I really like how Hasselhoff makes it look like Jekyll is actually fighting out from inside himself. It just makes it feel like there is really a war between the two personalities within him. Also... "I'll see you there, Jekyll!"
You can tell that David didn’t think they were going to go that fast… that’s why in the middle there were some words that got missed due to not being able fit all of them into the tempo… he is AMAZING for sticking through this number and staying in character, and not messing up. If I were him after the show, I would’ve slapped the music director for speeding up the hardest song in the whole musical😂
You’ve hit the nail on the head in identifying what I believe is the single biggest failing in David’s performance in this song and others, especially The Moment, and that is his PACING which is seriously flawed! He literally RACES through numerous points to the point it seems he can’t wait to get to the end and it’s INCREDIBLY Distracting from the emotion he tries so hard to convey! Perhaps it’s because the limits of his vocal range and particularly STAMINA struggle to match the demands of these powerhouse songs and the valiant effort David put into his performance. He deserves Respect.
I just noticed that towards the end David was using his Jekyll voice for some of Hyde's words and Hyde's voice for some of the Jekyll lines. That's a really good detail considering the fact that right after the song ends Jekyll returns to being his usual self, which is both good and evil, so it shows that the antidote created by Jekyll is actually working.
@@ninjaclaw1able I don't think this was the case... The thing is, the final sentences are reauired to be sang in operatic way which means using 'belly' voice instead of throat. He looks like a man fighting from the inside out and Hyde looks like he is physically/emotionally breaking Jekyll. A lot of the times, although the other actors have better voices, they just look like one actor with two characters. I don’t feel the pain Jekyll should be having. This song should embody an extreme anxiety attack, and I don’t feel it with the others. Playing two different people is not the same as playing two different mindsets. Playing two different people is playing two different personalities. Playing two different mindsets is playing two different areas in the brain to express anger or pain or happiness. It’s the emotions, the mental states. Jekyll and Hyde aren’t supposed to be just two men, Jekyll is being emotionally drained and in pain and trying to use his last bit of strength, while Hyde is taking complete control and screaming and satanic.

My feeling the same here. A lot of people keep saying how Warlow is so much better, but for myself though not being a classically trained musician but classical music being my favourite genre and having spent sone years learning classical piano very hard, I feel like Warlow as much as being a great singer, mainly shows off how good singer he is, tk the level of grotesque, while Hasselhoff might have had barely enough skill to sing this, but it was just enough, end his interpretion instead of being grotesque, is a believevable conflict full of desperation and anger, and there is nothing wrong with his singing. His voice...so powerful and masculine. Love it! Would never have thought that David Hasselhoff had it in him to portray Jekyll and Hyde so well. Especially as his Broadway debut. It's a very tough role to pull off.

He may not have the best voice, but god damn his enthusiasm is infectious. It feels like he's really having the time of his life on stage and that enthusiasm really goes a long way.
I've seen several actors portraying this role and he demonstrates the sheer torment his character is going through by transitioning back and forth from Jekyll to Hyde -- definitely among the best of the performances that I've seen.
I’m not a fan of Hasselhoff’s performance here; but, if there’s one thing that Hasselhoff absolutely was the best at, it was the transitions between Jekyll and Hyde. Listen to how smooth it is at 2:08 and tell me he isn’t the best at it.
Absolutely! The transitions between Jekyll’s screaming and Hyde’s incredibly haunting operatic performance is literally my favourite part of the whole show and he KILLS IT.
I agree, i think his singing is not as good as others (not horrible mind you) and his hyde is a bit weak, sounding too similar to jekyll- and overall his hyde sounds pretty tame and not very expressive HOWEVER his transition between the 2 is the smoothest I've seen and I personally think his jekyll is also excellent- he sounds exhausted, afraid, yet still argumentative in the face of hyde. Overall not my favorite performance but Hasselhoff nails some very difficult parts of the role so I still very much respect his performance. Personally though I enjoy this song the most for hyde going off the walls and that's the one thing his performance didn't capture as well as some others in my opinion.
Am I the only one who like everything about this performance including the singing . It’s an emotional scene ,there fighting so the singing will not and should not be perfect . It should be rigid and rough on the edges to give off that effect . He did absolutely amazing
Now imagine this man is considered a joke and a failure to such level even he doesn't take himself seriously. Had his career started from theatre instead of Knight Rider, people would ptobably see hom other way around.
