real, this isn't just a small detail. This is probably the most expensive retail boardgame FFG has ever released. For a channel that always was involved in social commentary, the analysis on how or why we're at this price point is severaly lacking. Review copy provided free of charge by the publisher says it all I guess.

    • @yamahkogribbis6212
      @yamahkogribbis6212 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@blackdeath099 I'm fairly certain they mention the price a half a dozen times. Maybe more? You'll have to decide for yourself if it's "worth it"... All they can do is give their impressions and acknowledge it's various characteristics. As with all games, some will believe the price is too high. The number of hours of enjoyment could be in the hundreds for certain groups, whereas others might become bored after less than two.

    • @yamahkogribbis6212
      @yamahkogribbis6212 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @walkerbetweenworld I didn't see a "gloss over." The price was mentioned several times. The viewer and or consumer must determine the value of the game for themselves. Would you have felt better off if they made an absolute statement on value, knowing full well that the value is different for different audiences? I'm not sure that is what I want as a viewer.
      I prefer what I got. An explanation of what to expect and the enjoyment they got from the game. With that, I am capable of making a decision on the value the game has to me. You are also capable.

    • @yamahkogribbis6212
      @yamahkogribbis6212 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @walkerbetweenworld the first question you want answered is "is it worth it"? Then they give you a summary of the game, components and rules and such, along with the actual price of the game. You want them to say, "it is worth IT" or "it is not worth IT" to which I would ask several questions.
      What type of gamer are you?
      Do you enjoy other games of this genre?
      Is this an art style you prefer?
      Is this game based on a subject in which you had previous interest?
      How much disposable income do you have?
      And on and on. I could think of 100 more questions that might help someone determine if it's "worth it" to them. As a reviewer, there's no way they can know your circumstances well enough to know if you'll find it to be "worth it".

    • @BenGreen1980
      @BenGreen1980 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there are physical components you need to interact with to play, it's a tabletop/board game. If there aren't any, it's a computer game.

    the game looks really fun, and i didn't have any of the hang-ups other folks seemed to have with this game... except the price-to-scenarios ratio. maybe that's an unfair metric by which to judge games (especially considering this one comes with a lot of fancy looking terrain stuffs), but it's one that has served me and my wallet fairly well.
    just a few comparisons to other games using their msrp:
    shadows of brimstone: US$120, 12 scenarios
    zombicide: $100, 10 scenarios
    dungeon degenerates: $80, 20 scenarios
    pandemic legacy: $50, 12 scenarios
    gloomhaven: $140, 90+ scenarios
    jaws of the lion: $50, 24 scenarios
    middara: $170, tons of scenarios
    descent 2: $60, ~30 (i think?) scenarios
    (i think all those prices are correct, or at least close)
    and then there's descent LotD: $175, 16 scenarios. oof even at a certain online retailer, it's still US$140. that's a lot of money for not a lot of missions. even if they're quite varied and fun and lovely, the price doesn't make sense compared to many of the (very high quality) competition, and even its own predecessor, unless you *really* want a lot of cardboard terrain. obviously this is all just my opinion, and i'm certainly not saying other folks can't think D: LotD is a good deal. (i hope they do!)
    i think you guys gave it a fair review and definitely made me want to play it... but only if someone else is buying lol.
    thanks for the vid, cheers!

    Great review! I really like how you two roll :) I have been waiting to see what the reviewers had to say on this game - your review is probably the best one I've seen so far - balanced, fair, and informative. Its price point in New Zealand is $320 - $350 which is a consideration but not a barrier - I pledged for the HeroQuest reprint which is a similar price - but I'm buying nostalgia with HeroQuest (I also have an OG copy of the game) as well as expansions and extras. I have been watching this game with interest - from FFG playthroughs, to comments on Facebook - its been interesting seeing how people are reacting to it. I enjoy Descent 2e and would love to see reprints of that - purely to complete my collection. I think FFG have tried something different and I think that's great - but I don't think I'm going to pick this game up - I need new socks too. Thanks again for a great review

    I honestly though all this time that the hate bombing on BGG was because they were forcing an app on a game that previously didn't needed it.
    Is the sexist hate on the game like... a thing? I'm on reddit and BGG a couple hours a day and i honestly haven't even seen that thing mentioned.
    It's even the first time i even know that the designer is a woman.

    • @NoPunIncluded
      @NoPunIncluded  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You know, people aren't exactly overt about this stuff. Nobody says "I hate this game because I hate women!" No one would pay attention. Therefore it would be ridiculous to assume that everyone who dislikes the look of this game (I say look because so far so few people played it), dislikes it for nasty reasons.
      But, you have to look at the disproportional amount of ire and anger at a game that seems cool and fun? Like, what's up? No one stated reason holds up because there's literally hundreds of examples in the past of these things not being issues.

