We need to allow in the social media crowd. Everyone is so worried about someone videoing their coins. Coin shows need to evolve. Thursday to Sunday evening. Have entertainment etc etc.

I’d say make them Saturday and Sunday only, if that helps cut down on cost for marketing or entertainment events. But Like the reoccurring gun shows actually have dealers stay to the very end. Don’t know how many times I’ve hit a gun show the last few hours and bought several new toys. Know the avg guy working all week may want yo sleep in a little on Saturday or may want something to do right after church on Sunday. I know it’s a tough business to be in but same way it is frustrating with bank lobby’s closing so early just as most get off work, it is similar trying to make these events you want to attend around all the family stuff and work. We’re not all fortunate to be self employed. I hope to get back to that again someday but for now I’m a corporate worker.

My main problem is that most dealers seem to think they can get away with charging 125-150% of online / auction comps.

yeah well every single buyer thinks they deserve to offer 10% back of Greysheet wholesale on every single coin.
Not accounting all the time, money and other investments it takes for that dealer to offer that coin. Just to hopefully make 5$.

@@TheMediaMattic, I’m only a collector, not a dealer. But I don’t begrudge dealers making a living. Like coins themselves, there are two sides to everything. And no one wants to be / feel cheated - buyers OR sellers! I think the video touched on why sellers have invested more time and money and thus deserve better deals at times.

I'm fortunate to live in a area with a lot of coin shows nearby. One thing I will say is that you do wind up seeing the same dealers over and over again and they just don't have a lot of fresh inventory. But regardless, I really enjoy going to shows just for the experience of being there.

Nothing beats getting out and seeing things in person. You’ll discover things you would never know to search online for otherwise.

I started out with eBay and auctions but now find dealers to be less expensive. Pay cash and no credit card fees, buyers premiums, shipping and sales tax. Even though the dealer price is higher than the hammer price, it still ends up being cheaper after all of the other costs are added into the hammer.

    • @HJohn-xn9ub

I can see your point. But at the same time, if I’m NOT collecting American coins, but rarer ancients or coins from the Middle Ages or specific world coins, I’m probably not going to find them at my LCS! I probably have to find those rarities online instead.
I used to buy American coins. But then I discovered that I could buy a 700 year old Spanish silver coin in MS65 and a 300 year old Spanish silver coin in MS65 and a 100 year old Spanish silver coin in MS65 - all three combined! - for LESS money than a single Isabella quarter in MS65!!!
American coins and currency are so expensive because that’s the demand. And that’s fine. Few people know more than 248 years of American history - if that. And I’m happy buying older, more obscure stuff. But it’s just harder to find. So, I’m still going to have to use online and auction sources.

As a collector and not a dealer, the expense of driving for hours, getting a room, and eating is way too much, and then you may not even find the coin you need or it's way over priced. I'll just deal with eBay and whatnot until our annual coin show comes to town.

I am going to be honest, as someone new to this whole thing I don't get a very friendly vibe from most of the coin dealers I see on TH-cam, very few would make me want to go out to a show and see them. I would say more but I won't.

    • @UKDark_Mark
      @UKDark_Mark 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

From experience, unfortunately many dealers are no friendlier in person. Then there’s high prices, dealers leaving early, not taking cards for payment, being suspicious and showing a perceived lack of interest in you if you’re not immediately ‘spend spend spend’. I am fortunate enough to travel for work and senior enough to travel for work…. when I want (within reason). If I can I will match a trip with a coin show event so I’ve been to a number across the globe over the years, both pre and post pandemic. They ALL need to completely change the model - gear up to attract new people, invite social media content creators, local news / press and hold events to attract families. And get sponsorship from mints. Sorry - long reply! 👍

A lot of the shows I have went to have 60 + year old guys that are there more to socialize with their good ole boys club then actually sell. They act like your bothering them if you ask them anything, which I get if a ton of people come up wanting them to evaluate pocket change, but then someone like me who actually has a good amount to spend isn't even acknowledged. Also so many wanting the PCGS price guide prices even though none have sold for that. On the dealer side I get that it is hard to compete now a days because overhead is so high but you are competing with hundreds that have almost no overhead.

