We are all basically cyborgs already. The data rate is just slow due to the inefficiency of the data transfer technology (keyboards, screens, headphones; rather than direct-to/from-brain transmission/reception). We all have an electronic connection to everyone & everything else, right in our hands/pocket at pretty much any time. Some people even have it on their wrist, in their cars, on their refrigerators/microwaves/thermostats/TVs, and even in their pet's play areas (seriously, look up some of the devices that people set up just for their dogs/cats).
People with certain advanced prosthetics could be considered cyborgs, as could military members using exoskeletons or look-to-aim technology (like in the AH-64 Apache). At least one of the contractors making exoskeletons for the military is also making them now for people with spinal cord injuries. The newest version uses a set of sensors, rather than manually operated controls, to create the commands for movements. This is only a couple of steps away from either Iron Man or - effectively - the Six Million Dollar Man (Robocop, if you're later Gen-x or earlier Millenial).

Firstly, you are one of the best things about the internet. Secondly, it occurs to me that the difference in effectiveness between the phone mic and the video mic is directionality. Low frequencies refract easily, which is why you can put your subwoofer almost anywhere. High frequencies are highly directional, which is why your tweeters need to be pointed at you. Ultrasound even more so. Your choker's transducers were pointed almost directly at your phone, an the bottom of it, where the mic is. The video mic was behind the camera and therefore had no transducers pointed at it. Some will be reflected, but will interfere and dissipate quickly. That's why bat sonar uses those frequencies.

Even though the static seems to drown out the audio, captions indicate she said, _"Testing, testing, 123. I am going to move my phone a bit. Testing, testing, 123. At least in the US, according to OSHA regulations, prolonged exposure to ultrasonic sound is considered a hazard and requires hearing protection. Worst thing someone can do is assume that, because they can't see/hear/feel/smell it, that it isn't harmful.
One similar example is infrared light. Strong enough infrared light directly in to your eye can still damage your eyes, even if you'd never see it happening.
    Always be safe, people.

First: Could a BoM (Bill of Materials) be added to the project PDF files? If one is there, I didn't find it. In particular, I'm looking for the datasheet for the ultrasonic emitter, to see how far it can be pushed.
I suspect an ultrasonic jammer would fail with most capacitive capsule mics, and work best with MEMS mics. The MEMS interference comes from the nature of MEMS devices themselves: They are tiny mechanical systems that are easily disturbed, Capacitive capsule mics use a far larger sensing element that is tuned for audio frequencies: The better the mic, the larger the capsule and the harder it will be to jam.
Little capsule mics, ones the size of the tip of your little finger, are quite common and should be jammable. The main approach to jam such mics would to try to stimulate a resonant frequency. The code only utilizes a frequency range from 24-26 KHz, which is easily blocked by capsule mics, as it is barely outside the audio band. I'd think we'd need to check from 40 KHz and above (to maybe 120 KHz) to find resonances. I'd recommend playing with the upper limit in line 57 of the sketch and see what happens.

@@Naomi-Wu You can get 60W transducers intended for Ultrasonic Cleaners. As they are intended to feed into a liquid filled tank, that seems a way to make a 360 degree output using a single transducer and a water filled metal pipe. Judging by the problems Louis Rossmann and others have with their shop Ultrasonic Cleaners, a range of 4-6 meters is possible.

    • @sumduma55
      @sumduma55 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@station240 these transducers seem to only work on mems and electrec style microphones. You can find the transducers in the 60, 70 and 80 watt varieties relatively easily online and it will be cheaper than buying and tearing apart an ultrasonic cleaner. Dynamic microphones or the ones that have the old school coil and ribbon that use magnetic induction should remain unaffected. It's also possible to build the circuit out on a digital mems microphones to avoid this and even include noise canceling but there is an added expense.
I got lost down a deep rabbit trail/hole a few years ago trying to make an ultrasonic LRAD type device to employ speech jamming and mess with people's minds. Anyways, along the way I ran into these problems with the mems mics which made my plans less attractive in some ways but way more insidious in others. In the end, I lost interest but my point was going to be that you could modulate these signals to inject speech onto these recording devices too. Unless you are in a certain frequency range, the user will never know until they review the recordings or in the case of someone on the phone, the other party mentions it. My favorite was pipimg a recording into it telling Alexa to say she waa going to pee on the leftovers from dinner when you go to sleep when over at someone's house for drinks or something.

