  • Yeah I said it. In this video I breakdown the anime and manga and explain why I personally think the hype for this series is wildly overblown.
    I am sorry for how horrible this video looks. It was a nightmare uploading this at all.

      @@kinoo4496 the series was doing just fine before anime, some people just like to compare pre-anime and post-anime manga sales just to put down a series and say it blew up cus the anime had great animation?....Funny bc it's not like Naruto doesn't have great animation(in a lot of fight scenes the animation is just stellar) but is inconsistent the same goes for a bunch of other series it's just that with DS the quality is more consistent. What people fail to recognise is that any anime production of the manga series boosts the manga sales regardless of production quality most of the times, at least to some degree. Now people might say the boost is so much higher in DS bc of the quality of the production but I really don't think that's the case, we'll see in the future, other battle shounen or I might even say WSJ titles like JJK and CSM are now getting the same treatment in terms of their anime production, let's wait and see if the boosts really get them to 150 million copies in circulation lol. The funny thing is that people just like to point it out about DS cus it's 150 million copies in circulation. One thing worth noting is that as western audiences or just outside of Japan, most of the times we are introduced to a series not as manga but anime, ofc now with most manga being on. the internet and most people actively using it, it may not be the case

    Okay, read a bit of the manga and watched a bit of Season 2 here....I found Tanjiro and his inner monologue during every fight to be exhaustingly annoying. Sure, it highlights the desperation and the struggle as he is practically a rookie along with the 2 stooges. But, to have him go: "I am not good enough!" I like demon slayer but it has its problems
    Muzan's primary attack is no different from daki's if you think about it.(Sharp tentacle like things slashing stuff)
    Idk why people like nezuko so much,she is just ok.Almost all the time she is nothing but a plot device,whenever Tanjiro is in trouble she wakes up and saves him.
    No rules regarding the breathing techniques being established.I am not sure what is and is not possible with certain forms.For example:can giyu just spam his 11th form all the time.If not why so?is it a stamina problem?I doubt it is as we saw tanjiro spamming all the sun breathing forms while heavily weakened.
    Nezuko not being controlled by muzan never being explained.Why didn't muzan ever wonder about this one demon being able to break free.Shouldn't he be capturing her instead of killing her in order to look into it?They did give a reason for tamayo's escape from muzan control but not for nezuko.
    Nakime is pretty OP.I mean she could open a door under every hashira and put them through a near infinite fall.And nothign about the infinity castle was ever mentioned. Like is it located somewhere or is it some sort of separate dimension.And it could even seemingly transport people in and out of nowhere.
    Tanjiro's inner monologue is just so repeatitive.
    Muzan using black blood demon art once and then forgetting it was a thing.

    • @93Litze
      @93Litze 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sold per volume isn't really in indicator for beeing good. Its just an indicator for beeing liked or popular.
      The only thing Demon Slayer does better than One Piece or SnK is the animation. And this isn't even really true for the most time. One Piece has nowadays good animation scence aswell and SnK has his lack in using CGI, some of the animated fights are the best i have ever seen. Demon Slayer has his uniqueness in Animation... thats all. Not even the Character are likeable, but generic with 0 intention to make them likeable because of multiple traits.
      One Piece has the single best Worldbuilding in Anime. And this is not just an Opinion because i like One Piece its simply a fact. But One Piece has over 1000 episodes to do such great. But many episodes doesn't mean the worldbuilding is great. DragonBall or Naruto has a very poorly worldbuilding.
      And what does Worldbuilding mean? Not a big world, but that the world is alife. You could pick any character in One Piece and you would see there Story and it would be great. Everyone has his own Dreams in One Piece. Without Naruto or Goku the world does nothing.
      Attack on Titan has a great worldbuilding, too. But the 2 main sides are Paradise and Marley and you know close to nothing about the Rest.
      But Shingeki no kyojin has one of the greates Plots in Anime and the amount of foreshadowing is enormous and the Character are believable. The amount of times i got shocked in this Anime with reveals is high. And if you rewatch the Anime multiple times like i did. I watched season 1, with the start i watched season 1 again and saw details along that season that lead to the end of season 1. Than i watched season 2, and with the start of season 3 i watched 1 and 2 again and same with season 4 again. The amount of times i was thinking, wait... you could have known all of this before the reveal is just great and nothing comes out of nowhere, it feals very realistic to believe that the events happen there, like they do.
      One Piece, SnK and My Hero Academia shows us how to make every character likeable, even the Villians. There is no Villian who is just simply evil. Stain is one of my favourite Anime Villians. He is killing Heroes who just want to play Heroes or are hate driven, like Tenya. He is crippling Heroes which are lacking a good reason to become Hero(Tenyas brother) and he supports Heros, who are there to help other at all cost and don't run away. At the same, even as a Villian he hates other Villians that don't have a Motive. He is only for a few episodes in the Story and still one of the ebst villians.
      Now Demon Slayer has nothing of all that mentioned, what about the Animation? Even in the Animation there is an Anime that does it better most of the times and this is Jujutsu Kaisen. And what does Jujutsu Kaisen also have? A great cast of Charakter, a good story and really awesome fightscenes.
      t:dr;
      One Piece has the single best Wordbuilding.
      Snk one of the greates Storys and Plots.
      Boku no Hero Academia one of the best main cast and main villians.
      Demon Slayer has neat(unique) Animation.
      Jujutsu Kaisen has much better Animation and Story than Demon Slayer.
      I watched over 100 Animes and Demon Slayer is maybe at the edge of my TOP 50, while the other mentioned are all within my Top 10.

