DMC 4 SE Vergil cutscenes > DMC 3 light novel vol 1, 2 > DMC 3 > DMC 1 > DMC Anime (canon) > DMC 2 > DMC 4 > DMC 5 light novel : before of the nightmare > DMC 5
This might just be it guys
What about the DMC4 light novels?
I think the main issue that everyone is having with the Devil May Cry timeline change is that Dante's return from hell isn't explained and few people know there is a DMC5 Novel that answers how that happened.
He basically said that DMC2 doesn't exist. His message was coded
Geryon Basically that. He completely talked around the question. Itsuno doesn’t care about DMC2 and is just not directly knowledging it in the series ever again
No he didn't. Seriously, the novel exists you know? DMCV has a lot of things that isn't possible without the novel, which directly references DMC2.
Not true, DMC2 characters are featured quite prominently in the prequel novel.
Geryon nope, DmC 2 is very cannon. Dante goes to hell.
This taste.... the taste of a LIAR!
It makes more logistical sense because at the begining of DMC 4 Nero says about Dante. "The guy just came from hell, he's got to hit a couple of tourist sites". In order for that line to work, 4 would have to come after 2.
Nero just says that because he believes Dante to be a demon from the underworld, he had no basis for that statement outside of him being a demon so there's no reason for that single line to cause a timeline shift.
Nero didn't even know who Dante was. He even asked who Dante in his confrontation with Credo.
He doesn’t know Dante at all, it’s a line he said out of coincidence
@@Shuyin128MK4 yeah that makes sense.
Thank you Matt Walker I accepted devil may cry chronology timeline 3, 1, 2, 4, 5
The game's plot coherency makes a lot more sense now, their timeline's as screwed as Fox's X-Men. Whoever wrote DMC3 shouldve been in charge.
Honestly, though, 2 is such a... Let's forget how we feel about the game - and remember that so much of that game is isolated from everything else in the series. Nothing in that game is dependent on fitting in any particular place in the story except definitely some time after 3 and 1. Hell, if we look at how Dante is portrayed, and the fact that we don't see any other characters from 1 (and none of 2's characters appear elsewhere) we could almost make the argument that that isn't even the same Dante. Kinda like telling different stories of Dracula. Honestly, if it was me, I'd probably just remove the game from a canon timeline entirely, but I think it's a point of bruised pride.
@@Croecho
The devil trigger inconsistencies is what really bothers (triggers?) me.
Problem. The guy who made 3, was in charge and has been since 3
@@Americanbadashh
In terms of game design/direction yes, but I doubt he wrote the script for 3 since 4 and 5 play out like a mess in comparison.
DMC 2, go! You're just dead weight!
Could just consider 2 as dante going through a phase after mallet island and the anime series. After that he goes back to his old personality in 4 and 5
don't forget a certain prologue novel for dmc2 that features Dante entering a parallel world where Mundus got him and Vergil died leading a Rebellion acompanied by Phantom, Griffon, a Shadow and other demons from DMC1 in human form (!) he helps said demons against Mundus but has to kill multiple Trishs in that world and the demons that help Dante perish too...
If you skip ten seconds that’s how king crimson works
If you pause it, that's how Za warudo works.
If you watch it at a faster speed, that's how Made in Heaven works.
If you restart from the beginning, that's how bites the dust works
U guys are cultured
If you watched it in an alternate account, that's how Reference works.
15 second skip button!? Wtf
BiggyJ right
So DMC2 remake ? 😉😉
So Does Lucia From Devil May Cry 2 Still Exist?
Yeah, she's featured quite prominently in the prequel novel. In fact they gave a couple of chapters to DMC2 characters.
Yeah, i wanted to see her in action again in a possible DLC for DMC 5.
@@derrickmun2215 that sounds Awesome!!
@@Polar_Fighter IF DMC 5 was a sucess, it's likely a DLC will happen.
