@@explorer47422 In fact, the ability to split off and talk in pairs/smaller groups is PART OF THE RULES as well! That's a huge part of the game, being able to share and receive information that only _some_ of you know (maybe you reveal a super powerful role to only SOME people so when you die in the night you're pretty sure they wanted to kill you, etc etc.). And for the evil team, the fact that _only the demon_ gets showed the 3 bluffs (characters not in use) and wants to talk in private with their minions to share those bluffs, all without seeming sus somehow.

I thought it was GENIUS picking Saint to throw them off her being the Monk, and Spencer was sooo cute reminding her lol. AND THEN SHE PICKED AMANDA INSTEAD OF COURTNEY LIKE GIRL WHY!! I woulda axed her on the spot but luckily they all knew no one in their right mind would save Amanda EXCEPT Angela 🤣🤣
It wasn't even such a bad move to save the soldier (even though Angela didn't mean to). If the soldier gets poisened, they *can* be killed in the night. If they actually went off to (all) have private conversations during the daytime, Arasha and Tommy could've coordinated that.
well she was very tired and distracted during the initial "going over the rules" meeting because of her baby so it's very understandable that she'd mess up (i'm jokingly referencing the mechanical baby video)
I would like give a shoutout to Trevor for sussing out Tommy from the start. Trevor is very smart, especially when it comes to these types of games. Also, I have so much respect to Trevor for not talking over other people. He is an absolute gem and no one else ever believes him or trusts him and it breaks my heart. Stay strong Trevor, you’re doing great man!
Trevor also is very aware that he needs to respect their privacy (ex: he didn’t out Angela as the monk because he didn’t want to be rude and put her in danger)
I love Spencer narrating except when he forgets certain roles' rules lol, like, did Anthony ever get to know anybody's role? Or like in the Werewolf one where suddenly Chanse's seer didn't do anything at night lol. 😭 It's a lot to keep up with though and Spencer is doing good!! It's probs really stressful doing it lol.
This new couch is perfect for these games. They all get to sit on it, and no one has to really lean over to be seen or heard, and no one has to sit behind anyone else. And if the game needs someone like spencer to be the narrator, they can easily walk around. It is perfect. Whoever chose the couch did an amazing job.
Arasha's crazy play wasn't given enough credit. Not only was she poisoning Courtney every night, she did that to make Courtney think she was drunk because Courtney started to suspect she was being poisone. To reinforce that, Arasha started to claim that maybe she was being poisoned, not only throwing people off her scent but also making Courtney doubt her entire role because she might've just been drunk since two people can't be poisoned at the same time.
I love Arasha’s strategy in these games. If Chanse is best at solving the riddles, Arasha is best at consistently weaving details into her story. I think over time she’s started to also use the way the others perceive her to her advantage, being more outspoken only when it benefits her more, which she probably picked up on after the Werewolf video. Well done to her, I just love seeing smart (and gorgeous) brown women in media 💕
For future games, some really critical info for the story teller: Unlike in werewolf, just because a execution vote passes, doesn't mean the nominated is executed instantly. There should still be opportunity for other nominations (each player can only nominate and be nominated once per day). If votes are tied, them would be no execution otherwise, it's whichever player got the most votes in any one nomination that day who dies. Basically after a vote passes to execute, give the players a chance to talk and make a counter nomination, but usually not a lot of time. This would have given Tommy half a chance to manage the sudden suspicion on him especially as a number of players said they weren't comfortable with the vote so he absolutely could have tied something up. Splitting off for private chats is also a good idea, but probably a bit much of headache in terms of production. Hope you guys play a lot more of this as it improves so much as the same group gets more experienced with the game and how each other play. It could comfortably work as a longer running series.
There's also usually some discussion before going to voting on the nomination. Most people seem to allow some private side conversations as well, which really adds to the game (but is a pain to film for TH-cam, of course, though NRB does do this).
All of this. They could probably make it work having designated spots like NRB does for their in person games. It can really help the evil team or even the good team if they have people they can trust.
Yeah, there were too many things going on in this game that didn’t perfectly line up with the rules. I couldn’t finish the video. I was getting too irritated. Hopefully they enjoyed it and try it again though.
Chanse balanced his role as "the one people will listen to because he knows what's up" really well. He didn't become overconfident and unintentially lead people astray. Ian tends to do that (Shayne and Damien as well) because they know games and/or has a tendency to be listened to in general. But they speculate as if they are "a normal player" because they don't view themselves like that. Chanse seems very aware of how he phrases things to point out what he knows and what he thinks, without bringing people along a single track too much. He's a great person in these games
Honestly I feel like anyone who knows anything about this game is just wincing along with Chanse because not only did both of the evil people out themselves almost immediately (unintentionally obvi) but Trevor somehow didn't pick up on the fact that Angela was trying to protect her role as monk because it makes her vulnerable; also why did Trevor say who the two people weree omfg
@@amanshareef7971 You have to remember this is their first time playing this game in the middle of a work day in a work week when they've shot dozens of other videos and played many other games. You can't expect them to know all the proper strategies or even all the rules that fast.
@@ceeceepg Yeah, just one of the role misconceptions. I kept wincing at Tommy's Chef Bluff, claiming "learning 2 evil people are in the game is so helpful" when that is so not what it does.
Amanda not revealing that she was the soldier at the beginning was so smart. Chanse was right that she revealed it at the perfect time. If the demon doesn't know who the soldier is when they attack and they unknowingly choose to attack them, they are basically 'wasting' a turn for attacking which is good for the good guys.
Chanse also stopped her from revealing it the day before. She was going to reveal it and he told her not to, and Amanda said I'm these games she always reveals to early and regrets it. Cut to her getting picked and revealing it the turn after revealing it at the PERFECT time. Chanse really is good at this game, they definitely need to bring him back next time they play.
@@ameliarose47 Chanse and Arasha are the best at these games, the former being better I feel (tho Arasha could just be crippled by the stigma that she's always lying even though Chanse is kinda just as good as her). They should always take point in this series. I love Anthony, he's the reason I got into Smosh again, but he's way too trusting and doesn't think too far ahead in these, unfortunately.
She still should not have revealed her role. The moment you say you're the Soldier, the demon will stop trying to kill you and try to get you executed instead. You have to say you're the Soldier only if you know for sure the demon already knows, and they didn't because there's a monk at play that could protect someone. As long as the demon doesn't know you're the Soldier, every turn is a potential fail to kill. Chanse and Arasha played amazingly and hopefully they will learn the game because they'll be brutal. It was very funny to see someone claim Chef and say they got a 2 and that's useless, Chef gets the amount of pairs of evil players sitting together so 2 means there's 3 evil players side by side xD I would have instantly thought he was drunk or poisoned. And Arasha claimed investigator and said she had inconsistent info on night 2 or 3 but investigator only gets information on night 1, luckily nobody realized that :)
Watching Chanse and Trevor play these kinds of games is so fun because they’re both quite good. Also, I really like the option to skip ahead to play along. That’s super cool!
We're nearly a year on with Anthony back, and it is so heartwarming seeing him have such effortless chemistry with his Smosh stepchildren. You can tell he's really comfortable there now