    I'll be honest: I'm not interested in DSY. To me, it's just another typical shonen anime made only popular because newcomer anime fans (though not limited to them) think it's the greatest due to the animation and other factors. I can give it for the animation, but I feel there are others better and more interesting than this in my opinion. The characters don't look compelling to me.
    If anyone likes DSY, fine, but they got to understand that there are other animes or series better than DSY (or any other popular shonen series) and DSY isn't the greatest anime of all. And don't get mad at people criticizing it and not liking it.

    Nezuko is the main female character and yet she mostly doesn't speak and just comes to save the day sometimes. Pokemon from the anime are more than that and have their own episodes and yet a girl who was once human didn't.

Upon me expanding my taste onto other shows outside of just shounen (or any other genre), it had made me relized how fundamentally flawed this story from a basic writing standpoint and it blows my mind how a mediocre story could become a million dollar IP just because of its visuals alone. Nothing about what it does for the writing or the characters, or even the plot itself. It ultimately speaks to what the vast majority values in media and Demon Slayer is just one of those shows that proves just because a thing is popular that doesn't necessarily mean its good. It's true that it took me a while to get used to Monster's art style. The only ones I liked were Tenma, Anna, Johann, Runge, and Dieter. The series is 70+ episodes, but the characters were all fleshed out nicely and none of the main cast were left behind in terms of characterization. The main story and side stories were heartfelt too!

      @@sirsurgenor Yea I had a whole debate with some friends about demon slayer being overrated, I still like it but i try very hard to enjoy it like they do and I just can’t because the characters, plot and power scaling doesn’t work.
      Zenitsu still has no character, Insouke has changed and is nicer now bc of tanjiro and hes my favorite of the trio but they allude to his life in the mountains but don’t show it for some reason.
      Tanjiro is a very basic main character with traits that are fine but nothing unique about him he’s basically the chosen one. His family is whats to make me feel for him yet they had 2 minutes of screen time, I know nothing about them and as such I dont care. Nezuko is ok shes kind of a plot convenience but their relationship as brother and sister is nice.
      When they do training arcs they need to be more intentional on what their capabilities are and what their limits are so it stays grounded. Tanjiro gets battered, cut etc and somehow he keeps getting power ups out of no where which zones me out.
      Now somehow apparently he got his slayer mark when the dude literally said 2 seconds ago he couldn’t swing or hold his sword. If he didn’t have 3 power ups within one long fight this wouldn’t be a problem bc every mc has a power up moment. But it happens so much that I feel nothing.

    I would assume that the reason Nezuko wasn’t featured in the final battle was because Muzan’s cells would just rip her apart from the inside (as he is her progenitor). He hadn’t done this before then because she wasn’t a threat and because she was his key to conquering the sun. That would all change if she proved to be a valuable asset against him in the fight.
    Also, Tanjiro moves beyond the opening thread in the ‘Swordsmith Village arc” when training against Yoriichi Zeroshiki. He learns to use his smell to predict attacks before they happen, and it is stated that this is faster than the opening thread. Hence why the opening thread is never mentioned again.

