Typically feeder roads aren't two way, they go same direction as their adjacent freeway traffic and you will have pretty common cross overs or unders at large intersections

The new area has some office buildings inside one of the roundabouts. Is that on purpose? I'd assume it wouldn't be good for traffic.

  • @PatentDude

Biffa, I love the fact you are playing with frontage roads. Texas is famous for using them. I've noticed that Texas often makes them one way on each side (in the same direction of the interstate) with periodic crossover bridges, effectively making them roundabouts that are linked like big chains. Not sure how that'd work in Cities: Skylines, but you may want to try that if the traffic gets frustrating.

    • @benoitrochon589

This! Same way here in Montreal. We call them service roads here, and they are one way, same direction that the highway is going. Then overpass to help cross over once in awhile.

This and also from a fellow Texan, most of the crossover bridges, at least where I live, have a dedicated turnaround lane on the left and often have a slip lane for turning right.

This one around E1 and E2 in Metro Manila, also called Service Road respectively in parallel to the expressway for easier access to residential, commercial, industrial properties. Right now, the West Service Road in Alabang, Muntinlupa City got into one-way in order to give way for the Metro Manila Skyway Extension Construction.

@Maiden Minnesota I'm in WA. State up near the border with Canada and we are just short of a shelter in place order.
Crazy part is with a lot of people not working nor anyone school the parks are full of people enjoying the Sun. Old people walking in groups not even attempting to maintain social distancing... Kids playing on the playground equipment. Still a lot of people out and about even if the roads are a little quieter.
I have live animals at work so I am required to work and with the lack of staffing my work load is about 4 times the amount of work.

But when I thought about it a little longer I figured that Your videos, especially the city fixes, are my sort of "satisfactory videos". • @tbmike23

Stay safe and healthy, Biffa, wishing everybody the best! In my experience, busy frontage roads are 1 way, and essentially secondary highways. They're like a merge buffer, between slow city traffic and through ways, either raised over a trenched highway, or at the foot of a raised highway, crossing under. In texas, they usually have this good layout, crossing every mile, on-ramp ads a lane, off-ramp removes it a mile later, and before each crossing intersection there's a turnaround so a lot of traffic doesn't have to sit at the light. Straight traffic has the light, turning traffic has their own yielding lanes. I love it, it's so convenient. Each intersection essentially has two halves of a roundabout tucked under one bridge. Look up texas u-turn. Very efficient. Also: your main roads dead end at the frontage road, they should go through. That's where the crossing should be, off ramp, crossing intersection, on ramp.

You have a few Texans that watch you! We are the masters of "frontage road highways" in the States. If traffic thickens up, switch them to one-way and put turnarounds in. In heavy traffic areas (Houston), we even have 3 lane one-way frontage roads with dedicated on-ramp/off-ramp lanes. That way, you have 1 through lane, one merge lane, and one turn-into-the-store lane.

I'm slap bang in the middle of the UK and work in a small brewery, unfortunately we've had to cease all production this week (although our taproom stayed open until the announcement today). All schools have also closed in my area, so things are really coming to a head. Myself and our small team are now effectively out of jobs for the foreseeable future as well.
I'm rambling now, but stay safe everyone and look after your loved ones.
Oh.. and if you live in the UK make sure you get out and support your local pubs and breweries as soon as your allowed to do so again! We will need everyone's help to recover from the aftermath and it could be the final straw for an already struggling industry.

    Hey biffa!
As someone who lives somewhere where frontage roads are everywhere, this isn't how frontage roads work.
Frontage roads only allow entering the highway from the same direction that the highway is going. Usually this means the frontage road is one way in the same direction as the highway.
Additionally, usually crossovers are main roads and are in between the off and on ramps. So you can get off, cross over and get back on in the event you need to Uturn when on the highway.
How you have it currently requires people to come to a full stop and do an almost U turn to get onto the highway, negatively impacting traffic. Additionally, to cross over, people need to go out of their way, as opposed to being able to cross over ON the main road, and between off/on ramps.

All the frontage roads I've come across in America are one-way roads that are normally 3 lanes or more in the one direction, and then 3 in the other direction on the other side of the freeway. The roads open up to 4 or 5 lanes at a stop light with the new leftmost lanes turning into onramps for the freeway. Then shortly after that the 2 lane offramp merges in followed by an intersection with the leftmost lanes become left turn lanes with plenty of merge space and signs saying "this lane left turn onto X street only" etc in real life there would be a node two worth of space for the cars to merge onto the frontage road before the stoplight hits and they'd be forced to make a left. Then the whole thing repeats over and over again every quarter mile to half mile depending on the offramp and onramp count. Also the whole highway tends to be sunken and the frontage roads being at ground level. A good example of this is highway CA-198 through the city of Visalia, California, USA. The city has a population of about 140,000 people with a metro population around 400,000 and the 2-lane each direction with frontage roads highway is more than adequate to handle the traffic through the city and it's downtown district.