Coin shows are nice in the fact that you can handle the coins that you may want to buy. The one major downside of coin shows can be interacting with dealers that act like they don't want to be there, why do something if you don't like it. The other issue is the expense of travel, parking, and possibly a hotel, this can very easily eat away at the budget that could be used to buy a higher quality specimen. Some show promoters also seem to lack skills when it comes to getting word of the show out, I've received flyers for shows the day after it happened, why not use email, it's much faster and cheaper than snail mail. A live auction at the end of the last day might also encourage dealers to stick around till the end of the show, this might even provide a chance to pick up a good deal as well.

All fair points with pluses and minuses and you can see both sides.
The one exception for me is as you said Drew the dealer to dealer buying. It's a true "worst kept secret" of shows that alot of the "more interesting/expensive" are exchanged by dealers.
The problems with this are two fold: the first being "hey the dealer is here to make money" but all of these coins that are being sold between dealers are high value popular ones for the most part (limited exception for wholesale buying). The second is the justification that "hey they are buying it for a client". The problem here is that the whole point of a coin show is to have people SHOW UP IN PERSON. If the coins are all gone by the time the show is open to the public, what would be the point? Everyone should just talk to their dealer and they can all exchange amongst themselves.
As always appreciate the videos! Keep up the great work!

Ebay.....yikes...haven't bought a coin there in years. Sellers have no idea what a greysheet is...ridiculous prices asked. Plus ebay nails you right away on sales tax, which makes me a lot less competitive having to factor California's insane sales tax on coins. Heritage...same thing PLUS a 20% buyers fee

I went to my very first coin show this past spring. I was surprised at how pricey the coins were. They were priced way over Redbook. The other issue I noticed is how they ignore female collectors. Ignoring female collectors is a big mistake. Women have money. The dealer who is respectful toward the women who come up to their booth are the ones who will get the money. Even in this episode I noticed you continually made references to "dads" "guys" and "sons". Never once did you refer to a collector as "mom", "woman" or "daughter". Dealers are missing out on a sizable slice of the market by ignoring female collectors.

It's a bunch of old white male maga types catering to other old white male maga types and they don't care about anyone else and that's why the business is suffering. While I generally like these guys they made a comment in a video a week or so ago that stated the one coin show they went to they said the Lord's Prayer there and also did the pledge of allegiance and basically insinuated that anyone that did that must be trustworthy and by that virtue if you didn't do that it meant you were basically scum. That did not sit right with me.

    Why are coin shows dying?
More reasons why, and I hate to say it but we need to stop being negative when we talk about the hobby and insead promote the hobby.
-new collectors are not educated and getting ripped off, and they quit collecting.
-No new younger dealers entering the shows cost too much. Old dealers dying off.
-Dealers are too expensive now and will only sell to other dealers at a good price like bid/ graysheet. It's discouraging knowing you overpaid for a coin and they don't want to do it over and over again
-Same old coins at smaller shows, nothing new
-needing to pay to get into a show.. should be free to the public, all shows large and small.
-the economy sucks right now. Inflation is up public just can't afford it. They just don't have the extra money for collectibles.
-generally, the public is treated like crap and if that is the case they just won't show. I have talked to so many grumpy dealers it crazy.

Great video, some of my favorite memories growing up took place at the ISNA annual show here in Indianapolis. The dealers showed respect for my obsession compared to other kids my age, say, in school would brush aside. At my first show I was put in touch with Lost Dutchman Rare Coin & Gold and recently I've enjoyed going down there and donating small goody bags of buffalos and wheat cents or whatnot to pass on to the future generation of young collectors. Not all kids are fortunate enough to have supportive enough family members to dedicate their time and money to take them to shows, so I like to think on the chances those same kids get to visit my LCS, they're greeted with a smile and a small bag of coins to brighten their day.
It's been over 10 years since I last attended a coin show, mostly due to ups and downs in interest to the hobby. Your channel and others over the past few months have inspired me to be more active in the coin collecting community and I plan on attending the next major coin show in my area. Thanks again for the watch and God bless.