I think Trevor and Courtney deserve so much credit for just vibing off that Tommy and Arasha were bad. Courtney only got thrown when she got bad info, but like both of them? I am proud of their brains.

Botc player here and I just want to say that the fortune tellers ability doesn't actually find evil players, it specifically finds the demon (but has one other player falsely register as the demon) which is important because minions won't register. Also thought I'd explain the usefulness of the ravenkeeper since it was questioned, usually the ravenkeeper will claim to be a more powerful role like the undertaker or fortuneteller to make the demon want to kill them, thus activating their ability. This both makes them get a use of their power, and it also protects players with powerful roles since the demon doesn't want to kill the ravenkeeper. If the ravenkeeper finds out a good players role, they know to trust them, if they pick someone evil they immediately know who it is and what ability they have and can start piecing together the game. It's quite good.
Day 4 was crazy. I still can't pinpoint the exact moment when it switched from Angela fighting for her life into convincing everyone it was Tommy. What a beautiful chaos. Thank goodness for Washer Woman Trevor.
I picture this as a movie with the washer woman as the protagonist. At the end, after putting together every information she had gathered and everything she had witnessed while hanging laundry, she tries to convince the villagers that the alleged chef is actually the demon. And somewhere in the beginning of the movie there is a foreshadowing that reflects Trevor's very first suspicion.
For those who aren't familiar with the rules of the game, I just want to clarify real quick: Tommy got the Chef role wrong, it is not even REMOTELY as bad of a role as he thought it was. It's actually generally considered one of the best roles on Trouble Brewing (the edition that they are playing). It's understandable that he would make the mistake - it's his first time playing and he was thrown into one of the hardest positions in the game and had to make things up on the fly. But the Chef's ability is not that they learn how many evil players there are, their ability is that they learn how many evil PAIRS there are. In other words, they learn how many sets of evil players are sat next to each other. For example, in this game, there was 1 pair of evil players, because Tommy and Arasha were sitting next to each other. The reason the Chef is so good is because if you figure out an evil player, the Chef information tells you whether or not you should think that player's neighbors are evil as well.
I don’t want to “um, actually” their first game too hard (especially like… he got the demon in their first game, lot of pressure) but yeah that chef claim was rough. If he understood the role and through out “chef 0” it would have added one more piece of misinformation. I hope they play again and keep getting a feel for the details, there is SO much in this game.
@@ExactApproachLOL To be fair, I think the Chef is badly worded and mentioning adjacency more explicitly would go a long way towards making it understandable at a glance. At least the first time I looked at TB, it wasn't immediately clear to me what its description means until someone talked about it. Imo, for a second time, a more spaced out game with the room for private chats and asking the ST for help understanding their bluffs (and roles in general) would have probably gone a long way towards making the learning process smoother. As it is, the Imp would have been cooked (pun intended) on day 1 if there was a face-up outsider other than the Recluse in the game. But since everyone was playing for the first time and equally confused, it all worked out. An entirely "open forum" game of Clocktower is not something you see every day. :)
Oh Hi Rumi surprised to see you here. Also agreed. Chef is not adjancy. They learn how many pair of evils sits together. Tommy + Arasha is 1 pair. Tommy + Arasha + Anthony will be 2. Or lets says if theres 2 minion instead and there is a recluse. Tommy + Arasha 1. Example: Trevor (recluse) + Angela (minion) can be another pair. Also to add on to this game the FT aldo got things wrong, they dont learn who was evil but they learn if they are the demon. Also for this game, i think the Storyteller didnt do anything for the fortune teller being poisoned.
The little shadow guy at the bottom, while Spencer is explaining that there's a demon who takes human form, was a nice little touch by the editor. Love that.
trevor was the real mvp here, but having the truthteller sitting directly by angela was interesting. i love angela's passionate outbursts, but poor trevor had the right idea all along and it took amanda calming things down for him to speak his peace. i need more of this game biblically.