She hasn’t even been mentioned in any other game , and I really doubt they will. It would take someone other than Itsuno being in charge because he clearly just wants everyone to forget DMC2
The one who asked the question didn't look pleased with the so called 'Answer'
I always thought this was the proper timeline anyway. It seemed weird for 2 to take place after 4 anyway. (I know the series wasn't developed in chronological order but...) Dante looks older in 4 than in 2 so it just seemed natural for 4 to have been the farthest in the timeline. Plus, he's cooler, older, has more wisdom, and seems more grounded. Just feels right. Glad to know that my own personal thought for the timeline is now right. Huh, even though I was wrong, I'm still right... so this is what it feels like to be my mother.
Hahahaha nice
I thought the same mate, he looks younger
I disagree in various renders for Dante in 2 he looks far more mature he is just clean shaven. Not too mention Dante's portrayal and powers in DMC2 makes him seem far more powerful than he was in DMC4. I honestly think this change was a mistake.
How is nobody talking about Dante's depressing change in personality in DMC 2 if that game is set before DMC 4. Like wtf!
Well you could say that he’s unhappy because everyone in his family is dead in 2 and then in 4 he figures out he has a nephew so he gets to his more happy personality.
Still doesn't explain Sparda dying 2000 years before Virgil and Dante start their adventures...
Short version, it doesn't matter. Dmc2 is a condensed story with a take on a beloved character that everyone dislikes and an ending that isn't touched upon by all the other games. Just ignore it
Sarcastic Duck When the other games don’t acknowledge it, its place in the timeline doesn’t matter. Most importantly Itsuno obviously just doesn’t like DMC2 and isn’t going to go out of his way to reference it again
Short answer: vergil is in the game so it makes no sense for the series to end on 2
I’m going to assume 2 doesn’t happen because that has nothing to do with the rest of the story
of course it could never been place on the time line even before as we all put it at the end
This is the correct approach
what they should do is a DMC2 remake. this time a better story.
He spoke for 3 minutes but didn’t even explain anything. I mean wtf was that
Jack Bauer yeah I was going to say completely unsatisfactory. All we found out was the guy wanted it changed but not why he wanted the change? I'm assuming he wanted Dante's personality a certain way so Dmc3. Then dmc1 was already there. 2 still makes no sense since Dante doesn't joke around or anything. Then in 4 he clowns around a lot and 5 he's the same but better
Dark Exsphere you have to read the DMC 2 novel for 2 to make sense
I think he was struggling to find a tactful way to say “Itsuno doesn’t like DMC2 and moving stuff around in the timeline prevents us from acknowledging it anymore than we have to”
@@DarkExsphere A tactful way of saying that the way DMC5 ends doesn't make sense for it to occur before DMC 2. It's also the only way they can pull Dante into a game that takes place so soon after DMC4. Basically..."let's not address it."
Honestly, I take my Devil May Cry like I take my Mad Max. It doesn't matter to me what happens to the hero at the end. We can assume he'll be back.
he didn't explain anything...
Short answer, it made more sense with 5. But he still didn't explain why with DMC 5, 4 had to be after 2
@@jjdude00
He did, the idea is that Dante's personality in 2 is closest to 1 out of all of the games, so when they decided to make 5 it wouldn't make sense for 2 to be between 4 and 5 in regards of Dante's personality; so they just now changed the timeline so 2 comes between 1 and 4.
@@L251125 yea actually that does make sense. When Dante rode into hell at the end of 2 he came out with a sense of humor.
@@jjdude00
The fan theory for years has been that Dante is stoic in 2 because he's sad he killed Nelo Angelo (Vergil) in 1.
So the general idea is:
- He is a jokester in 3 because he is young and snarky.
- He is less jokey but still kind of a goof in 1, but more matured and that definitely fits with the end of 3.
- In 2 he is more serious and more business-like because he is sad for Vergil.
- In 4 he learned to move on and became a goof again (maybe to deal with the pain (? ).
- And in 5 he's still similar to 4 but gets serious when dealing with Vergil until the end of the game.
I would have said the same thing the guy answering the question... but above all THANK YOU 😩
Logistical sense? What is that supposed to mean?
It would still work with original timeline with DMC2 after DMC4 and DMC5 after DMC2!