    @alexandervilla5673 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Howdy, Biffa! Texan here, where frontage/feeder roads are everywhere! Your roads look great! However, you don't want two way traffic on the feeder roads because (in real life) it introduces too many places for accidents to happen. The feeder roads should be one way traffic only with the traffic going the same direction as the highway. There are a few pre-made "Texas U-turn" mods in the shop if you want to check those out and get the full Texas road experience! I use them in my cities. They work pretty well if they're made right.

for those cases of sinking a road/building a bridge i like using the move-it tool to make the incline really smooth.
You can find it, when you click the arrow next to the bulldozer and select "align slope", i think thats the name.
Basicly mark the nodes you wanna move up/down, then click on the "Align slope" tool and then simply left-click both the highest and lowest points (that you want the slope to be inbetween of)
Really makes those roads look smooth, and i just never get it right my manually moving nodes up and down

In the US we call them "service roads", as typically they are used keeping the service trucks (mail, delivery, etc) off the main highway in the local area. I've found they work decent in the game but you need slightly faster speeds on the highway and slightly slower speeds on the service/frontage road. Also helps to keep zoning off of them or else traffic goes crazy. I like using the 2 lane 2 way highway (no zoning), but slow down the speeds, or run paths right next to the road to remove the zoning. It also helps to have more "exits" than usual so you do not end up with the few short exits getting clogged, instead they have 4+ exits to use, not 1 or 2.

I know they’ve all said it, but you need a double u turn and one way service roads for access roads to really work. Works amazing in Texas, both rural and urban highways. When a road crosses the highway, you still have the double u turn, but the cross street also under passes. Halfway between the cross streets, you do an off ramp then on ramp in the same lane on the access road (the lane starts and ends on the highway). This takes away the need for a cross street to have a ramp to the highway. The u turns under the highway don’t need a traffic signal, and just yield to the access road where there is a conflict.

  • @Jmac1962

Totally love seeing you experiment with frontage roads, Biffa. We have them all over here in Texas. However, most frontage roads in urban areas are typically one-way, same direction as the highway side they front. If folks have to go the opposite direction they cross the highway to the other frontage road. just food for thought. :)

Hey biffa! Just some frontage road tips. Usually in that heavy of an area the frontage roads would run one way in the direction of the same side off the highway they are on. Also for the on off ramp there’s typically only one lane off with some real world lane mathematics. And finally the overpasses usually are put in between the on/off ramps. Of course that’s usually how they are used in a busy area. In less busy areas like a small town they can easily be two-way danger roads. If you want some good examples of frontage roads, google map(s) just about any highway in Texas and you have some examples real quick cause they’re in love with ‘em. Anyways good vid and stay safe :)

@Biffa Nice video. Only one thing I should mention. Not all frontage roads are 2-way roads each way. A prime example is the frontage roads in San Antonio, TX, USA. These roads are going the same direction as the freeway although at slower speeds. They have Turn-abouts every so often to let traffic go the other way without getting in the intersections. I would also add a least two (2) more crossovers over the freeway for both sides of the freeway.

Just a thought over here in the US ... Texas specifically, the frontage roads are one way roads. There is no cross over at the freeway exit and entrance. Also perpendicular (roads crossing the freeway) act as the turn around from one one way to the other

Another thing you could do for that new development area is to apply the local-express concept. (A second highway that cuts through the area without any interchanges for through traffic. This could be elevated like Tokyo's Urban Expressway network, underground in tunnels, or sprawling like the Wikipedia example if land allows.) I find local-express works a bit better than frontage roads. Sorta like stack interchange vs cloverleaf.
The Wikipedia illustration of local-express isn't great, so if I might explain it a bit with an example. Imagine this new district might have the highway running through the center, as it does, but then it has perhaps three service interchanges. That's the "local" part of the local-express. To add the express part, provide through-lanes that exit that local highway before the first service interchange, then pass over/under/beside the local highway and reconnect at the far end. Now the only traffic using the local bit of highway should be traffic that needs to use one of the three interchanges. All through traffic should choose the express lanes that bypass them. (Assisted by speed limits.) You can further shape traffic by being strategic about when you allow traffic to move from local to express or express to local, but a light hand is advised here.

