I saw The Yardbirds live in Auckland, New Zealand when I was visiting there at the time. On the show also were The Walker Brothers and Scott Walker (Engel) would not come on stage so John had to do all the vocals by himself. The Yardbirds were so so good and if memory serves me correctly, this would have been 1966 so I think Jimmy Page was there. When he started to play 'Shapes Of Things' he had an extended intro and blew everybody away!
I'm so glad you got around to the Yardbirds. I was privileged to see the Yardbirds (with Jimmy Page) live in 1969 at the Montgomery International Speedway in Montgomery, AL. It was the last city on their US tour before they went back to England and shortly thereafter became Led Zeppelin. My husband is a musician and was a roadie for most of the popular groups back in the day, but he never saw the Yardbirds live. When we first met we were rattling off bands we'd seen and when I told him about the Yardbirds he was speechless. (This is where I drop the mic) Great analysis, Fil. Thanks. 🤘
I can't see how you saw them with Page in 1969 when Led Zeppelin's first album was released in January of 1969 and the album was recorded in September 1968. Are you sure you saw them with Page, since the Yardbirds broke up in 1968.

Keith Relf was excellent harmonica player not to mention his vocals ability, songwriter, guitarist as well. sad he left this earth at age 33. "The Yardbirds" recorded some of the finest tracks in Rock. well informative analysis and rundown Fil. I love their cover of Billy Boy Arnold "I Wish You Would" thanks Fil.
Superb video Fill. Having been a Zeppelin all my life, especially living in Kidderminster and the buzz of Plant being seen all around the town and at the age of 9 sitting in my Dad’s car outside the New Inn in Rushock as Bonham was being filmed . But alas I wish I remember these early years, but I was too young. Although i have spent my whole life being immersed in their music. It is so nice to hear the story of their creation. But you really did this story justice by including all of the things that were happening to other artists around the time. Little did they know the impact they would have on the world. I will add this, not that it will excite anyone.. I was once a trainee manager at McDonald’s in Kidderminster around 1989. Someone said Plant was singing with a local group in the small, and to be honest crappy Swan centre shopping centre a short walk away. Omg his voice resonated through the centre. He only did a few songs of the day, I think a police and Bryan Adams song but certainly Rock and Roll. Stood in the cold his voice soured. Never will a vocalist generate a feeling like that again I am sure. Led Zeppelin as a whole and individually were pure artists and deserve all the praise they have received over the years. These are the two Yardbirds songs my garage band played, back in the '60s. Didn't have the talent for some of their other tunes, and we weren't together long enough to get much better. Still, quite a fun time for me.
Glad you mentioned Crawdaddy Club, Fil. I was a regular at the Crawdaddy, Richmond Athletic Ground, with my friends when we were about 14 and used to see the Rolling Stones as the resident house band. They were then followed by the Yardbirds as the house band and we were there the night Keith announced that Eric Clapton would be leaving and going to America. So nice to think we could get up close and personal with these great musicians and dance along in front of the stage!
I was 15 when this track came out. Graham Gouldman who wrote this song also wrote many hits for different artists in the 60s and then went on to be a founder member of 10cc. Thanks again for this wonderful reaction and your knowledge and information that was part of the music of my youth.

Aaron Dale Well, Rolling Stone and Billboard both list Clapton & Beck in the top 10 ever and Page in the top 20 so your opinion is just that, and means little. I have seen Clapton while in Cream, Blind Faith and in his present band and he would certainly rank in the top 5. I saw Beck on tour with Clapton as well as Zeppelin 3 times and other than Hendrix, who I also saw, and Dwayne Allman, who I did not, I would agree with the experts in the industry

Two songs, released closely together, is the only reason the public even remember the Yardbirds today; For Your Love, and Heart Full of Soul. These were among the first songs I learned to cover well on guitar as a kid in the 60's. Oddly, I never get tired of those two songs, although I've listened to and played them untold numbers of times. For this song you gotta have that 12-string tuned a whole step lower. Played lead (simple as it was) covering Heart Full of Soul with some other guys at school on a talent day. Nervous as a nun in a distillery, but also a most memorable day in my long life.

I always liked their version of "I'm a Man" and "Smokestack Lightning" and that one New Yardbirds live album with a raw "Dazed and Confused" that's absolute fire.

