    2004 Western Conference First Round Game 1, April 17, 2004 | A fun yet very bizarre contest between the Lakers and Rockets to open up the 2004 playoffs. Shaq had a strong first half with 16 points and Kobe ended his half with just 5 points on one shot while collecting 5 assists. In the second half, both players came with a totally different approach. Kobe, after a 1-1 shooting first half, turned his attention towards scoring, and it wasn't very successful. KB would go a dismal 3-18 from the floor in the second half to finish with a final stat line of 16 points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists, and 5 steals. On the other hand, Shaquille had an extremely quiet 2nd half, putting just 4 points on the board. However, two of those points were far from quiet. With the Lakers down 1 and the clock running down, Kobe was forced into a tough, fading perimeter jumper by the defense of Cuttino Mobley. The shot would draw air, but luckily for the Lakers, big Shaq would be right under the rim for a rebound and dunk over Yao Ming while getting fouled. Shaq missed the free throw, but great Laker defense on the other end sealed a 72-71 victory for the home team. Shaq finished with 20 points and 17 boards.

      @@joshuahaynes7128Kobe was the best player and top scorer for the series you mentioned. So you gotta feed Shaq but also give the keys to Kobe especially organising and on the clutch.

    Defence is no longer played like this
    Every team just trying to out score the other
    The “good” defensive teams are just the ones that try a little bit.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but with the additions of Malone and Payton who in my opinion still had fuel in the tank, this team should have won the title. Must not have been the right cemistry. Malone was hitting on Kobe's wife, got injured and Payton didn't want to play the triangle.

    • @EYECONN
      @EYECONN 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      One thing that people hardly ever bring up these days is the injury to Malone in the finals. While Gary Payton never fit the chemistry of the team, Malone was actually a picture perfect fit. Malone's presence along with Shaq and Kobe's dominance masked the Lakers thinned out bench at the end of their run, when Malone went down, the Pistons had an easier time in walling off Shaq, and running a variation of the box and 1 on Kobe, and they didn't have the role players around them as an extension. Adding onto that of course was the growing riff between Kobe and Shaq, but I felt everything began to spiral out of control once Karl went down.

    Mitch Kupchak was no Jerry West. Regardless of Shaq and Kobe beefing, their stats were usually there. Starting in 2003 then in 2004, the rest of the team wasn’t there. 2004 was an improvement from 2003 but the role players needed to be better

      MJ ? Lol the guy that beat weak teams while being super stacked defensively lol pippen took the bulls to the ECF for goodness sake lol Rodman pippen Harper Grant kukoc vs Stockton Malone and role players lol Knicks with Ewing and an undersized starks lol MJ beat weaker competition that's why he seemed invincible the competition was weak . Also the 2000s was the lowest scoring era in history because teams played at a lower pace and they added zone defense . Much easier for MJ to score than for Kobe . Kobe is better to me but people just love to mythify mj because he came first.

      @@diegochavez6203 Jezz what a dumb comment. Pippen took the Bulls to what? Lol. The Bulls got past an injury riddled Cavs in the first round just to lose in the ECSF to the Knicks. Grant was in the 1st 3peat Bulls, not the second one. Rodman was 35 years old in his first finals for the Bulls and wasn't even a starter in their last ring. The Jazz in 1997 and 1998 won 60+ games and were actually the best team in the league in 1998. That team with 'Malone,Stockton and role players' beat 61 win Lakers with prime Shaq,Eddie Jones and Van Exel and beat the Spurs 4-1,that went on to win the ring in the following season. Whoever says he faced weak competition wasn't alive then,didn't watch anything and shouldn't chime in with their idiotic takes. The pace in the late 90s was just as low as in the 2000s and that didn't stop Jordan from leading the league in scoring and averaging 30+ppg in the playoffs. In 1998 teams averaged 91ppg in the playoffs and Jordan averaged over 32ppg in that playoff run and 33ppg in the finals(Bulls averaged 88ppg in the finals by the way). And of course you're gonna bring up zone lol. Lakers won 2 rings before zone was even a thing and Kobe averaged more after zone than before, but zone is supposed to be this crazy 'stopper'. Jordan played against the real zone(without 3sec defensive rule) in college. Not to mention a 39 year old Jordan with knee problems was averaging over 25ppg before his knee injury for the Wizards,right after illegal defense was banned.
