OBITUARY
Shirley Mae Burton (Johnson) departed this life on May 28, 2024 at Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria, VA. Shirley was born on May 10, 1931 in Louisa, Virginia to the late Thomas E and Daisy M Johnson. She came to know Christ at an early age and was baptized again when she joined First Mount Zion Baptist Church in Dumfries, VA on July 28, 2002. She loved participating in Sunday School and the Senior’s Ministry.
She was a retired factory worker from Comdial Corporation in Charlottesville, VA, re-entering the workforce as a cashier. She retired from Walmart in 2006 - a job she often credited with helping to keep her young. She was proud to live to see President Barack Obama elected as the first Black President. She was also proud that she volunteered to serve at the phone center during his re-election campaign in 2016. She enjoyed playing Pinochle and Bingo with her friends, was a wonderful cook, stylish and known for her youthful appearance, spirit and high-pitched laugh. She was also proud that she learned to be proficient on the computer when she was in her seventies.
She was preceded in death by her brothers Charlie, Willie, George, Jimmie and Lewis Johnson, a sister Thelma Jackson and a grandson, Preston Toombs, III. She was also preceded in death by her former husband, Earl A. Burton.
She leaves to cherish her memory four children, Margaret M. Burton of Capitol Heights, MD, Earl R. Burton of Woodbridge, VA, Harriett L. Burton of Las Vegas, NV and Daphne G. Burton of Bristow, VA; Four sisters, Mabel Smith of Richmond, VA, Dorothy Braxton of Upper Marlboro, MD, Kathleen Johnson (Kat) of Annapolis, MD and Clistine Johnson of Germantown, MD; two brothers, Thomas C Johnson (Ruth) of New Carrolton, MD and John M Johnson (Lisa) of Washington, DC.; 10 Grandchildren, Reginald Pierre, Bamidele “Kiki” Burton Alexander, Nsenga “Kilo” Burton, Tara M. Pierre, Jason C. Toombs, Jeffrey Michael-Brandon Godfrey, Eric Toombs, Daphne Kristin Weyrick (Jason), Ashley L. Burton-Mims and Bolade Kokumo Burton; 11 Great-Grandchildren, Chandra Pierre, Gisselle Singleton, David Alexander III, DeSean Rice, Sayuri Toombs, Kendall Burton Alexander, Carmen Mae Burton-Velez, Jaysean Toombs, Ameeriah Toombs, Laila R. Gillot, Malachi Jones and Kai Agee Burton and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was a great Mother, Grandmother and Great-grandmother.
We feel very blessed that we had this time to spend with her, care for her, know her and love her.