Nah Chanse was right, Trevor was just being dumb that moment. He didn't thought that BOTH Angela and Amanda could be good AND that if he put anyone of those two forward as nominations it is automatically gonna give the bad guys an advantage. That's why it wad so good that both Chanse and Angela talked it out so that Trevor and Amanda could also team up with them.

I loved Tommy marinating them about the imp knowing about unused roles, the non-existent drunk role causing trevor to gaslight himself and the sudden, almost violent click in their heads at the end. What a game

YES! I First watched the video skipping the Nights and wasn't sure he was the Imp, so when he did that I thought it was a really weird way of making a Chef's hat, then I realized they looked like horns!

I had the same thought! NRB take this game so seriously and honestly, sometimes it's too strategic for me to follow and still enjoy. Smosh has half the amount of player and it's their first time so it was actually refreshing to watch.
Anthony saying the Ravenkeeper seemed like a useless role so he might as well reveal himself, it won't affect anything, nearly made me fall out of my chair 😂 This was a very chaotic game and I'm honestly worried bc historically BotC/Pandemonium has acted very nasty to anyone who doesn't play their way. A fun game made by a very uptight, bitter, hateful company. Considering they gave Smosh this game as a gift hopefully they don't spew vitriol the same way as they did when Yogscast played it, bc I really enjoyed this video and would like to see them play again. BotC's spiteful gatekeeping habit might jeopardize that if the company throws another tantrum :,^)
To be fair, it was their first time playing and I wouldn't expect them to know the roles inside and out and what the best way to play is. Hopefully they make more videos of BotC and learn more strategy. But then again, it is funny how chaotic it all is.

Alternatively, the game developers "The Pandemonium Institute" have broadcasted games as well. You might have to dig specifically for Trouble Brewing videos if you want to learn the basics (as most games have advanced or even experimental characters in them, causing a whole extra set of rules to be learned; like Madness.)
There are so many rules. The good news is, if they keep playing the game and stick to 'Trouble Brewing'. The rules reinforce themselves through patterns of play (at least with new players).
@@alexmiller9249 The problem is a lot of the characters were played out incorrectly (unless if that is what you were referring to). They need to refer to the wiki and have a (preferably experienced) CO ST before running this again so that way it is showcased as it is. Again, great that they are showing the game, but this felt misleading.
Respect to this storyteller for their first run. But it would be great to have an experienced storyteller run this for them. There were a number of rule mistakes and things that were run incorrectly, but again, it's a tricky game to run for the first time!
Angela figuring out that it was Tommy and Arasha before everyone else was honestly crazy. She was spot on even though before that she messed up by saving Amanda. 😅
It would be cool to see them play blood on the clocktower with private conversations. I think having everyone talking together kind of limits the game, although it was still great to watch!
100%! It’s hard to produce but completely opens up the game with different world views and shared info. With everyone talking together it’s a lot harder to pull off individual plays
I second this! It’s one of the most important and unique aspects of the game. I get that it’s harder to film but channels like No Rolls Barred have done it.
I love blood on the clocktower and the private conversations are what make it. However seeing new people play and mess up was very funny too. I need a slayer scarlet woman game next as that would be amazing.
Would love to see them play it for real where they get up and walk around and have side conversations! Obviously a tougher video to produce but it's such a huge piece of what sets Blood on the Clocktower apart from other social deception games. Let Arasha shine!!!
It works so well in these kind of games. It gets a little iffy when there are too few playing so this was lovely. And a great balance of personalities in this one as well.

They take the game really passionately and even have players split up into small groups during the day session to have private conversations so everyone is able to to gather a lot more information in the day phase.
If there are any future videos where the chef is in play, the chef doesn’t see how many evil roles there are. The chef knows how many pairs of evil roles there are sitting next to each other. For example: since Arasha and Tommy were sitting next to each other, there is one pair. This can also get interesting when a recluse is sitting next to a minion or demon because a recluse shows up as an evil role.
For years every time they would remodel the set I thought the furniture they chose looked so uncomfortable and was a struggle for them to film but this couch looks so comfy and makes it so much easier for them to play, especially a game like this, great job!

