Hilary Hahn's violin playing is faster than my internet connection
@Mckayla Kim _my_ internet 😭
Paganiniana: *exists*
WE NEED A LINGLINGIANA
we actually need one
LingLingiana is the opposite of Ling Ling
Ling Ling can play 40 hours a day
LingLingiana can play -40 hours a day
or perhaps it should be 40 hours long
Oh ! Other idea
Just like Mozart and Salieri
Ling Ling and LingLingiana hate each other
Ling Ling play the violin
LingLingiana play the viola ;-;
@Harold Slick you can play it quickly
Since Twoset forgot to put the links to the recordings, here they are in the same order Twoset put them:

I wonder how many notes a second was that in the last part of the 3rd movement of Barber.
Luis Sanchez You mean >15 pizz. a second?
He couldn't hold her bow. He isn't worthy. Its weight would drag him to the ground.
No but seriously i have never heard violin playing that fast.
How would Hillary play without her bow? Shouldve kept it with the beer

Brett: "I know it was a long episode"
I could hear them speaking about music for hours without being bored

So glad I found this channel. I'm sharing with everyone I know who has an iota of musical performance appreciation.
I learn soooo much about violin music from these videos. Hope they do more - many more.
@@wordjunkie289 Well here we are, one year on, and they're as prolific as ever. Don't know how they do it along with the prep and practicing.
So true
Midori is astounding!!! She's so kind too....had the fortune of being her accompanist's page-turner for the concert...so nerve-wracking, but definitely, the best seat 5 feet behind her on-stage (on a $10M+ violin no less). Topped off with attending the masterclass she gave that afternoon...definitely a day I'll never forget!
ahh you’re so lucky
Wow! But having to focus on page turning would have detracted from the experience/enjoyment, surely?

A parallel I’ve noticed between great virtuoso pianists and violinists from watching your video is the economy of movement. Everything is so efficient and I think that lends to making the performances look ‘easy/effortless’.
*Horowitz has entered the chat*
Yes, you’ll find that about sportsmen and women as well.
dude i'm no classical musician and even when i used to play the electric guitar i've heard of that. the greatest guitarists, the more technical ones, are the ones who move their hands the less.
maybe that's a string instrument thing
@@laura3003 The less time you spend moving between strings and moving your arm, the more effortless things are, you waste less energy.
That's why a LOT of distortion also helps for guitar shredders, you need to do way less to get your sound out, at the expense of having mistakes heard more
yeah. It makes you able to be more flexible in your playing because you're not limited by extra movement, you're quicker, cleaner, more efficient plus you have more stamina and you're actually able to emote more because you CAN put stuff on top.

@@alexsimmons8953 what do you mean, is he no longer doing okay?
I kind of wish they'd make a video with Midori. She's always been passionate about classical music and encouraging people to play the violin.
Twoset should do a History series where they discuss the lives of composers and explain some of their pieces
Yes
up
Agree
Yes please
BIG YES
"How rare is it to be able to hear the composer play his own piece?"
Agreed for legendary older composers. One of my favorites is looking up recordings of Rachmaninoff playing, and it's really breathtaking whether he's playing his own pieces or others (he played liszt's Hungarian rhapsody no 2 for example). His renditions tend to ignore the sheets, even his own, which I find fascinating. Interestingly he also wrote a piano version of liebesleid which has a recording of him playing.
Andrew Kristensen bruh it’s so short
Modern composers get to play/conduct their own pieces, but they aren’t well documented unlike the big ones. David Bruce makes this point here - although he doesn’t play instruments/conduct himself, he shows other composers like Adams not getting recognition in his premieres...
th-cam.com/video/DYRhz0dIefo/w-d-xo.html
@Andrew Kristensen TL;DR Rach was able to recorded his pieces, unlike other famous composers

Nr. 8 is actually "Liebesleid" instead of "Liebeslied". Lied is the German word for song while Leid is the German word of pain or suffering. And in case you also want to understand the first part, Liebe means love. So the title means something like "love pain" "pain of loving" etc.

3:52 - Nathan Milstein, Milstein Paganiniana. Modern-day ferocity coupled with old-school command of the music.
5:40 - Itzhak "The Sneltch" Perlman, Korngold Violin Concerto. His playing reminiscences the very human experience of love, and warmth.

8:30 - Janine Jansen, Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 2. A marriage of power and lyricism, strength and beauty.
9:52 - Marabella Steinbacher, Beethoven Violin Concerto. Melodic in the face of non-melody, and warmth in contrast to coldness.
11:41 - Hilary Hahn, Barber Violin Concerto. Immense speed and control, culminating to an awe-inspiring musical moment.
13:59 - Fritz Kreisler, Kreisler Liebesleid. A beautiful interpretation of his own work, not hesitating to fall out of strict musical time, and masterful articulation.

Eddy has done that on his channel.
Midori is a beast, I remember the first performance I every saw was in school, she played Tzigane and I remember just being floored by it, since Ravel is one of my favorite composers, and I was studying piano. It was interesting to see how similar his music is from instrument to instrument.
Talk about a beast.... there is a video of her breaking a violin string twice in the same piece, if you were not paying attention, you would not have even noticed it happened.