    I finally got around to watching Demon Slayer and I have just finished the Mugen Train movie/arc and I'm now getting ready to watch season 2 but overall I agree with what you said in this video. I will give Demon Slayer the same things you did, it does have awesome character designs, a good soundtrack, and some top notch animation (minus some CGI parts, I think they can go a bit overboard with it at times) but the writing is definitely mediocre at best to lackluster at worst. It's not the worst but it's definitely not great neither and I agree that it's annoying when people prop this anime up as the"best anime of all time".
    In my experience the only people I see who say this tend to be much younger than me. For context I am currently in my early 30s and have been watching anime since I was 11 so as you can imagine I have been exposed to quite a lot of anime in my time, not as much as some diehard anime fans but I have more than enough under my belt to notice when something that captivates and pulls me in versus something that doesn't. Demon Slayer definitely pulled me in with the strong art style it has going for it but upon watching, I've just been left feeling indifferent towards it.
    I won't lie, I'm not all that into shounen anime these days because for the most part they all play out the same and I have a past of already watching the classics like Dragon Ball Z, Yu Yu Hakusho, Trigun, Rurouni Kenshin, Inuyasha, Slayers, One Piece, Naruto, Fullmetal Alchemist, Bleach, Black Butler, and Death Note and some lesser popular ones like Zatch Bell, Rave Master, and MAR and when i got into my mid 20s, I was just so exhausted by the genre and all the usual cliches that they tend to have. And at that point it was why I couldn't bother getting into other shounen anime that I hadn't seen like Fairy Tail, Black Clover, and Seven Deadly Sins because they just felt like the same rehashed characters and stories that I had seen already a ton of times and I just didn't have the patience to get through them.
    With Demon Slayer, aside from the beautiful art style that intrigued my interest, I picked it up this year because I hadn't watched any newer shounen annime (that I haven't already seen) in quite awhile and I was thinking that maybe it would be different since everyone I came across was raving about it. So I watch season 1 and I notice that I felt unsatisfied because of how the characters were written. Tanjiro on the surface was a nice change of pace from the usual loud-mouthed, cocky, "I'm obsessed with fighting & food" type protagonists that we get in the genre but unfortunately that's where it ends because once you actually watch, Tanjiro is a boring character with no real interests or compelling depth. He has pseudo depth at best. Yeah we get he's really empathetic and that's good to a degree but like what more can you say about him? What are his hobbies? What are his interests? These questions don't get answers and it's what makes him so bland and one-dimensional and I suppose that's fine for the genre but it's not gonna really be all that interesting to an anime watcher who's already watched a ton of shounen for years to even decades. And the other characters don't fair any better and play their stereotype too straight like annoying Zenitsu and Inosuke.
    And yeah the ass pulls that the show has is unimaginably cheap. At this time I haven't gotten through season 2 yet but the Rui fight already showed what kinda crap this anime will go on to do.
    Anyway this comment is long enough lol. To me Demon Slayer is just all style but not much substance. It's not the worst but it's not the best. I feel that at most it is a good beginner anime and for a seasoned anime watcher if you can shut your brain off and try to just ride with it and not get too frustrated with the lackluster writing, it is okay but nothing more. I'm gonna finish it just to say I did but I totally can see why the more seasoned anime fans were not impressed by it once they got passed the beautiful art and animation and I feel the same way.

    I understand why some people might say this anime shouldn't be considered one of the best animes out there... But I think to say it's overrated is really unfair, especially if you know some details from the manga.
    What makes this anime special, besides the animation, is the fact that like Tanjiro, you didn't know anything about this world. Any information you had is very little. So this show appeals to your sense of curiosity in order to get you hooked in. Another thing that makes it special is that this show seems to handle the "Anyone can make destiny." better than other shows. Because in this case it's true. What he does, many others can do as well. Better even. And his son technique ? Anyone can learn it as well, as long as they have access to the knowledge. Yorichi could have met any other family, and Muzan would have hunted them down instead of the Kamados.
    And there is constant risk. Every time they use their techniques, the protagonists risk breaking their bodies beyond repair. It's not just the demons that threaten them. They are a danger to themselves as well. You never know when one of them might reach their physical limit. They have to make sure they don't reach it, not just because they have to keep up with the demons, but because they are their own worst enemies as well
    All and all, while I think this show could have been better had it focused more on its horror elements, it's still pretty enjoyable and you can take something out of it. You just have to keep an open mind.
    Though I do agree they should do more things with Nezuko. Girl is very cute and helpful, yet the creators don't seem to understand she can be so much more. I think I even know how her character could have been more developed.

    Not even gonna watch the video. All Ima say is that Demon slayer is trying to be a simple story built off emotion and action. Which it accomplishes both. The ending was great showing a great message that recontextualizes the plot/deaths as a whole. It’s a simple story that is fleshed out well they could’ve done more of course but they didn’t want too n it’s her first manga so I’m fine it. Demon Slayer is good simple as that. I of course realize the anime is wayyy better then the manga n I think that’s fine.