Yeah, it's always jarring watching new players play and seeing metas develop in real time. The fact that the Fortune Teller just outed her role publicly on day 1 is wild. It's funny to me that even the slightest about of bluffing caught them off guard - Angela's Saint bluff was genuinely a really smart way to stay alive and not get killed by the demon, but because they don't yet have the experience to know why good players would bluff like that, it almost caused more harm to the good team in the middle game as they tried to work out why Angela was lying.
@@bowmain1577 First off No Rolls Barred is probably the most popular and highest production value on the in-person games. The players are also mostly actors or comedians. If you look them up on TH-cam with the name of the game, a lot of the newer videos include roles and mechanics that might be confusing so I recommend watching older videos first. Then you have Noobs on the Gooftower which is ran by comedian Chris Grace and often features some from the NRB cast. And then there is the official BOTC TH-cam channel, The Grimoire, ElixirElise, Arif, Jams on the channel Gen Con and probably more I’m forgetting. It gets really interesting, complex and exciting, I highly recommend getting into the game. (I’m aware this sounds like an ad but I swear it’s not lol I’m just an enthusiastic fan)
@@bowmain1577 The channel No Rolls Barred has a long running series aimed at people less familiar with the game. There's several dozen games there. Once you have more experience, other channels like The Pandemonium Institute, CTBOTC, Patters, etc have channels specifically focuses on Clocktower, but those channels generally expect you to come in to the games with a certain knowledge already, so I wouldn't quite recommend them for absolute beginners.
@@Ruminations09 Just adding for those that don't know, that The Pandemonium Institute is the publisher of BOTC, and Ben the Storyteller for NRB's game is also from that company, so there's real good reason that NRB's videos are a really good onboarding study for people who are new to the game. One of the people that made the game is essentially running their game for them and providing player tips to both the audience and the NRB players.

I'm not neurodivergent (at least i don't think I am) but english isn't my first language and I often have trouble focusing so sometimes I can't understand what someone says when there's cross-talk etc. Videos without sibtitles are almost unwatchable for me because I get frustrated and can't focus properly on what's happening when there's something I didn't catch. Thankfully the auto-subtitles are now pretty good but I really appreciate the Smosh team for dishing out proper ones. They're the best.
Trevor’s deduction skills in this was spot on. I love that the first round he hit the nail on the head with Tommy being evil. Also Angela doing the most Angela thing and saving Amanda who was the only one that couldn’t be killed by the demon was hilarious .

I watch a TON of people who play Blood on the Clocktower enough that they’re basically professional, so watching people discover this game and how wonderful it is and be silly and make mistakes is really refreshing My one thing I’d love to see is private conversations of some sorts because it makes the game so much easier for the evil team to have a chance :) Loved this tho

Honestly, I could see them doing a thing with like screen recording text messages or something along those lines, or just having them physically pull each other aside, but having it just cut is bizarre because we miss so much context. *And by cut, I mean the fact that they have the conversations in the first place if they don't want the context to be revealed.
Oh yes, this should be a series. I feel like there's such a great wish fulfilment thing going on here for all of us, in terms of 'reliably having a group of 8 friends to explore this game with'
I love the editor giving Trever props the whole time. He played this exactly right given the what he was told and how the people were acting around him. Trevor, Amanda, Chanse, and Courtney were locked in the whole time and I’d love to see them play again.
I love seeing the little animations that the editors have started putting in. Maybe it's been like that for the whole time... but I definitely love to see them and appreciate them.
Trevor was great in this video. He, Courtney, Chanse, and Arasha are usually really fun to watch with these mafia-type games because they know how the game works and are good at lying
@@ghost-wl3pm The ravenkeeper is a role that needs to be killed by the demon in order to get information. So you don't want the demon to know you are the ravenkeeper and try different tactics in order to make the demon kill you in the night, eg by claiming a powerful role.
@@ghost-wl3pm The other comment explained the role well. But just to expand even more, generally a public hard claim of Ravenkeeper is just going to ensure that player never dies via the demon unless evil coordinates a poisoned kill. Because that degree of confirmation can be super powerful--either you build a confirmation chain with another good player or you identify a demon/minion AND their actual role. So the last thing evil is gonna want to do is risk the RK getting sober and healthy info in most scenarios. And living Ravenkeepers tend to be good people for evil to try and push on as being a demon bluff later in the game too.
Yeah, for a first game, they handled several things really well, but it’s hard to see the real value in some roles without getting a feel for the game. Like, Virgin is super strong for confirmation, but I bet it would be seen as a bad/useless ability until you see it happen and “get it”. I hope we get to see them play again and have those “OHHHH” moments.
I watched this once skipping the nights and now I'm watching it againt and it's so fun how accurate some accusations were at the first two days. And Tommy played amazing pretending he didn't understand some rules for the Imp. I would love to see you play this game again!
This is a game that gets better the more a group plays it. One note… the first passed vote isn’t meant to be a kill, there can be several passed votes and the higher vote is executed. Looking forward to next episode!
I think for Smosh's iteration, to make sure they don't go over two hours, they had to do this, is my theory. If not, they can start doing it the next game. Just a side note for some of us watching, a lot of "mistakes" we see might be intended to cut time. Not all the time though lol
The one thing that is glaringly missing but ia done for time(I'm pretty sure) is splitting off in groups. With a super thinky and detectivy game like this you need the time to catch individuals alone, and evil needs time to come up with schemes