No cuz in 4 Dante gave Nero permission to work with his agency and in 2 there was no such thing plus no sight of Trish nor lady dmc 2 should just vanish imo its a mistake it just doesn't feel right
Ps in 2 Dante was gruffed and in 4 he was wack he can't go from Dat being wacky in 4 to being emo in 2 then going wacky in 5 again so changing the time line make more sense
@@nxstationgames8411 The permission is probably Morrison's connection to get Demon-slaying contract like Lady and Trish have. One can argue that in DmC2, Nero is doing another contract in another city. Beside if you using Lady and Trish appearence in game as argument then why Lady didn't appear in DmC1 if DmC3 before DmC1? or why Lucia didn't appear in DmC4 or DmC5? As you said, it just doesn't fell right.
Dante's personality is also not a problem here because Capcom should address this change in DmC3, DmC1, and/or DmC: The Animated Series in the proposed timeline. They didn't do that and still put DmC2 after DmC 1 and DmC: The Animated Series.
@@ardiprawiro7321 I'm not arguing I just said what the producer said its a personality development matter
@@nxstationgames8411 I'm sorry if I sound like arguing, I never have a 'real' problem with the proposed timeline. It's just his answer is not satisfying at all. Just give me Lucia in the next game and I'm happy.
Since we're talking about timelines. In what timeline did Morrison become black since he was white in the anime. :/
Maybe morrison is a Demon, they can change bodies 🤔
Why would that make you sad?
so how dante escape hell in dmc 2
He walked out.
I remembered he said he saw a tunnel or portal and walk through it
Read DMC 5 - Before The Nightmare
Dante mentions that he was wandering around the demon world when a portal just appeared, which apparently is a normal thing for portals to show up that lead to port cities (according to Dante).
So Dante and Vergil could find a random portal in order to return to the human world again, but again it's random.
The same way vergil did
@@Shuyin128MK4 Or with the Yamato, if they wanted
I kind of feel like DMC 5 is repeating DMC 2 in a way. Although I haven't played DMC 2 in like a decade, so I can't recollect all of my memories of it but Dante, in DMC 5, did reminisce on his adventure in DMC 2 during gameplay. Anyway, my main point is both endings are similar...Dante rides to hell with no with no intent of return *a tear rolls down cheek*
Thanks for the confirmation
So about Lucia from DMC 2 then? We didn’t see her in DMC 5 and how did Dante get out of hell after DMC 2...?
Once we’re in hell, we can’t get out...that’s what happened to Vergil at the end of DMC 3, to Dante at the end of DMC 2 and to both Dante and Vergil at the end of DMC 5...
Once they’re in the underworld, they can’t come back...
Yet, both of them got out and got back stuck in there?
Intell Oyell
That’s what the game tells us but we both know that the “stuck in hell” and “can’t get back” is just a joke now...like whatever happens...a tower emerges from the underworld or a portal opens and the twins are back again....
I think that Devil May Cry 6 might be another sequel...to explain what happened between DMC 2 and 4
You guys must haven't read dmc5 nightmare novel book it explains how dante escapes from hell in dmc2
So it’s 3,1, anime, 2,4,5 right? What about the novels I keep seeing people talking about?
The novels work between games like the anime did, there are a number of years between each game so a lot of things can happen in those gaps
the anime and novels are the stories that happen in those gaps
Shuyin178 What are the novels called? I tried to search for them before but all I got were mangas. Are the mangas the novels?
@@thedregon4535 also curious
If you include the novels it would be DMC novel 1, DMC3 Manga, DMC3,DMC1, DMC anime, DMC novel 2, DMC 2, DMC4,DMC5 Novel , and DMC5
You could get away with that order 3,1,2,4,5 cause it all still in context
true its not like 2 messed up anything really it was just a side thing like i dont see how people are upset as 2 was never offically put on the timeline as no one knew where it went.
3 of course is the beginning as lady and dante first met and in 1 she didn't re appear as only dante was hired by trish to go to a mysterious island and since lady wasnt a part of his buisness he didnt tell her anything. 2 well we knew nothing of when it took place. having 4 after make sense as dante gathered up trish and lady decding to work with them then meeting nero
Why not just remake Dmc 2 and just erase the original from the cannon story 🤷🏽♂️
So what happened to Lucia? Where is she? Does she even exist in this new timeline?