I went to my first coin show the Chicago ANA earlier this month. I both liked it and was a bit disappointed. I could only go there for one day. That didn’t feel like enough time looking for needles in a haystack. I was especially looking for a high quality widow’s mite. I didn’t find one even though I had money burning a hole in my pocket. I ended up finding one online later this month. (Though it also could have taken me many more months or years to find “the one” for my collection.) [I bought it raw / unslabbed. But the Paleo-Hebrew is legible on the reverse, so when I send it in for grading, I’m sure it will come back Ch XF or hopefully AU - but certainly higher than my minimum desired grade - Ch VF. But I was buying it for the legibility of the inscriptions.] So I was disappointed that I didn’t buy anything at the show. It cost more to drive (with disgusting Illinois tolls), pay for gas, pay for parking, pay the entrance fee, etc. etc. But I was only able to go because it was in Chicago. I can’t go to Oklahoma City or wherever else they are having it for the next two years. So I can only go to my second coin show three years from now! Ugh!!

I think one of the things that hurts local coin shows the most are the costs involved with putting on a show. That goes from rental of the facility to providing security and everything in between. I personally don’t mind paying a fee to get in, if it means the show can be in a better location and have enhanced security.

I don’t know how to solve the coin show issues. I love them. So cool to see so much variety. Dealers have big expenses, hotel, food, gas, table fees etc. my experience is that most dealers want %125 of eBay comps. As a buyer, I know there are fees, so the max I should pay is 90% of online if I am a cash buyer. How do we bridge that gap?

I just stopped by a coin show yesterday in a larger city I was traveling through and the show was so small not even 10 vendors and not even that many customers at least at the very start. I didn't stay long, but one of the dealers had some rare bullion coins with great eye appeal, I didn't know the going prices of them at the time but he was asking very close to melt so I bought them without question and without any haggling on price, had no idea one of them's market value is 3x what I paid. There are great finds everywhere, but it was little sad seeing the effort the dealers who did attend put into it and so few customers showing up.

I love coin shows! I believe that major shows will slowly adapt, change and grow and will easily compete with the many online options. However I worry for small local shows. Seems like most have not changed in many years and they do not do much to bring in a younger crowd. There is a lot of young coin collectors out there but in todays fast pace world a young coin collector can easily blow through all their money in a high energy whatnot auction the day before the dead silent coin show at the fire hull full of old men.

As I mentioned on Daniel’s video, I am newer to numismatics but seriously am already considering stepping away. Drew, I’ve chat with you before at the shows. I asked what are we doing to interest newer younger collectors to keep it going. I also ask often what one feels about buying good graded coins as a good investment. Wasn’t too pleased with various answers I’ve gotten. See I want to know if I am willing to drop good money on valuable coins that they have a future and will appreciate over time. If you feel it is just to fix a quick itch feeling good about what you acquired, that will grow old quick for most. “The House” should not always win! This should be a fun hobby but at the same time allow some confidence in the collector that their investment in this hobby will sustain, if not how will any one keep interest. Also, as I mentioned on Daniel’s channel, I’ve been attending most all the shows around the Houston area for couple years now to pursue my interest and acquire coins. Unfortunately it always seems the shows are more of a dealer-to-dealer event. By the time the working class like myself can get there on Saturday, everyone is shutting down and leaving early. I am trying to stay pumped and into it, but will say it has been discouraging to say the least. I was really looking forward to and hoping to attend the Houston Summer show at the fellowship hall, starring at the flyer on my wall since last show, but I officially skipped it this time. Was my first time missing a local show after a couple years. Just felt by the time I’d drive across town from the clear lake area, many would likely be wrapping up like I experienced before. If I could get a commitment on the flyer or coin zip that dealers will be there until the end, I may start attending again and drag my Son’s, their friends and any possible to join me like I usually do. For now, I may just mostly stack bullion with online orders or hit a shop a bit here and there like I did recently with CL at Royal, after attempting to attend the Bellair show that suddenly cancelled and didn’t find out until driving there. Maybe soon I’ll get back to finishing this CC Graded Morgan set or maybe I’ll sell it off soon, we’ll see. For now you keep up the great work and grow this community and get these shows to have some consistency.

