This comment... reminds me of sentenced... they were my fave metal band dating back to 2001 in my life... then i became familiar with touhou metal in 2009 :D BTW you can find some real sentenced tributes in some touhou metal songs here and there.
I guess you just liked the powermetal aspects more. This is a lot more inspired by progmetal/djent which is a lot less symphonic and uptempo like powermetal. However this more my kinda shit, it has more angular grooves, the older stuff was just straight double kick madness all throughout (which I like too) and the production on here is the best so far (apart from some breakdowns that sound copy-pasted like in bad apple, some notes aren't even played which is kinda sucky but eh). They make up for the lack of symphonic influences with the groovy ones if that makes sense.
yeah, they lost a lot of their melody complexity, the whole album is kinda generic metal with easy, straight-forward melodies - that‘s why this is my least favorite album. Their newest album (determinism&destrukction) is extremely sick though 😁👍 and it’s also djent but very complex with a lot tempo and melody changes - if you listen to it, you don‘t know what is coming next but everything still fits together extremely well