    • @johnmiller4895
      @johnmiller4895 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      If its trying to be built off emotion it failed by making the main characters mission to turn his sister human. Yea its an emotionally heavy concept but because its the main characters only surviving family member you have a pretty good idea that she wont die. And thats even more hammered in by how the family is only on screen for 2 minutes 30 seconds MAX before they die. My point is, the emotional weight to the main characters journey is not there when all it takes some thinking to realize how bad the writing is.

Now I must admit FMAB and HxH and are really great, and FMAB especially is such a different type of shounen with some really great character writing(but not as good as AnJ imo) and HxH was always my fav even when anime like Naruto, Bleach and Fairy Tail were really popular. I wouldn’t call it generic. His character and the villains may be a bit one dimensional, but it adds value to the character due to the twist it puts as well. Main theme of this anime is to show how valuable life is, no matter how corrupted it may be which is to why it shows the backstory of those demons and humanizes them rather than coming, as stated before, a bit one dimension. I like this show, but wouldn’t call it the greatest anime. But in terms of new age/gen anime, it’s up there.
    Unpopular opinion: in terms of writing and story, I still think fire force is superior

    • @pascalsimioli6777
      @pascalsimioli6777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You don't humanize anyone by giving the same over dramatic backstory in the same points of the plot. Humanizing means to make human and these people do not make human decisions at all, so having a window of their sad sad artificially sad life written to tear jerk you isn't human... It doesn't work.

    I think you all fail to see how emotionally driven this show is. Tanjiro's goal is not to become the strongest fighter, defeat more powerful enemies than himself, become Hokage, a Hero or the king of pirates. His only purpose in life is to heal her sister and to achieve such a feat he has to overcome obstacles in the form of demons, thus he has to become stronger and fight, his and his sister's life depend on it. It is a Shonen, let's not kid ourselves, plot armor and Zenkai boosts out of their butts is a given. Don't pretend your power fantasy filled gokus/narutos/dekus don't have troupes such as those. Animation sure is a great asset but Demon Slayer is not carried by it, it is carried by the deep human/emotional connection within their characters. Almost of backstories bring people to the brink of crying their eyes out, those scenes have the bare minimum of animation in them. No, it is not perfect, no masterpiece either, it has pacing flaws and the ending wasn't the greatest either. Most of the complaints seem to come from a place of jealousy rather than constructive criticism. Instead of thinking: ohh, this could be a stepping stone for studios to set the bar higher and adapt other works that I personally enjoy better than DS, fuck, let's make it happen; You decide to point out every single troupe from other past popular Shonen shows as if they didn't do the exact same thing.
    TL;DR: Shonen got troupes, don't pretend the one you enjoy don't have them. Animation doesn't carry DS; human/emotional interaction with protagonist and other characters is what made it so popular. Animation is the cherry on top.

    • @sirsurgenor
      @sirsurgenor  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Not sure what you mean by jealousy to be perfectly honest. And I never said the shonen tropes were exclusive to demon slayer. Those very tropes are partly why I have never watched Dragon Ball, MHA, or Naruto. Most of the connections between characters, besides maybe Tanjro and Nezuko just don't feel complete. They feel half baked and rushed. Also. demon slayer suffers from an extremely formulaic and repetitive pace in how it's story beats are laid out.
      It's perfectly fine if you disagree with me, and again, I actually really like Demon Slayer, just wanted to vent about the things that bug me about it.

      Lol. How would i care about characters that are poorly developed? Everyone says Mugen Train is good and cried out at a death scene for character that was barley in it. I don’t understand the jealousy part considering he provided actual criticism. It seems like you’re a kid that can’t handle an opinion. Firstly Naruto is written better than DS. It might be shonen but still. But let’s not compare just the typical shows. Let’s compare Demon Slayer to Attacked on titan, Vinland Saga, Steingate, FMA Brotherhood, Code Geass. DS falls flat

    • @pascalsimioli6777
      @pascalsimioli6777 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tanjiro's goal is to save his sister, yes. Why? Cause they love each other, obviously. Why? Cause they shared a lot together. Such as? Name your favorite moment of Tanjiro and Nezuko before she becomes a demon. Nothing? So maybe the fact he wants to save his sister is kinda emotionally empty considering his sister is nothing more than a mcguffin? It's pretty funny you criticize other anime protagonists for wanting to be the best in something yet Tanjiro's motivation is way emptier than theirs.
