  • Learn to Create Patterns in Illustrator to Use for Spoonflower and how to Export Swatches.
    Learn how to design patterns in Illustrator using the Pattern Make tool which lets you preview patterns and work on them in a live editing environment. Once this is done you will learn how to extract a pattern swatch from the Swatches palette and how to crop it to size to use in Spoonflower - all this is done in Illustrator and without having to use other software such as Photoshop. See how to save out the pattern swatch as an image file suitable for use in Spoonflower. See how to set it up in Spoonflower ready for purchase.
    This video shows a smart and effective workflow from Illustrator to Spoonflower.

    Learn a simple workflow for making patterns in #Illustrator and for exporting them from Illustrator prepped and ready to upload to Spoonflower to be custom printed as fabric.
    If you don't know Spoonflower they print fabric for you - no setup cost and with minimums as small as an 8x8" swatch $5, through fat quarters to yardage. They also do wallpaper and gift wrap. Creating and printing your own patterns is fun but you need to prepare them right and this video shows how.

    Hi Helen .... I am able to add background color to a pattern the way you explained to Stephanie H below, then drag the swatch back into the swatches panel and use it, however, if I try to edit it further with the Ai CC pattern maker I am unable to select and adjust individual elements in the pattern. Is there something I am missing that would enable me to have a background and continue editing the pattern? Many thanks!!! Your tutorials are really fantastic!!!!

    Hey there! Great tutorial, but I'm a little stumped. I've made my repeat pattern and it's in the swatches menu, but when I drag the swatch over to view the repeat, I don't see the two blue boxes shown around your circles. Any suggestions on that?
    Thanks!! :)

      Danielle Dorton Make sure you have Show Edges turned on - you do this from the View menu. Check this and let me know if you still have problems.

      Helen Bradley Thank you for your quick reply. :) Unfortunately I had my "show edges" turned on. The only thing I did different from you was the first segment, where you showed really quickly how to make a repeating pattern. I make my repeats using a box and the transform "math" way. I don't know if that makes sense?
      Thanks so much!

    • @HelenBradley
      @HelenBradley  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Danielle Dorton Ok, it might make a difference but you should still be able to follow the tutorial. Once you've made your pattern, drag the swatch into the document and go ahead and save it. It will either work or not when you get to spoonflower and upload it. If it works - great, if it doesn't - let me know and we can look at it further. You don't have to buy what you upload to spoonflower so you can easily test the result without having to pay for anything.

    Hi Helen! I love your videos and I thought finding this one was a Godsend! But I'm having a problem. When I try to export it, instead of exporting what's inside the artboard it exports the entire swatch! I don't understand this. When I "Save for Web" it works fine but 72dpi is not what I need (I need at least 150dpi!). Do you know what's happening here and how to fix it? I can't find any info on this. I hope you can help, thank you!

    • @HelenBradley
      @HelenBradley  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In the Save for Web dialog there is a checkbox titled Clip to Artboard - if you check that then anything outside the Artboard won't be included in the export. Secondly, the Save for Web option ALWAYS saves at 72dpi and you cannot change that - you would have to change the resolution using another program like Photoshop.
      If you watch this video of mine: th-cam.com/video/XT89O7ca1P0/w-d-xo.html
      You will learn what is happening here, why you can't fix it, and some options to use instead. Hope this helps - it is a really difficult and confusing topic.

Can you send me one file to look at and tell me what version of Illustrator your are using. Also tell me if you have access to Photoshop and what output you need - I assume it is the actual swatch as a high res jpeg or tiff but let me know. I'll check it out for you. Send it to helen@helenbradley.com and I'll take a look at it.

    • @HelenBradley
      @HelenBradley  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If anyone is experiencing a similar problem the first thing to do is to see if the lines move around if you resize the pattern. If they do - they are Illustrator fracture lines which require one solution. If they don't - they are problems in the pattern itself. In this case Lori had a problem in the pattern itself, and thankfully we were able to solve it. The issue was that there was a bleed set for the document which caused a one pixel line around the pattern swatch. This setting can be found in File > Document Setup and should be set to zero.