If you can track down the live Yardbirds bootleg 'Last Rave-up in L.A ', with Page from March of 1968... The intro bass riff to 'Smokestack Lightning' is 'How Many More Times'.
Chris: I erred when I said 'Last Rave-up...' was recorded in March of 1968. That was 'Live Yardbirds with Jimmy Page'. 'Last Rave-up...' was recorded later, May I think. It's an audience tape with lots of noise but it's a complete performance and Jimmy is absolutely on fire.
Wings of Pegasus I thought that sounded off. I remember a John Travolta/Nancy Allen movie called Blowout about the investigation into the car "accident" involving Senator Ted Kennedy and a young woman who drowned.
Musically, to me, there is nothing more exciting and educational (if that's the right word) than having watched these groups change, grow and evolve, and to see the various musicians/singers who worked with them, even if for a short time, like Clapton, for example, because all those people left their individual stamp on those groups. You just have to sometimes listen carefully to hear this.
The film in question was actually Michelangelo Antonioni's 'BLOW UP', which refers to a photographic print enlargement, the subject focus of the movie.
I was born in '57 and this is part of some of the first music I remember dancing around to along with the Beatles and Monkeys in the mid '60's. (I'm sure my older brother & sister exposed me to it.) Such great music over the years that I have forgotten about! Not sure how I came across your channel, but it's a great trip down memory lane. I don't understand much of the analysis not being a musician, but I do love the history of the band section. You must do a ton of research for each analysis! I absolutely love music and have it on in the background a lot. Now I'm revisiting the stuff from my teens & college years with your inspiration. Thank you Fil! Very informative Fil. You mentioned Terry Reid and I think he would be a great artist for you to highlight. There was a very good reason he was the first vocalist to be asked - he is a superb singer and his Seed Of Memory album is an under-appreciated classic.
I just had to watch this. The metamorphosis of the Greetings from Houston, Texas! The Yardbirds to Led Zeppelin has always fascinated me. I bought a Yardbirds album at a record store 40 years ago. It was my first and regrettably my last Yardbirds album, I could hardly wait to get home and play it on my turn table! The story is a bit more complicated when you throw in Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck but you tell this story so well and I was hanging on every sentence in your monologue, Love it!
Brings back so many memories. I was sewing a lot of my clothes at the time, and during which time I spent listening to 3 albums, The Doors, The Birds, and the Yardbirds. I think I wore them out. So great to learn the history about them. should have done so long times ago, but then...there was no internet! Thanks Fil!

@@wingsofpegasus Yeah, "Blow Out" was a 1981 John Travolta thriller based on the the movie " Blow Up", the difference being in the Travolta movie, a murder is captured on audio instead of a murder captured on film as in "Blow Up."

From Clapton to Beck to Page in a span of five years. The Yardbirds are the single most influential guitar band ever. Now, there was this blues guru named John Mayall. Eric joined his Bluesbreakers then left to form Cream. EC was replaced by Peter Green who then left to found Fleetwood Mac. "Greenie" was replaced by Mick Taylor who later left to replace Brian Jones in the Rolling Stones. That's pretty strong too!
Postscript: In an interview shortly before his death Phil Lynott said he hoped Thin Lizzy would be remembered like The Yardbirds are; as a great guitar band. Hmmm, Gary Moore, Brian Robertson, Scott Gorham, John Sykes... I say "Don't worry, Phil. That is how your band will be remembered." If you don't like Thin Lizzy then you haven't heard Thin Lizzy.

Lucky me! When I was 14 years old I saw the short lived Page and Beck lineup live in a ballroom in NW Iowa. For some reason Page was playing bass that night but what a show that was.
Brian Newell - He started out on bass briefly but Page wasn’t really a bass player per say... But they got a bass player and Page played guitar. Must have been awesome to see...
ipsurvivor Page never "started out" on bass. He was a Rhythm/lead guitarist who learned "skiffing" at an early age then became a studio session guitarist to make a living. He became proficient on bass enough to play bass while giving guitarist Drea a chance to learn bass until Beck could be folded back into the band permanently after his illness. Of course after that happened, it's like Fil said, Moon, Drea and the singer at the time all wanted to move into a different direction than the hip "phsycadelic" craze that was trending by then....in comes plant and Bonham and JPJ. But Page and Beck were in at the same time for a short period and Beck wasn't a bassist so it was possible to see Page on bass for a bit until Beck was out and a true quality bassist like Jones was added.
@@toddpeucker9905 I believe JPJ actually played some bass tracks for the Yard Birds in studio. I could be wrong. Led Zeppelin actually played their 1st few shows as the Yard Birds to honor their contracts.
Todd Peucker - Woah Buddy... I already knew a long time ago Page was on TV in 1957 playing guitar in a Skiffle group. I had Led Zeppelin albums in the 70s so you’re preaching to the choir. IN THE YARDBIRDS PAGE STARTED AS THE Bassist until Chris Dreja switched from rhythm guitar to bass... If I fill in every gap it’s like cleaning an industrial oven... I DID NOT SAY THAT JIMMY STARTED OUT WAY BACK IN THE 50s AS A BASSIST... Page did in fact start out as the bass player FOR THE YARDBIRDS. Maybe this will clear it up for you: Roger the Engineer was released in June 1966. Soon afterwards, Samwell-Smith quit the band at a drunken gig at Queen's College in Oxford[26] and embarked on a career as a record producer. Jimmy Page, who was at the show, agreed that night to play bass until rhythm guitarist Dreja could rehearse on the instrument. Taken from WIKIPEDIA.

