As a fireman from Portugal, let me clarify what the vehicles actually do and who they operated by for the comments.
The yellow ambulance, is operated by I.N.E.M, Instituto nacional de emergência, there are a few types of these such as SIV, but these are crewed usually by 2-3 people, and may or may not contain doctors or nurses. These answer ambulance calls ranging from not that urgent to very urgent.
The small yellow car is called a VMER, it's basically just a car with doctors from the local hospitals, and they operate under INEM as well, the car serves for life threatening situations, where a doctor is required, usually the doctor will board either the fireman ambulance or the INEM one, whichever is on scene, and the car will be driven by the nurse following the ambulance.
Then finally the red ones are the ambulances from the firemen, the crew in those has the same training as the normal INEM ambulances, even sometimes we operate with INEM ambulances due to protocol with them(we have one, it's red on the back and then yellow like the other ones, this is done to distinguish them) but to my knowledge we do not operate SIV ambulances.
Also unlike what some comments say or is the general perception of the public, Firemen and a standard INEM crew do not differ in training for the medical part, at least not for most of the country, as it's all done through INEM anyway and most firemen have the TAS course which is the equivalent to their TEPH course.
I'm also Portuguese and my dad is also a firefighter, are u his coolegee?
@Eternal Productions There is a lot of firemen in Portugal so it's not very likely he is from my fire department, I am from Areosa Rio Tinto, and I'm in the E.I.P team. But it's possible I've come across him in a fire.

"Bombeiros" means "Firemen"
Here in Portugal we have firemen paramedic units and their ambulances are painted in red and white (like the regular firemen vehicles) and sometimes white and blue. The yellow and blue ambulances belong to INEM (National Institute of Medical Emergencies)
The smaller velhice that arrived behind the Yellow unit, is the one where the doctor and the nurse go. As a mather of fact this unit is smaller and is the first to depart to get first to the emergency!! It's not easy to drive in lisbon and they are true heroes and very good drivers. They stabilize the victim that is then transfered to the bigger unit to BE droven in security to the hospital 😊😊
As a portuguese, i can definitely say you are the best american person that i ever saw pronoucing "bombeiros" and "ambulância". Great video 👌
yeap, I was about to say that.
One of my favourite country. Really beautiful and I love Portimao race track! Cheers from Czech Republic!
What have you watched on the Portimão circuit my friend?
@@fall3n4ngel24 I drove different cars there several times
The Yellow Ambulância is a mini-hospital, carrying all sort of top-notch equipement and medical staff.
They are the cream of the top, responding to major emergencies nationwide..
The red ones are opperated by different Fire Departments.
It is important to stress that emergency vehicles, namely Ambulances (Ambulâncias) are totally free.
The huge Square by the the river and all adjacent streets were built after the massive 1755 Earthquake and Tsunami that leveled most of Lisbon - - at the time the richest city in Europe.
The City was rebuilt according to a geometrical blueprint, all streets and Avenues strait as arrows and converging to huge squares.
This model became the yardstick for several cities in Europe and all over the world.

Hello. I am portuguese.
I'll try to clarify some things in the video.
- 112 = emergency number for all EU (European Union)
- yellow and blue ambulances = INEM ( I = Institute; N = National; E = Emergency; M = Medical ). Smaller cars: Medical transport and support material.
- red and white ambulances: Fireman.
The whole system is state-owned. It has virtually no fees. ( money well spent from our taxes ). There are no private companies for this system.
Hope this helps
Not anymore. Some "ambulances" are from private company
"well spent"