I do hope they keep going with it, and the insta-execution was the only real thing that I think would crash future games (good/evil just racing to get the first passed vote… actually… maybe that’s an interesting outsider ability…)
Cool video! Just a tip for a possible next time regarding voting. If a vote passes for a player to be executed, they are instead “About To Die” (or on the chopping block, whatever you prefer). More nominations can occur, but the amount of votes to pass must exceed the amount of votes of the player About To Die. If that passes, the voted player is About To Die and the previous player is safe. If it ties, neither player is About To Die. The Storyteller can ask for a final call for nominations and then countdown from 5. If there’s no nominations, end the day. The player currently About To Die is then executed and dies.
A rule clarification I think is worth mentioning, but at the end of the day it's up to the Storyteller how the game is run, is this: - Once a vote has passed to execute someone, they are put forward onto the "chopping block", but you can still nominate someone else and if the amount of votes match, then the execution fails and neither is executed. You can still make nominations after this, but cannot nominate anyone who has previously been voted up. However, if the number of votes don't match, then whoever has the most will be executed (you still need enough players past the threshold to vote "Yes) I think it would be worth watching NRB playing this game, the production quality is quite high and they do give a lot of insight into the rules and how the roles work in between rounds.
@@randrfan1 I love Ben, and I REALLY love how active he is in running the game for new players. But I think *some* play groups should also happen like this one - where everyone including the Storyteller are newbies to the game. Because the fact of the matter is, you can't start a new group without having a newbie Storyteller. And they will make mistakes, but that's how you improve. All things considered, Spencer actually ran this really well considering it's his first time running it. There was only 1 major rule mistake he made, which is much better than most first time STs.
I think Spencer did an okay job, but he needs to go and watch the 'How to play' video section on the official Blood on the Clocktower TH-cam channel. It would benefit the game a lot because this game wasn't done justice - the game deserves to be played properly.

Regular BOTC player and Storyteller here - one nomination does not end the day. The players can continue to nominate until the storyteller ends the day. You need half of living players' number to pass it, but it can be surpassed. If two people get the same number of votes, no one is up for execution and any other nominations must surpass _that_ number. It's one of the main differences to other social deduction games - one nomination is never the end, unless a character like the virgin is nominated (whose ability is if a townsfolk nominates them, that player is executed); execution, but not all deaths, end the day phase. Hope y'all play again, been waiting for this group to play it since the game came out

@@borahbros1664 Private chats are essentially standard and expected in Clocktower, but they are not required by the rules. Some Storytellers (particularly those who are used to Mafia or Werewolf, where private conversations aren't allowed) don't allow private chats, but the overwhelming majority of play groups do have private chats. Personally, I think private meetings are a core part of what makes Clocktower Clocktower, but it's not actually against the rules in the same way the nomination thing is.

@@explorer47422 In fact, the ability to split off and talk in pairs/smaller groups is PART OF THE RULES as well! That's a huge part of the game, being able to share and receive information that only _some_ of you know (maybe you reveal a super powerful role to only SOME people so when you die in the night you're pretty sure they wanted to kill you, etc etc.). And for the evil team, the fact that _only the demon_ gets showed the 3 bluffs (characters not in use) and wants to talk in private with their minions to share those bluffs, all without seeming sus somehow.

Arasha's crazy play wasn't given enough credit. Not only was she poisoning Courtney every night, she did that to make Courtney think she was drunk because Courtney started to suspect she was being poisone. To reinforce that, Arasha started to claim that maybe she was being poisoned, not only throwing people off her scent but also making Courtney doubt her entire role because she might've just been drunk since two people can't be poisoned at the same time.

I love Arasha’s strategy in these games. If Chanse is best at solving the riddles, Arasha is best at consistently weaving details into her story. I think over time she’s started to also use the way the others perceive her to her advantage, being more outspoken only when it benefits her more, which she probably picked up on after the Werewolf video. Well done to her, I just love seeing smart (and gorgeous) brown women in media 💕

For future games, some really critical info for the story teller:
Unlike in werewolf, just because a execution vote passes, doesn't mean the nominated is executed instantly. There should still be opportunity for other nominations (each player can only nominate and be nominated once per day). If votes are tied, them would be no execution otherwise, it's whichever player got the most votes in any one nomination that day who dies.
Basically after a vote passes to execute, give the players a chance to talk and make a counter nomination, but usually not a lot of time.
This would have given Tommy half a chance to manage the sudden suspicion on him especially as a number of players said they weren't comfortable with the vote so he absolutely could have tied something up.
Splitting off for private chats is also a good idea, but probably a bit much of headache in terms of production.
Hope you guys play a lot more of this as it improves so much as the same group gets more experienced with the game and how each other play. It could comfortably work as a longer running series.

There's also usually some discussion before going to voting on the nomination. Most people seem to allow some private side conversations as well, which really adds to the game (but is a pain to film for TH-cam, of course, though NRB does do this).
All of this. They could probably make it work having designated spots like NRB does for their in person games. It can really help the evil team or even the good team if they have people they can trust.
Yeah, there were too many things going on in this game that didn’t perfectly line up with the rules. I couldn’t finish the video. I was getting too irritated. Hopefully they enjoyed it and try it again though.