    I've figured out how to make repeat patterns, but I'm still confused about color and printing since I don't have any experience in print design. Why did you use the RGB mode? I thought the standard one is CMYK since the patterns on Spponflower are meant to be printed on fabric, wallpaper etc? And can I use gradient and transparency?

      Hello Brenda. In the video and at 5:25 I mention that you can use either method - just choose one that you will learn - they both work and they both produce essentially the same result. So, use one or the other and follow the video instructions carefully - that is important. Good luck.

      Thanks Stephanie. You can include a background color in the swatch if you drag the swatch out of the Swatches panel, make a duplicate of the no fill no stroke rectangle which is found at the very bottom of the swatch objects, and fill it with color. Just make sure that the no fill no stroke rectangle remains the bottom most object.

    Hi Helen!!! Happy Day!!! Great video!! I uploaded a dot pattern to Spoonflower... Wohoo!!! I just started learning both Ai and Ps for patten making and your videos are really amazing. Thank you so much fo all of them. I specially like watching them in Skillshare. I wanted to ask you if you have a video anywhere of loading patterns created in Adobe Capture to Spoonflower or any other POD company. This discussion is active in a lot of pattern making facebook groups and nobody seems to have the right answer or the correct way of doing it. I don't have a problem loading the pattern into a smart objects for mockups, the issue is finding the initial tile of the repeat. I have all my patterns in the libraries and when is time to select a tile both in Ai or Ps it gets really tricky. It never works. There's a written tutorial that I followed, but I didn't get the results I expected. I can share with you a link incase you are curios. I wasn't sure if is okay to post it here. • @HelenBradley
      @HelenBradley  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There will be - at the very least - one no fill no stroke rectangle in the objects you dragged onto the artboard. It will be the bottom most of the objects. If you look in the layers palette you will find it. It has to be there as it is the bounding box for the pattern swatch and all pattern swatches must have them. In some cases it extends all around the objects and in others it is situated inside the area covered by them but always it is the last object in the objects you drag out of the swatches panel.

    Hi there
    Do you know or have a video for...I am creating a decorative pattern swatch (like a dot) and then loading my rectangle with the swatch I created.
    I am then placing a design of flowers I created on top of that just as you would any design for a repeat,but it will not allow me to take the entire finished piece back to the swatches panel so that I can then use it as a finished piece with a dotted background .
    The stall seems to be when I try to select the finished piece (background) no stroke/no fill so I can drag it into swatches.Just will not do it.
    Ideas?

    • @HelenBradley
      @HelenBradley  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lori Abraham Lori, you can't have a pattern in a pattern. When you fill the rectangle with the dots you need to expand the rectangle so the pattern is no longer a pattern fill. Then you can add the flowers on top. It should work just fine. Let me know if you still have problems.

But in the meantime art optimized adds anti-aliasing to the shapes and text. If you choose None there is no anti-aliasing and the designs look pretty awful. So, in fact, you should choose art optimized when exporting your patterns. I need to check this video and see what I did - it was probably that I overlooked that setting. Now I have art optimized selected automatically so I never have to make that decision/choice. Thanks for pointing this out and look out for the video soon.

    My line drawing created in illustrator as a vector is coming out quite pixelated (when I test print it on paper..as a jpg) - even when I downsize it and make it smaller will this happen in spoonflower as well... the lines are only 1 pt wide do they need to be wider..