The Yardbird's contain my top 3 favourite guitarists. Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. So much talent came out of the Yardbird's. Graham Gouldman also wrote Heart Full Of Soul and Evil Hearted You, that the Yardbird's covered. He also wrote the hit Bus Stop, that The Hollies covered. He later became famous with the band 10 CC, famous for The Things We Do For Love. Paul Samwell-Smith became a famous producer, and produced acts like Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam), Carly Simon and Jethro Tull. It was Chris Dreja who became a famous photographer. He photographed the band photo for Led Zeppelin's first album, at Jimmy Page's request. Eric Clapton had success with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, another short lived supergroup, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominoes and as a solo artist. Jeff Beck had success with the Jeff Beck Group and as a solo artist. Jimmy Page had success with Led Zeppelin, The Firm and with Coverdale Page. John Paul Jones also played bass on the Yardbirds tracks like Little Games, (he also did the string arrangements on that track), No Excess Baggage, and Good Night Sweet Josephine. The Yardbird's and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers had a lot of musical talent come out of them. I own a few on the Yardbird's CDs, from the Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and the Jimmy Page era. 5 Live Yardbirds is a great CD. Keith Relf tragically died in 1976, aged 33, due to an improperly earthed (grounded) electric guitar he was practicing on. For an asthma suffer, who lost a lung, he sure was a great harmonica player. Graham Gouldman was hit making "machine" in that era (and later with 10cc.) I can't remember now all, but one example Herman's Hermits "No milk today."

I was a fan of the later Yardbirds. You nailed it with the break sounding like the Beatles. All the bands sounded like the Beatles! Wow, Phil, the amount of history that you put into these videos is amazing. How long does it take you to compile all that ? I was 16 in 1968 so this music, and so much more, was part of the backdrop of my life. Except for the Beatles, I knew very few names of any members of any of the other bands; it was something that I just never thought about much, I just liked hearing the songs on the radio. It wasn't until many years later that I started wanting to know the history and background information of the bands I had been listening to for so many years. I really like this early stuff. Years ago, that's how I got into the Blues; I just started working backwards, trying to find out where Rock and Roll came from. In fact, after watching your Mother Maybelle Carter vid, I've been getting deep into the origins of Country. I even dug out my guitar (I'm a banjo picker), and am going to try to learn that cool Carter Scratch! Thanks for the inspiration, Fil!

It's kind of odd too see Jeff Beck using a pick. I'm so used to him playing with his fingers. I've always loved Beck - I have his Live at Ronnie Scott's DVD and I love to watch his technique. I think he's a real musician's musician.

These are the two Yardbirds songs my garage band played, back in the '60s. Didn't have the talent for some of their other tunes, and we weren't together long enough to get much better. Still, quite a fun time for me.
Glad you mentioned Crawdaddy Club, Fil. I was a regular at the Crawdaddy, Richmond Athletic Ground, with my friends when we were about 14 and used to see the Rolling Stones as the resident house band. They were then followed by the Yardbirds as the house band and we were there the night Keith announced that Eric Clapton would be leaving and going to America. So nice to think we could get up close and personal with these great musicians and dance along in front of the stage!

I was 15 when this track came out. Graham Gouldman who wrote this song also wrote many hits for different artists in the 60s and then went on to be a founder member of 10cc.

Aaron Dale Well, Rolling Stone and Billboard both list Clapton & Beck in the top 10 ever and Page in the top 20 so your opinion is just that, and means little. I have seen Clapton while in Cream, Blind Faith and in his present band and he would certainly rank in the top 5. I saw Beck on tour with Clapton as well as Zeppelin 3 times and other than Hendrix, who I also saw, and Dwayne Allman, who I did not, I would agree with the experts in the industry

Two songs, released closely together, is the only reason the public even remember the Yardbirds today; For Your Love, and Heart Full of Soul. These were among the first songs I learned to cover well on guitar as a kid in the 60's. Oddly, I never get tired of those two songs, although I've listened to and played them untold numbers of times. For this song you gotta have that 12-string tuned a whole step lower. Played lead (simple as it was) covering Heart Full of Soul with some other guys at school on a talent day. Nervous as a nun in a distillery, but also a most memorable day in my long life.

