No1: Vertigo, No2: Rebecca, No3: Shadow of a Doupt, No4: Northeast by Northwest, No5 Notorious, No6: Psycho, No7: Rear Window, No8: Spellbound, No9: Strangers on a train, No10: Dial M for murder. PS His 39 Steps, the Rope, To catch a thief,Foreign Corespondent and The Lady Vanishes, could also be in this top 10! Hard to choose when all are masterpieces!!
" To Catch A Theif " is Hitchcocks masterpiece In my opinion, the plot is tight, the cinematography is spectacular, the wardrobe, set designs, lighting, locations, and last but not least, the dialogue and sexual inuendo between Grant and Kelly, was with Hitchcocks blessing improvised frequently, but not overly so, make this truly a masterpiece in film making!
One of Hitchcock’s underrated films. “The Wrong Man.” With Henry Fonda and the underrated Vera Miles is riveting and heartbreaking. It was based on a true story about a man who is falsely accused of a series of armed robberies. Hitchcock didn’t cameo in the film. Appearing at the beginning. Letting audiences know that the story is stranger then anything he had done up until that point. Because it’s a true story. He would cast Vera Miles in Vertigo. But she became pregnant in which Hitchcock famously said to her. “Vera, don’t you know it’s in bad taste to have more than two.” Miles who was under contract to Hitchcock. Ended it on the set of Psycho. Mikes took no crap from him. Miles does sort of appear in Vertigo. She’s the portrait that Kim Novak is looking at in the museum
I agree with Psycho and Rear Window being at the top but recently saw The Birds again after many years and thought it was really scary. I think it had to do with thinking there must be some form of bird virus going on making it believable they became aggressive that really got to me. Thanks for the list as I plan to see how many more I can watch again on TH-cam some seeing now in color remembering my old black and white TV days.
My favorites are. No1: Vertigo, No2: Rebecca, No3: Shadow of a Doupt, No4: Northeast by Northwest, No5 Notorious, No6: Psycho, No7: Rear Window, No8: Spellbound, No9: Strangers on a train, No10: Dial M for murder. 39 Steps, the Rope, To catch a thief,Foreign Corespondent,The Lady Vanishes, could also be in this top 10! It's hard to pick the best, when it comes to Alfred Hitchcock, because he was on a different level all byhimself!! 2 of his masterpieces, are in my top 5 movies of alltime!!
I'm going with his Brit productions. The 39 Steps, The Lady Vanishes, The Man Who Knew Too Much (hated his later version),. Didn't care for his last few films but every thing else terrific.
Notorious should be in the top ten. I love your top ten---it is difficult to choose, but Notorious is his first great American film, and it doesn't get enough attention. Like you I love North by Northwest--it's my personal favorite (though not Hitchcock's best), but there would be no North by Northwest without Notorious, and frankly, it's a much better film: better plot, better acting, better suspense. As great as Psycho is, no way it's number one over Vertigo.
My personal top 5: 1) Dial M for Murder, 2) Rebecca, 3) Spellbound, 4) The Lady Vanishes, 5) Rear Window If pressed to name honorable mentions I'd probably go Rope and then the 2nd version of The Man Who Knew Too Much.
I don't know how anyone can rank them. Still, I'm partial to Dial M in 3D. And I am usually not a fan of 3D movies. I see them more of a gimmick than anything else. But Hitchcock uses it in such a way that turns a very good movie into a great one. If you ever get a chance to see this film in 3D, jump at the opportunity. You won't regret it.
My Top Ten: 10. Vertigo 9. Notorious 8. The Wrong Man 7. Torn Curtain 6. The Lady Vanishes 5. North By Northwest 4. Rear Window 3. Rope 2. Strangers On A Train 1. Psycho
Top 10:1:North by Northwest, 2:Shadow of a Doubt, 3:Foreign Corespondent, 4:The Lady Vanishes, 5:Saboteur, 6:Strangers on a Train, 7:Rear Window, 8:Dial M for Murder, 9:To Catch a Thief, 10:Psycho. I can't argue with The Birds. I've never seen Rebecca. I'll have to watch it.
Thanks for this list ! Too bad you didn’t mention « Sabotage » and mostly « Notorious » witch are by far superior to « The Birds » … Greetings from France 🇫🇷
Sabotage was shown in the intro and an easy top 10 film. As is The 39 Steps (less clunky than North by Northwest). The Birds is overrated but Dial M for Murder even more so. The Wrong Man is likely top 10 for me.
"Notorious" is the obvious oversight here as it's easily one of Hitchcock's 10 best. I would replace "Dial M for Murder" and "Rope" with "Notorious" and any one of several other excellent films.
Io avrei messo il caso paradine al posto di nodo alla gola e poi ci manca notorius con la Bergman che è un capolavoro e io confesso con Cliff perché non è mai stato. Considerato dalla critica e marine .❤❤❤
at no 4, I realised that one of Psycho, Rear Window, Vertigo and Notorious wouldn't make the cut. Talk about suspense! Which of those could be left out? Of course, I disagreed. But Psycho is top for me, too. I have to give Vertigo a re-watch. I just hated the premise so much I was never a big fan on a gut level even if I could see its technical beauty. It is the one great Hitch that is not among my top five, but I'm convinced by force of numbers to give it a re-watch
Why do so many young people choose Psycho as their #1? 1. Vertigo 2. Rear Window 3. North by Northwest 4. Strangers on a Train 5. The Birds 6. Psycho 7. Rope 8. Rebecca 9. The Man Who Knew too Much 10. Dial M for Murder 11. Notorious 12. To Catch a Thief Its a close call between Vertigo and Rear Window.
I havw seen ALL Hitchcock's films (some many times) with one exception - a musical he directed in his English years called "Waltzes from Vienna." I am sorry that you have neglected all his years in England. The original "The Man Who Knew Too Much" and "The 39 Steps" are surely outstanding - and so is "Young and Innocent". Of his American years, I'd choose as his very best "Strangers in a Train", "Vertigo" and "Notorious".
I bought "Waltzes from Vienna" out of pure curiosity but watched it only once ! i've got all of the other Hithc's movies but the most "used" is Vertigo !
SHAME FOR PUTTING PSYCHO IN FIRST ! WE ARE FED UP ! The real man who inspired after a book the Perkins' character was a real serial killer (I mean who really axisted as there are so many in the US !)
Notorious definitely deserves to be high on the list, deleting Dial M for Murder or The Birds, or Rebecca or Rope, to make room for it if you want to limit the list to only 10.
Birds is my least favorite Hitchcock movie.No1: Vertigo, No2: Rebecca, No3: Shadow of a Doupt, No4: Northeast by Northwest, No5 Notorious, No6: Psycho, No7: Rear Window, No8: Spellbound, No9: Strangers on a train, No10: Dial M for murder. 39 Steps, the Rope, To catch a thief,Foreign Corespondent,The Lady Vanishes, could also be in this top 10!

