Fun Fact: This was the edited version.... In the ORIGINAL cut (which was only released in theaters), a great white shark came along at 2:20 unexpectedly and ripped them to pieces after they got away..... Madison fended it off for a little while after Allen's arms and legs were bitten off and he bled out, but ultimately she got eaten trying to save an already mutilated man. This was the directors way of recreating Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliette.... The original cut was never released on VHS because it was later deemed too violent for a PG rating, so we ended up with this unrealistic ending to the film.

That was beautiful and amazing. The way Madison uses her Mermaid-tail to fight back against the divers, removes their goggles and regulator.

It makes sense that she would be able to use her Mermaid-tail as a weapon. There are real creatures in the animal kingdom that can use their tails as weapons so a Mermaid might as well be able to do it,too!

This scene always gets me. It poses the question, would you give it all up for love? That you couldn't bear to be parted from the one you love so much that you would give up your "life" and your world, for theirs? That's real love. The sacrifice Allen makes by jumping off the pier and leaving his world, life and brother behind, to be with Madison in her world, from which he cannot return...

I gotta be honest though, i think he shouldntve jumped. She wasnt going to stay w him in his world and had really just come for a visit. He shouldve stayed on land.

She was just visiting at first, but then when she returned to him after their argument, she agreed to marry him and tell him who she really was. This meant she was going to stay with him permanently had Kornbluth not ruined that chance. She also states this just before this scene, saying she was ready to stay with him forever.

Wasn't he only safe underwater when she was around? He was safe with her underwater where she saved him from drowning after he got hit in the head by a boat, but that was no longer the case later on. So, with him jumping in the water to be with her there, wouldn't he always be at her mercy, where if she would swim off, he would die?

It begs the question. Does he need to be near her all the time for him to survive in the water? What if he gets mad again and then she gets way from him again like at that ice skating rink? It seems like he's completely at her mercy at sea.

    • @JR-ju3kj
      @JR-ju3kj 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

It doesn't really answer that question that well does it? Since it's already a fantasy movie with a mermaid in it maybe what the movie-
makers should have done is have some kind of magical artifact that Madison could give him to allow him to breath underwater. That would make more sense in the context of a movie like this and that way if she were to get away from him or for whatever reason be separated from him while they're underwater, he doesn't have to worry about drowning.
That's actually an idea I got from a comic book writer for a comic that I want to write that will have mermaids in it and for surface-dwellers who can't breath underwater, there's a magical amulet that they can wear that allows them to indefinitely survive and breath underwater.

Ironically, part of the reason that “The Little Mermaid” almost didn’t get made was that then-Disney CEO Michael Eisner & then-Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg were both concerned that it was too similar to “Splash”.
Eisner even said so himself in his memoir “Work In Progress: Risking Failure, Surviving Success”:
*”I had always loved the idea of setting an animated movie underwater, but both Jeffrey and I were concerned that this idea sounded too much like the live-action ‘Splash’, which Disney had released early in 1984, six months before we arrived.”*
And well, they weren’t exactly wrong about that: th-cam.com/video/5K5_sGzckvc/w-d-xo.html
(In fact, I’d be lying too if I said that *I* didn’t notice the similarities the first time I saw “Splash” at the age of 12! 😂)

Did we watch the same movie?
You do know the movie ends with the GUY Allen give up everything (his family, his friends, his home, his career, his species) to be with Madison under the sea, right?
Pretty rare for a romantic comedy where it usually defaults to the *female* protagonist giving up everything for the guy!
Basically what Allen did is pretty much what the little mermaid did in the original Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, where the little mermaid gave up her family, her friends, her home, and her species to be with the Prince on land, knowing she can’t ever go back to the sea and knowing that there’s no guarantee that she will be happy on land in the long term.