    • @HelenBradley
      @HelenBradley  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Taking something to Spoonflower probably won't change the result as Spoonflower is just printing on fabric instead of printing on paper. One point lines are very small. If you scale something to 100% a one point line is the thickness of 1/72 of an inch. You might consider thickening up your lines a little bit but that's only going to work if it gives you the look that you're going for. One other thing to consider is how large your JPEG file is. Can you see what it's dimensions are in pixels! That may give you an answer as to why you are seeing the pixelization. Typically to print at, say, 6" x 6" you will need a file that is 6×150 or 6×300 pixels in dimension to give you a good quality printout at 150 PPI or 300 ppi. So the actual physical size of your JPEG is going to impact the quality of the print that you get. I know this stuff is pretty confusing so if I can be of more help please feel free to ask the question.

    If I want my pattern to repeat at 8 inches. Do I use an artboard that is 8x8 or change the dpi when exporting?

    • @HelenBradley
      @HelenBradley  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      To repeat at 8 inches at Spoonflower, for example you need to save an image that it 2400 x 2400 if you want 300 dpi printing or 1200 x 1200 for 150 dpi printing. I have a video which might help you understand this: th-cam.com/video/XT89O7ca1P0/w-d-xo.html

      Adriana this is just fine. If your pattern is a rectangle there is no issue. It doesn't have to be square.

    • @HelenBradley
      @HelenBradley  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can sample colors for gradients using the eyedropper tool. If it doesn't work by itself hold the shift key as you use the eyedropper tool. That particular key combination is handy for sampling colors from a gradient filled shape.

    I was excited to find this, and I've been following along--trying to copy what you're doing--but keep running into a problem. I paste my graphic onto the artboard, select it, and then choose Object / Pattern / Make. When I do that, though, my graphic is no longer centered on the art board (like yours seems to automatically be) even if I carefully place the graphic right in the center of the art board before I make the pattern. In other words, after I make the pattern, my original graphic shifts away from the center of the art board, and I don't see how to move it so that it is once again centered. This makes it hard to align the copied design in the corners, using the "transform" tool, like you do. Do you know why this might be happening or how to correct it? I'm using Illustrator CC.

    • @HelenBradley
      @HelenBradley  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mary, when you select your object and choose Object > Pattern > Make - I find it sometimes moves and sometimes doesn't. If I start with it in the center it seems not to move. However, whether it moves or not you can always select the element and use the Align tools to align it to the center of the artboard. Just make sure the Align tool is set to Align to Artboard. I hope this helps? Let me know if I misunderstood the question or if you have other questions.

    Hi Helen, thank you for this extremely helpful video, I've had to refer to it many times over the last year or so (when I forget the process). Can you explain how to properly carry out this process with a full color background? My pattern elements always come out great, but I'm still getting a seam with a background color. Thanks!

    • @HelenBradley
      @HelenBradley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rachel there are all sorts of causes and solutions here. Your best option will be to make sure your swatch size is whole numbers - so width and height are both whole numbers. That will let you ensure that your background rectangle is a whole number in terms of pixels wide and tall. Also make sure its position on the artboard is at a whole number (ie x and y) and it will help to ensure that the position of your artboard is also at whole numbers for its x and y.
      I also find I get better results using the Save for Web (Legacy) option that the Export As feature. Any one or multiple of these situations can cause the issue or maybe there are other causes. Seriously, Illustrator totally sucks at this process. It's just fraught with difficulties. That said, hopefully one or more of these solutions might help?
      One final thought is to export minus the background colour as a png image and then open the file and add it using Photoshop. It's a PITA but if it works then that's possibly something to consider (I certainly would if it were me).

      Pegeen Shean Thank you Pegeen. I actually watched a video to see how to do this on TH-cam and thought woah! that is not the way it should be done, there has to be an easier and smarter way. +yvie212 Hello there - I am sorry that you do not have this tool in CS5 - This tool was new in Illustrator CS6 so you won't have it. You will need to make your patterns the old way. I don't have a video on doing this but I have found a good one for you. This is by a woman called sewheidi. She is pretty well known and she it pretty clear in her instructions. Find her video here: sewheidi.com/videos/repeating-patterns-in-illustrator-manually-cs5-earlier/
      Once you have made your pattern you can return to my video to see how to prepare the swatch for Spoonflower.