Yea psycho kinda get overrated above the others
I'd change a few things around but replace Dial M for Murder with Notorious. It's one of my top 3 Hitchcock films.

I have always enjoyed viewing Dial M.......

I think the most underrated Hitchcock movie is To Catch A Thief, A very entertaining & rewatchable movie, Likely Top5 for me.
One of my favorites is “Sabotage” from 1936. If I were to make a Hitchcock top 10, it would definitely appear somewhere on it.
Agreed. Sabotage and Blackmail MUST feature in a top 10 list like this.
A good list. I also like “Marnie” and continue to be entertained by “Frenzy”.
The Birds should be a lot higher than number 10, just for the scene where the Mitch's mother finds the body of the farmer.
"only my close personal friends can call me hitch" - hitch
I call him hitch sometimes

Check out THE LODGER, a silent film by Hitchcock about The Ripper.
loved The Lodger!
Fact: Every super HITCH fan will have a completely different list.
My list:1. Psycho 2. The man who knew too much(1956) 3. Vertigo 4. Shadow of a doubt 5. Rear Window
Vertigo, Notorious, Rear Window... My picks
Great picks, close to mine.I'd add Rebecca too, can't leave it out! Vertigo is my alltime favorite movie!!
Notorious should be in the top ten.

Psycho or Notorious
Rebecca#1
I’d include “The Man Who Knew Too Much”
Thanks for this list !

True! I agree.
Rear Window-No Doubt!
Sabotage, Notorious, Rear Window, Rope (Jimmy Stewart was miscast that should have been Clifton Webb). Shadow of a Doubt
Foreign Correspondent, my fave.
There’s variety n H filmography, n I luv it.............
i like this! Very good work!
While his British films are terrific I guess I'll have to go with Vertigo, NBNW, The Birds and Psycho.
How is Strangers on a Train "somewhat tacky"?
No. 1 I Confess. No. 2 The 39 Steps. No. 3 North By Northwest.
"Notorious" is the obvious oversight here as it's easily one of Hitchcock's 10 best. I would replace "Dial M for Murder" and "Rope" with "Notorious" and any one of several other excellent films.

To Catch a Thief

No, no and no (for me, it was disgusting !)
Okay, I get why you have Psycho as number 1--you're a horror guy.
Dial M for Murder is the weakest here. And Rope is the better adaptation of a British stage play. And Hitchcock was good before the 40s.
I agree, it was weak. Not impressed.
Notorious
Notorious definitely deserves to be high on the list, deleting Dial M for Murder or The Birds, or Rebecca or Rope, to make room for it if you want to limit the list to only 10.
The Birds is the best film ever

"Well casted"??? The past tense of cast is - cast.
PSYCHO #1? The most un-Hitchcock film of the entire CV. Where is FOREIGN CORRESPONDENT? Where is SABOTAGE? Or SABOTEUR? Sheesh.
I would also say Rebecca is very un-Hitchcock
@@steveblundell7766 He was almost "forced" to do it by th great "mogul" and as it was his 1st american movie........
Since Frenzy is not on this list I can not like it.
Birds shouldn't be on the list