Since there are two rows of speakers on those boards anyway,, wouldn't you want the top row pointing up at a 45-degree angle to interfere with devices that are further from you or more elevated? Seems like a lot of stuff that isn't directly in front of/below you ends up too far off "boresight" of the transducers to get jammed because the collar is naturally sitting at an angle.

This is pretty awesome. It does make me wonder about hearing/ear safety, though. Human hearing is particularly susceptible to damage from high frequency sounds, and just because we can't hear something doesn't mean that the energy isn't bombarding our stereocilia... and if we can't hear it, then we may not really limit our exposure duration. But maybe something like this wouldn't get "loud" enough to be a problem.

No need to apologise for anything.
An interesting and original project which will always take longer than expected.
One thing that is not mentioned (although it will vary with the size and design of the device) is the power consumption and battery life.

When pointing people at JLPCB, you might want to also point out KiCAD -- free (open source) software for multi-layer PCB design. I learned it in my old age, so I'd guess young makers could pick it up quickly.

The stiff collar on a jacket may also be a good place to set up the jammer.

Naomi, try modulating the ultrasonic transducers, all independently. You could have them all send various tones, play with phasing, play computer tones or music, or just play many loud or clipped sound tracks from your videos randomly and out of phase all at once, like the target phone is picking up your random thoughts. My favorite is all playing ultrasonic rude words out of phase, insulting the recorder operator.
The technical reason for this is that it is much easier for a snoop to filter out a continuous or repeating noise, than it is random conversation. Also, any person listening tends to automatically be distracted my rude words and insulting comments. There are other, more nefarious, things you can do to mess with anyone listening to the recording, but I'll just stop here. Great vids. Thanks for all you do.

Cool device, but you didn't try it with mics that weren't in the "line of sight" of the choker.
Would it work without line of sight? Since the jammer thingies were highly directional?

Cool concept. One problem I can't see an obvious work around however, (although i would love to be proved wrong). Is that anyone dedicated enough to spying on you should be able to remove the jamming with a relatively simple Fourier Band pass filter. This should effectively remove any ultrasonic signals from the sample.
I'm sure I'm missing some non-linear effects, but it doesn't look like the signal has a strong enough intensity to induce any non-linear effects.

nice bit of tech but i think you would have trouble with it when using the mobile phone, what i would do instead is maybe do a sound inversion meaning when you have one sound an amplifier would make a similar sound that is just 180 degrees inverted meaning it would cancle the sound but that could be directed out like your collar does.

Amazing! Thanks as always Naomi :)
p.s. I humbly recommend you do some practice with hand placed supports. I am reasonably sure you could have printed your model with a quarter of the supports the automatic support algorithm produced. Also, you might want to try Lychee slicer some time. It's got some really great functions for quickly placing supports, and it's anti-aliasing is miraculous.
    Cheers!

Ah there is a trick to making resin models less likely to shatter when removing support material.
After the IPA bath, soak in warm water (say out of the tap) for a few minutes, then remove the support material and cure.
    Tip from the AnycubicPhoton subreddit.

Just an idea, Naomi, have you considered getting a fume cabinet installed for the Resin printers? The ones they used to have in my school science labs were large enough they would have fitted that printer in with no trouble.

I know cell phone signal jammers are illegal in the US, but I wonder if any laws apply to these. A first amendment argument could possibly be argued though. Your speech is free and is yours to do what you want with, and this is a flex in that regard.

I think the design is alright, the top row of the mic should be tilted upwards a little.