Chanse balanced his role as "the one people will listen to because he knows what's up" really well. He didn't become overconfident and unintentially lead people astray. Ian tends to do that (Shayne and Damien as well) because they know games and/or has a tendency to be listened to in general. But they speculate as if they are "a normal player" because they don't view themselves like that. Chanse seems very aware of how he phrases things to point out what he knows and what he thinks, without bringing people along a single track too much. He's a great person in these games
Honestly I feel like anyone who knows anything about this game is just wincing along with Chanse because not only did both of the evil people out themselves almost immediately (unintentionally obvi) but Trevor somehow didn't pick up on the fact that Angela was trying to protect her role as monk because it makes her vulnerable; also why did Trevor say who the two people weree omfg

@@ceeceepg Yeah, just one of the role misconceptions. I kept wincing at Tommy's Chef Bluff, claiming "learning 2 evil people are in the game is so helpful" when that is so not what it does.
Amanda not revealing that she was the soldier at the beginning was so smart. Chanse was right that she revealed it at the perfect time. If the demon doesn't know who the soldier is when they attack and they unknowingly choose to attack them, they are basically 'wasting' a turn for attacking which is good for the good guys.
Chanse also stopped her from revealing it the day before. She was going to reveal it and he told her not to, and Amanda said I'm these games she always reveals to early and regrets it. Cut to her getting picked and revealing it the turn after revealing it at the PERFECT time. Chanse really is good at this game, they definitely need to bring him back next time they play.

I love Anthony, he's the reason I got into Smosh again, but he's way too trusting and doesn't think too far ahead in these, unfortunately.
She still should not have revealed her role. The moment you say you're the Soldier, the demon will stop trying to kill you and try to get you executed instead. You have to say you're the Soldier only if you know for sure the demon already knows, and they didn't because there's a monk at play that could protect someone. As long as the demon doesn't know you're the Soldier, every turn is a potential fail to kill.
Chanse and Arasha played amazingly and hopefully they will learn the game because they'll be brutal. It was very funny to see someone claim Chef and say they got a 2 and that's useless, Chef gets the amount of pairs of evil players sitting together so 2 means there's 3 evil players side by side xD I would have instantly thought he was drunk or poisoned.
And Arasha claimed investigator and said she had inconsistent info on night 2 or 3 but investigator only gets information on night 1, luckily nobody realized that :)

Hi! Botc player here and I just want to say that the fortune tellers ability doesn't actually find evil players, it specifically finds the demon (but has one other player falsely register as the demon) which is important because minions won't register.
Also thought I'd explain the usefulness of the ravenkeeper since it was questioned, usually the ravenkeeper will claim to be a more powerful role like the undertaker or fortuneteller to make the demon want to kill them, thus activating their ability. This both makes them get a use of their power, and it also protects players with powerful roles since the demon doesn't want to kill the ravenkeeper. If the ravenkeeper finds out a good players role, they know to trust them, if they pick someone evil they immediately know who it is and what ability they have and can start piecing together the game. It's quite good.
Day 4 was crazy. I still can't pinpoint the exact moment when it switched from Angela fighting for her life into convincing everyone it was Tommy. What a beautiful chaos. Thank goodness for Washer Woman Trevor.
I picture this as a movie with the washer woman as the protagonist. At the end, after putting together every information she had gathered and everything she had witnessed while hanging laundry, she tries to convince the villagers that the alleged chef is actually the demon. And somewhere in the beginning of the movie there is a foreshadowing that reflects Trevor's very first suspicion.
For those who aren't familiar with the rules of the game, I just want to clarify real quick: Tommy got the Chef role wrong, it is not even REMOTELY as bad of a role as he thought it was. It's actually generally considered one of the best roles on Trouble Brewing (the edition that they are playing).
It's understandable that he would make the mistake - it's his first time playing and he was thrown into one of the hardest positions in the game and had to make things up on the fly.
But the Chef's ability is not that they learn how many evil players there are, their ability is that they learn how many evil PAIRS there are. In other words, they learn how many sets of evil players are sat next to each other.
For example, in this game, there was 1 pair of evil players, because Tommy and Arasha were sitting next to each other.
The reason the Chef is so good is because if you figure out an evil player, the Chef information tells you whether or not you should think that player's neighbors are evil as well.
I don’t want to “um, actually” their first game too hard (especially like… he got the demon in their first game, lot of pressure) but yeah that chef claim was rough. If he understood the role and through out “chef 0” it would have added one more piece of misinformation. I hope they play again and keep getting a feel for the details, there is SO much in this game.

At least the first time I looked at TB, it wasn't immediately clear to me what its description means until someone talked about it.
Imo, for a second time, a more spaced out game with the room for private chats and asking the ST for help understanding their bluffs (and roles in general) would have probably gone a long way towards making the learning process smoother. As it is, the Imp would have been cooked (pun intended) on day 1 if there was a face-up outsider other than the Recluse in the game. But since everyone was playing for the first time and equally confused, it all worked out. An entirely "open forum" game of Clocktower is not something you see every day. :)

Chef is not adjancy. They learn how many pair of evils sits together. Tommy + Arasha is 1 pair. Tommy + Arasha + Anthony will be 2. Or lets says if theres 2 minion instead and there is a recluse.

