      @@davoid96 He's wrong anyways. Blast processing was an increased color mode that the Motorola 68000 was capable of by using an exploit of refresh rates.

    • @tatsujincorp
      @tatsujincorp 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So that’s why the MD/Genesis had such a poor color palette.

    • @ryzmaker11
      @ryzmaker11 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tatsujincorp the mega drive has the same master palette as the pc engine (512 colors/9-bit RGB) and by default can display twice as many color as the amiga (64 colors). nothing "poor" here
      and it can increase the amount of colors via its shadow/highlight feature or via different tricks, one of which being what katsujinken10 described and is, IIRC, what was used for toy story's cutscenes in order to display 150 colors
      but blast processing is actually something else and refers to the mega drive complex CPU, the M68000, coupled with the system powerful DMA unit. this allows games on a league of their own compared to competiting systems with a good example being sonic 2 which has similar complex physics as sonic 1 except faster, with crazier level design and an impressive 2 player split screen mode that uses the system's interlaced resolution (320×448 pixels)

    My first exposure to this game was the video for "Hard to Explain" by The Strokes, I'm still kinda blown away by the scaling on display here for 1981, then again Sega and Namco were always at each other's throats when it came to pushing boundaries in Arcades

    Turbo was the game of my HS years. But, no you didn't get to drive through the other cars, and it was the worst when they switched the tracks and crashed you into another car as a result. But this game was huge fun, I miss those days in the late 70's and early 80's, a great time to be growing up. Jupiter and Beyond Arcade, that was the place to be in those days.

    I still can’t get over how amazing this game looks, especially for 1981. I mean, the graphics are on par with Nintendo’s F-Zero, and the was a decade later! And in terms of realism, well... it’s the best in its class for the time period! Pole Position has nothing on Turbo!

    • @johneygd
      @johneygd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree with that,while it is true true that f-zero used mode 7 but i was all just flat and boring with no obstacle in the way or something like that,in fact i find all that hype about mode 7 on snes really exaggerating back then,i can hardly believe that mode 7 became a detriment in the console wars of being the most powerful system,also nintendo was just cheating by sneakingly implement chip enhancements in their games to make you believe that the snes was sooo more better and upgradible as opposed to the genesis,wich is nonsense,
      Yes i say this as a snes fan.

    What brought me here again was seeing this game in the montage of video games that shows up in Godfrey Reggio's "Koyaanisqatsi" (1983). It's supposed to convey a growing sense of dread at a world consumed by digital violence as entertainment, but watching it now, I just felt nostalgic. "Hey, Defender! Stargate! Robotron: 2084! He got all the good ones! And that awesome Sega racing game, I forgot what it was called."

    This was one of my favorite arcade video games back in the day. I was pretty good at it too; I usually qualified for the bonus stage (needed to pass 30 or more cars in the timed part of the race to reach the bonus stage) and often was able to post a top 10 score. People who posted a top 10 score could post their initials/a 3 letter code on the leaderboard.
    The most amusing things about the game in retrospect were 1) the ambulance that came up behind you in the middle of the race that was indestructible; you needed to dodge cars coming up in front of you AND avoid the ambulance coming up behind you at the same time, and 2) the ice road areas where you could either go slower but have control in low gear or slide around the road but go much faster in high gear. It's amusing to think about ambulances going faster than race cars and icy areas on an Indy Car/Formula One race track, LOL.
    I still wish this game was released for the Atari 2600 or perhaps as a retro game on the NES or Sega Genesis. It was released as a feature game on the Colecovision, but I never had that console.

    How did you manage to get sound effects in the game? I have MAME 0.188 and there isn't a single sound played in the game.

      You need sample files for this to get the sound to work. Download it from here and put them into the samples folder. www.progettosnaps.net/samples/

    Wow, impressive for its age. Collision detections seems rather forgiving, but that might be OK, as in Outrun it is way too sensitive.

    God VCO Object scaling is so goofy looking. Thank god they redid the hardware for hang-on

    A bit of a take: Never liked the sounds of Sega’s late 70s-early 80s output. They just sound really harsh and just unpleasant.