Not new timeline it's the same timeline, but lucia isn't featured in the games anymore. It's just put in order now how it should've been from the begining
thanks man! anyways I would love to see her back in DMC in the near future if the series will continue of course.
in the DMC5 prequel novel Dante goes back to the island from DMC2 to fight a demon and while he was there he talked with Matier and Lucia
Go read the Devil May Cry 5 Before The Nightmare Novel it explains how Dante escape from Hell
He explained why DMC3 was before DMC1 but not why DMC2 is now before DMC4
So... is it okay if i just skip 2? Just play 3,1,animated series,4,5?
Wow he explained absolutely nothing. Great.
So devil may cry 2 is canon then how did he get out of the underworld and where is Lucia in the timeline and how come she has never showed up.
Devil May Cry: Before The Nightmare
The novel explains everything.
He walks out a tunnel or portal and came back. Many years later and just before the events of dmc5, he went back to the same island where dmc2 take place and help Lucia fight a demon which is the right hand man of the last boss of dmc2 and when the demon says he cannot beat Dante, he turned into Dante devil arms which is known as balrog in dmc5.
Argosax had a right hand man? Well that would explain where Balrog came from at least.
@@phoenixchampion7 yeah but based on translation you can also call it rivals
I honestly don't blame him for basically saying dmc2 does not exist
I'm gonna keep pretending like DMC 2 is non canon since it really has no relevance to the rest of the series anyways. The Story is just alot neater that way
So, is it ever explained how Dante came back?
Honestly they could’ve just announced 2 as non-canon and replaced that time period with the events of the anime. Both the story and the game itself are entirely inconsequential to the rest of the series.
I think the anime is sort-of-canon as the little girl from the anime calls Dante during the game’s story and while Morrison looks different, there are data logs in the game detailing some of the events from the anime
DMC 2's Dante is still the most badass.
alarsenal10 DMC5’s Sin Devil Trigger disagrees
STILL a better Dante than that wannabe from Ninja Theory's 2013 DMC
Dante the Hedgehog
I think 5's Dante takes that title now.
I mean he jabbed himself in the chest with his own sword and absorbed Sparda's power into his body, giving him full access to his true demon form.
Loved DMC5 but wish the ending actually brought a closure to the Sparda Sons Saga, instead I am left wondering 'what will happen to chars' and wait for DMC6 or DMC7 to find out.
I think the point they were trying to make was...the Sons of Sparda will never stop fighting each other. We had our chance at an "intervention" - and it failed. So end is the beginning is the end, I guess. I suppose it was too much to ask for a Field of Dreams style game of catch...
Unless they were going to straight up kill them or have some overly corny make-up, the ending was more-or-less full circle enough for me to not feel like I was cliffhangered
They pretty much hinted since 4 that their feud would never end. But it did end on a more positive note; now it's more rivalry than revenge. And Nero gets the spotlight.
Matt Walker
We need a new dmc2!
At this point the time line holds no weight
Shoulda ask how he got out of hell but yet he ask that
i think i can figure out a way he got out the yamato as it can open portals since 1 is before he danta probliy kept hold of it not using it as he didnt like it and it glow opening up a portal back
who is this girl character at Matt's t-shirt ?
I am curious! Help!
the crunchyroll mascot
魂KUDO do you know if she have a name? I just want that t-shirt, but no idea what to google to find that picture?
I dont get it, it actually makes a lot less sense to me, since Dante in 2 is super powerful with a fully evolved Devil Trigger we see him gain in 5. This didnt explain anything, just made it more confusing. I'm just gonna have my own head cannon and say 2 is still last. Tho when Dante was first revealed on his bike I was hoping it was him returning from Hell. But in 5 he first gains Sin Devil Trigger and flight.
I agree. 2 ending left him in hell trapped and 4 he was helping nero.
It sounds like they're basically not considering DMC2 in general. The continuity they're enforcing basically disregards DMC2's place in it, for better or for worse.
@@TranscientFelix oh, so DMC2 never happen basically?