Example:
Trevor (recluse) + Angela (minion) can be another pair.
Also to add on to this game the FT aldo got things wrong, they dont learn who was evil but they learn if they are the demon.
Also for this game, i think the Storyteller didnt do anything for the fortune teller being poisoned.
Chefs will put role but often lie or don't say the number so that the demon can't work around the info

To be fair, it was their first time playing and I wouldn't expect them to know the roles inside and out and what the best way to play is. Hopefully they make more videos of BotC and learn more strategy. But then again, it is funny how chaotic it all is.

Alternatively, the game developers "The Pandemonium Institute" have broadcasted games as well. You might have to dig specifically for Trouble Brewing videos if you want to learn the basics (as most games have advanced or even experimental characters in them, causing a whole extra set of rules to be learned; like Madness.)
There are so many rules. The good news is, if they keep playing the game and stick to 'Trouble Brewing'. The rules reinforce themselves through patterns of play (at least with new players).
@@alexmiller9249 The problem is a lot of the characters were played out incorrectly (unless if that is what you were referring to). They need to refer to the wiki and have a (preferably experienced) CO ST before running this again so that way it is showcased as it is. Again, great that they are showing the game, but this felt misleading.
Respect to this storyteller for their first run. But it would be great to have an experienced storyteller run this for them. There were a number of rule mistakes and things that were run incorrectly, but again, it's a tricky game to run for the first time!

It would be cool to see them play blood on the clocktower with private conversations. I think having everyone talking together kind of limits the game, although it was still great to watch!
100%! It’s hard to produce but completely opens up the game with different world views and shared info. With everyone talking together it’s a lot harder to pull off individual plays
I second this! It’s one of the most important and unique aspects of the game. I get that it’s harder to film but channels like No Rolls Barred have done it.
I love blood on the clocktower and the private conversations are what make it. However seeing new people play and mess up was very funny too. I need a slayer scarlet woman game next as that would be amazing.
As someone who knows nothing of the game, I think this was a good start to it. Adding more stuff when people get more in to it is probably the wisest.

They take the game really passionately and even have players split up into small groups during the day session to have private conversations so everyone is able to to gather a lot more information in the day phase.

If there are any future videos where the chef is in play, the chef doesn’t see how many evil roles there are. The chef knows how many pairs of evil roles there are sitting next to each other. For example: since Arasha and Tommy were sitting next to each other, there is one pair. This can also get interesting when a recluse is sitting next to a minion or demon because a recluse shows up as an evil role.
For years every time they would remodel the set I thought the furniture they chose looked so uncomfortable and was a struggle for them to film but this couch looks so comfy and makes it so much easier for them to play, especially a game like this, great job!

Yeah, it's always jarring watching new players play and seeing metas develop in real time. The fact that the Fortune Teller just outed her role publicly on day 1 is wild.
It's funny to me that even the slightest about of bluffing caught them off guard - Angela's Saint bluff was genuinely a really smart way to stay alive and not get killed by the demon, but because they don't yet have the experience to know why good players would bluff like that, it almost caused more harm to the good team in the middle game as they tried to work out why Angela was lying.
Where have you watched hundreds of games? This is the first time i've seen this game before. Love to see more on this
@@bowmain1577 First off No Rolls Barred is probably the most popular and highest production value on the in-person games. The players are also mostly actors or comedians. If you look them up on TH-cam with the name of the game, a lot of the newer videos include roles and mechanics that might be confusing so I recommend watching older videos first. Then you have Noobs on the Gooftower which is ran by comedian Chris Grace and often features some from the NRB cast. And then there is the official BOTC TH-cam channel, The Grimoire, ElixirElise, Arif, Jams on the channel Gen Con and probably more I’m forgetting. It gets really interesting, complex and exciting, I highly recommend getting into the game. (I’m aware this sounds like an ad but I swear it’s not lol I’m just an enthusiastic fan)
@@bowmain1577 The channel No Rolls Barred has a long running series aimed at people less familiar with the game. There's several dozen games there. Once you have more experience, other channels like The Pandemonium Institute, CTBOTC, Patters, etc have channels specifically focuses on Clocktower, but those channels generally expect you to come in to the games with a certain knowledge already, so I wouldn't quite recommend them for absolute beginners.
@@Ruminations09 Just adding for those that don't know, that The Pandemonium Institute is the publisher of BOTC, and Ben the Storyteller for NRB's game is also from that company, so there's real good reason that NRB's videos are a really good onboarding study for people who are new to the game. One of the people that made the game is essentially running their game for them and providing player tips to both the audience and the NRB players.
I want them to play this game so many more times. PLEASE, I've rewatched this one like three times. Give me more new episodes haha!

I'm not neurodivergent (at least i don't think I am) but english isn't my first language and I often have trouble focusing so sometimes I can't understand what someone says when there's cross-talk etc. Videos without sibtitles are almost unwatchable for me because I get frustrated and can't focus properly on what's happening when there's something I didn't catch. Thankfully the auto-subtitles are now pretty good but I really appreciate the Smosh team for dishing out proper ones. They're the best.