@@piotrmalewski8178 yes! I’m not a hasselhoff fan but a huge musical theater buff and try to spread the word and show people this clip just to give this guy acknowledgment. I’m angry that it was not publicized in a better manner while he was performing this play. And that he was not nominated for a tony
So someone said there was no emotion in this? I'm sorry, I don't care if you don't like it but you just can't say there is no emotion? Have you even watched the video?! The singing is definitely not the best, I agree, but he is by far the best J/H for this very bit. I wouldn't say for the whole show, but his confrontation is just the best I've ever seen. (talking youtube, as I haven't had the chance to see it live); just look at the way he is acting, his Hyde is absolutely brilliantly disgusting, his Jekyll is desperate, look at all the details of the performance, the way he plays with his hands, the looks he has! This song is definitely not about showing around your pretty belty voice like Warlow did (as much as I love him), 95% of that song is actually acting, basically I think it's even better if the singing isn't amazing... I mean, Hyde is an evil monster (think about Bill from Oliver!, same thing, no pretty voice needed) and at this very moment, Jekyll is totally desperate, he cannot control anything anymore, think about those moments when you really wanna cry and you try to talk? Your voice trembles. Your emotions change your voice, and not the other way round. Feel free to share why you disagree (gently please) I'd love to have a talk about that
I feel like hasslehoffs Jekyll/Hyde is portrayed more as an older character, then a younger more evil character, which is why I somewhat enjoy his performance, it gives somewhat uniqueness, showing that Hyde or Evil is old and is growing old inside him. But the Hyde that terrified me more was ultimately Anthony Warlow, it had every aspect as to what Hyde needs, and he transitions well between the two.
My gosh man! I had no idea who this was when I first watched it but now that I know he isn’t really a classical singer this just blew me away! His acting is incredible, and while his vibrato could use a bit of steadying, his voice is still really good! he absolutely blew this out of the park! I can’t even imagine singing between those two roles so well!
He did have a little trouble switching between Jekyll and Hyde’s voices but I think that just added more to the fight for control. It should’ve been more consistent. Another thing I loved was the use of his left hand as Hyde. Left handed people a long time ago was seen as “evil” and associated with the devil (which now we know is dumb). Hyde being left handed or have it be the dominant hand is a small but great detail if you know history of superstitions.
He may not be the greatest singer, and he overdoes the vibrato more often than he should, but as a big Jekyll & Hyde fan I rank this up there as one of the best confrontations. Right at 2:24 the "You'll never be able to separate Jekyll from Hyde" and then in the same breath he lets out that blood curdling scream showing just how much pain this is causing him; incredibly done.
The hardest part about this is the adoption of to completely different personalities into your body and portraying them both equally well. I can only imagine what the rehearsal process was like because this was amazing!
I felt this performance tug on my heart more than Rob Evan but both are great. People need to stop comparing and realize both actors are doing their best to bring this role to life.
Being about 14 years late, i just wanted to say this, while his voice might not be the best, his performance and the way he's able to not only differentiate between Jekyll and Hyde, but also the ability to show the difficult fight for control is, is a masterpiece, love it.
godDAMN he did both parts at the same time while singing the faster live tempo??? fucking Talent man that was a passion performance and it made it shine. His voice is really good too, ESPECIALLY considering he’s doing both Jekyll and Hyde at the same time. Like, there’s NO room to breathe and prep for big parts. That song is probably the most exhausting performance like holy shit
okk im sorry but there are so many mean people in the comments :( yes its not as amazing as anthony warlows performance but jesus give david some bloody credit!!! anthony had it audioed seperately which was easier for him to do the switchs ( i adore anthony more dont get me wrong
Muses above I love how his poses for Hyde and Jeckel are like a looming beast standing over its prey. Really gives you the perfect sense of what Hyde truly is
I actually prefer this version because of how fast paced and difficult it is the way that Hyde seems to be actually forcing his way through is fantastic.
I love this version. I think change of tone was not perfect but contrast between jekyll and hyde was impressive and the contrast gave us perfect visualization of confrontation of jekyll and hyde
As someone who struggles with split personality disorder in a lot eerily similar ways, this is probably my favorite performance of this song. I do like the tempo and singing of the original, but I really love how he captures the battle between the two personalities outward as well as internally. But what I appreciate that most other performances don’t do, is how they make Hyde not so monstrous, and more sinister and dark but still human-like. It is and has always been Jekyll’s body. Hyde only dwells within his mind. It only makes sense that Hyde would still retain his appearance and likeness. Anyways, yeah. Great performance by Mr. Hasselhoff
i didn't see anyone mentioning this part, when he says "i am you, youre Hyde", he sounds just frustrated, like Hyde is just on the verge of losing it, and the "see you there Jekyll", dude nailed it more so he made it sound like Hyde was trying to convince himself that he will live after Jekyll dies at the end
This is not just a song, it's acting. I have seen the play and Hoff did very well. Watching re-runs of Knight Rider and Baywatch I didn't think he could act this well. In those shows he posed a lot... Applause.