1:33 - The water you see here is the Tagus River estuary, not very far from its mouth. The open area is called Commerce Square. Before the 1755 earthquake it was the place where spices, tea, slaves and all sorts of products coming from far away places were traded. After the reconstruction of the city it was modernised and all those yellow buildings surrounding it housed some of the government's ministeries. Nowadays they have trendy, touristy shops.
2:05 - This ambulance belongs to the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM in Portuguese), a branch of the Health Ministry dedicated to emergency transportation of sick or injured people. They're usually the first responders in emergency scenarios.
2:28 - The red ambulances belong to the Fire Departments, in this case the Ajuda FD (Ajuda is one of Lisbon's neighbourhoods).
6:13 -That's a Yamaha XJ 900. 🙂
6:48 - The INEM station wagon following the ambulance is called Resuscitation and Emercency Medical Vehicle (VMER in Portuguese) and its purpose is to quickly carry a medical team to the location where the patient is, for 1st aid, CPR or to stabilise the patient before the ambulance arrives.
7:10 - That's a tow truck from the Municipal Police, not the normal tow truck used for vehicle recovery (which are flat bed trucks here in Portugal). 😉
There's another channel called rescue911.eu that has compilations of videos with lots of different emergency vehicles filmed in the Porto area. They're around 5 mins long, so no need to skip around. 🙂
Stellar information here, Thank You so much!
In residential areas, during the night, sirens cannot be used only in exceptional cases or to draw the attention of cars ahead.
@@IWrocker He is a nurse... so he knows what he is talking about :)

@@SupremeLordEnki - Oh yeah? Have you looked at pictures of the XJ900 and compared them with the one in the video? If not, go do that and then get back to me.
Besides, I'm portuguese, I know what bikes our police force uses.
Portugal! Very proud portuguese, here! Very nice to see this.
6:00 the police officer bike is a Yamaha, it's very used (among with BMWs) on Police forces around here
6:51 the emergency car is the medic vehicle. They can also use an emergency bike in heavy traffic areas
... and Honda Deauville's...
In Portugal the INEM ambulance is mostly covered by Paramedics and the INEM cars are faster intervention vehicles with Specialist Trauma Doctors, these cars join ambulances every time the paramedic requests his help. The drivers are absolute kamikazes and these are usually very fast cars (in some urban areas we have INEM motorcycles). These Trauma Docs are also a bit of adrenaline junkies 😂, but they cover and support their units amazingly and with their knowledge and advanced equipment usually make a significant difference in complex emergency scenarios.
My father is an Inem driver, can confirm hes an adrenaline junkie😊
5:30 old school cool coach buses from the US always take the cake. I mean, we have some pretty ones here in Europe, but the art deco phase in US... chapeau. Really pretty.
Yellow Ambulances (INEM) are part of a National Rapid Assistance Units.
Kind of a mini hospital on wheels.
Often they are accompanied by Yellow Sport Wagons, made by Audi or VW, ., carrying Doctors when the clinical situations require serious medical skills prior to moving patients to hospitals.
The Sport Wagons also carry more specialised medical equipment.
INEM Drivers could be fantastic Rally Pilots -- quite impressive, the way they move.
Ambulances ( Ambulancias), namely, INEM Vehivles provide a Totally Free, top-notch Medical Service.
Sometimes a timid Driver, going home or to work, becomes frozen, unable to react quickly to a "Space Ship" behind him, blasting the Sirene and flashing an array of Blue Lights.
More proficient drivers usually cooperate, providing spaces for the Timid MR. MAGOO get out of the way., allowing the Emergency Vehicles to zoom by.
I allways wonder " someone had an AVC? A car accident? A lady giving birth?
Watch more if you don't mind, this shows very little of the amazing emergency vehicles in Portugal
I have been to Lisbon. It is a beautiful city with great food.
Hi to you and the portugueses 🇵🇹 viewers from France 🇫🇷 ! 😜
U did well with your pronunciation mate!!!Cheers from down under.
1:45 That neighbourhood in Lisbon is called "Baixa Pombalina"; "Baixa" because it's downtown, "Pombalina" because it was built during the government of Marquis of Pombal, after the 1755 Earthquake completely destroyed the capital (earthquake + citywide fire + tsunami... all in a row).