I watch a TON of people who play Blood on the Clocktower enough that they’re basically professional, so watching people discover this game and how wonderful it is and be silly and make mistakes is really refreshing
My one thing I’d love to see is private conversations of some sorts because it makes the game so much easier for the evil team to have a chance :) Loved this tho

Honestly, I could see them doing a thing with like screen recording text messages or something along those lines, or just having them physically pull each other aside, but having it just cut is bizarre because we miss so much context.
*And by cut, I mean the fact that they have the conversations in the first place if they don't want the context to be revealed.

I love the editor giving Trever props the whole time. He played this exactly right given the what he was told and how the people were acting around him. Trevor, Amanda, Chanse, and Courtney were locked in the whole time and I’d love to see them play again.
I love seeing the little animations that the editors have started putting in. Maybe it's been like that for the whole time... but I definitely love to see them and appreciate them.

@@ghost-wl3pm The ravenkeeper is a role that needs to be killed by the demon in order to get information. So you don't want the demon to know you are the ravenkeeper and try different tactics in order to make the demon kill you in the night, eg by claiming a powerful role.

But just to expand even more, generally a public hard claim of Ravenkeeper is just going to ensure that player never dies via the demon unless evil coordinates a poisoned kill. Because that degree of confirmation can be super powerful--either you build a confirmation chain with another good player or you identify a demon/minion AND their actual role. So the last thing evil is gonna want to do is risk the RK getting sober and healthy info in most scenarios. And living Ravenkeepers tend to be good people for evil to try and push on as being a demon bluff later in the game too.
Yeah, for a first game, they handled several things really well, but it’s hard to see the real value in some roles without getting a feel for the game. Like, Virgin is super strong for confirmation, but I bet it would be seen as a bad/useless ability until you see it happen and “get it”. I hope we get to see them play again and have those “OHHHH” moments.

I watched this once skipping the nights and now I'm watching it againt and it's so fun how accurate some accusations were at the first two days. And Tommy played amazing pretending he didn't understand some rules for the Imp. I would love to see you play this game again!

This is a game that gets better the more a group plays it. One note… the first passed vote isn’t meant to be a kill, there can be several passed votes and the higher vote is executed. Looking forward to next episode!

I think for Smosh's iteration, to make sure they don't go over two hours, they had to do this, is my theory. If not, they can start doing it the next game. Just a side note for some of us watching, a lot of "mistakes" we see might be intended to cut time. Not all the time though lol
The one thing that is glaringly missing but ia done for time(I'm pretty sure) is splitting off in groups. With a super thinky and detectivy game like this you need the time to catch individuals alone, and evil needs time to come up with schemes

I do hope they keep going with it, and the insta-execution was the only real thing that I think would crash future games (good/evil just racing to get the first passed vote… actually… maybe that’s an interesting outsider ability…)
Cool video! Just a tip for a possible next time regarding voting.
If a vote passes for a player to be executed, they are instead “About To Die” (or on the chopping block, whatever you prefer).
More nominations can occur, but the amount of votes to pass must exceed the amount of votes of the player About To Die.
If that passes, the voted player is About To Die and the previous player is safe. If it ties, neither player is About To Die.
The Storyteller can ask for a final call for nominations and then countdown from 5. If there’s no nominations, end the day.
The player currently About To Die is then executed and dies.
A rule clarification I think is worth mentioning, but at the end of the day it's up to the Storyteller how the game is run, is this:
- Once a vote has passed to execute someone, they are put forward onto the "chopping block", but you can still nominate someone else and if the amount of votes match, then the execution fails and neither is executed. You can still make nominations after this, but cannot nominate anyone who has previously been voted up.
However, if the number of votes don't match, then whoever has the most will be executed (you still need enough players past the threshold to vote "Yes)
I think it would be worth watching NRB playing this game, the production quality is quite high and they do give a lot of insight into the rules and how the roles work in between rounds.
Ben should come out and storytell for them if they play again because they really need an experienced storyteller
@@randrfan1 I love Ben, and I REALLY love how active he is in running the game for new players. But I think *some* play groups should also happen like this one - where everyone including the Storyteller are newbies to the game.
Because the fact of the matter is, you can't start a new group without having a newbie Storyteller. And they will make mistakes, but that's how you improve.
All things considered, Spencer actually ran this really well considering it's his first time running it. There was only 1 major rule mistake he made, which is much better than most first time STs.

I think Spencer did an okay job, but he needs to go and watch the 'How to play' video section on the official Blood on the Clocktower TH-cam channel. It would benefit the game a lot because this game wasn't done justice - the game deserves to be played properly.

Regular BOTC player and Storyteller here - one nomination does not end the day. The players can continue to nominate until the storyteller ends the day. You need half of living players' number to pass it, but it can be surpassed. If two people get the same number of votes, no one is up for execution and any other nominations must surpass _that_ number. It's one of the main differences to other social deduction games - one nomination is never the end, unless a character like the virgin is nominated (whose ability is if a townsfolk nominates them, that player is executed); execution, but not all deaths, end the day phase.

@@borahbros1664 Private chats are essentially standard and expected in Clocktower, but they are not required by the rules. Some Storytellers (particularly those who are used to Mafia or Werewolf, where private conversations aren't allowed) don't allow private chats, but the overwhelming majority of play groups do have private chats.
Personally, I think private meetings are a core part of what makes Clocktower Clocktower, but it's not actually against the rules in the same way the nomination thing is.