I always liked their version of "I'm a Man" and "Smokestack Lightning" and that one New Yardbirds live album with a raw "Dazed and Confused" that's absolute fire.
Beck's guitar sound at the beginning of "Train kept a Rollin'" where he imitates a train whistle was fantastic.
@Mike Hfuhruhurr It was kind of obscure so no worries. I had collected lots of bootlegs that all disappeared when I was in the service and I think that was one.

Chris: I erred when I said 'Last Rave-up...' was recorded in March of 1968. That was 'Live Yardbirds with Jimmy Page'.
'Last Rave-up...' was recorded later, May I think. It's an audience tape with lots of noise but it's a complete performance and Jimmy is absolutely on fire.
The film was called Blow Up! An extremely interesting window through which you can look at life in the mid sixties.

Musically, to me, there is nothing more exciting and educational (if that's the right word) than having watched these groups change, grow and evolve, and to see the various musicians/singers who worked with them, even if for a short time, like Clapton, for example, because all those people left their individual stamp on those groups. You just have to sometimes listen carefully to hear this.
The film in question was actually Michelangelo Antonioni's 'BLOW UP', which refers to a photographic print enlargement, the subject focus of the movie.
I was born in '57 and this is part of some of the first music I remember dancing around to along with the Beatles and Monkeys in the mid '60's. (I'm sure my older brother & sister exposed me to it.) Such great music over the years that I have forgotten about! Not sure how I came across your channel, but it's a great trip down memory lane. I don't understand much of the analysis not being a musician, but I do love the history of the band section. You must do a ton of research for each analysis! I absolutely love music and have it on in the background a lot. Now I'm revisiting the stuff from my teens & college years with your inspiration. Thank you Fil! I am still not too old to dance around!

Very informative Fil. You mentioned Terry Reid and I think he would be a great artist for you to highlight. There was a very good reason he was the first vocalist to be asked - he is a superb singer and his Seed Of Memory album is an under-appreciated classic.

I just had to watch this. The metamorphosis of the Greetings from Houston, Texas! The Yardbirds to Led Zeppelin has always fascinated me. I bought a Yardbirds album at a record store 40 years ago. It was my first and regrettably my last Yardbirds album, I could hardly wait to get home and play it on my turn table! The story is a bit more complicated when you throw in Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck but you tell this story so well and I was hanging on every sentence in your monologue, Love it!
Brings back so many memories. I was sewing a lot of my clothes at the time, and during which time I spent listening to 3 albums, The Doors, The Birds, and the Yardbirds. I think I wore them out. So great to learn the history about them. should have done so long times ago, but then...there was no internet! Thanks Fil!

From Clapton to Beck to Page in a span of five years. The Yardbirds are the single most influential guitar band ever.
Now, there was this blues guru named John Mayall. Eric joined his Bluesbreakers then left to form Cream. EC was replaced by Peter Green who then left to found Fleetwood Mac. "Greenie" was replaced by Mick Taylor who later left to replace Brian Jones in the Rolling Stones. That's pretty strong too!
Postscript: In an interview shortly before his death Phil Lynott said he hoped Thin Lizzy would be remembered like The Yardbirds are; as a great guitar band.

What a depth of knowledge about origins of Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin! Fil, I'm hoping that one day you will analyse my favourite Led Zeppelin song 'Since I've been loving you'.
Lucky me! When I was 14 years old I saw the short lived Page and Beck lineup live in a ballroom in NW Iowa. For some reason Page was playing bass that night but what a show that was.
Brian Newell - He started out on bass briefly but Page wasn’t really a bass player per say... But they got a bass player and Page played guitar. Must have been awesome to see...
ipsurvivor Page never "started out" on bass. He was a Rhythm/lead guitarist who learned "skiffing" at an early age then became a studio session guitarist to make a living. He became proficient on bass enough to play bass while giving guitarist Drea a chance to learn bass until Beck could be folded back into the band permanently after his illness. Of course after that happened, it's like Fil said, Moon, Drea and the singer at the time all wanted to move into a different direction than the hip "phsycadelic" craze that was trending by then....in comes plant and Bonham and JPJ. But Page and Beck were in at the same time for a short period and Beck wasn't a bassist so it was possible to see Page on bass for a bit until Beck was out and a true quality bassist like Jones was added.
@@toddpeucker9905 I believe JPJ actually played some bass tracks for the Yard Birds in studio. I could be wrong. Led Zeppelin actually played their 1st few shows as the Yard Birds to honor their contracts.
Todd Peucker - Woah Buddy... I already knew a long time ago Page was on TV in 1957 playing guitar in a Skiffle group. I had Led Zeppelin albums in the 70s so you’re preaching to the choir. IN THE YARDBIRDS PAGE STARTED AS THE Bassist until Chris Dreja switched from rhythm guitar to bass... If I fill in every gap it’s like cleaning an industrial oven... I DID NOT SAY THAT JIMMY STARTED OUT WAY BACK IN THE 50s AS A BASSIST...
Page did in fact start out as the bass player FOR THE YARDBIRDS. Maybe this will clear it up for you:
Roger the Engineer was released in June 1966. Soon afterwards, Samwell-Smith quit the band at a drunken gig at Queen's College in Oxford[26] and embarked on a career as a record producer. Jimmy Page, who was at the show, agreed that night to play bass until rhythm guitarist Dreja could rehearse on the instrument.