The red vans are normally the old ones that we have, but normally we don't have them anymore... or there are only a few ones. I believe that the police bike is a Honda, old as well, the lower van was not a police car but a emergency van to be faster and starts helping in the emergency until the normally big van arrives! And the truck was indeed a iveco van... Great job 👏 👍
This is so funny. I follow your videos and now here you are talking, from across the ocean, from my city. A wth? moment of my day 🤣
Oh btw!, on 6:50 you see an INEM ambulance with a Volkswagen Passat station wagon behind. That means that the person who is being transported on the ambulance is in a life threatening situation. The INEM has station wagons with everything needed for life support when the situation is or may be dire. They are geared with a plethora of medicines, restraining items, extra defilibrators (in case the one on the ambulance fails for some reason), and so on.
Hi there, so I'm Portuguese, From Lisbon, The yellow Ambulance, is an Emergency ambulance, dispatched only when there's something really bad (it has people with special training), The red one is dispatched for all other types of situation (less serious) and is operated by normal "firefighters" the yellow support car that you see behind the yellow ambulance is a fast Emergency veicule (normally VW Passat) with specially trained medical personal (trauma and hearth), and is dispatched only in real serious situations.
Regarding the tow truck, keep in mind that most of the streets in great cites in Europe have quite narrow roads, so you have to account for that that's why you have small tow trucks.
The one on the video is a Lisbon municipal police one, used to collect car's that park in payed places and "run out of time" just 15/30 minutes after is enough to be towed or blocked and then towed.
Nice videos that you make, thanks for that.

Your pronunciation of “ambulância” was really good! Wow almost like a native speaker 👏🏻
We also use some American Ambulances and Fire Trucks to!
The place is called Terreiro do Paço!Usually on the summer there are a lot of different events there, like watching football, concerts, video mapping shows... the most beautifull part of that place isnt shown in the video unfortunatelly!
The cop bike is an Yamaha xj 900,now they also use the Yamaha FJR1300A
If you want I can make some videos from some stuff here in Portugal to send to you!
INEM,(the yellow and blue)there was a van and a car, those are the fast emergency vehicles! The guy that drives the car,is the same guy that drives the Safe car in the racetrack!
That smaller yellow car (VMER), has equipement and personel inside that can cope with a small emergency hospital... They travel like crazy, arriving to the patient quickly, with trained personel and advanced equipment and that person can be treated right in the spot. When the ambulance arrives, with more trained personel, the doctor from the VMER joins the crew on the ambulance for continuous support till the point the patient reaches to the hospital. As Portuguese people we are, we like to complain for what we have. But despite the system behind it not being perfect, is just amazing the level for this crews, as well as much of the personel from Bombeiros (firemen). And all without looking if you are rich or poor, if you have insurance or not. All this is supported by tax payers, but when you need it, it comes to you without looking inside your pockets
Yeah that style of tow truck, the euro version and the F150 haven't been used in Australia for over 20 years. We use small cabover trucks with tilt trays.
The red or white ambulances are operated for firefigthers and have 2 firefiters with a special course. They are used for less serious emergencies.
The yellow ones are operated by INEM, and there are several types of ambulances. Depending on the type it can have more specialized paramedic, doctor, or nurses. INEM also have motorbikes and heli.
Hello, the yellow ambulances are the first responder department, the red ones belong to the fire department, the police bike is a Yamaha but before then, and with same color scheme, there were BMW, now a days they have BMW 1100cc, Honda Pan European 1300cc, Yamaha FJR 1300, among others for other specific uses. The second Yellow ambulance is followed by a VMER (Rapid Medic Emergency Vehicule). Correct Iveco Tow truck for use to a limit of 3.5Ton. If this helps feel free to ask for more.
The small car with strobes is a VMER ( Emergency Medical Vehicle and Resuscitation ). The driver is a a nurse trained in emergency defensive driving and a doctor.
It's perfectly normal that you don't see streets or cities similar to Lisbon, or even the rest of Europe, in the US... for some reason the European continent is called "the old continent". Most European countries, as well as cities, have many centuries of history, unlike the USA, which is a relatively recent country.
The buildings that you saw on the first street, which caught your attention, would probably have all been there when the USA was being colonized.
You know the lisbon earthquake and the us declaration of independence are only 20 years apart right? Downtown lisbon is not that old.
@@angrymongoose7370 and you know that when the declaration of independence was proclaimed in 1776, the US was made up of 13 colonies on the east coast, right? Colonization of territory to the west took place over the following decades. What I said is correct, even taking into account the 1755 earthquake in Lisbon... many of the buildings in the video already existed when the US was still being colonized.
Yes, that region of the city was completely rebuilt a few years after the US independence
@@zeazevedo yea, just not the ones in those first few clips, near that open area
@@angrymongoose7370 the earthquake was at sea, which caused a tsunami.
However, on opposite of USA, at the time, most buildings were made out of actual stone, dumb bricks, etc, which are materials capable of withstanding better a cataclysm than premade buildings or glass buildings such the ones that exist in USA.
The building he saw on the vid, not only has been there for centuries, it survived the earthquake with very minor damage.
In most of Europe, you will find millions of structures as such.
Also, to foreigners, Portugal History tends to be a bit confusing on its length because the country changed name 3x throughout it's history, so TK actually get to know the whole history of the country, you must use the names Portugal, Portugalia and Lusitania.
Salutations.
You just got yourself another subscriber. 🙏❤