I think he does such a good job here! I like how it literally is himself (J) fighting with himself (H) - the inner struggle and in/out vocally. I love the simplicity of it with just this lighting, acting and voice. I also like the hair and him ripping his shirt. It’s really good.

I like how he says "damn you hyde set me free" instead of "damn you hyde let me be" idk why, I feel like it gives it more dept and more like a fight. And also how it seems like Hyde is snatching jekyll into him.

I also want to add, the 2 parts where he shouts "no" were *incredibly* smooth.
He actually showed the physical struggle of the two sides trying to take control well. I liked that detail
Am I the only one who like everything about this performance including the singing . It’s an emotional scene ,there fighting so the singing will not and should not be perfect . It should be rigid and rough on the edges to give off that effect . He did absolutely amazing
You can tell he's struggling with the orchestra but other than that yeah! This is one of my favorite J/H performances
came because of tiktok, stayed for the talent.
SAME
Me too!
Same and now I’m obsessed it.
You know it sis
Yeah tiktok really has me wanting to buy tickets for this show
This mans acting is so amazing it makes me angry.
Feel free to share why you disagree (gently please) I'd love to have a talk about that
It's your opinion, but there is a bit of emotion.
I love this. I love your comment. Those people anyway, can never do better than him. Subscribed.
I get the impression he's having a blast here and for me that's really all that matters. If you love it, go for it. The passion will shine through.
"They'll never be able to seperate Jekyll from HUUAAAAGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!"
His performance gives me shivers. He's so good.
Thanks GT Live
The hardest part about this is the adoption of to completely different personalities into your body and portraying them both equally well. I can only imagine what the rehearsal process was like because this was amazing!
I felt this performance tug on my heart more than Rob Evan but both are great. People need to stop comparing and realize both actors are doing their best to bring this role to life.
***** i totally agree.
I knew he could sing, but I never thought he could act this good!!! Amazing performance, just amazing!
2:12
For people who first found the song on TikTok memes.
Wait, what memes?
Obsessed with this performance
I really liked how he acted really well showing Jekyll fighting for control from Hyde. He really deserves more attention from hos great acting.
Oh and did i mention that i LOVE how he tauntingly sang "i'll see you there Jekyll"
I completely agree; he actually SHOWS the struggle between them. Don't know why they sped it up so much, but still a fantastic version, man.
He is just Amazing. Amazing ,.point.
He has been a singer for many years now, but he is only popular as a singer in Europe. He started in the 80s.
@@StarlitSeafoam He sped it up himself, they followed.
so many ppl are complaining about his singing...I don't think there is anything wrong with it. and his acting is SO GOOD. especially as Hyde
Yeah they are just mad they can’t do better 💪🏻
His acting is killer, nobody can deny that, they'd be lying. Valid Criticism is being brought up about his voice though.
Well anthony warlow's version exists sooo
I will never doubt the talents of David hasselhof again
2:31 I got chills the first time hearing this, its so amazing for some reason.
Muses above I love how his poses for Hyde and Jeckel are like a looming beast standing over its prey. Really gives you the perfect sense of what Hyde truly is
Idgaf what anyone says I love everything about this performance
I whip my hair back and forth I whip my hair back and forth I whip my hair back and forth I whip my hair back and forth
wildcatste it was worth watching just for this comment.
Bahahahhahahhha
This comment I can't-
I am proud to be the thousandth like.
This is old as hell lol
Like, I knew he sang but I’m really impressed. With everything, the control, the acting, the voice changing, it’s super impressive!
I remember watching this years ago and be so spooked out. Still am lol.
Amazing acting.
I actually prefer this version because of how fast paced and difficult it is the way that Hyde seems to be actually forcing his way through is fantastic.
the direction / constume and makeup is top notch here
I love this version. I think change of tone was not perfect but contrast between jekyll and hyde was impressive and the contrast gave us perfect visualization of confrontation of jekyll and hyde
INSPIRATION RIGHT HEREE!! Amazing acting singing... and lighting man !
the "deep inside" part is amazing the way he fights through that line is brilliant 👏 ❤
Hasselhoff
This is the only version I've found of this that I haven't found hilarious because of the switching, this guy did a good job
I’m out of breath just watching this! How do people do this?!