He explained that he escaped from Hell in the prequel novel to DMC5. They set aside a few chapters for the DMC2 characters.
@@TranscientFelix
Yea, it's probably better to just ignore 2 altogether, though the novels tieing all the loose ends between the games still uses it. I'd like to know how they explain Dante's power fluctuations lol.
Makes no damn since but in my mind it'll always be 31425
When the games don’t acknowledge DMC2, it’s place in the continuity doesn’t matter
It's acknowledged in the dmc timeline video in 5.
BradLad56 But what about the actual story of DMC5
@@TheJadedJames The reason Dante has Balrog is because he fought a demon on the island from DMC2 who was Argosax's right hand man, He also met with Matier and Lucia again. This is all explained in the DMC5 prequel novel.

3:18 wasted with no true explanation of why they changed the timeline. Smh.
You're right, i need a true answer. But i still bealive that the timeline is 3 1 4 2 5. Read it on DMC wiki.
Oh they changed it. Even in the game, they have it in that order.
@@DarkkingForever DMC wiki also changed the timeline?!
He explained nothing
Still prefer 3,1,4,5 then 2 or 3,1,4,2 then 5 tbh. I was disappointed when Dante in DMC 5 is noisy and messy. I like the silent and cool Dante because that's the first impression I got from him when I started the series. I started from DMC 2 and got into the series thanks to Dante but now it's kinda weird to see Dante still being noisy even after DMC 2's timeline.
what about DMC 4 SE ?!
its same but vergil story takes place before dmc3.
I think at this point Devil May Cry 2 could very well just be considered a random job in dante's carrer. A hard job no doubt, but just another job. In fact, unless I'm remembering wrong, DMC2 is the only game that has nothing to do with Sparda or Dante's family at all, while all the others are much more personal.
Isnt it supposed to be 3, 2, 1 , 4 cuz in dmc2 dante and trish doesnt know each other yet..
Controversial opinion: Nero was redesigned to look like Donte.
Theyungcity23 He kinda was tbh
noooo DMC2 felt better being in the future where Dante is older and at his strongest it should be 3, 1, 4, 5 & 2

They announced free Bloody Palace update coming next month.
It would’ve made more sense with:
DMC3
DMC1
DMC:Anime
DMC4
DMC2
DMC5
Cause i mean it never explain how dante got back at the end of 2
Go read the Devil May Cry 5 Before The Nightmare Novel it explains how Dante escape from Hell
There's a DMC5 Novel?
@@phoenixchampion7 yes
3 1 anime 2 4 5 or 3 1 anime 4 2 5?
The first one
Hmmm ok
Well, I feel like they should probably pretend DMC2 was a self contained story, because that Dante was NOTHING like the goofball we know in 3, 4 and 5.
Also, they never really explained how Dante managed to escape Hell when he got there in 2. It's implied that the person Lucia (what happened to her by the way, she was baddass with her throwing knives) ran out to meet when she heard the motorcycle was Dante, but how does he go from being serious as hell back to being a goofball?
DMC2 kinda ruined the timeline to me.
I feel like they should make DMC2 not canon, or do a remake of it like they did with Resident Evil 2 and make that one canon.
Maybe... just maybe... go look up the prequel novel to DMC5 instead of jumping the gun with all those questions and assumptions that the novel literally explained it.
No they did apparently right after DMC 2 and before 5 Dante was in Hell and a hot point(portal) appears the same one Demons use now and then to come to our world. And what happened was it showed up Dante went through it ended up back to where he met that old woman on the island, and that lady luci(woman with red hair who was a clone, sorry forgot her name) was their waiting for him, long story short they team up to kill barlog( new devil arm he has) he takes it power and leaves and go back to his office

How many novels are there?
@@Alex_Logan22 4 novels, 1 manga and 1 anime so far.

Did he say DMC1 Dante was too cool to take it? Wtf Matt. Dude Got shocked, impaled several times and had a motorcycle thrown at him.. Does he remember?
I've already read the timeline in DMC wiki. 2 is the last game in the timeline and then 5 shows up.

So does DMC 5 explain how Dante got put of Hell??? I havent beat it yet
But a yes or no would be nice