Being a country with not that many monetary capacity and politicians fluent in corruption, at least the public servants try to do their best.
Thank you 🙏🙏
I'm Portuguese and I will say 1 thing you did a great job at saying "bombeiros ambulância" it wasn't perfect but it was a great try, thanks for trying to say the things the way they are
Your pronunciation is quite correct. The only thing I can point out is the Bombeiros which you pronounced like the Spanish version. Here in Portugal the ei has the the same sound as your ay ... Another thing I wanted to point out is that the yellow call behind the ambulance is called a VMER (Medical Vehicle for Emergency and Resuscitation, roughly translated), while a normal ambulance is manned by firefighters with roughly the same training as your EMTs the VMER is manned by a Medical doctor and a Nurse that can give a critical victim more advanced care.
One type of ambulance that is not shown in the video is the yellow with the rear painted red, those ones are sponsored by the INEM (National Institute for Medical Emergency) but are manned by firefighters in the respective fire stations they are given to
INEM (the yellow) is the quick / urgent health services, with doctor (first response) on board. the red one is Fire Department ambulance services, normally for accidents or health services.
It's a police tow truck ( IVECO), because it has blue lights, only the police can have blue lights on tow trucks.Private tow trucks have orange lights.
I was watching this video and just realized that I was standing in the exact same place as the person who filmed the police motorcycle was while watching it 😂
First Ambulance is a VW. That was filmed in "Praça do Comercio" near the Tagus River. The Police Bike is a Yamaha. The "roof top" shot was of an Ambulance and a Car that usually goes with a couple of paramedics. If something is more life threatening, they send first the medics on the car and the Ambulance follows, sometimes and in busy places of the city they send a Doctor on a Motorcycle just to clear better the traffic, and then the Ambulance. And yes here we have a lot of tow trucks with Van Cabs.
Im Portugal you also have two types of Police. The PSP (Public Safety Police) which is a civilian Police, and the GNR (National Republican Guard) which is a paramilitary Police. The PSP covers the major cities and the GNR covers the outskirs and the rest of the country, like small towns and rural areas. Each police force covers more and less 50% of the poppulation each. Oh and the GNR has military training as part of its recruitment.
And yes, it's an Iveco tow truck of the municipality police, basically to tow badly parked or blocked vehicles.
Red ambulances in europe are always a fire rescue paramedic. Regular emergency ambulances are usually white or yellow.
3:08 As a Portuguese I understand perfectly what you said, I have seen American people living in Portugal for years that would not say it so well. It was already explained in the comments below the difference between the emergency vehicles of the fire department and the National Institute of Emergency (INEM), but the biggest difference from European countries like Portugal with countries like the United States is in the laws and respect for emergency vehicles, Here in Portugal as soon as we hear the siren of an emergency vehicle most drivers pull over to the side of the road to give way (unless it is some idiot like that in the video) something that in many other countries like the U.S. does not happen or at least I never saw it happen. By the way, just for the lols there is an Audi R8 in our fleet of national emergency vehicles.

the INEM ambulance drivers (we have those ambulances, but also cars/station wagons and bikes - for the most urgent cases) have special training with the Police Department.
First of all, congratulations for the videos and the way you present them. I would like to point out to you, as a car enthusiast, the story of Tazio Nuvolari. Friend of Enzo Ferrari, defined by Porsche as the greatest of all time, he was famous for his courage, control and the madness he put into driving. He won at night with the headlights off, with a wrench instead of the steering wheel, without a seat, even without the accelerator. The winner of the most beautiful race of all time, the 1935 German GP, ahead of everyone after an impossible comeback on opponents with engines much more powerful than his. Able to control cars like those with a controlled skid on the 320 km/h wire for 200 meters. Capable in a stage race, the Mille Miglia, to dig a 20-minute gap between him and the second in a very short time, now old and sick, with a driving style called "fury and class". Not a legend, but THE legend.
I attach the link to a documentary in English about his career.