The Yardbird's contain my top 3 favourite guitarists. Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. So much talent came out of the Yardbird's. Graham Gouldman also wrote Heart Full Of Soul and Evil Hearted You, that the Yardbird's covered. He also wrote the hit Bus Stop, that The Hollies covered. He later became famous with the band 10 CC, famous for The Things We Do For Love. Paul Samwell-Smith became a famous producer, and produced acts like Cat Stevens (Yusuf Islam), Carly Simon and Jethro Tull. It was Chris Dreja who became a famous photographer. He photographed the band photo for Led Zeppelin's first album, at Jimmy Page's request. Eric Clapton had success with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream, another short lived supergroup, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominoes and as a solo artist. Jeff Beck had success with the Jeff Beck Group and as a solo artist. Jimmy Page had success with Led Zeppelin, The Firm and with Coverdale Page. John Paul Jones also played bass on the Yardbirds tracks like Little Games, (he also did the string arrangements on that track), No Excess Baggage, and Good Night Sweet Josephine. The Yardbird's and John Mayall's Bluesbreakers had a lot of musical talent come out of them. I own a few on the Yardbird's CDs, from the Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and the Jimmy Page era. 5 Live Yardbirds is a great CD. Keith Relf tragically died in 1976, aged 33, due to an improperly earthed (grounded) electric guitar he was practicing on. For an asthma suffer, who lost a lung, he sure was a great harmonica player. Graham Gouldman was hit making "machine" in that era (and later with 10cc.) I can't remember now all, but one example Herman's Hermits "No milk today."

And don't forget the band formed by Yardbirds members Jim McCarty and Keith Relf. Renaissance, after a few member changes, went on to become Renaissance, a fantastic symphonic rock group of the 70s.
I was a fan of the later Yardbirds. You nailed it with the break sounding like the Beatles. All the bands sounded like the Beatles! You cracked me up when you said " Now days you don't even have to play an instrument with all the technology we have." Or something like that. Thanks Fil for the analysis and history lesson. In 1969, Keith Relf and Jim McCarty organized a new, more folk and classical oriented, band called Renaissance. Their first album was produced by Paul Samwell-Smith.

Wow, Phil, the amount of history that you put into these videos is amazing. How long does it take you to compile all that ? I was 16 in 1968 so this music, and so much more, was part of the backdrop of my life. Except for the Beatles, I knew very few names of any members of any of the other bands; it was something that I just never thought about much, I just liked hearing the songs on the radio. It wasn't until many years later that I started wanting to know the history and background information of the bands I had been listening to for so many years. Thank you, Phil, for making these great videos..!!

I really like this early stuff. Years ago, that's how I got into the Blues; I just started working backwards, trying to find out where Rock and Roll came from. In fact, after watching your Mother Maybelle Carter vid, I've been getting deep into the origins of Country. I even dug out my guitar (I'm a banjo picker), and am going to try to learn that cool Carter Scratch! Thanks for the inspiration, Fil!

It's kind of odd too see Jeff Beck using a pick. I'm so used to him playing with his fingers. I've always loved Beck - I have his Live at Ronnie Scott's DVD and I love to watch his technique. I think he's a real musician's musician.

I really started to appreciate Led Zeppelin's incredible musicianship, after hearing, then purchasing, a live performance they did in Morocco ('95, maybe), playing alongside Moroccan Musicians who played traditional North African instruments -- the performance completely transformed Zepplin's music! It's a breathtaking performance that I love to play on long roadtrips!🚗🎶🎵