Guess you're not Texan. Frontage Roads are usually better off one-way going in the same direction as the highway so there's no lane crossover. I built one Frontage Road system in my original tile (in two cities) to start the game with one-way frontage roads, and no traffic buildup!

I don't know about the UK, but in Canada, frontage roads are usually one-way roads going the same direction as the highway. I think that would help your traffic buildup taking the exit because of the angle of the ramp.
Oh, and here we call them service roads ;)

As a truck driver that routinely deals with frontage roads...
The only place you find 2 way frontage roads are low population, low use areas. In high density cities, frontage roads are almost exclusively 2 lane, one way affairs. This allows for an entrance/exit lane and a through lane.
I saw a comment about adding u-turn lanes over or under the highway, and this is also true. Usually, it's directly before reaching an intersection that joins frontage roads either over or under the highway.
2 way frontage roads IRL in high density areas are notoriously crowded and dangerous. I encourage you to try these ideas and see how they work.

In the states, at least in Texas, the frontage roads are one-way roads that travel alongside the interstate. They have occasional under/over-passes, which are usually in conjunction with main avenues through the city, acting as large overlapping roundabouts. In the larger cities, we're seeing the diverging diamond being used for these intersections, allowing uninterrupted passage from one side of the interstate to the other.

in my city, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA, the frontage roads are all one ways with ramps going off on the main roads. If you want to see how you can look on google maps, the frontage road runs along I-25 from Lomas all the way to Tramway. Theres usually shops and offices along the frontage road.

Hooray for #TeaVille! A thought on the frontage roads... maybe they would work better being one way? It would almost turn the whole system into a giant oval-about. This might work better in my head.
I hope you and your family are staying safe and well indoors. Reminds me of an old Mitchell and Webb bit. XD

hey biffa, I appreciate the advice you gave, simple, just make good choices lol. It seems like you have a good plan too, to take care of yourself and your children. I had an idea to share. I'm not sure if you still play minecraft much, but depending how old your kids are and if they enjoy playing games with you, it would be cool to see a family survival series. The first minecraft lets-player I used to watch years ago had a series like that and it was really fun to watch. Obviously this idea is to take the opportunity to do something fun when the kids might otherwise get bored being stuck at home far more than normal. They aren't going to study all day, so why not put this idea out there :)

    • @joshuatguerra
      @joshuatguerra 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I know this idea might seem random, especially its a minecraft idea on a city skylines vid. I don't actually play this game, although i think its on my wishlist to try it out. I came to your channel from hermitcraft season 4. I randomly watched a couple of your city skylines vids because they came up in my feed, and I find the fix my city vids interesting. They are chill videos to play in the background while im gaming. I was surprised i actually caught a recent video so I thought I would throw in a comment :) but I have been stuck at home for this week and I have been playing a lot of MC, so its on the brain :)

They use frontage roads in Texas extensively. The roads tend to be one-way in the same direction as the highway. In Kansas City we don't use them much but we'll have a road that follows closely to the highway and connects at each interchange, which I don't think works very well. You end up with four intersections all close to one another or you have the road swing widely away as it approaches the cross street.

I had a good chuckle from the drop in traffic in your own city...see, usually one of the biggest primary negatives to roundabouts are....queue lengths! :) so yeah those 20km backups is ironically a real representation of what most roundabouts tend to do during heavy traffic periods. you could always try ye good ol' "Michigan Left" whereas there are no left turns AT a 4-way intersection; instead there's a U-turn lane on the larger road about 50-100m from the intersection. would require doing a LOT of dual one-way roads instead of simply one larger road though. could be a fun experiment at larger interchanges i guess.

I use them often in down town areas they provide a non 4 or 3 way stop to moderate heavy traffic flow into something manageable when moving from primary roads to secondary roads.
I finally figured out what Cities Skylines traffic reminds me of, Thailand, they drive just like the cities cims here in Bangkok.
Thanks for the care my friend, I live in a country part of Thailand and the virus is completely irrelevant here, I don't socialize much or travel, all the food is fresh at the market daily. So I am safe and sound.

Hey Biffa, one thing you can do to solve the problem with your traffic around ferry pier is to optimize your bus lines (and other local transports). I found it super helpful if the bus line is close to ferry pier. Maybe you can move one of the bus stop closer to ferry pier, or just build a new shuttle line for ferry pier