    • @moisessandoval4240
      @moisessandoval4240 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@NoPunIncluded The internet is full of anonymous sexism/racism so i don't discard the possibility. Let's not forget the incredibly stupid Frosthaven controversy.
      And i know we've seen that hate in a lot of other products. We don't need to go that far, Masters of the Universe was universally hated for that exact same reason.
      What i'm trying to say is that maybe for me it was more obvious in those other examples (Masters of the universe, Star Wars, etc), but i don't discard that could be a reason, even though i think that the implementation of an obligatory app on a game that didn't have one it's one of the main reasons.
      I don't get the hate for the art, though. Looks amazing.

    • @NoPunIncluded

      @@NoPunIncluded Also apparently Destinies has been well received? The difference (i think) it's that Descent already had a huge fanbase.
      I don't think it's a 'PEOPLE HATE APPS ON GAMES', it's more of a 'I WANT THE SAME THING' (not saying that's a good mentality).
      If they made another Arcadia Quest with an obligatory app i guess the fanbase would be very vocal.
      Maybe not, IDK. I don't care about apps in games, i liked Mansions of Madness, but I know i would be very pissed if the third edition of Age of Steam needed an app to be functional, giving an example of a game i consider myself a fan.

I’ve played both this game and descent 2nd edition and I feel that they’re so different that it’s honestly pretty hard to compare them. That being said, I’d way rather play this game. Also, if you look at the VAST majority of negative reviews on BGG, you’ll find that it pretty much just comes down to app hesitancy and price (from people who have not played or own the game). If it were really taste, I think you’d be hearing less gushing from people who have actually played it.

    The review said "it doesn't just feel like a videogame" but so much of it was about how the app takes care of almost all bookkeeping, and most of the comments on the terrain and components are "they indicate something's there, but the app gives you actual information (whether it be raised terrain, a unique piece, or a creature type)."
    So... what are all those extremely expensive physical components actually DOING? Even in your own review, it mostly sounds like they're just stand-ins for things that need to be confirmed in the app. The physical aspect of the game very much sounds like a companion to the app, not the other way around, and I have to wonder why that's worth $175 versus the cost of just blending the rest into the software and selling it for the price of an indie PC RPG instead.

    We tabled this for the first time yesterday. I picked it up secondhand for about 30% of MSRP but a scathing review from SUSD made it seem like a total bore to play to it just sat on my shelf for the last 6 months. I saw your video yesterday and we decided to give it a go. We had a fantastic time. No -it's not gloomhaven, and as someone who was utterly disappointed by gloomhaven that's fantastic. It's honestly a lot closer to what I hoped Gloomhaven would be - albeit through one quest. It's not a heavy game, but played with the right mindset there are definitely interesting tactical decisions to be made (at least on heroic difficulty - we may bump to Warfare). Given that SUSD complained heavily about the move- hit twice pattern - I'm guessing they wouldn't care much for games like Zombicide either.
    The writing is simultaneously competent and terrible in the funniest way - insert Vaerix jumping into a conversation 5 minutes too late. If you want a serious dark tale with award winning novel writing, you won't find it here, but if you want to come up with ridiculous voices for each of the characters and take turns trying to voice act them all, you can have an amazingly funny time. The skill checks combine with the narrative and gear collection to really give a pretty authentic D&D-light sort of feel to everything that scratches the itch while regulating DM duties to an app so the players can focus on the game.
    Despite its flaws, the app is a brilliant addition. I understand some people may have reservations but the way it handles book keeping and prevents unnecessary components like health markers is a very VERY welcome addition. I've started to loathe component overload in games, and Descent is very streamlined in that regard. It could be better if they tracked character placement in the app as well as status, but I can forgive that.
    It might not crack my top 10, but it will definitely be getting more plays.

    I'll be honest, it feels like when an app is this completely integrated into a board game, with tons of scripted dialogue and to the point where it looks like you're even moving your character and doing combat in the app, you might as well just go play a video game. To me the appeal of TTRPGs over video game RPGs is the improvisational potential of something like DnD that VGRPGs just can't do. If you have all that running through an app, you lose all of that flexibility, and you still have to deal with the fiddlyness and clutter of having a bunch of board game components to keep track of. I dunno. Just not for me I guess.

