I saw that interview recently, and "I can't give any praise" was Wang Yibo's response when he and Xiao Zhan were asked to praise their fans. It was not about Xiao Zhan. Yibo praised and complimented Zhan all the time, and Zhan complimented him too. Actually, their complimenting each other was almost like another form of (play) fighting, as they competed who would compliment the other more until one of them gave up (usually Xiao Zhan). But, if you know a bit more about Wang Yibo, you know that he is always very honest and direct in what he says, so most likely his praise was also real and completely honest. Also, I don't think their friendship was fake. I have seen many complete BTS videos, even ones where they didn't know that they were filmed and/or didn't know if those videos were ever going to be put out (many of those were unofficial and made public only much later). Most of it is just a normal process of filming/work and normal relationship between two colleages, but there is also a lot of play-fighting and obviously enjoying each other's company and also a lot of subtle things that show something more than being just colleagues/superficial acquaintances. All of that couldn't be acting. They were working too hard acting and filming for the drama to also act in all those BTS videos. That, and also their care for each other, especially Yibo's for Zhan, was really too different from usual "fan service". The reason why it's so different now is not that it was fake then and they simply didn't want to interact anymore after that. The real reasons are the crazy fans, the excessive fan wars and rumours, all the hate, the widespread prejudice against same sex relationships in China (or against any hint about it) and what all of that could do to their careers.