OOOOHOHOH THAT TRANSITION AT 2:35 WAS SOOOOO GOOD
dude I love this, he gets the emotion spot on
i didn't see anyone mentioning this part, when he says "i am you, youre Hyde",
he sounds just frustrated, like Hyde is just on the verge of losing it,
and the "see you there Jekyll", dude nailed it
more so he made it sound like Hyde was trying to convince himself that he will live after Jekyll dies at the end
This was amazing. I wish i could watch it live.
Huge respect
This is not just a song, it's acting. I have seen the play and Hoff did very well. Watching re-runs of Knight Rider and Baywatch I didn't think he could act this well. In those shows he posed a lot... Applause.
I think he does such a good job here! I like how it literally is himself (J) fighting with himself (H) - the inner struggle and in/out vocally. I love the simplicity of it with just this lighting, acting and voice. I also like the hair and him ripping his shirt. It’s really good.
people, you need to stop hasseling the Hoff -_-
Youre absolutley right!
first, I love this comment. second, yes please leave the man alone
love this !! thanks mrs.cain for putting me on to musicals now i’m in love with them!!!
I love his Hyde. This is actually pretty good, it could use some work but all in all I believe that he did well.
This scene blows my mind off the roof
Yes I am a GTlive watcher
Impressive acting and he uses his voice changing between the 2 characters excitingly.
You may have made the Hoff into a meme but, man, that was a hell of a jaw-dropping performance!
Love it, best David
God damn this is impressive
Thank you, MatPat
I came here from tik tok..and i didnt expect this..and im PLEASANTLY surprised..his actings is absolutely amazing
Lost in the darkness, silence surrounds you
Once there was morning, now endless night
I will find the answer, I'll never desert you
I promise you this 'til the day that I -
Do you really think that I would ever let you go?
Do you think I'd ever set you free?
If you do, I'm sad to say it simply isn't so
You will never get away from me
All that you are is a face in the mirror
I close my eyes, and you'll disappear
I'm what you face when you face in the mirror
Long as you live, I will still be here
All that you are is the end of a nightmare
All that you are is a dying scream
After tonight, I shall end this demon dream
This is not a dream my friend, and it will never end
This one is the nightmare that goes on
Hyde is here to stay, no matter what you may pretend
And he'll flourish long after you're gone
Soon you will die, and my silence will hide you
You cannot choose but to lose control
You can't control me, I live deep inside you
Each day, you'll feel me devour your soul
I don't need you to survive like you need me
I'll become whole as you dance with death
And I'll rejoice as you breathe your final breath
I'll live inside you forever, no!
With Satan himself by my side, no!
And I'll know that now and forever
They'll never be able to separate Jekyll from Hyde
Can't you see it's over now? It's time to die
No not I, only you
If I die, you'll die too
You'll die in me, I'll be you
Damn you Hyde! Set me free
Can't you see? You are me
No! Deep inside
I am you, you are Hyde
No, never
Yes, forever
God damn you, Hyde, take all your evil deeds, and rot in Hell
I'll see you there, Jekyll
Never!
I had the DVD to this! But it got stolen from me. I've been itching to see this again, it's been so many years since I did. David really put his all into this.
WOW! Never have I seen David Hasselhoff like this! WOW!
Absolutely amazing! I love the singing, acting, lighting, everything! He was the first portrayal of the character and this musical I’ve seen and it’s by far the best version to me! I have listened to others and for me they are different and not as good as this version !!!
I like how he says "damn you hyde set me free" instead of "damn you hyde let me be" idk why, I feel like it gives it more dept and more like a fight.
And also how it seems like Hyde is snatching jekyll into him.
He did a great job. Really felt and portrayed the part . Well done David!!
wow his performance is just amazing oh my god
love seeing people running here cuz matpat told us too
My little brother wanted to do this as his final musical at his school, he was so excited to do it to, he definitely would have gotten the main roll (granted no one really wanted to do theatre at the school, no one liked the teacher) but they ended up doing Youre a Good Man Charlie Brown. He was Charlie Brown
MatPat sent me here :))
The most impressive on I've seen ❤️
Anybody else here from the new GTLive episode's Witty Banter? 😂😂😂
(7/31/24)
I love this man.