One of my favourite classical music performances in history is Jacqueline Du Pre playing the Elgar cello concerto. She really makes the music a part of her, and her cello and her almost look like they are one. I also think that another reason that I find the performance so moving is knowing the fact that she had to give up playing the cello when she was (I think) 27 due to multiple sclerosis. Every time I listen to her music I feel so hopeful about life and yet so sad. It's strange the certain emotions that you can only get from music.
also link to her performance cos I'm bored and should probably be practising
th-cam.com/video/UUgdbqt2ON0/w-d-xo.html
Yes! That’s one of my favourite recordings ever.
Yeah, du pre has one of the best Elgar recordings. You should also listen to du pre playin Dvorak cello concerto it’s amazing.
I love this piece soooo much. Did you see the ballet play they made based on her life???
@@withniejules2244 I saw it recently when they put it on yt- it was so beautiful
“Where did strings come from back then?” Looks like someone didn’t pay attention in Music History at Uni 😂 They were made from Gut, an animal intestine. Guitar strings and harp strings, with a majority of instrument strings, were made from animal intestine. There’s actually a story of the birth of Hermes, where, moments after he was born, killed a sheep and a tortoise, used the sheep’s tendons to form strings and bones for the neck, and tore open she tortoise shell and used it as a resonating chamber for the instrument. If I’m cursed with this knowledge then everyone is cursed with me
The changeover to metal strings happened during the Boomer generation. My mom (cellist) doesn't really like the new metal strings, they're harder on the fingertips. When I was doing Suzuki (a number of decades ago), I think two of my strings were metal and two were gut.

Honestly I learnt soo much about classical music and art as such during this time while binge watching all your videos... its insane how much knowledge I've gained while having fun as well without making it feel like a burden.... I keep saying this but sincerely mean it......thanks a lot for your hard work and effort, helping many of us in many indescribable ways!! Love
Well when referring to a musician's style in playing an instrument, it usually denotes how they interpret or how they would tackle a piece. If you've seen their old-school violin playing vs modern violin playing vid, it basically shows how different a musician tackles a piece.
A great example would be how some pianists tackle a piece. Take two recordings of two different pianists playing the same piece and you can spot differences in their playing, mostly in how they deal with dynamics and how they would play cadenzas. Like a certain phrase would be written for pianissimo but the musician has the choice whether they want to follow the score fully or put a little bit of their own personal flair to the piece.
Basically every artist has their style, like you can differentiate singers by their voice and style of singing, just because you are probably more used to hear singing in the everyday life. It is just practice and if you hear a lot of different violinists you can easily tell after a while which artist it is and how they play it, for example if they play a phrase a certain style while another violinist might play it completely different concerning the accents or the focus, the tempo etc and the artists develop a style which can be very distinctive. As well the technique Eddy and Brett are talking about, it's basically if you play violin you know what you have to do to produce a certain sound, so you know what technique the violinist is using when you hear the sound. Don't know if that helps :)
Samw here! I’ve learned so much from them! 🍪

One small vowel change, one huge change of meaning.
LING LING GRANGER oh okay. I don’t know. My reference is just the name written in the video ^^“
But in German a „love song“ doesn’t have to be happy or joyful. It can be sad and depressing as well depending on the background. (For example a „break up song“) So the two meanings mustn’t be that far apart. ^^“ (don’t know if it is the same in English?)

"Zapateado" is a reference to spanish dance with tap dance - "zapato" is shoe in Spanish :)

I love you guys so much!! Watching you get excited over performances is so great!
I love Two Set for bringing classical music, and specifically violin heavy classical music into the lives of so many people. I think what they are doing is nothing short of heroic I also believe Khachatryan is a giant in the making. But I can't believe they didn't put Oistrakh's Shostakovich 1's cadenza on this list. Oistrakh OWNS that cadenza.
For those who haven't seen his interpretation, please watch it. Shostakovich wrote this piece when he had fallen on the wrong side of the Soviet regime, and was living every day in fear of being exiled to some godforsaken Siberian gulag; never to return. Only someone who's lived through that same era, and dealt with the same horrors, can really pull it off. His interpretation is SO cold, so jagged and soul crushing, it's borderline savage. Just like the the time and place he was living in.
I admire Khachatryan for trying to find his own interpretation of this piece, and I believe he's done a fantastic job. But sometimes, the bar is just set too damn high.
“Holy Moly!”

Me: 👀 -stares at Brett's cowlick at the back of his head-
Twoset has tought me so much about classical music thank you
I just love this and the previous video - not just for the performances but their reactions are so relatable. When you see someone just NAIL something that you REALLY, truly understand is remarkable - that delight you feel - it's just so pure. You smile. You laugh. It's a great feeling.
Yo, that bit at 2:30 onwards, literally cannot stop the chills continuously wracking my body. That passage dug deep into my spine and electrocuted me.

I love listening to the violin in classical music, but TwoSetViolin made me appreciate the nuances in the music, and how difficult it is to play the violin to play good music. And for that, I thank you TwoSetViolin!!!
This video is so wonderful that I almost can’t believe that I couldn’t see it on my TH-cam algorithms until now at 8 months following your post! You guys have such beautiful taste in music!!!! 💕🧸💕🧸💕
And, again, I followed the advice of this video and listened to these 8 great and amazing peroformances. Thank you again, TwoSetViolin for the recomendations and thank you, Manuel Martin, for providing the links to the pieces.
I really love the episode that “Do all the musicians think the same?” Really wants you guys make second episode !!!(sorry for my poor English...)
We need this
Your English is great! I also would love a second episode.
Yeah!!!!!
HeyIt'sKate thx u r so sweet 😢❤️
Perlman is the first classical musician that I knew and loved directly because of his music, not his movie or interview or anything else. My first Perlman's recording is his Tchaikovsky, of course, I was doing my research for Brett's 2M drop. So thank you guys made this happen, love you as always!!
The passion with which y'all make your videos is so inspiring to me! Thank you so much for being yourselves. Much love to you!
this is one of my fav twoset videos of all time
