Tavis Smiley Speaks Out About Sexual Harassment Accusations Made By Staffers

- Radio and TV Host Tavis Smiley spoke out for the first time Monday morning since allegations of sexual harassment by staffers at PBS were made public last week.
Since the story broke, PBS suspended his talk show and retail giant Walmart said they would not sponsor the show pending the outcome of the investigation into his alleged behavior. Here is some of what he said on Good Morning America this morning.

Why don't they have an HR professional on the panel. There are clear definitions of sexual harassment and hostile environments. In this case no one is pointing out that Tavis' decision to date subordinates made him vulnerable. He can have the best intentions and a woman could still feel intimidated by the mere power dynamic. It's a high risk situation.

Tavis is a sellout and he's shady. I believe it. He admitted to having relationships with people who work under him that had no power. That's a no no because the woman might actually not want to but think her job is at risk. That's because back in the day her job would have been at risk.
Dating at work is not a sexual crime. No job is that important that you should keep working there if you feel pressured to have sex. Just Quit. I would rather be broke.
So which one of these hits did he marry? None of them. "You don't shit where you eat", I have always been told. I have met someone I was working with and this ended up in a relationship, but I did not have multiple relationships with people I worked with. I had people who wanted to start relationships and I just wouldn't because it would not look right after I was "with" someone else who worked there and now that we were no longer together and she was gone I was with another one. I could have easily just hit an run because some of the relationships available were that type but believe it or not there are many men who will turn down "pussy" because it would complicate their work space. I have later left sites and started relationships but Tavis has got to know and is smart enough to know that if he is sleeping with someone or several people on his staff he is opening himself up to drama if/when they start to have a problem with him or get jealous or whatever, especially as a national figure. He has dollar signs all over him. This was plain stupid and the pauses to think are just hard to watch.
You right....l met Tavis about 15 years ago..he is not a flirtation man at all.... Actually he is very into himself...If he looks at you to get your attention, and you act like you are not interested...he will keep it moving... because he act like you Have to pursue him.....Tavis is innocent! The hell with you PBS..you know Tavis is a gentleman, that is what was so attractive about him...He was a stand off kind of guy.
I understand what he is saying however it's been a long standing belief to not mix business and pleasure. I sign a conflict of interest form annually so my company makes it more formal. Or there are more crude ways to say it but having sex with people in your office, especially when you are the boss is a bad idea. In some cases, its grounds for being fired.

If you own the company isn't everyone subordinate to you? In your contract it should say you can't be fired due to sexual relationships but for only valid reasons. I want to see these women's contracts and any reports made against them and Tavis in HR. I want to see the full scope of all of this because it seems like a lot of BS to me.
There are some instances, where women/men will pursue their superior in order to gain access to certain opportunities. This is also unacceptable and It should be punished in the same way as a superior pursuing his/her subordinate.

I stated this earlier but PBS said themselves they terminated Tavis show and were "going" to investigate. That means they alienated Tavis without so much as having any legal grounds to stop the show. Regardless to Tavis outcome, PBS will lose this coming legal war.

What we know, which he admitted too is that he has no problem having sex with subordinates which is playing with Fire when your in a position of power. Smh Tavis is going to lose this one unfortunately. Stop sleeping with people that work for you and at a far lesser pay. Stay in your lane to avoid these problems. These women can easily say they felt intimidated.

It only came to light when it was found out that he was being blackmailed, Leslie Voorhees the head of CBS dated and married a subordinate, this attack on Tavis is a smokescreen to keep you distracted. While these harassment stories dominate the focus of society, a tax bill that is going to hurt so many people gets ignored.

Roland, I have a question that hasn't been asked during all of the allegations against men in the workplace. If we don't get a handle on this fiasco, how much longer before women in power, or women business owners start getting harassment claims against them in the workplace? I personally don't agree with relationships, affairs, consensual relationships in the workplace because those that are engaged in them truly make me very uncomfortable at work.

I agree with Roland on this, that Trump's presidency is a major factor in women coming out like this.
The fact that so many people went ahead and voted for Trump in spite of not just the allegations by so many women against him, but his own words over decades about his own treatment of women and the condescending tone and language he employed against women throughout his entire campaign, do appear to have some role in more women willing to step out, and consequently bring the collective ego of men down by exposing their treatment of women in their companies.
I think this is a good thing. I have never been in such a situation and have always avoided such, and I've been in supervisory roles for over thirty years.
I constantly remind my staff not to behave this way. I admit that the best work environment that have been my foundation was my sixteen years if employment by a female business owner who drilled those great principles into me. And because I have great respect for my own mother who was a very self respecting Ob/Gyn when I was growing up in Nigeria West Africa before moving to the US where I now live.
I come from strong women, who were well educated and principled. In fact, unlike in the typical Christian system of the West, those generations of women behind me were strong Yorùbá women who had some Christian values, YES?, but certainly maintained the beautiful and more edifying Yorùbá ethics of conduct.
At the end, I believe the Christian faith, or perhaps the monotheistic faiths as a whole have high-jacked and decimated tribal and natural traditions all over the world, only to force peoples to replace them with more militaristic monotheistic systems with their inflexible and non nuanced moral codes that are clear in favor of men as Master and women and children as property.
