    I love that, for the most part, houseplant youtubers are super supportive of eachother😊 I'm constantly seeing other youtubers that I watch leaving comments on other houseplant channels! It's so awesome! As a matter of fact, I just saw one of your comments on Ferns video the other day, lol! I love that! I immediately gave it a 👍 😁💚

    I’ve been in the plant community for a decade. Prior to, and even during, I’ve never really used moss to propagate. I adjust my soil mixes accordingly and almost always use water for cuttings. In my experience water is much faster and has a better success rate. Only recently have I branched out into pon and other materials at all. For me the jury is still out. Over the past year Ive rehab’d a lot of root damaged plants from regular potting soil. Making the adjustments with soil is getting easier now that I know more. I still can’t believe how many plants I killed over the years lmao 😂. I love seeing the honesty here. We’ve all done it. Excellent video sir.

      Thanks Scott. I'll have to go back and watch this video as it is an older one know and I can't remember all that is in it. I no longer use the self watering pot for this plant. It is in a chunky soil and I have switched to top dressing with the moss to hold in the moisture and when it gets dry, I know know when it needs water. Thanks for watching and hope you check out some more NEWER ones lol

    Experimenting is so much fun. I wouldn't mind hearing about other channels you watch. Maybe I'll find one I like. Also about the lack of nutrients, sometimes I'll add super thrive to the water used to wet the perlite in my propagation boxes.

    The self watering pot you have is the exact one I have my exotica in since Feb, and it's doing well. I also have a Maharani in one but that is a one leaf wonder and has been for months. I don't know why anyone would get angry over a plant care video. They all have a delete button. I love discussing plant care with you and the many others I subscribe to. We can all learn from each other.

    I’ve started to DIY my own self watering pots for my more moisture loving ferns and monolena as I’m also an under waterer. I use one of those pedestal style cache pots as they provide a larger reservoir of water than ones specifically made to be self watering pots, with a piece of paracord as my wick and thread it through the nursery pot, similar to how you have your ready made one. I also use a super chunky mix with coco chips, charcoal, rice hulls with only about 10-20% potting mix. It’s been two months now, I’m just about due to top up the reservoir, and so far so good.

    Think you should have put some sphagnum with your soil mix because I believe Anthuriums are acid loving plants.

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the suggestion. A long time ago I had an indoor lemon tree and just wasn't doing well until I watered (occasionally) with cold coffee. I added the coffee to help with soil acidity levels and it exploded with growth and produced 3 sweet lemons. I may try this again.

    Hi Jeff. Great video as usual. I noticed that when you pot up new propagations you are using those pots with the long openings in them. Is that for better aeration?
    I’m very interested in who you like to get your plant content from on TH-cam. It’s fun to get a wide perspective of information.

    Hi Jeff, I disagree with moss rotting out the roots if left in the soil. I received a Hoya cutting rooted in moss, and I left 90% of it on as I could not take it off without damaging the roots (and it was a lot of moss). I placed it in a well-draining and chunky mix I made and the hoya is thriving! Absolutely thriving, I water only when the leaves get soft! So I've been adding a bit of moss to my small 2" pots to keep them damp a bit longer since those tend to need the most watering... Sometimes it's best to leave some moss in to not damage the roots, however to each their own!

    • @keithpugh7538
      @keithpugh7538 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did the same thing with a Hoya Crimson Queen, no issues. I didn’t remove the moss because I was afraid to damage the roots.

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey! Thanks for this comment and value everyone's personal experience. We can all learn from everyone....thats why I enjoy the comment section. I had a hoya not doing well previously (can't recall which one) and when I pulled it out of the soil it was a goner from rot root. Now it very well my have been my fault for not acting enough chunk into the mix lol or from the moss staying wet.
      If I'm potting into soil, I remove the moss. Now I've seen some people use moss, leca and perlite as a mix and I think I would like that and will probably try that out someday.
      Thanks and hope you stick around for more videos!

    Curious what you do that has you working 12 hour shifts? I realize that might be too personal so I won’t be offended if it’s private! I can imagine that makes plant care more challenging (at least part of the week!). Pretty amazing that you can still maintain a balance. Or perhaps it’s fairly easy once you get the hang of it! …I realize this is off-topic but I loved the planty content also!😂

    The clarinervium looks similar to mine. One leaf chopped off at the bottom 😂 tho i think mine trying to put out new leaf. I've been struggling with clarinervium, i bought one at early 2020, and it's so hard to make it happy, everytime it put out a new leaf it's either rotted off or dried off.

    Hey Jeff, I finally just bought my first Anthurium Clarinervium and with it being so expensive I do not want to do anything to affect it. I am looking into what kind of pot is best for it. How did the self-watering pot end up working out for you?

    • @EverythingPlants
      @EverythingPlants  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mine are all still kind of adjusting. The newest leaves on all my anthurium are deformed haha. Anthurium love a chunky mix with good air flow, so I actually repot some into a heavy orchid bark (with perlite and charcoal) mix with some soil in a terracotta pot. I'm still learning about these plants. Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

    I think I’m done with moss…I had a monstera node with a small leaf which was looking good under plastic waiting for roots. I took cover off to give it some air next to my kitchen sink and I noticed a bunch of tiny white bugs all over it 😮 so out to the compost it went. I think bugs can really hide out in moss and moss poles.I have a potting bench in my sunroom but funny thing is I never have any space to work. 🪴🪴🪴

    • @lgarden7086
      @lgarden7086 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@otisschroeder9790 I wasn’t positive it was mealy bugs…they were moving very fast and I wasn’t taking any chances on that one leaf that wasn’t developing any roots. I’m just glad I placed it right where I could see it before they spread. You’re right I could have tried, I just didn’t want to. I purchased a plant with mealy bugs once (first time I ever had mealies) and treated it successfully even after they said I could return it; they were larger and didn’t move much.

    I know this video was uploaded a year ago but I'm watching it now and wanted to share the experience I have with self watering pots. they move the moisture to whereever the cord is, so when the cord sits on bottom of the pots, it can only wick water to that point. if we want the whole substrate to be able to get water, the cord has to come all the way to top of the pot
