I really hate when political leaders use the resources of the country for stupid or unnecessary things. Most of those buildings are empty and those communist statues are creepy. Rural Turkmenistan is poor and underdeveloped. He could've built a thriving country, he built a museum of marble architecture and statues.
It could have been used to dig wells for fresh water and irrigation, training in agriculture, simple tools, chickens, ducks, camels, sheep and donkeys, schools, medical care, etc., to raise the standard of living for the people.
For 8 thousand years we have had leaders and the world is going to end. For 200,000 we did not have leaders and the earth was a paradise. Please eliminate leaders .

I am from Turkmenistan and I highly reccomend visiting it if you get the chance. You will meet one of the most hospitable people on earth. Plus, Ashgabat is spotless clean and absolutely beautiful. My country is rich, just wish we had the right leader. Current president is a dictator and pockets all the money coming into our country. If the money was managed properly, every Turkmen would've lived in abundance. The change of name of months took place years ago and was immediately reverted back to original name. So that's a misleading info there. And everyone that goes to Turkmenistan loves to show the empty streets which are on the OUTSKIRTS of Ashgabat. If you go into center, it is quite lively. You'll see busy markets and families hanging out in parks in the evening.

I have been in Turkmenistan in summer 2019 and been in circus also, they are not banned they actually show also circus everyday in their TV. Former leader died in 2006. Also months are not anymore those, they changed them back. About pet dog law I don't know but new leader loves his dog so he built golden dog statue 2020.

I'm from Turkmenistan and Drew visited at the weirdest time with knowledge of outdated information. Its not like that at all, anymore. It only takes a single visit to see the reality. Honorable hospitability of turkmen people, language barrier - none, yes people aren't outside during the daytime because it's extremely hot out. Keep in mind the proverb: "Better to see it ONCE than hear it thousand times" - personal opinion will defy your own thoughts!