Cant share my opinion on coin shows in the UK as I don't go, there is nothing quite like visiting a coin shop but a local dealer of mine has put me off wanting to make the effort to travel, always asking way above any book and recent sale prices while always wanting to pay ridiculously below, there is just no fair balance, I now much prefer to shop online.

A word to the wise if you are selling at a coin show........ Bypass and just ignore the tables/dealers set up at the entrance doors with the big "BUYING" banners hanging everywhere. Without fail these are opportunistic leaches ready and willing to lowball your coins and flat rip you off given the chance. ALWAYS do your own homework and have a good idea of value first. At a Tulsa regional show last year I let such a dealer look at a small gold collection I was considering selling. Long story short, I ended up dealing on 3/4 of the collection for an offer well over TWICE what the front door dealer offered for the entire collection. People like this will not only help give a show a bad reputation, but damage the overall hobby as well. Their nasty attitude when you walk away does nothing to improve your shows reputation either.

down side of coin shows for me.....if I want to find something big, that means I'm carrying a lot of cash...most dealers don't want credit cards or checks. And big shows are primarily endless tables of slabs !! What I like about smaller shows...can often find more dealers dealing in raw "collector" coins.

  • @CAPNDill

I can see both sides to the argument on this question. For me at least, I think shows are thriving as long as the community supports them. With that being said, they also have to be maintained to a certain extent like free parking, free entry, etc. because being able to just come and look at everything and not buy anything shouldn’t cost anything worse case scenario. Also, for me coin shows aren’t about buying coins mainly. They’re also about leaving your house and meeting new dealers or collectors and being social and expanding the hobby. Also learning is a big thing in this hobby. Maybe you don’t buy something. That’s fine. But if you walk out with some newfound knowledge then that’s still a win. It’s easier to do all that face to face rather than a username handle on eBay. Overall, I think shows are thriving and will continue to grow as long as we support them.

Lack of parking. Circled lot 15 minutes with vehicles behind me.

Coin dealers and bullion traders make very little margains for the most part. The attitude is they have to move product fast for a small profit.

I find coin shows really interesting. I get to see things that I don't often see, sometimes in really special grades. I would miss coin shows if they ceased to exist.

I really like coin shows. Then, the coins I want are for show not for sale. It's called bait and switch.

AI Boom going on. I’m getting low Mintages. Under 7,500,000 mintage year/date. 1810-1920. Variety types. VG better. Get a lot for $10.00 each. Throw them in a labeled fireproof bag. Demand for PCGS top pop/currency autos dry up by January.

Been hearing "coin shows are dying" and "coin collecting is dying" for 20 years
Neither are and frankly as someone who's watched your content for years now, you're better than this hacky topic

The point is, coin collecting has changed and become more dynamic in its approach to feeding the collectors what they need. It's different, but that doesn't mean it's dying. We were trying to approach the question and give rationale to both sides of an argument. Thanks for watching. A topic many people talk about.

$10 to get in the door. $10 to $20 parking. Food is expensive like going to the ballpark. Dealers treat the public like they are a retail customer partially because they have to collect sales tax for thirsty state taxing entities and because they think they can. Why get robbed going out the door to your car? I am so done with this nonsense. I buy on ebay or from my LCS who can call Stacks and get me anything I want for a dealer price without sales tax. I cannot relate to this channel.

@@MarcHasaraMarcHasara you are definitely going to the wrong coin shows. Shows by me in expensive NY are free admission and free parking. Big regional coin shows in a city center are whole different animal.

Curious where the coin show was where you experienced those prices just for parking and entry and food?

I'm in the DFW metro area and enjoy going to the local shows. Now the bad news; this is going to be politically incorrect. What I see are a bunch of old white guys, same guys month after month, many of whom look like they haven't bathed in a while. Also, I get a lot ot the Trump, guns, survivalist vibe, which I don't care for. But, on the whole, I enjoy the experience, so I'll keep going.

On average I do way way better with online auctions or calling coin shops working a deal, coin shows around me never have the juice. The old ways are over.