    • @abnercliff9624

      Journeys in middle earth is much better, all the app does is the story, map, threat, upgrades, and enemy stats. Everything else is on the board

    • @thecardboarddungeon8770
      @thecardboarddungeon8770 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don’t track character movement in the app at all, and combat is a combination of out-of-app decision making (roll die, activate abilities from weapon or other cards, this is all handled with game components) and inputting the number of successes and any conditions your attack inflicts into the app. Then the app does some behind the scenes RNG for the enemy defense and determines how much damage you inflicted. Similarly, for enemy attacks, the app just shows you who is being attacked, the move/damage stats and any additional rules. You make a defense roll and activate any abilities or effects, determine the amount of damage your hero takes and register that on your health disk.
      There is no “playing the game entirely on the app like a videogame” in Descent.

    • @orlandonerz2999
      @orlandonerz2999 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, there has always been dialogue and narration in Descent. It was just in the Rulebook and the dungeon master read it. So transferring that to the app as well as the set-up makes a lot of sense. The main thing that drives these games is planning with your companions, exploring the dungeon, bombing that minis off the table, celebrate together. Playing a game like this solo - I agree: play a video game instead.

    My main curiosity, it seems much of the action happens on the app. How does that work with multiple players. Do you all have to crowd around one part of the table to read cut scenes and for every combat action? Do you pass the app and then one person looks at/interacts with it while everyone else waits to find out what happened? Ive never played mansions of madness or journeys in middle earth for context. Feels like I’d only want to play this solo but maybe I’m overestimating the importance of looking at the iPad?

      Here my two cents. I play with a group of four people, and I’m fortunate to have a large TV hanging on the wall by my game table where we cast the app. I’m the only person in the group that interacts with the app, everyone else just plays and can see what’s going on via the TV. I will also add, that I feel that the players don’t even really need to see what is going on, you could just tell them. You really could put the app behind a GM screen and play it in the fashion of a table top RPG where the GM controls the game using the app and everyone else can experience the game without any screen interaction at all.

    App assisted games reminds me of VHS board games from the 80s and 90s. What happens if the app stops being maintained by its Devs? What if the company goes out of business? What if the app gets pulled from the App stores? What happens if the medium of apps dies completely for some new thing entirely like, I dunno, chips implanted in our brains or something? Can you still play the game 30 years from now if the app no longer exists? This very question is why I decided to give away my copy of Destinies.

      Do you play any legacy games? Have you had the pleasure of enjoying Pandemic Legacy Season 1? There are some truly wonderful board gaming experiences that, by design, can only be enjoyed a limited number of times. And to me, that enjoyment factor is what I'm paying for. Descent is a hefty price tag, but I'm not making an investment in the future worthiness of this game. I'm buying entertainment for today. And if I get $175 of enjoyment with friends out of this, then it really doesn't bother me if the app we to spontaneously combust in (checks calendar)... forty years.

    Thanks for the great review. I'm not sure dunking on the older artists is a great look either. FFG pays like $50 an illustration so "dungeons and dishwater" isn't a great take. Not to mention, if you are making the flagship dungeon crawler (which I'd argue Descent 1st and 2nd were) going with your standard fantasy fare with some unique takes makes a lot of sense. I don't love the new art but I can get over it. I actually love the app inclusion in Descent's Road to Legend. The app inclusion here feels pretty heavy handed but I'd have to play it myself to know for sure (which hopefully I'll get a chance to at some point).

    Still didn’t see a distinct reason to have 3d terrain in this game. This is two reviews now(by different channels) that didn’t talk about how the 3D terrain impacts gameplay.

    This is a very, very good review not just because I needed a little confirmation bias after watching Tom Vassals Dice tower review but because its super thorough. I bought this game without even hesitating because I love dungeon crawlers, fantasy flight and app driven games. I like games essentially. But when I heard this was mansions of madness meets journeys in middle earth with a much more developed app I was pretty much "Yes please". I haven't played the game yet its still sitting on my shelf but my wife and I are very stoked after watching your review and washing away that Dice Tower review taste ie; tell me what i want to hear. Thank you. I am little discouraged by that bit surrounding the rules at the end. It's all small potatoes to me I look forward to playing thanks again for the review. PS: I like the art alot I dont get the haters at all on that.

    The tone in this one was a lot more patronizing than I expected.

      Why does it feel like a paid review exactly?

    I haven't played the game, but if it's even half as fun as this video, it's a win. :p
    It's nice when the algorithm actually recommends something good for me.

    How about the setup time?
    Too much app integration in this game. They could just make it video game

    It looks cool for sure and don’t really care here or there for the app - but for $180 I can’t see buying it to basically pay for the development of said app and with 3D printing options out there and how phenomenal it’s become, cardboard paper terrain seems like a beginning tier in a Kickstarter project rather than an all-in idea.