Interesting fact... all ambulances here are privately owned and operated, not a part of a hospital or city utility. =) And you said the ambulance fine, the one you said was actually owned by the fire department.
Edited: Lisbon is actually on the river right at the mouth of the ocean. So what you are seeing @1:38 is Terreiro do Paço (Terrace Plaza) and it looks out to the river. BTW, this is the spot that the earthquake destroyed back in 1755.

6:45 the first car is the ambulance and the second car is the medic and nurse car, you were correct, it's a support car and if that car is called together with the ambulance, it's not good, probably very bad health state or just to declare a death, i know this because i work in an hospital

gutted you didn’t get to see the Mitsubishi Lancer 10 used by the Portuguese police in the island of Madeira. It’s unique
The last tow truck is a iveco daily, they do anything with them, tow trucks, flatbeds, delivery truck (i drive one like the one in the video)
The red ambulance is from the Firemen and when you said ambulância you were close to how we say it.. You were spot on when it comes to Portuguese and Spanish, even dough it looks similar they are not the same.
Badges on european busses don't always show who made it. Bus shown here was made by company called Noge, but Volvo provided chassis and engine for it. I know you like Scanias and they also provide chassis and engines for companies that make busses

The way you pronounced it was very similar to an accent mostly spoken in São Paulo

I loved this video man! Really cool and interesting, keep em coming!
Red ones are ambulance from firemen and Yellow ones are medical emergency (Faster response -INEM) we still have the modified faster cars from INEM like Passats and Ford Focus ST
The motorcycle is a Yamaha XJ 900. Portuguese police use mainly yamahas and BMWs.
As for Portuguese police bikes the GNR (National Republican Guard) is the highway patrol police, but also the rural police. For highway patrol they use Yamaha FZ 800 and Yamaha FJ 1300. For country work they use BMW 850, BMW 310 and the scooters Yamaha NMAX 125. The same kinds of bikes are used by the urban police (PSP). Being old, I remember when they used Harleys and later BMWs.
For emergency vehicles, there are two kinds of services: the firefighters (Bombeiros) and the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM). The preferred configuration is the fast transport of patients to a hospital. Ambulances have a nurse aboard and the driver is also a nurse, and some survival equipment. But if the patient is at immediate risk, a car or a specialized ambulance with lots or emergency equipment and emergency doctors from INEM is called to stabilize the patient in place. There are also some private ambulance services, but they are rare. Ambulances are usually what you call Eurovans (Mercedes Sprinter, Ford Transit, Renault Master, Iveco Daily, in the long and high ceiling configuration). Emergency cars from INEM are VW Passat. Firefighter ambulances are red or white, those from INEM are yellow. All use blue emergency lights. The transport of patients is usually free or at a symbolic price. Those who made the transport recover it's price from the National Health Service. Firefighters also transport non-emergency patients (old people, handicapped, incapacitated) to medical appointments or treatments in normal vans or mini-buses.
About tow trucks: there are some tow trucks like the one you've shown, made from Eurovans, but most are built from small truck chassis like the Mitsubishi Canter and Fuso.
in Portugal we have a surplus of Ford Transits, I bet there's more here on the roads than in all of the US 😂😂
The bike is a 90's yamaha, an xj600 with a fairing, or a fazer... really rare find nowadays, generaly they use new fancy bmw''s...
Bombeiros- Fireman or firecorporation
The Yellow ambulância/ambulance.are more prepared Fireman for first aid. A kind of paramédics.
The small Yellow car is driven by a nurse and takes an emergency medic with him.
That tow truck is an Iveco (they also have Mitsubishi Canter) and its from Municipal Police.
The motorcycle is an old Diversion if I am not wronk. Now they use FJ1300 and some "SWAT" guys that go in pairs on the BMW GS 1200 and 1250
Police are using Skodas and Renault (Captur)
The yellow are first responders with doctor and nurse.. The Motorbikes, mostly Yamaha ..If you speak spanish, we understand..
The tow truck looks like a 5-ton Iveco Daily, ideal for urban work, easily tow a big SUV
The police motorcycle is a Honda. An older one. But there are also BMW's. Both of them more recent.
At the start of the video was the commerce square in Lisbon. The red ambulance belong to the firefight departments (your pronuociation was pretty good). The yellow ambulance belong to INEM (equivalent to 911 emergency service). Police bike was an yamaha

Those buildings that struck you for their difference are part of a downtown reconstruction after the 1755 Lisbon earthquake that leveled a large potion of the then old and medieval city.
When you see that yellow emergency car, someone is literally dying.

Great video.🇵🇹
The cop´s bike is an old Yamaha XJ900. They´re moving onto new ones now.
6:54 that car was an Advanced Life Support car. As most of our ambos are BLS.
Im from portugal and theres a problem that some people dont respect to much and dont move in emergency when they have someone in the back of them in emergency
Look for the Emergency Vehicels in Norway, heavy machinery used in icy condicions...
It's simple, yellow to emergency with life risk, yellow with a car like VW Passat that comes with a medic to assist in cardiac arrest or something that need assistance before transport, and red ambulance is on fire department to assist in low priority cases or something like car crashes.
That's actually a nice service for a country you pay nothing for assistance 👌😉
the yellow ambulance are for emergencys... everything that is consideret urgent, its the yellow ambulances, that sometimes is accompanied by a vw passat, that transports a nurse and a doctor... if it is a very serious accident normaly it goes the ambulance anda the passat.... the red ambulance its for not serious situations, but it steel need an ambulance to transport to the hospital... and the exixts the white ones, that its just to transfer a patient to another hospital... that police motorcicle is actually old... they normally use kawasaki, or bmw... depending of they are needed for... the yellow ambulances are normally VW or Mercedes, because its the central goverment that byes them.... yhe red ones, they are any brand, because its the local fire departamnt that byes them... so as the withe ones... in any case, always european brands...
Pretty good pronunciation on the "Bombeiros" and "Ambulância". Would not pass as native but close enough to be understood.
The yellow one has more experience doctors that go for the pacients, and the red ambulance, olso have very good doctors but is for the hardest jobs, such as people stuck in cars, after the accidents, more-or-less in that way

Italian is close, but I'm Portuguese and I can fully understand Spanish without ever officially learning it, italian not so much haha
Greetings from Porto ✌️
Portuguese, Spanish, Italian and even Romanian are languages that all derive from Latin. The language that most closely resembles Portuguese is Spanish. A Portuguese and a Spaniard can speak with their own languages and understand each other well. Italian resembles a little bit with portuguese, but have a lot off diferent words that makes them more dificult to understand. Latin is an ancient language (not used by any country for a long time) and the Italian language resembles a little bit with it... I mean, not much the words but the accent. For a Portuguese, Romanian is very different, so diferent that portuguese don't understand them. Romanian it's more like russian, ukrainian or something like that... But romainian it's a latin derived language and there are some resembled words. It's probably like english vs german, you don't understand what they say, but there are some words you understand
@@blindness As a Portuguese, I don´t understand a conversation in Romeniam, however, I found that are several words in Romanian that are equal to the Portuguese (same meaning and phonetic). But yes, the Spanish his overall the language more similar to the Portuguese.
Not true. A portuguese can understand almost everything in Spanish but almost nothing in Italian, besides some words or expressions.
If you speak portuguese with a spanish accent you'll get the language right by 90%. Small changes in expressions like in portuguses we say "look" in spanish they say "aim". we say "goal keeper" they say "gate keeper", we say "trade" they say "exchange". We understand both these words but we use ones they use the others. The thing is, we understand them better than they understand us.
I'm Portuguese and i love your channel.
One day i will go to USA
I'm portuguese from Lisbon. That's right, our law enforcement, fire trucks and 1st responding medical vehicles are quite diferent from others like your own.
Try our firetrucks like Unimog version of it, it can literally climb a wall 😂
